View Full Version : Dr. Gary Utz testimony (Medical Examiner)
06-09-2011, 03:24 PM
ICA's face is now buried in her sleeve/garment...
Dr. Utz is talking about the condition of the skull. Hair is extending on top of the skull. Mentions the duct tape. Referring to photo: this is the skull again. And it pictures acurately what it shows. What is flowing down on the skull are strands of hair. The hair mat can be seen on the photo. Another photo of the skull from the side and it is acurately portrayed. Now we are looking at the right side and back of the skull. Can clearly see the hair and the TAPE. The tape appears to be almost covering the eye sockets.

Showing eye socket part of the skull with the tape right below the eyes.
Jim Lichtenstein twitter: "Worst picture yet... Most of skull with hair covering face below eyes, duct tape over mouth and hair."

"Tell the jury why it's unusual for the mandible to remain attached..."
06-09-2011, 03:31 PM
Mandible stays in place when moved. Unusual because normally when it reaches this stage of decomp, mandible won't be attached. Still attached because of hair mat and plant material.
06-09-2011, 03:32 PM
Tape was no longer adhesive, but there were parts that were attached to the hair and had also slightly attached to the mandible.
he thinks the fabric of the tape was stuck to the mandible, but not the "sticky part" of the tape.
06-09-2011, 03:32 PM
"The mandible is usually left behind; mandible is still attached due to hair mat and plant growth"
"The tape was no longer adhesive but there were still small portions of the hair attached to the tape and to the mandible itself"
"Part of the fabric of the tape was stuck to the mandible vs the adhesive of the tape"
"Roots had grown into and around the hair mat"
06-09-2011, 03:34 PM
"Once I removed the tape and teased apart the hair the mandible was easily removed"

#CaseyAnthony Clearest image yet showing how tape is adhering to jaw. Whiteness of remaining teeth is striking.
Next photo: the tape after it was separated from the remains. You can see it's wrapped in circular fashion #caseyanthony

Here we go. CM asking him what Forensic Pathologist means.
06-10-2011, 10:17 AM
CMason asked the doctor to tell what the meaning of forensic pathologist is...where is he going???
before the remains were found, you were already aware of the surrounding hoopla..he's trying to diminish the ME's office...what a waste and I'm thinking the jury will not like it...
06-10-2011, 10:20 AM
Mason: There was no duct tape on the left side of the skull, was there?
I don't understand your question.

CM having witness explained closed reduction
witness: healing of bone
06-10-2011, 10:26 AM
CM has got hold of a few medical terms that he really doesn't understand, that is why Dr Utz is puzzled when he asks him if he saw evidence of a closed reduction... say whaaaat?
A closed reduction is a maneuver done to correct the deformity of a fracture, without Surgery to the bone...
06-10-2011, 10:26 AM
CM asking about the clothes do you remember the size of the shorts
UTZ: I believe 24 months
06-10-2011, 10:28 AM

Now talking about the mandible

CM: you do not know the cause and manner of cause of death in this case do you
UTZ: I did not have that responsibility to determine that sir
CM: my question was very specific, repeats question
UTZ: I did not

Photo of shorts with holes and tears - can't rule out the defects were there before but they appear to be consistent with decomposition, upclose pic of tag on shorts - Circo brand, pic of 2nd tag on shorts - (DS is moving closer to kc to put arm around her shoulders - kc head down eyes closed - hand to mouth)
Some letters were found @ the scene appear to be from a shirt....letters BIG Trouble comes small....publish - split screen with the letters and photo of little Caylee wearing the same shirt.....the letters appear to be identical.
single screen next exhibit - remnants of a shirt brought in - looks like the collar with a tag attached and some material - the remnants appear black. Photo of the tag - size 3T on the tag...
photo of a blanket and a piece of fabric from the scene...publish
(kc looks up - as the pics are over) .....he had some limited involvement with Dr. G on the following Monday and 2 visits to recovery scene....after that it was Dr. G's case - she returned Friday afternoon .... the 11th was a Thursday - she was back next day...
no further questions - cross
Board Cert ME? Forensic Pathologist....pathology means study of disease...a Physician who commonly diagnose disease in tissues Forensic pathology looks @ cause and manner of death....Scientist? no not that word.....
Common discussion in your office about the Hoopla on this case.....media was clammoring around this case....yes but before remains found ME office is really a spectator......Chief Investigator Hanson got there before you - took pictures, made notes, came back to Utz - you in charge while Dr. G out of town......Dr. G returned and took over the case....important for her be involved - she had relationship with LE and others in the office.....Utz was new in office and didn't have those relationships established......media being involved Dr. G wanted to do it......not the reason for her to do it - she would have been involved at any rate .....done this in many other cases - not exact but similar.......saw the duct tape and look @ various pictures? yes....
No duct tape of the left side of the skull? what do you mean by on? duct tape adheared to hair mat on the right side.....there wasn't duct tape on left side? yes it was attached .....not around the skull on the back - did not encircle the skull...,.
there were points of adherance on the left side.....removed tape - cut it lose from hair....didn't examine the duct tape.....didn't swab for dna....wore protective gloves and suit.....evidence bag - sent FBI field agent.....no human tissue on the duct tape - nothing I could identify....preliminary exam - goal to provide material to FBI and provide duct tape for analysis.....in your exam - no evidence of trauma on remains - didn't see any.....portions of bone that were disrupted = he didn't analyse them......didn't see closed reduction of fracture? no = closed reduction is healing fracture - didn't see any prior fracture....during autopsy -did you reset the calvarium? I did not - cutting bone and removing the top of the skull.....(kc appear to be illl) if body found before you would have more available than you did? possible.....
kc holding a tissue over he mouth and nose
what size shorts were? 24 month - I believe....involved in any decisions to seek further expert exam of the remains? Dr. Schultz is a forensic anthropoligist PhD....
did not sign the autopsy report w/Dr. G.....Dr goldberger in connection with this case? I did not....
location of the mandible - pictures of bottom jaw....held in place by the hair and roots as shown in photos....didn't come off while being moved around during exams...
determine cause and manner of death....ME's job primarily....do not know from your exam of the evidence - he didn't make the determination in this case....Do Not know cause of death? no do not...manner of death determined by dr. G a homicide.....is homicide a scientific term? (object -sustained) have not rendered an opinion as to manner of death in this case....CM talks to JB.....no more questions.
published SA #218 - CF for identification (kc- looks away and down)...which side of head or face is this? that is the left side.....publish 220 CU in evidence....what side is circled right side......tape on both the left and right side is shown....
