Police say Van der Sloot brutally murdered Flores three days after meeting her at a casino. He broke her nose, strangled her, threw her to the floor then emptied her wallet and drove away in her SUV, said Gen. Cesar Guardia, chief of the criminal police.

The 6-foot-3 (190-centimeter-tall) Van der Sloot took about $300 worth of Peruvian currency ($104.00 US), two credit cards and Flores' national ID card, Guardia said. He said the suspect abandoned her car in a lower-class Lima neighborhood before fleeing south to Chile by bus.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Peru's legal process
Under Peruvian law, prosecutors have 15 days to file charges and the judge has 15 days to accept or reject the charge. After that, the judge opens an investigation, then hands the case to the district attorney, who gives an opinion and hands it back.

The judge then gives a final report to a superior court judge, who reviews it and gives it to the superior court district attorney. That DA decides whether to file an "accusation" – a charge with a request for a penalty, and the oral trial begins.

By law, the investigation period leading up to trial is supposed to be four months (with a possible two-month extension) – but because of massive backlogs, the period is always longer.

There is no jury. A panel of three judges decide the verdict and sentence. Almost all big cases are appealed to the Supreme Court's five judges.

If convicted of premeditated aggravated murder, Joran van der Sloot could receive a sentence of up to 35 years in prison. Other options:

Simple murder — up to 20 years
Murder “as result of violent emotion" — from 3 to 5 years in prison
"Injury that leads to death" — 1 to 3 years in prison

Confessions help reduce a sentence, but likely not much for a case like this, according to Peruvian legal sources.

The prime suspect in Natalee Holloway's disappearance was pelted with tomatoes yesterday as Peruvian authorities formally charged him with murdering and robbing another young woman he befriended.

"Murderer!" and "disgrace!" a crowd screeched as cops paraded Joran van der Sloot, 22, past the crush and into a Lima courthouse.

A judge ordered the dastardly Dutchman jailed without bail, saying he killed Stephany Flores, 21, with "ferocity and great cruelty" after a night of poker.

Last night, van der Sloot asked to be placed in a cell by himself out of fear that other inmates would kill him.

Sources from Chilean police told Emol.com that at present there is not a formal arrest warrant issued against the Dutch citizen yet, but only a request from Peruvian police to locate him.

If Joran van der Sloot is convicted, he will have to serve his term in Peru, Professor Knoops says. There is no judicial treaty between Peru and the Netherlands which would allow the sentence to be served in a Dutch jail. An ad hoc transfer of the verdict to the Dutch legal system would be possible only after Joran had exhausted all appeal options in Peru. "That could take quite a long time," according to the International Law professor.

An interview with the mother of accused killer Joran van der Sloot that will air today on "Good Morning America" and "Nightline" cost ABC at least $100,000.

ABC won a spirited network bidding war for the interview last week, sources say.

The Dutch TV company that interviewed Anita van der Sloot twice -- in Dutch and then in English -- late last week assured the networks that the money was not going either to the mother or the 22-year-old accused killer.

But it appears that a portion of the $100,000 fee will go to pay Joran's lawyers in Peru, where he is charged with murdering a young woman, Stephany Flores.
