PLEASE review this forum thoroughly before posting today:

:tos: Here they are!

PLEASE avoid posts that are:

- bashing the defendant's looks or grooming, in words or through visual images

- using derogatory or demeaning terms to refer to players in this case

- snarky to fellow WSers

- otherwise sending the thread off-topic.

Posters who continue to ignore the TOS or the Rules of Etiquette will find themselves on a Time Out.

If you come across a post that violates TOS or the Rules of Etiquette, or that is clearly taking the thread off-topic, the appropriate response is to hit the red triangle "Alert" button, leave a message for our mods, and move on. Please do not quote the offending post or comment upon it in any way. The mods are equipped with brooms and light sabers and will do everything in their power to make sure that WS continues to be the premier true-crime forum on the Web.

Thank you to the many posters who have helped the mods by alerting on questionable posts these last days.

And please, DO "thank" this post if you intend on posting in the real time threads today.

I'm going to try to clarify a few things so hopefully we are a little clearer about what is okay to post in this thread and what is to be saved for Sidebar. Hope this helps. :)

Re: posting Tweets - Previously we have requested that all tweets be restricted from this thread and posted in the Twitter thread. Posting single tweets from anyone inside the courroom that can shed light on what we are unable to see via our monitors are fine to post here. (note: repetitive, multiple posts of the same tweet will be removed at mod discretion so they do not clog up the thread.) Most all of these will be from MSM reporters - I really can't think of any exceptions off of the top of my head. If they can tell us how jurors are reacting, that is huge, relevant info and we need to see it here. I ask that those of you who do post tweets still include them in the Twitter thread because we have many members who log in for a quick update and depend solely on that thread.

Re: posting about the demeanor of the defendant or witnesses -
This is the deal:
It is perfectly fine to post FACTS & OBSERVATIONS about their demeanor. (e.g., Casey is emotionless; Casey is giggling while listening to this testimony, etc...)

It is the "Casey's blouse is so low cut she must be trying to get the attention of Juror #11, the George Clooney look-a-like"; "eyebrows and hair" ('nuff said :aktion1:). Bottom line, if it doesn't add anything to understanding what is going on during TRIAL, then save these comments and post them in the Sidebar. Express those sentiments there. (Remember! TOS and Rules of Etiquette still apply in Sidebar: no namecalling, bashing and derogatory remarks simply intended to be snarky.)

Okay, I hope that helps clarify a few things.

Dr. V saying that when an organism dies the cells do not realize this and continue to function and they give off CO2 which is acidic. The CO2 builds up (the acid). One structure in a cell is called a lysosome. It is surrounded by a single membrane. Because the cell is becoming acidic the organelles with a single membrane burst first... so the cells begin to digest themselves. This is auto digestion and blisters form on the skin. The cells are now liquid so you see skin slippage.

Stages of decomposition

Early Stage:
Autolysis - self digestion. Cells continue metabolizing after the death. One of the byproducts of metabolism is CO2. Usually removed by cells by circulation & respiration, but if those cease after death, CO2 builds up inside cells. CO2 is acidic. Lysosome is an organelle inside the cell is surrounded by a single membrane. Because the cell is becoming acidic, the lysosome is among the first structure to break down, and the enzymes inside it begin digesting the cell from the inside out. This is autolysis.

Interior of cell liquified is nutrient-rich. Surface of the skin becomes loose and sloughs off the body. The nutrient rich fluids give the body a moist appearance. This allows second major decomp stage to begin.

He is so good. Not boring to listen to, explains it so we can understand, but is not condescending at all!

It's really quite pathetic that Baez has to follow along on his phone via texts - from, I'm assuming LKB and others - in order to know when to object and what to say. CM is obviously just sitting there and not prompting him.

I guess that will thwart any "ineffective assistance of counsel" that they may whine about afterwards. Putrification is second stage... starts to liquefy.

Bloat stage: when microbes in intestinal tract start to increase in number because of all the nutrients being released from decomposing tissues. One of the byproducts (waste products) of bacterial metabolism is gas production. Ammonia, methane, etc.

Sometimes in death the body exits (colon, etc) get blocked and gasses can't escape and build up in abdomen, or wherever bacteria is present and exits are blocked. Eventually those gasses will find their way out.

Direct examination of Dr. Arpad Voss by JA.

He's a senior research scientist at Oakridge National Laboratory - been there almost 20 years. He then listed his education. His Ph.D. dissertation was developed around Dr. Bass's work at the Body Farm in the area of forensic anthropology - post mortem interval - determining how long someone has been dead. This was in the late 1980's.

The Oakridge facility - in the early eighties it was the only facility in the world where you could study a whole body decompositional event - 1.5 acres in size. Began in 1972. 1100 test subjects - bodies donated to science - left outside under various conditions - some in cars, some buried and some on the surface.

Post-mortem intervals - his initial research was looking at the chemical breakdown of soft tissue - analyzed decompositional fluid to determine how long an individual was dead.

4 stages of decomp - fresh, bloat, active decay and dry. Fresh stage - 2 processes - autolosys (self-digestion process) After sudden death, the cells don't realize the body is dead and they continue to metabolize - byproduct is carbon dioxide which builds up in the cells and is acidic.

JB objected and HHBP overruled.

Cells are breaking down and becoming acidic. Blisters occur and then skin slippage. One of the first visual signs that something is amiss. This gives the body a moisture laden appearance. This allows the second process of decomp - putrifaction - where microscopic organisms now feed on the nutrient rich fluid. The organisms can come from inside or outside the body. Decomposition is the liquification of the body.

Bloat stage - when micro organisms in the intestinal track produce gas.

Objection by JB - overruled.

When someone dies the rectal region and esophagus can become blocked. The gases then have no place to escape, so it builds up in the abdominal region, causing appearance of a bloated abdomen.

Final stage is active decay - the major 40 to 80% of the decomp process - liquification, leading to the dry stage - mummification and skelatinization.

Four processes that are important in the rate of decomp - temp most important, then presence of water, then ph, then the presence of oxygen.

Higher temp excelerates decomp.

His study looked at the liquids. Learned fat and muscle breaks down into volatile fatty acids. There was one publication on this - in that was the analysis of inorganic components. A variety of inorganic components could be used to determine how long a person has been dead. First paper was published in 1992.

First 10 years at Oakridge was looking at a variety of methods to look at volatile fatty acids.

He received his phD in 1991, then went to work at Oakridge.

The Oakridge National Lab is under the Dept of Energy, largest research laboratory. Roughly 4000 employees, guest researchers. Key areas of research which require multi-disciplanary teams looking at climate change, bio-fuels. (JA to witness - I think you just went past the "be brief" part.)

Right now the conversations, facial expressions and tossing about of files at the DT table is just coming off as EXTREMELY RUDE! The jury will see this.

Where are you seeing this? WESH is just showing ICA statue.

#CaseyAnthony Vass says they would bury bodies, install piping system around them, monitored which chemicals migrated upward

I wonder why Baez is talking so animatedly this morning instead of listening to Vass??? He doesn't even appear to be listening to see what he is up against. Its like he has his shoddy questions already to go to Vass. I think he is trying to get the jury to look at him instead of Dr. Vass.

Dr.V: buried bodies and put pipes in various places around the body to the surface. Allowed for the development of instrumentation to detect the variuos compounds that came to the surface. (I'm paraphrasing here)
