Law-enforcement officials were searching a house last night in Knox County, and nearby Kenyon College had locked down its campus, because four people who have been reported missing are thought to be victims of foul play.

The house is in the Apple Valley area of Howard Township. Kenyon College is about 7 miles away.

A 13-year-old girl missing for days was found bound and gagged but alive in a basement Sunday, and authorities hoped a man charged with kidnapping her might lead them to her mother, brother and another woman who disappeared with her.
Matthew J. Hoffman, 30, was arrested at his Mount Vernon home, where Sarah Maynard was found, Knox County Sheriff David Barber said. He said the girl was hospitalized in good condition but would give no details and did not say if she had been sexually abused.
Barber did not say what led investigators to Hoffman's home, a two-story house with tan siding and a large television antenna on the roof that is about 10 miles from the home of Sarah's family.

Police on Monday blocked off a park near a home where a teenage girl was found bound and gagged over the weekend.

Police cruisers have blocked off Foundation Park, which is near a home where a 13-year-old girl was found bound and gagged and a man was arrested on Sunday. The whereabouts of her mother, brother and another woman remained a mystery, however.

Hartz would not say what was found in the park. He says it's closed until a determination is made on whether it's a crime scene.

Ohio Sheriff: "Significant Evidence" (http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/11/16/ohio-sheriff-significant-evidence/)

Knox County Sheriff David Barber says investigators "have recovered significant evidence" in the search for clues in the disappearance of Tina Herrman, her friend Stephanie Sprang and Tina's 11 year-old son.
That evidence apparently includes a tarp and trash bags found closed with duct tape in Foundation Park in Mount Vernon, Ohio, across the street from the home of prime suspect Matthew Hoffman who police say had Herrman's 13 year-old daughter bound and gagged in his basement. Police also revealed Hoffman had a receipt from the nearby Wal-Mart for a tarp and trash bags, along with a t-shirt and deli sandwich.
The Sheriff is encouraging anyone who sees anything unusual, including trash bags, to call authorities and not touch the possible evidence. He's also asking people to call who may have seen any of the three vehicles involved in the missing persons case: Herrman's F-150 Ford Pickup, Sprang's silver Jeep Cherokee or Hoffman's Toyota Yaris compact.

Knox County Public Defender Bruce Malek, currently the attorney of record for alleged kidnapper Matthew Hoffman, told the News he did not see a need for Tuesday’s scheduled preliminary hearing regarding the kidnapping charge.
“It comes down to an issue of probable cause,” said Malek on the decision to waive the hearing. “Under these circumstances, we didn’t feel there was any reason to go forward with a hearing. We would have expected the prosecutor to put forth minimal evidence.”
The purpose of the hearing was to determine if the prosecution has ample evidence to continue holding Hoffman in the Knox County Jail under the $1 million bond set forth by Mount Vernon Municipal Court Judge Paul Spurgeon on Nov. 16. Preliminary hearings are held when cases have not yet been taken to the grand jury for an indictment.
