NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Billy Ray Cyrus says the Disney TV show "Hannah Montana" destroyed his family, causing his divorce and sending daughter Miley Cyrus spinning out of control.
In a December interview published in the Feb. 22 issue of GQ Magazine, Cyrus said he wished the show that launched his daughter to pop stardom had never happened.

I am sorry he feels this way, but he helped launch her. If he hadn't a clue all he needed to do was take a look around, Britney Spears, Lindsey Lohan, Gary Coleman and the list goes on and on and on......
Show business and or music is no where for a child imo ....

Him saying he wished the show and th efame never happened is a far cry from blaming the show or disney IMO. The headlines are sensationalizing the situation a bit. I mean, he can't really blame the show or the network for his own choices regarding letting his daughter forrey into show business. His choices drove that show coming about. I understand his regret and don't blame him, but I wish the media would get it right. The headline makes him seem stupid, as if the show ruined his life rather than he and Tish's own choices.

It sounds like Billy Ray and Miley's mom didn't do any parenting (trying to be Miley's friend instead); and now that she's 18, he has no control over her anymore. Maybe Lindsay will get sent to jail and Miley can take her spot as Hollywood's Biggest Trainwreck while she's away. :D BTW, she's hanging out with the same people who sent the other teen star Demi Lovato to rehab; they were the people in the bong video who released the video and other private images and stuff. Her new "friends" + no longer working for Disney + legal age + = Trainwreck :D

Nancy, was it Kat in another thread said we should start one about child actors? How many turned out just right? O/T, but I was thinking ummmmm Alyssa Milano? The chick that played Kelly Bundy too?
Sad for this Miley girl. She has alot of stage prescence. Actual talent as a vocalist.
Snipped from the article:
Cyrus says in the interview that he tried too hard to be a friend instead of a parent to his daughter.
That right there ^^^^^^^

Why didn't Billy think to be a parent long ago while he rode the money train? Funny how they all start to complain when things start to fall apart. He and the wife were a friend to their child instead of parents, then they wonder what went wrong?? Doe....
I wish Miley all the best in life and hope she is just going to spread her wings a bit and grow out of it.
Note: the kid on the show with Alyssa Milano turned out pretty good too, the one who played her brother and some of those kids from the other sitcom, ah Cameron I think his name is.

Well, Alyssa's brother on Who's the Boss showed off his privates on some Webcam. LOL. So um, whatever floats his boat. And then Kirk Cameron is a bit weird nowadays. He got a girl fired from Growing Pains because she posed for Playboy, he refuses to kiss another girl in a film because he's married, and on his website, he had a quiz called, "Are you going to hell?"
It seems that for a lot of these child/teen stars, if they don't end up on drugs, they are just weird in the head, like there is something off. But I don't think you can really compare Miley to teen stars of the past because back then, it was just Tiger Beat that wrote about stuff and they sugarcoated everything; now you have the Internet and nothing is a secret. It does seem like the bigger the teen star, the more likely he or she will be messed up as an adult (see: Corey Haim) and Miley is definitely a big teen star.
It is sad in a way that the whole country has been waiting to see whether or not she becomes a train-wreck since Hannah Montana premiered. You never hear people talking about future train-wreck Dakota Fanning. I remember when HM premiered and if she does become a hot mess, it's going to be weird to know that I watched it happen.
But anyway I look at all her scandals in 2 ways...One, this could be the worst that she'll be and she'll grow up fine or these scandals could be the beginning of a downward spiral. I've heard rumors of her doing cocaine and heroin; obviously just rumors, but she is in Hollywood where there is plenty of drugs. It wouldn't surprise me at all if she tried that stuff at least once.

I did not know about the privates being shown then again, I don't study these stars in depth. I just never heard of him doing anything.
Kirk Cameron is a Born Again Christian so his beliefs may be different from those that are not of his faith. If that makes him weird, so be it.

I agree. Kirk Cameron has morals which may make him seem weird because we don't see a whole lot of morals these days. As for Miley, I'm thinking them being friends instead of parents may be more the cause for her behavior than the show. And the money certainly doesn't help.

Hi Filly! I had suggested a child actor thread for the PL on the LL thread.

As much as Miley Cyrus annoys me, I don't think she's done anything that a lot of normal teenagers don't do....she just happens to be in the limelight. I mean, how many of us drank when we were underage or experimented with drugs or had sex too early? I'm not saying it's right, I am just saying more teenagers than not do these things.
I also don't think that her parents are necessarily bad parents, at least her father is now realizing his mistakes. Hindsight is always, always 20/20. Hopefully Miley is just going through a rebellious phase. She's still very young, I have hope she'll be just fine.

Patty Duke talks about the perils of being a child star often. I adored her in her show when I was a child. She lived a tough life due to those early years.
She is an accomplished woman and a great advocate for Depression.
Read her book if you have not. I think she would excel as a speaker to young actors.

I'm glad Billy Ray finally realized he was being used. It has seemed for awhile that he was supporting her actions but the article I read says he has finally realized he was being used to throw any bad publicity his way rather than Miley's. I've had a lot of respect for him through the years and it's good to see he now sees what's going on.

I think it's a bit of a cop-out to say "troubles" are the natural result of being a child actor/singer, as this removes the responsibility of the individual kids and their families. There should be ample warning to families about what stardom can do to kids, so they should consider themselves forewarned, and not blame the stardom when their kids end up a mess. Plenty of kid actors/singers end up okay - that wasn't just luck.
I am not a fan of kid stardom, really, but if my kid had a strong desire, drive and talent, and the constitution to handle it, I wouldn't stand in his way. Some people just know what they were meant to do younger than others, and I wouldn't be the one to derail his aspirations. I'd just make sure he was doing his homework and taking out the trash, etc, etc, during.

maybe this will seem harsh but here goes: oh boohoo to Billy Ray. The man was in the industry YEARS before he pimped out his daughter, so he's is no innocent bird here... he knew what he was getting into by his own experience in the entertainment industry.
Even before Disney got Miley, she was a brat... I remember him doing an interview with one of those tv magazine shows (ET, maybe?), making her a part of it when she was a teeny tiny thing, and OMG, she was running around all over their ranch being a rude little kid... not cute... RUDE. Billy Ray has been putting that child out there on the public stage for attention since she was a baby. (How much you want to bet he courted Disney to get her on...).
Hey Billy Ray: you have to own the blame, too. And hey, it is not just Miley you are dealing with... you let your tween, Noah, create a lingerie line for kids and work in the industry as well.

No TV show or fame can ruin a child - if they have a solid family life and parents that keep them grounded. While there are many child actors who have "issues", there are some that do not.
For example, I remember reading about Emma Watson (from the Harry Potter movies) not knowing that she was worth millions b/c her parents kept her in the dark about it and gave her a $75/week allowance as a teen: http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20438345,00.html
Other child actors/performers that seem well-grounded: Jodie Foster, Natalie Portman, Jonas Brothers, etc.
I do think the pressure of a child with so much fame can take over and the entire focus for a family - and it takes a lot to keep that family sane, functional, and a nurturing/supportive environment.

From the outside looking in, this is when I knew Miley was going down the wrong path. So did the media - many outlets wrote about how upset the country was at those photos. Yet, they allowed it to happen. :(
Very sad. Hindsight is so very 20/20. When our kids are concerned, it is heartbreaking.

I'm glad her father has regrets, but it bothers me that he seems to be blaming others. I have a 6 year old, so we have Disney on a lot over here, and it seems like they make a lot of efforts to keep their shows "innocent". I don't think the show (or his decision to put her on it) is what ruined the family, and I feel like he (or the media?) is giving Disney a bad name and trying to shift the blame. He even thinks Satan is attacking the family??? Okay.
I think his daughter's ego is out of control, and I think he's always encouraged it. I don't know them, its just my opinion - but that's just the vibe I get from her. They really play up the "daddy's little girl" thing in the show, and I just feel like she's been spoiled rotten her whole life. Little girl wanted her own TV show, and rich daddy got it for her. It was just an added plus that he was brought back to fame along with it, when he hadn't really much been heard of since 1993!! I don't think she's a very good singer, and I think her acting is average. I'd be happy if she disappeared from the spotlight, but then, some other girl will just come and take her place (for worse, probably).
I like Disney's other girl star, Selena Gomez, much better - but who knows, she might end up a wreck herself in a few years.

Oh heck yes I agree one hundred percent. He had been in the industry for years. He knew exactly what to expect for his daughter to go through.
He was just too busy being her "friend".
But having gone back and rereading that article, I agree he spends much of the time (other than the statement above and one other statement) displacing all blame. That it's not his fault and that every poor choice in her life was in PRed as his fault? That makes my nose crinkle. Yuck.

By weird do you mean devoted Christian? Kirk Cameron is a very vocal Christian and does not do things that he feels is wrong. (such as kissing someone else because he is married)
The "are you going to hell" issue is also a Christian issue.
IMO being a Christian does not equal weird.
He's done well for himself and is a great example. IMO he does not belong in this list of wayward child actors.

Ummm, yeah she has. Most normal teenagers don't go posing for semi-nude photos in their father's laps... have people forgotten about that??? It wasn't that long ago. So I feel Billy Ray has contributed to the monster Miley's become, yeah she's out of control. She's trying to project a bad girl image to shed her little girl one. He was a better parent to her on the show, he actually stood up to her.
Moreover my objection to the Hannah Montana show (besides showing lack of respect for adults), is that she wasn't good enough to be just a brunette singer, she had to hide herself behind a blonde wig. What kind of message does that send to little girls???

From the Vanity Fair article:
“That’s just my personality. I don’t get shaken or stirred up over anything. Which can be a problem sometimes. I’m just, like, so no emotions. I just don’t let things faze me. I’m very much like my dad. My dad’s like this.”
Interesting statement.
Also blanket picture at that link.
It seems very suggestive for a 15 year old but maybe that is just me.

Billy Ray made a lot of money from his singing career. They were living on a 500-acre farm right outside of Nashville before Miley got Hannah Montana; and that definitely had to cost a lot of money. Even if Miley had never gone into acting, they still would be living an upper class lifestyle. It's not like the family would be on welfare (or anywhere near it) if Miley had never gotten Hannah Montana.

As to the photo with Miley and Billy Ray, I do not get that uggy feel from it described by Kat, nor do I consider what she is wearing to be semi-nude as LinusK suggests.
I think Miley is being a teen and experiencing growing pains. I think she's used some poor judgment lately and hope she learns from these minor mishaps before they become major mistakes, As to Billy Ray's regrets, well, such is life, who among us doesn't have them. It is what it is. You make your choices and then you try to live with em.

There are other photos taken during the same shoot where she was bare-backed and only wearing a sheet, kinda like Casey Anthony's flag photo. The one in her father's lap still looks like how you'd pose with a boyfriend, not your father, and she's still got a bare middrift. Still looks creepy.

I never understood the flap over those photos. I actually think some of them are very beautiful.
I think Billy Ray is going through some rocky waters right now with the demise of a long marriage and he is feelings raw and vulnerable and thinking out loud in this interview about regrets and what-not. But he strikes me as an optimist and I'm sure he'll be okay.
I've always had a warm spot for Miley. I think, thus far, she has handled growing up in a super magnified fishbowl with amazing grace. Prayers for the whole family!

I was commenting on the photo shown upthread where she is clothed. Bare midriff is something I can live with as long as cleavage isn't spilling out into her father's lap.
I was thankfully unaware of the other photo you described. I find the sexualization of teen and younger girls that is so rampant nowadays regretable. Would there be such photos if there were not such demand? Would there be such demand if there were no such photos? I wish I had the answer to that one.

I think the sense of entitlement and pathalogical narcism that certain segments of our youth today have about their apparently divine right to spend all their time in clubs and carte blanche to abuse substances and focus entirely on their shalow sense of sexuality to the detriment of anything else is as much to blame as Show Business.
The old its a 'Right Of Passage' they have it coming B.S.
I think Miley Cyrus is obviously a textbook example of the phenomenom.
You could see the writting on the wall when she was defiantly parading around looking like she was all of 15 a few years ago with some 20-something looking Chip and Dales refugee.
I was wondering where are her people?

I really doubt Billy Ray was hurting for cash, he made millions, himself, and he didn't seem to be real extravagant, unless he blew his millions somewhere. But barring that, he was pretty well set for life between his singing career in the 90's and acting gigs after that.

True..True..True...The only thing that gets under my skin is that ms Miley was contracted to reach youngsters..and in doing that make tons of money..I find it unfortunate that somewhere in that contract that No party could do or being seen to undermind that influence....only thing I can liken it to would be "Micky Mouse Club Mouseketeers"....I cant imagine any of those folks crossing that line until out of contract or overage...JMOO

That was back in the '50s, '70s, and '90s when the media wasn't like it is today. If those cast members went to a party and got drunk, no one would ever find out about it. Now we have TMZ outside of every nightclub to take pictures and videos of all the celebrities. Most of Miley's scandals would have never "existed" if she had been famous 25 years ago.
This is another picture of Miley and Billy Ray that people find...a bit strange:

I would agree that Billy Ray shoild have thought through what kind of world he was dropping his daughter into.
Though Im sure he would have been fine financially without Hannnah Montana.
Its a little late to be crying now.
I really dont beleive that the mindlessly shallow hedonistic 'club' lifestyle that so many of these spoiled entitled entertainment industry teens dedicate themselves to deserves to be written off as a 'rite of passage'.That lends it more validation then it deserves. Its crap plain and simple.
How did we come to equate amoral behavior and substance abuse with 'spreading your wings '?
I can assure you Miley Cyrus will not have a career five years from now, unless its Celebrity Rehab.
I have a 12 year old daughter Miley was over with the tweens a year ago.

I just don't understand... I know parents love their kids, I just feel like Miley is his favorite. Sounds silly... he's just always in her business... meanwhile I see pictures of her 10 year old sister dressed like a hooker and acting just like Miley, only... she's 10. I never see Billy Ray mention her, and I have rarely even see him in pictures with her - it is usually his ex. He's always with Miley.
I think Miley is the least of his problems if his 10 year old is already acting this way. I think she'll be even bigger trouble in a few years, and Miley's antics will have been forgotten.

I hope she manages to get her ego in check and earn a little perspective.
The bottom line is she's so far hasnt demonstrated anything in the way of outstanding talent certainly nothing that would sustain a long term career, her singing is mediocre at best even with all the auto tune and studio wizardry her expensive producers can bring to it.
Her acting would be serviceable for a local Civic Theater production not much more.
Of course she already is quite well off financially so maybe she doesnt care.
Perhaps she'll figure out that in order to be an artist of substance you have to be a person of substance first and squandering your life force and credibilty with club trash friends and substance abuse isnt the way to acheive that.

Since I didn't have little kids around, I didn't know who HM was until Oprah had a show with her performing. Those little girls (that have parents spending big bucks on the stuff) were hysterical and awed to say the least. She wasn't acting sexy and it was fun to watch - we all had our idols - Elvis, Beatles, etc. As Miley got older, so did these little girls. I doubt any will use her as an excuse for their own bad behavior but perhaps parents can learn to teach their kids that these "stars" are playing a role. Now who is going to teach the parents of these role players is the question.

I agree with you that her little sister, Noah, is at a much bigger risk for become a train wreck.
Here's a picture of her when she was 9 or 10:

I feel bad for the kid because she is constantly called "ugly" by commenters on articles about her. People didn't really start making fun of her until she started wearing lots of makeup and dressing inappropriately for her age.

BRC calls off divorce...
I'm not sure why but when I heard that the divorce had been called off the only thing I could think of was the way it was stated:
I called off the divorce.
as opposed to:
We called off the divorce.
or
We talked about and we are going to make this work we are going to save our family.
Nope. We get "I" called off the divorce.
Not sure why---but that really irked me. Sorry. Might just be me.
