Grew up in Highland and Munster - the two towns are side-by-side and very densely populated suburbs of Hammond and Gary. The only secluded spaces to speak of are the towns' parks, which are surrounded by neighborhoods, and the area surrounding the Cady-Marsh Ditch ( a fairly nasty smelling stream that runs along the southern border of both towns and separates them from Hammond) .

NW Indiana police look for missing doctor

Police in Northwest Indiana are asking for the public's help in finding a Munster, Ind., doctor who has been missing since March 21.

Doctor Promila Mehta-Paul, 70, was last seen last Monday at her medical office on Kennedy Avenue in Highland, Ind., according to a release from the Munster Police Department. She did not show up for work on Tuesday, despite having several appointments on her calendar, and gave no notice that she wouldn’t be coming to work.

Mystery surrounds Indiana doctor's disappearance

" Up until recently, she lived alone at her home in Munster. One of her three adult sons had moved back from California and was also living here.

Dr. Paul’s office was Highland.

She was last seen Monday night by her office staff. There’s been no cell phone or credit card activity since."

Police say missing Munster doctor could have faced foul play

"The 70-year-old doctor was last seen about 5 p.m. March 21 making a night deposit at First Financial Bank, 2611 Highway Ave., Highland, according to Munster Police Detective Michael Janiga. He confirmed Mehta-Paul is seen on bank video and was driving her gold 2001 Toyota Rav4, which is now missing.

Mehta-Paul lived alone; however, a son had recently been staying with her at the Munster house. The son’s 1997 Acura is at the residence as is missing a California license plate, Scheckel said.

Scheckel said detectives are working to get in touch with the son. Scheckel also said Mehta-Paul’s SUV could either have a California or Indiana license plate."

So, a 70 yr old woman, a still working doctor, goes missing on a Mon., after making a bank deposit.
Her car is missing.
An adult son recently moved back in with her.
From the news article, police have not spoken with him yet.
And it has been 6 days since she went missing.

There could have been a car accident.
Did she have a good relationship with her son?
Did she have any financial troubles?

I wonder what the time of her last cell phone conversation was.

Investigators did check the eye doctor's residence shortly after her disappearance, only finding the son's 1997 Acura still in the driveway but missing a California license plate.

Detectives are working to get in touch with the son and add that the doctor's SUV could have Indiana license plate DW2031, or California license plate 6LHZS319.

It sounds to me as if the son is also missing, or can't be located by LE, and one of his car's plates could possibly be on her vehicle. I'm curious if the missing plate is from the rear of his vehicle where the registration tags would be - which would be a more likely indication it had been put on another car. And of course, I also am curious not only what time her last cell phone conversation was, but where the phone last pinged from. MOO

Police said Tuesday, however, they had located a family member for whom they'd been searching.

Munster investigators say Dr. Paul lived alone until one of her sons moved from California recently. He briefly disappeared this week, but police say all three of the doctor's other children are cooperating.

..and..

"We were looking for the one son. We were unable to locate him, but as of this morning, we did find him. He is in California, and our investigators did talk to him. I can't tell you the details of the conversation, but they did locate him," said Munster Police Department Sgt. Steven Kovacik.

That seems to be the same article I used to open the thread, which was one of the first reports on the doctor being missing. I agree, something doesn't make sense. I'd still like to know which license plate (front or rear?) is missing. If it is from the front, it doesn't seem like a big deal, as he may never have put it on the car. If it is from the rear, it would have the registration tags on it, which would lead to the next question, who removed it? :waitasec: MOO

Police searched her home, office and subdivision as well as railroad tracks along 45th Avenue, nearby wooded areas and the creek that runs behind the property line of her Munster home. The investigation of her home revealed she had not been there for several days. Her home is near Twin Creek Park, which connects via pedestrian bridge to White Oak Park.

Almost all news articles mention that police say her home looks like she has not been there in several days.
Could they tell by newspapers and mail not picked up?
So, she was reported missing on Tues., after she did not show for hospital rounds.
And if the police went out that day, then had she not been going home?

Was she staying with friends? Doubtful, as they would have been in touch with police by now.
Why was she away from her home? Had there been hard feelings between her and her adult son? Why did he leave and when did he leave and go back to CA?
Did he fly, Amtrak, drive?

And why is his car missing one of its plates?

I also have questions about the "several days". If co-workers and friends began to contact LE on Wednesday, 3/23, and she was last seen Monday evening, that doesn't constitute several days if LE immediately went out to her residence. However, what isn't clear is exactly when they did go to her house. I am also curious about her son's trip back to California, and if it had been scheduled in advance. I would also think if she were staying somewhere else, such as with someone or at a hotel, there would have been that information provided to LE. It's all very strange since everything seemed normal on Monday, including her making the bank deposit after work. MOO

Thanks for the clarification. I'm a relative newbie and haven't really noticed the difference.
Having said that, I grew up in da' Region as it's known. Went to elementary in Munster, high school in Highland. The two towns are very densely populated suburbs of Hammond/Gary with very little in the way of open space. The parks are surrounded by subdivisions, except Homestead Park in Highland which is bordered by the Borman Expway (I 80/94) and the Cady-Marsh Ditch (a smelly stream which borders the southern edge of both towns.
This is a puzzlement. She is a very well-respected, long established physician in the area.

I still would like more of an explanation about the missing license plate, however, I also wonder if it is possible someone followed her from the bank, thinking she was withdrawing money instead of depositing it, and figured her to be an easy target for a robbery. Most articles state she was last seen at her medical office, although since she made the bank deposit, she should have been on the bank's surveillance video also. MOO

Seems the lawsuit has been dragging on a long time.
She was 70 yrs old, maybe she felt she wanted to retire, and wanted that missing pension money returned.

I am sure police will be taking a long look at her ex husband and his acquaintances.

Fifteen years is a long time, and that part of the article really got my attention -

“We’ve talked to all the family members,” said Munster Police Sgt. Steven Kovacik, including Dr. Paul’s ex-husband, Munster pediatrician Dr. Shashi Daman Paul, 67. The couple has continued to battle in court over marital assets since their 1991 divorce filing.
.....and........
The former spouses have pursued a long and stormy dispute over money. And oldest son, Paresh Paul, 38, who in recent years had lived with his mother, has been arrested for battery, public intoxication and driving under the influence.

Note: Read the section: epic divorce battle.
The couple continued to fight in and out of court. In 2003, Shashi Damon Paul allegedly crashed into his wife’s car along Woodhollow Drive in Schererville, according to a complaint she filed in Lake Superior Court.

It certainly is a contentious relationship years after their divorce.
She has told a newspaper in 1999 that his first wife hanged herself in 1971.

It is so sickening to me that a hard-working elderly person cannot live out their life in peace and free of fear...I am so sad for this woman, whom I fear is not alive, and probably at the hands of a family member, as usual.

So much of the crime here is committed by family and friends, it makes me wonder why everyone is so fearful of random violence, when the danger seems to be far more serious and likely right at home...

fascinating article. without accusing anyone of anything I find it odd that this court battle of this duration would lead to violence now, i.e. ex-husband to ex-wife.

Dr. Mehta-Paul could have been a target of opportunity, some crackhead looking for fast money with her legal history completely unknown to a street thug.

I'd be more curious to know to whom her last will and testament leaves her money, whether she made any recent changes to it or had contemplated making any changes to it.

Good grief. Is the police chief saying that there is no suicide, they don't think it is foul play, but her passport might be missing? They don't want to say no or yes.?
There have been sightings in the neighborhood?
What is that? Just the usual kind of sightings after someone goes missing. Did people that know her well recognize her?
Is she hiding out from someone in her past?
Did she leave the country with no word to anyone?

I gather from this article that she did make it home that evening and then both she and her car are now missing.

On Monday afternoon, FOX Chicago News tracked down her ex-husband, Dr. Daman Paul. He said he hasn't seen his ex-wife in 20 years. He was walking out of his own workplace with a computer in his arms, a fact that Munster police found unusual.

Interesting since an article in post #32 states:

"In 2003, Shashi Damon Paul allegedly crashed into his wife’s car along Woodhollow Drive in Schererville, according to a complaint she filed in Lake Superior Court."

There have been sightings in the neighborhood?
What is that? Just the usual kind of sightings after someone goes missing. Did people that know her well recognize her?

this is just my take. the Indian community in NW Indiana is not very large - certainly larger than it was say even 10 years ago, but unless things have changed dramatically since I was last in the area like 5 years ago, I am not aware of any "communities" as such where Indians reside.

my hunch is that while Munster may be more advanced socio-economically, well-meaning locals might be calling the police whenever they see an elderly Indian woman without any knowledge of whether it is Dr. Paul or the wife of the owner of a local convenience store.

Somehow I am more confused than before.
I don't think foul play has been ruled out, but apparently suicide has, as well as the possibility of robbery for drugs or cash. However, I seriously doubt she is voluntarily missing as she did make the bank deposit that evening, hasn't withdrawn any large amounts of cash, and hasn't left any trail of evidence suggesting she is still alive. I don't take the "sightings" seriously as we know how valid "sightings" haven't been in past cases, starting with Laci........

Scheckel said police are investigating those tips and others. He confirmed that Mehta-Paul did not leave a suicide note and did not appear to be despondent or sad. “The investigation is not going in that direction at all,” he said. “Suicide has been ruled out.”

He also said no drugs appeared missing from her home or office and she hadn’t made any large financial transactions recently.

Scheckel said Munster police are conducting a forensic analysis of her computer and hope it offers new evidence.

“We’re in the process of doing all that now,” he said. “It’s taking a while and we don’t have anything revealing yet.”

Scheckel would not comment whether Mehta-Paul faced any large financial obligations or debts and declined to characterize her relationship with her three sons, one of whom recently lived with her. The other two reside out of state. He said police have interviewed all of the sons as well as Mehta-Paul’s ex-husband, pediatrician Shashi Damon Paul, who lives in Schererville and practices in Munster and LaJolla, Calif.

Police: Missing Doctor’s Son Has Criminal Record

"As WBBM Newsradio 780′s Steve Miller reports, one of the doctor’s sons spent time in a California state prison.

The charge was burglary, and the conviction resulted in a two-year sentence. Mehta-Paul’s son served less than a year and was paroled, and the parole ended last July.

Part of that case had involved a charge of assault with a caustic chemical, but it was dropped."

I sadly think she was disposed of between IN and CA, and her car was sold/disposed of in CA - and has the missing tag on it. :(

This week as police searched for his wife, Shashi Paul was back in Munster, where he practices three weeks a month. For one week each month the children’s doctor commutes to LaJolla, Calif., a wealthy community located near San Diego, where he shares a practice with three other pediatricians.

Munster police confirmed that the couple’s 38-year-old son, Paresh Paul was arrested this month for driving under the influence after being stopped for speeding. Earlier this decade he was charged in a battery case that was later deferred and dismissed, according to Lake County court records. In his mother’s bankruptcy case, Shashi Paul claimed that he’d deposited thousands of dollars in a bank account for his son, Paresh, whom he said drained the account without his knowledge. At deadline, Paresh Paul could not be reached for comment.

“Although we were involved in a contentious divorce 20 years ago, I moved on with my life and have been happily married for the last seven years,” Shashi Paul read from a statement.

“As a father, I am worried about my sons’ having to deal with the disappearance of their mother. I have cooperated with the investigation and direct all inquiries to the Munster Police Department. For the sake of the investigation I will not reveal the nature of my cooperation with the police and will not discuss family business in public. I hope you will respect my privacy and do nothing to hinder the police investigation.”

Highland Police Cmdr. George Georgeff said that Munster police have assumed the lead role in the investigation because “it appears it appears that nothing criminal happened in the town of Highland,” Georgeff said. “If any criminal acts occurred, we think they would have occurred in Munster, not Highland.”

He explained that after leaving her office and making a deposit at the First Financial Bank on 45th Street and Kennedy Avenue in Highland, Mehta Paul apparently made it home that night.

“We did a search warrant on her house and her neighbor’s and we have pretty good idea that she made it home,” Georgeff said. “But we will continue to assist Munster police. We will work this to the end and stick with them.”

Search continues for doctor, who went missing one month ago today

The search continues for Dr. Promila Mehta-Paul one month after she was last seen making a bank deposit in Highland after leaving her Highland medical practice.

"This is an active ongoing investigation. We're working on this full-time," Munster Police Chief Steve Scheckel said of the search for the 70-year-old ophthalmologist.

A key in the investigation is finding Mehta-Paul's vehicle, he said. The Munster woman's gold 2001 Toyota Rav4 has an Indiana license plate of DW2031.

The silence on this case has been absolutely deafening. I have been trying to gather information on this case since I joined the site, and the media reports are limited to the few articles that have already been posted, plus one dude's blog detailing just how much animosity there was between the two doctors Mehta-Paul.

One thing that's really bothering me about this case is the fact that no one in the community--and by "community" I mean specifically the Indian/Indian-American community--has said a word about this. Usually if there's a missing person I can find their cases on one of the Indian-American papers or blogs I read, or my mom tells me about them after reading papers written in India or talking to her friends in the community. The only other road I can possibly take is perhaps asking a family friend if she's heard about this case; both she and Dr. Mehta-Paul are Indian physicians of about the same age. There's a chance that they might have crossed paths at a seminar out of state.

Oh, and should I submit this story as a tip to the Sepia Mutiny blog? They're a blog about desis in America, and they've run stories about missing NRIs before.

"Desi" is a term that refers to a person of South Asian origin, primarily from Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. It comes from a Sanskrit word that means "homeland".

NRI means "non-resident Indian". It is a term that applies to those of Indian origin that live in other countries (emigres).

I am interested to know how in some articles they found out if Dr. M-P traveled to India. I'm a US citizen with a PIO (Person of Indian Origin) passport, which means I'm entitled to leave the US without having to go through the visa process enter India. If Dr. M-P is a US citizen, I think that she, like my parents, also has a PIO passport and would therefore be more difficult to trace because there's only a record of her passports and not a visa application process.

I've been lurking- followed this case for a long time, though never posted on it. I have always believed Dr. M-P's son was a person of interest. I found it odd that he disappeared around the same time his mom did, but cropped up in CA later, while his car was still in IN, missing a license plate. I always wondered if Dr. M-P's son did something terrible to his mom, put his CA plate on her car, and drove back to CA, which is where the police eventually found him.

I pray that justice is served, and is swift.

Family Offers $20,000 Reward

Family members of a missing Munster doctor are offering up to $20,000 for information connected to her disappearance last year, police said.

The family of Dr. Promila Mehta-Paul is offering two $10,000 rewards in connection to her case, according to a Munster police news release.

One reward is for information that leads to the discovery of the doctor's body. The other is for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people who were responsible for her disappearance.

Police believe she disappeared as part of a criminal act and that she is dead, the release states.

MUNSTER | The aerial surveillance footage of a petite brunette mid-stride, carrying a white envelope as she steps away from her gold SUV, the driver's side door ajar, is the last known image of Dr. Promila Mehta-Paul.

It was captured a year ago today.

I just wish I could figure out what he did with HER vehicle. I grew up down the street from her office, and lived Munster for a time as well. Lake County Indiana is heavily populated - basically a contiguous city with Chicago.

You have to go really far to get anywhere you or I would consider 'remote'. There are certainly very, very few places to hide a vehicle. It must be in water somewhere (I think all the missing vehicle/ people combos are in water - that's just me. My cousin was almost a missing person after he accidentally drove into a reservoir and drowned.)

Maybe he'll let slip to a cell mate - wishful thinking.

Ind. doctor's 2011 disappearance now a cold case

Two years after a northwestern Indiana doctor vanished, her disappearance has become a cold case investigated by police only when they receive new tips.

[snip]

Authorities said that Mehta-Paul's eldest son remains the primary person of interest in the case. Paul M. Fontaine, 40, is serving a prison term until April 2014 on forgery charges stemming from when he tried to sell his mother's car six months after she disappeared.

[snip]

"It's really frustrating," he said. "It's like knowing who stole your purse but not being able to prove it."

More Than Two Years Later, No Break In Ind. Eye Doctor’s Disappearance

For two years now, police in Munster, Ind. have been searching for an eye doctor who vanished.

[snip]

Police say one of the doctor’s sons, Paresh Paul, is still considered a person of interest. He has never been charged in connection with his mother’s disappearance.

He was detained by border patrol days after she vanished — he was walking back across from Mexico — and hasn’t talked to police since.

Dr. Mehta-Paul’s DNA is now part of a missing persons database, in case it turns up somewhere.
