Arrest Article 7/7/2010: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/38133825/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/

Lonnie Franklin Jr., 57, was charged with 10 counts of murder, one count of attempted murder and special circumstance allegations of multiple murders that could make him eligible for the death penalty if convicted, District Attorney Steve Cooley said.

Detectives have spent years investigating slayings between 1985 and 2007 in which the killer targeted young black women and one man. The attacker was dubbed the "Grim Sleeper" because he apparently took a 14-year hiatus from his crimes, from 1988 to 2002.

August 27, 2008 article: http://www.laweekly.com/2008-08-28/news/grim-sleeper/

Task Force was assembled in 2007 under Chief Bill Bratton (http://www.laweekly.com/related/to/Bill+Bratton) to solve 11 perplexing murders in Los Angeles dating from 1985. Police have followed several trails, made a few arrests, and endlessly theorized about the killer or killers responsible. Homicide detectives have retired, new ones have joined the investigation. Each group thought they detected patterns, each group thought they had solid leads. Each was proved wrong.

Authorities this week released a 9-1-1 tape recorded shortly after a killing in 1987, in the hope of producing clues.
"Yes ... I'd like to report a murder," an anonymous caller says on the tape.

Sole Survivor: Early on Sunday, November 20, 1988, the E.R. doors crashed open at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (http://www.laweekly.com/related/to/Harbor-UCLA+Medical+Center) in Torrance (http://www.laweekly.com/related/to/Torrance). A woman had been sexually assaulted and shot, and the bullet that tore through her chest had collapsed her lung and made it nearly impossible to breathe. As workers rushed the blood-drenched victim, Enietra Margette, to surgery, she could hear scattered bits of conversation between two relatives who had raced to her side at the hospital, her aunt and uncle.

Ever since the L.A. Weekly broke the story about the Grim Sleeper serial killer in August of 2008 (http://www.laweekly.com/2008-08-28/news/grim-sleeper/), the news about his ongoing killings, which began in 1985 on the streets of South Los Angeles, has gone global. We dubbed the male suspect the Grim Sleeper because he took a 13-year break before suddenly resuming his slayings.

In fact, a few days after the Weekly's first story was published, a Web site (http://www.thegrimsleeper.com/) popped up dedicated to the murderous antics of the killer and providing readers with theories, a time line, maps, diagrams and even Google Earth images of some of the murder sites, all set off by the figure of a glow-eyed Dracula-esque figure wearing a cape and pointing a gun.

Since the July arrest of "Grim Sleeper" serial killer suspect Lonnie David Franklin Jr. for allegedly killing 10 people, Los Angeles police investigators have received 75 calls from the family and friends of missing women, wanting to know the fate of their loved ones.

After comparing information in those calls with evidence gathered in the Franklin investigation, detectives were soon able to discount most of the cases, said veteran homicide Det. Dennis Kilcoyne, head of the task force that tracked down the former city sanitation worker and police garage attendant. But Kilcoyne said investigators were taking a hard look at information generated by a handful of those contacts.

Officials are bracing for more inquiries with Thursday's release of images of about 160 women who were photographed or videotaped by Franklin.

Los Angeles Police Department detectives said releasing the photos of scores of women found in the possession of the Grim Sleeper serial killer suspect was an agonizing decision. But they concluded it was ultimately the only way to determine whether they had been harmed.
.................
Detectives said they were concerned about how those images should be presented to the public given that the women depicted were almost all partly or completely nude and striking sexually graphic poses.

"We are just trying to do what is right and decent," said LAPD Det. Dennis Kilcoyne, who heads the task force that arrested Franklin. "We are very cognizant of not causing embarrassment or anguish to the people depicted in the photographs."

The Los Angeles Police Department has tentatively indentified five of the dozens of women found in photos discovered on the "Grim Sleeper" serial killer's property.

Deputy Chief of Police and Chief of Detectives David R. Doan said that "five people have identified five specific names" from photos posted on the L.A.P.D.'s website. All claims came through their tip hotline.

He said that "three or four of the five at this point" have come forward and said "it was me in the picture."

"We have not confirmed that and we're going to personally interview everyone," Doan said.

Grim Sleeper suspect's attorney criticizes LAPD for releasing photos of women [Updated]

The attorney for Grim Sleeper serial killer suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr. criticized Los Angeles police for releasing scores of photos of women found in Franklin's possession.

In a statement, Louisa Pensanti complained that the photos were not part of discovery in Frankin's case and that some of the images were of Franklin's family and friends.

"The photographs include members and friends of the Franklin family, all now subject to the intense scrutiny of the public as well as the police," she wrote.

An LAPD source told The Times that detectives had asked Franklin's family to review the photos before they were publicly released so that ones of his family and friends could be removed. But the source said officials got not no reply to their requests. It's unclear whether Pensanti has now asked that any photos specifically be removed.

The Los Angeles Police Department was inundated with hundreds of phone calls, e-mails and other tips after detectives on Thursday released photographs of the unidentified women that were found in a trailer and garage belonging to Franklin, who has pleaded not guilty to 10 killings in South L.A. over three decades.

From that information, relatives and friends of 15 women have contacted LAPD robbery-homicide detectives to let them know they are alive and well, which investigators said was their primary goal in releasing the images in the first place.

In addition, detectives say they have received 75 tips that could prove important to the Franklin case.

Los Angeles police said Monday they have tentatively identified 21 of the roughly 160 women whose pictures were released last week in an effort to determine whether there were additional victims linked to the alleged Grim Sleeper serial killer.

After identifying the women, police removed their pictures from the LAPD's website. One picture was of Janecia Peters, 25, who was fatally shot on New Year's Day 2007 and was among the victims Lonnie Franklin Jr. has been charged with killing, police said.

A brutal but vital approach

Photos of possible 'Grim Sleeper' victims can provide answers

There were a million other things I should have been doing on the computer last Thursday night working on my weekend column, wrapping up my online holiday shopping....

But instead, I sat clicking one by one through 180 photos of women linked to a man accused of being a serial killer.

I studied the smiles, the eyes, the state of dress, or undress, of women whose images were found by police among the effects of the South Los Angeles man charged with 10 murders blamed on the " Grim Sleeper."

The Los Angeles Police Department wants to know the identity and fate of the women and to account for a 14-year gap in the string of serial killings. The Times posted the gallery online and published it on the front page after it was publicly released by the LAPD.

I can't say what bothered me most as I went from photo to photo images like the first, a tight-lipped close-up of what appears to be a dead woman, or the last, a young lady with a radiant smile and a missing front tooth.

It would be putting it mildly to say the photo tour unsettled me. It was horribly, chillingly mesmerizing. And I was far from the only one both fascinated and troubled by the images.

The Times' online gallery has drawn more than 18 million page views from more than 300,000 individuals a level of interest that shocked many in the newsroom. The number of clicks beat the single-day record for latimes.com, set the day Michael Jackson died. These couldn't all be people looking for missing family members and friends. I wasn't.

From the viewer comments it's clear the photos drew plenty of amateur sleuths, analyzing tinfoil-covered windows and tattoos. We heard from the curious and the concerned, the voyeuristic and the judgmental, the prayerful and the perverted.

Grim Sleeper didn't 'sleep,' LAPD says

Detectives believe two killings during the 13-year gap between groups of homicides were committed by Lonnie Franklin Jr. The lead investigator says he wouldn't be surprised if the gap eventually closes completely.
Los Angeles police say they have linked two more slayings to alleged serial killer Lonnie Franklin Jr. (http://www.latimes.com/topic/crime-law-justice/crimes/criminals/lonnie-david-franklin-jr.-PEOCVC0000098.topic), persuading detectives that he never stopped killing during the supposed dormant period that led to his nickname of the Grim Sleeper.

Accused 'Grim Sleeper' suspected in more deaths

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) A retired sanitation worker accused of murdering 10 women and girls who has been dubbed the "Grim Sleeper" may have killed eight additional victims, police said on Tuesday.

Police officials said there may be even more victims of Lonnie David Franklin Jr, 58, who allegedly targeted black women and girls in south Los Angeles in a string of killings that began in the 1980s.

Investigators said they were not free to release new information about the other eight potential victims until now.

Grim Sleeper: LAPD believes serial killer suspect reported slaying to 911

Now, prosecutors say it might have been Franklin himself who placed that 911 call.

They want permission to record Franklin's voice so they can compare it to the 24-year-old tape. A match of the voices would add to a trove of evidence -- including DNA -- that detectives say connects Franklin to at least 10 murders in the 1980s and 1990s.

The Grim Sleeper’s Trial Is Moving at Snail’s Pace, and Victims’ Families Are Furious

Notorious serial killer the Grim Sleeper was on the lam for decades. Now there’s a suspect, but his lawyers are dragging their feet. Christine Pelisek on the excruciatingly slow march to justice.

For the past three years, Diana Ware has often made the 30-mile bus trek from the middle-class suburb of West Covina, California, to the criminal-courts building in downtown Los Angeles. The bus drops her off a block from the courthouse, and she walks the rest of the way. “Lately it has been harder,” says the retiree. “It winds me, and I have a bad knee.”
The 74-year-old former office worker has made the journey to attend the pretrial hearings for “Grim Sleeper” serial killer suspect Lonnie Franklin Jr., the former sanitation worker accused of killing Ware’s 23-year-old stepdaughter, Barbara, and nine other women. Since Franklin was arrested on July 10, 2010, she has missed only two of over a dozen hearings, one because she had a doctor’s appointment.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The so-called "Grim Sleeper" serial murder suspect's trial was expected to take place this year. But it is far off schedule with no trial date in sight. Frustrated family members of the victims spoke out exclusively to Eyewitness News.
...
Ware and more than a half-dozen others came to Monday's pre-trial hearing as they have for all court proceedings in the case. They had expected Franklin's trial to be under way by now. Instead it has been one defense delay after another. In every hearing the prosecutors and the judge have prodded defense attorney Seymour Amster to move forward.

Monday the prosecutors brought evidence Amster had requested, but then Amster said he wanted to wait before taking it.

"I just feel it is a proper procedure just to have a paralegal there," said Amster.

LAPD officials and the district attorney say that the delays cost taxpayers money and victims' families pain.

SAN GABRIEL - There won't be justice for Rowenia Morris, if the Grim Sleeper trial proceeds as expected.

There won't be closure if her body is never found. But her family is seeking some semblance of closure anyway.

"I was hopeful that my sister was going to come home," said LaTanya Clark, who has followed the Grim Sleeper case closely ever since Morris was linked to the suspect, Lonnie David Franklin Jr., through photographs.
