That river is VERY close. :(

Question... why is a 7 year old child with autism out walking the dog, alone, in a neighborhood you've been in for only a few days?!?

That was my first question as well swmnbn . My son he is autistic, we have lived in the home I am in now for 8 years (he is 11), I have a huge canal behind my home, along with a huge river across the street, he is never let alone outside ever, even in our fenced yard. For that matter none of my kids are allowed outside without supervision.

I pray they find him alive and well, that river, creek is a huge concern for me, children in general love the water. Prayers ! My heart aches for his family right now.

The first thing that popped in my mind was that he fell in the river and his dog tried to help him :(

This little boy being missing makes me sad for so many reasons. (Aside from the obvious that an innocent child is missing!)

I work with children who have special needs and several are autistic. And several of those - all of whom are more verbal than John David apparently is - wear special GPS devices either on a belt on pants or laced through tennis shoes if a girl is wearing a skirt or dress that doesn't allow for a belt.

With some autistic kids having tendencies to be 'runners' or at least 'wanderers' and others who just, like it said about John David, might be prone to hide from (especially unknown) people looking for them, it's been a precaution many of these families have taken.

But one of the unique features about them is that through some services you can also have them turned on to allow you to hear the surrounding sounds. So if it a parent looked at the child's location while they were at school and they seemed to be in an unexpected place, the parent could actually activate the device (I believe paying an extra amount to use that feature at the time) to hear what was going on, etc.

What a help that would be in a situation like this to be able to not only have some gps indication as to his location, but to also be able to hear if there are people around, meaning he's with someone or not.

This reminds me a bit of the little autistic girl who went missing in Florida sometime last year or so - who thankfully managed to survive. But this is far scarier given that he's non-verbal so couldn't apparently call for help, and also is an entirely foreign area with a dog who returned home wet.

Praying he's found quickly.

they are now saying he was not with the dog and they are certain he's not in the creek.

Police said they initially thought Burton was with a dog when he disappeared, but they now said that's not the case.

Bloodhounds were brought in to try and track Burton, but so far they have turned up empty handed.

Ed Napier with Buckeye Search and Rescue Dogs said, "You feel for these people. It's emotional in that sense, but we train very hard and we're trying to find a successful conclusion."

Sunday night investigators say Burton's scent stopped near a creek. But, officials say they are certain he's not in the water.

Chief Bryan Fields with the Aurora Police Department said, "Right now our investigation is mainly treating this as missing persons. But we'd be remiss if we didn't say we're not interested in an abduction scenario. But we don't have evidence that would support that at this point."

Must be why the FBI is involved, eh?

Something...okay a lot of things...aren't making sense here now.

Meant to add that they included no details, and additional reports are to follow at above link.

Only new information that I can find says that he was located early Monday morning. He was found in the creek.

Prayers for him and his family.

Better description of John:

Burton is 4 feet 10 inches tall and thin. He has a blonde Mohawk haircut and was last seen wearing only gray swim trunks, WCPO-TV reported.

ETA: Found deceased per previous comment. I suppose his description isn't important any longer. Very sad.

:(

Water is so attractive to our special kids, but they don't have the sense of danger or caution that comes instinctively to most people. My question is, was there a dog present or not? There's some confusion on that.

read the article i quoted just now again and now it says "nearly certain". maybe it was just a case of bad reporting.

The same link, above, is being updated as new news comes in. At the moment, it appears that it was an accident. John's body has been taken to the coroner's. Wildlife officers were those who found him. I can't imagine what the family is going through, especially having just moved in. I wonder why they seemed so certain in the beginning that he didn't go toward the creek, especially given early reports that the dog was wet. Again, my thoughts are with the family and those who searched.
