Woman found dead, Amber Alert issued for daughter


TOPEKA, Kan. - Police were searching for the 5-year-old daughter of a woman who was found dead in her Topeka home Wednesday morning.
Authorities said they consider the girl's father a "person of interest" in both the abduction and the woman's death.

Police said Melissa Shirk, 31, was found dead in her home around 10:40 a.m. by a friend, and 5-year-old Stormy Shirk, who lives with her mom, was missing.

Justin Chadd Shirk, 29, is believed to have taken the girl, police said.

"We only issue Amber Alerts when a parent is involved if we believe a child is in imminent danger," said Whitney Watson, coordinator of the Amber Alert system for the state attorney general's office.

Justin Shirk, Melissa Shirk's ex-husband, is believed to be driving a gold, 2002 Dodge Intrepid with a Kansas veterans license plate, No. 59263. Officials said he might be on his way to Seaside, Ore., with the child.

Police spokeswoman Kristi Pankratz declined to say who owns the car, except that it is not owned by Justin Shirk.

Amber Alert ends in Wyoming, girl found safe

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) - A 5-year-old girl was found safe Wednesday after her father - considered a "person of interest" in the death of her mother in Topeka, Kan., earlier in the day - was found dead.
An Amber Alert was lifted around 9 p.m. after being in effect since mid-afternoon.

Police said Melissa Shirk, 31, was found dead in her home around 10:40 a.m. by a friend. Stormy Shirk, 5, who lives with her mom, was missing.

It was unclear how Justin Chadd Shirk, 29, died. He was Melissa Shirk's ex-husband.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations said a trucker in Paxton, Neb., spotted Justin Shirk and his daughter at 5 p.m. The KBI also said Shirk tried to use his credit card to buy gas in Paxton.

This poor baby. Because of her stupid father, both of her parents are now dead. The only good news is she is safe. :(

Appears as if he may have taken his own life?????? Thank God that as in the recent Texas missing persons case, they let the children live.
