Noah Pippin was a U.S. Marine who served three tours of duty in Iraq. After his stint in the Marines, he joined the California National Guard and was to be deployed to Afghanistan. He left Michigan on August 25th to report back for duty and never arrived. He was last seen in Montana. Please see this article for the details.

it's been over three months
he might be alive & not want to be found (& quite honestly, I wouldn't blame him after three tours in Iraq) and he's probably suffering from PTSD wherever he is
I hope this family gets answers before Christmas even if it's not the answers they want

Well, it's a beautiful place to get lost in, that's for sure.
Hot springs for nice baths.
Plenty of wildlife for food.
National Forests, including Yellowstone.
Not many people there at all.
Skills of a marine, it's a pretty good place to heal your soul.
Three tours in Iraq as a marine, they should have known he'd had enough.
Joined the Guard with hope to stay State side, and what do they do but call him to go to Afganistan.
Now this really is a case of how much can one person take.
Give him a general discharge, and leave him alone.
He probably has a radio. Let him know it's safe to come home, then hope he does one day.
The National Guard needs to give him at least a general discharge, if not a medical one for ptsd. You can't go three tours in Iraq without it affecting you.
Give the guy a break already. He probably just wanted to wait it out for his pension. jeez.
They can pardon a turkey on Thanksgiving, so pardon this guy, thank him for his service, and let the guy heal already..........

Noah's parents tried to get them to start looking for Noah in September. The police would not launch a missing persons report. Noah's Dad decided to go to Montana to start searching on his own a couple of weeks ago. Evidently by getting the local media involved it then evolved to a full blown search. Noah's mother has been beside herself. No matter how hard they tried they could not get anyone to listen and get involved.

Y'all have been keeping up with the latest developments pretty well but I thought I'd chime in to fill in a few details and give the narrative as it is now. Noah Pippin is my brother. My parents and I traveled to Missoula, Kalispell, Hungry Horse, the Spotted Bear Ranger Station and the Blue Lakes area in early June a few weeks ago and made contact with several folks from the Forrest Service in that area and also met with Detective Sergeant Walsh with the Flathead Country SO. We spoke with a lot of people and handed out a number of posters and my parents were able to be on TV and tell some more about Noah's story thanks to Katy Harris a local TV reporter based in Kalispell. Some new information has come to light as a result of this.
1. Following the TV story a hunter who was part of a group of 3 hunters called my dad and said that he and his buddies had encountered Noah on the trail near My Lake which is in the back-country of the Flathead or Lewis and Clark National Forrest (this area is right in the border region between the two). They said that they saw him about 09/14/2010 and that he seemed in good health and shape but that he declined to stay with them for very long. He told them the route he had taken to get to that point and they gave him a few bottles of water and he went on his way. They also said that they had encountered a team of Forrest Service rangers around the same time and that they may have also had an interaction with Noah and the also saw a family that was hiking the trail a few days earlier who Noah probably would have passed up on his hike. The hunters also told us that Noah said he was headed to the White River Pass which is several miles mostly South of My Lake.
2. We did some checking with the Forrest Service and they were able to identify the rangers who were in the area that the hunters told us about and they did indeed encounter Noah on the trail. They spoke with him briefly and don't remember very much about the exchange, but they were able to give us some information about the family that had been hiking through around the same time but not their actual names.
3. Based on the information they gave us we were able to get a story into the local paper in the city where the family was from and they read it and called us. They said that they had encountered Noah on the trail in an area called Chinese Wall near Salt Mountain and that he had spoken with them for a bit but he declined to camp with them. They said that he spoke with them about his route and said that he wanted to continue following the Chinese Wall, South. The told him that soon the trail would leave the Chinese Wall and go East to detour around some rough terrain but he seemed to indicate to them that he intended to go off-trail and follow the Chinese Wall, South anyway.
4. We followed up on the lead that someone resembling Noah had been seen at a bar in Missoula by visiting all of the bars there and handing out posters of him. We came up absolutely empty there and I think that was a mistaken tip.
That's as much information as we have at this point. We don't have any more leads right now and we're trying to put some information out on hiking websites so that people who frequent the areas where we know Noah was will be aware that we're looking for him.
Here's the narrative so far with GPS coordinates for the locations where we know Noah was. The last GPS grids are the area where he was last seen and may have gone off-trail:
My brother Noah Pippin left my parents' house in late-August 2010 headed back to California in a rental car but he didn't show up for National Guard duty later in September. The first we knew that anything was amiss was when the National Guard folks called us asking where he was. The Michigan State Police were very slow to move forward with the case which prevented us from making much progress for a fair while last fall. The areas Noah disappeared in are very remote and mountainous and were of course not accessible during the winter months which is another reason why progress has been slow in our search. From what we've been told by the Forrest Service these areas will not be clear enough of snow to travel again until mid-July of this year. We've only been very slowly getting more information. We finally found out from Noah's credit card statements and phone records that he stayed in Hungry Horse, MT the night of August 31. We then contacted the authorities in Montana and they and the Forrest Service have been very helpful in trying to track Noah down. We know that he hiked into the Flathead National Forrest / Bob Marshall Wilderness along the Eastern route which begins in Martin City, MT 48.391057,-114.030147. That he traveled past the area of the Spotted Bear Ranger Station 47.928593,-113.526278 and through the Blue Lakes area 47.920814,-113.282154. We've recently learned that he encountered a group of hunters near My Lake 47.742036,-113.14064 on 09/14/2010 which is in the back-country of the Bob Marshall Wilderness/Flathead National Forrest/Lewis and Clark National Forrest. He told them that he was headed to the White River Pass 47.7427,-113.12047 which is many miles South of My Lake. Later he encountered a family hiking near the Chinese Wall and Salt Mountain 47.688388,-113.145103 and indicated to them that he intended to go off trail at this point 47.651166,-113.120384 on the Chinese Wall where the trail detours East to go around the perimeter of some rough terrain.
We're interested in finding people who have hiked these areas in the past or are planning on hiking them this year to ask them if they may have seen Noah last fall or if they're going to be in these areas if they could keep an eye out for any sign of him. If you can, please help us by letting other hikers know about Noah and where he was last seen. Please let me know if there's any more information that would be helpful to you or if you have any suggestions for communicating with hikers who use those areas.
Thank you all!

Filming about Noah's disappearance for the Discovery Channel tv show, "Disappeared", has begun. The film crew will be at our house Tuesday Aug. 9. I believe they have already begun filming with Detective Pat Walsh this week in Kallispel, Montana and they will be filming Aug. 7 with the Kersey family who last saw Noah at dusk Sept. 15 on the hiking trail in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The Kersey's live in Great Falls, Montana. We have been told this will probably air in the spring. Hoping nationwide audience will bring us some more leads.

As the mother of an active duty Marine, my heart goes out to the Pippin family. My hope is that Noah is alive & well & healing himself.
A Feb. 27 episode of "Disappeared" on the Investigation Discovery Channel will feature the story of an ex-Marine who was last seen near Salt Mountain in the Bob Marshall Wilderness on Sept. 15, 2010.

I did watch this episode and it seems as though Noah was walking into the storm on purpose, almost. He clearly made the trip to Montana on purpose, knowingly not checking in with the National Guard for his assignment, as he had researched it in advance. And despite warnings given to him by a family he met in the mountains, the last known people to see him, he went on alone into a storm and was never seen again. His mom felt he may be suicidal as soon as she heard he was missing, which really struck me, since that is usually the last thing a parent would think. And he did make a point of telling others me met along the way that he was armed. Very sad...he had already been to war in Irag, been an LAPD, but was very depressed when he quit the police force.

Does anyone know if and where his rental car was found? Also, has anyone considered that he might have been headed to Canada for whatever reason, due to it's proximity to where he was last sighted?
03-26-2012, 03:56 PM
The rental car was returned to the rental company's office at the Kalispell airport [by Noah] IIRC.

Parents thankful that Noah Pippin's remains found, offer gratitude to searchers
The body of missing soldier Noah Pippin was flown out of the Bob Marshall Wilderness on Saturday.
Pippin's parents Mike and Rosalie have been staying in the Flathead Valley during the search for their son.
"We are grateful to have closure after two years. Our mystery is solved," Mike said.
Searchers found a firearm with matching serial numbers to Pippin's pistol, a Pippin family photo, a card, and clothing in the area.
"That made a pretty strong identification, and so they just have to wait for a little bit more to make that 100 percent," Rosalie said.

Sheriff will trek into wilderness for key evidence in Pippin death
The search team will head to the location Pippin was found along Burnt Creek, which is a 2 and-a-half day hike from the South Fork Trailhead. While the Sheriff will not share what the evidentiary item is they're look for, he will say this:
"There is some question about the cause of death. That's the coroner's job. What my job is, is to gather all the evidence to support his conclusion, whatever conclusion he comes up with. This evidence in my opinion is still there and needs to be gathered."
