several other things pointed about about the 911 call. she was fading in and out like she was running around still cleaning the crime scene and i think that everyone agrees with that.
also, she mentions her finger prints will be on the knife because she picked it up. to me this is a la patsy ramsey and the ransom note that she was supposedly reading across the room and over john's shoulder and scott peterson asking for grief counseling the first night laci has "disappeared".
if my children laid there dying the last thing i would do would be pick up the frigging knife. i would be frantic to get 911 and IF i did move the knife i would not remember doing it, it would certainly be in a fog, but here she was reporting it to the 911 operator!!! even at that point her priorities were not with her children.....hum, wonder why. :waitasec:

My favorite part of the 911 tape is when she's questioned about it in open court. She actually tells the prosecutor and JURY that she never said she was "fighting," she wants them to believe she said she was "frightening." While I'm pretty sure that the one boy who actually saw who his murderer was throught she was pretty freaking "FRIGHTENING," I have some serious doubts that she said that to the 911 operator.

LOL, yeah, she's pretty frightening looking if you ask me. She actually says "fighting him" but she says it with that Texas accent "fightin im" like she says to the 911 operator "yes m" for "ma'am" several times.
Who spends all that time on a 911 call when your children are dying in front of you? And all that protesting "I don't even know who did it Darin" "we gotta find out who did this Darin." I hear guilt all over that call. She sounds more angry than shocked and confused to me anyway.
And she sets up it right away, imo. "someone came in, they've broken in" and not "send help, my children are dying"

I can't see it either. Even if the operator tells her to NOT hang up, well she's on a cordless phone, so there's nothing stopping her from attending to her sons' wounds while she holds the phone to her ear. Of course, we've had this conversation before. Try to hold the phone on one ear while you're holding a towel up to your own wounds and that doesn't leave any free hands to tend to your bleeding, dying children. Which, if you're the one who got them that way, works out just fine!!!

Yeah, LOL, how does it leave you free hands to wet towels. I don't know about you but those cordless phones are almost impossible to hold beneath the chin, I find anyway. Maybe my double, or triple chins are in the way, LOL.
anyway, you don't, you throw that phone and you hold and comfort your dying son to you. They would have had to pry him out of my arms.

That's as far as I have done with the 911 call that I can remember right off hand. I will have another listen and see what else I heard. I don't have a transcript made. I have it burned to a cd so it's a bit easier to hear. I know that Camilla has gone further so hopefully if she gets here she can add to mine.

I've read this through once before and I just skimmed it now. However, I just want to point out that Darlie does NOT volunteer the info about picking up the knife until the 911 operator tells her not to touch it. She says there is a knife to the police when they arrive. Then the 911 operator says "There's a knife? Don't touch it." THEN Darlie says "But I already picked it up." Or something to this effect.

I've never understood why this is pointed out by supporters as Darlie being prompted by the 911 operator. Are you saying the operator put words in her mouth. I just don't understand how and why this matters as regards Darlie's innocence or guilt. I'm dense I guess or maybe you can explain it to me. Darlie is the first one to mention the knife on the call, not the operator.
Yes, she says " I already touched it and picked it up." Later in ther call, she says "we could have gotten the prints, maybe." So Darlie was definitely aware of what story the knife might tell. MOO

This is the part I'm referring to. yes, Darlie brings up the knife. But the 911 operator then tells her not to touch anything. Then Darlie says I already touched it and picked it up. This is in response to the 911 operator telling her not to touch anything.
As I said, I've just skimed this and I don't think that this is the entire call.
I don't know that I'm saying anything different than you are saying, just that I am interpreting it diferently. Where is the part about the fingerprints? I seem to have missed that part. I need to read it again to see what you are talking about Cami.

Yes, okay but how are you interpreting it is what I want to know. I am not trying to be difficult, I just have a problem with reasoning power sometimes so I have to have things explained to me, LOL. I misunderstood, I thought you were somehow attaching blame to the 911 operator for Darlie's words. I see nothing sinister in this and I wonder how much weight the jury gave it because when you look at the whole picture, it's pretty low on the totem pole as evidence against Darlie, imoo.
Here's the transcript where she refers to the prints.
05:00:22 Darlie Routier ...what ...what...
05:01:15 911 Operator #1 ...need to let the police officers in the front door...
05:04:21 Darlie Routier ...(unintelligible) his knife was lying over there and I already picked it up...
05:08:19 911 Operator #1 ...ok ...it's alright ...it's ok...
05:09:20 Darlie Routier ...God ...I bet if we could have gotten the prints maybe ...maybe...
05:13:18 Police Officer ...(unintelligible)...
Little did Darlie know that the knife handle was not conducive for prints.

Okay, I think I see the problem. No, I was not attaching blame to the 911 operator for Darlie's words. I was saying that it is possible that Darlie would not have said anything about picking up the knife if the 911 operator had not just told her not to pick it up.
As for the part about prints on the knife, it is the sort of thing I would think of. But then, I'm obsessed with this sort of thing. I'm not a "typical suburban housewife". Having, Thank God, never been in a situation such as this or even remotely close (I've never had to dial 911 for any reason), I can't say how I would react. I don't know what would be going through my mind or what would pop out of my mouth. I do know that I have been known to say some pretty dumb things on occasion that I later thought about how it must have been taken by the person to whom I was speaking and wished I'd never said it.
Anyhow, back to darlie. It seems to me that one major issue occurring to her during the call to 911 was "WHO" was responsible. She is saying over and over that she doesn't know who do did it, she wants to find out who did it. Now this may be because she was laying the seeds of suspicion on the non-existent intruder. But it could also be because that was truly what she was thinking about at the time. Darin was caring for the boys. She called for help and was standing there bleeding and in shock (if she is a victim, I'm assuming she was suffering from shock after the attack on her children and herself). It is possible, IMO, that she got stuck on that one thought, "who did this, we've got to find him and punish him" and couldn't think about anything else.
Other people have said that the fact that she was not on the floor, holding her children is indicative of guilt or at least of a lack of emotion to them being dead. That if this had been them, the paramedics would have had to pry the child's lifeless body from their arms. I submit that unless you have been there, you don't know what you would have done. NO ONE can predict how they will truly act in a crisis unless you've prepared for that crisis. Taht is why we have fire drills and such, so we know what to do in case of that emergency. But if you are prepared for your child to be murdered and make sure you act just like you think a grieving parent should, I think that that shows a lot more guilt than just acting naturally.
That last bit didn't make a whole lot of sense did it? Sorry about that, but I'm oging to let it stand just in case someone can decipher the point I was trying to make there.
PS. I'm enjoying these discussions everyone. I seem to be the only one on the side of innocence, so I can see I have my work cut out for me!!! But I love friendly arguments.

Okay now I see. It is the operator's job to advise her not to touch anything as it's a crime scene.
I enjoy the discussions too. When I first heard of this case, I too believed in Darlie's innocence but one thing struck me as odd and that was her story. It just didn't make sense that a stranger would enter that home and brutally kill those two boys and not her. Once I started to learn more, though I had to find her guilty. All the evidence points to her.

What I find interesting about the 911 call is what she DOESN'T say:
She never says:
My throat is cut.
I'm bleeding.
My arms are hurt.
He tried to rape me (since her panties were "missing").
I love you (to the kid who was still alive).

Actually, in her FIRST sentence to 911 she referenced "singular" and "plural"-I find this a common speech pattern when people talk about unknown person(s)-I don't believe this means anything.
I also find her comments, answers very common to other 911 tragedy phone calls that I've heard where the caller is innocent. I don't think the 911 call implicates her, if anything I think it goes the other way.

I can see that you and I are on the same page here. Being a mother of three myself, I can tell you that as long as I live no one will ever be able to convince me that if my children were lying dying in front of me that there's a chance in hell I'd just stand there and watch. HOW ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH DID SHE NOT HOLD THEM AND GIVE THEM A SLIVER OF COMFORT?????? She knew they were dying. We heard her say that on the 911 call. They were hurt, they were in shock. They saw their mother coming after them with that butcher knife. That thought makes my blood run cold. She had no tears for them that night, she had no tears for them during that farce she called a birthday party and I'll shed no tears for her when the State of Texas takes her life.

Here is my question..If either parent were involved in this why call for help why one of the children is still alive and could say who hurt him? I would think you would wait until you knew they were both dead before calling for help.

I don't know. And, if there wasn't a huge mountain of evidence that proved she did it, I'd say that it makes a difference. However, if you put that on one side and all of the evidence that points directly to her on the other side, it simply can't compare.

A couple of things could have occurred:
Darlie could have started to freak out that she had injured herself fairly badly when she saw the amount of blood she was losin. Whilst she was never in danger of bleeding out she might have panicked (notice on the 911 call she talks about feeling like she is dying etc) and so she called 911 before she wanted to.
Depending on Darins involvement he may have interrupted her before she was ready or perhaps she heard him moving about upstairs getting ready to come down and so she sprung into action
Or, she may have in fact thought Damon was dead. There is no indication that he moved at all once he got to where he was found. He was on his stomach so she wouldn't see his chest moving or his eyes moving around. And in fact some people hold that Darlie only realises he is actually alive when she is on the 911 call (see if you can pick the part).
One thing to consider is that Dianne Downs, who shot her three kids in her car late one night, drove to the hospital with them and arrived with two of them still alive (thank God they both survived). So it is certainly not unheard of or unprecedented.

Damon also died in the ambulance in front of the house - NOT at the hospital or even on the way to the hospital. Since he could only live for a finite amount of time after the attack, this gives Darlie a little more time to do the staging.

The dog barked at the Police and ambulance attendants, but was completly silent when a "total" stranger entered the house and viciously attacked two sleeping boys.
Yeah, right.
Darlie slept through the attacks of her two children a mere metre from where she slept, but she could not sleep in the same room as baby Drake because when he turned over in his crib, he woke her.
Notwithstanding all of the other evidence against her......
The screen, the knife, the lack of blood trail, no motive, no robbery, mother lives and children die, the glass, vacuum cleaner, the lack of ANY emotion upon seeing her dead child in the hospital.
Darlie is guilty, no doubt in my mind, never was, never will be.

I don't know anything about this case at all. I just listened to the 911 tape and my first impression is this.
I don't feel any real emotion here, what I feel is more like an actress doing a bad job and sounding hysterical. I say this because you hear alot of screaming but it isn't gut wrenching screaming to me, you can't understand much, but when she is asked a question she is coherent enough to hear it. Ive seen true hysterics without the stabbings etc... and you can't get them to hear you when they are like that. I find it odd she hears the dispatcher enough to answer questions in between her screaming.
When I heard her say about touching the knife and something about fingerprints I quit listening. I don't believe anyone in true hysterics would have the clarity of mind to even know what they had just done. I don't think they would be so worried about whether they touched anything at that point as they should be more worried about if the children will survive.
What a hideous crime.

Hi :)
I've listened to that tape till I am blue in the face but what I found very interesting was the other day I was in my room and my sister (who I just got hooked on the case!) was playing the call on the computer in another room. She had it up really loud and it was the first time I was listening to it without really TRYING to listen to it and I have to say I was quite stunned at the way Darlie's tone and voice changed throughout the call. She went from screaming and sobbing to (as you said) being quite coherent, and at times sounding a bit absent-minded and distracted (and annoyed at being interrupted from whatever she was doing/looking at) to then being really snappy (especially when she yells at Darin towards the end).

I will say one thing - she didn't say "frightening."

Hi
Your brave to listen to it so many times yikes. I don't know I would listen to it again. I just don't get that feeling that she is just learning this took place somehow, her screaming seems over exagerated to me, and is missing the real emotion of just discovering something so horrific if you know what I mean. It sounds hollow to me almost and so quickly she can go from screaming as you said to coherency. It almost sounds like she is just filling time with screams to avoid talking but hears the questions to answer.

I'm going to take some liberities with the 911 transcript and post what I and others have heard.
0:11:12 FC: ...my little boy is dying...Darlie actually says " someone" not "my little boy is dying"
00:30:12 MC: ...(unintelligible)...--Darlie actually says "they're dead"? She says it in a very high voice and questioning, imo
00:35:20 FC: ...(unintelligible) thought he was dead...oh my God...Darlie actually says "he's seven year's old and he's dead"... oh my God
00:39:29 FC: ...I don't even know (unintelligible)..."who did it Darin"

01:24:20 FC: ...Darin...I don't know who it was...
01:24:2 COl: ...2:33 code...
Right after this "what, what, what, Darlie says Damon, Damon, Damon. On the second Damon, her voices is short, curt and sounds angry. I think but have been unable to confirm it that she tells Darin that Damon is still alive or is still breathing.
That's as far as I have done with the 911 call that I can remember right off hand. I will have another listen and see what else I heard. I don't have a transcript made. I have it burned to a cd so it's a bit easier to hear. I know that Camilla has gone further so hopefully if she gets here she can add to mine. I'm confused....not a surprise really, but are you filling in the (unintelligibles) or hearing something else completely? The part where the transcript has her asking about somebody still breathing and are they still laying there and I thought he was dead are very important statements against her. Are you hearing something else less damning? Please explain what you are doing :waitasec:

You're right Dani T! You said in your "Bruises and Other Myths" thread that the people on the Leeza Show do not respond to various screams and name-calling. I believe it is in "Part 1" and one of the very first things Darin says is "she(Darlie) never said anything about her wounds or pain, all she was concerned about was the boys". This is not a direct quote. I couldn't listen to it again because my family came home and caught me screaming at the computer. However its close enough to what he said, and its a flat out lie! Did he forget the 911 tape was played at the trial and is available on various Pro-Darlie web sites????

I caught that the other day, too, when re-watching that show. Still haven't seen it all though. Will have to go back another day and do it again.
It always seemed odd and out of place to me anyway that Darlie would tell him about her neck in a moment of hysteria over her boys. Another thing I found odd is that she never says she went to Devon but somehow she knew that the boy was fatally wounded. If you looked across the room and saw blood on or around your child, would you not run right to him? Or would you run to the stairs and holler at you husband first, then show him your neck wound you'd only just discovered was there, all the while screaming your child's name over and over again? Why did she not want the police to think she had gone near Devon that night? Why was Devon the only child that Darin wanted police to think he'd gone near? It almost looks like they had designated posts.

That's as far as I have done with the 911 call that I can remember right off hand. I will have another listen and see what else I heard. I don't have a transcript made. I have it burned to a cd so it's a bit easier to hear. I know that Camilla has gone further so hopefully if she gets here she can add to mine. Ok cami said she was going on vacation so I guess she didn't have time to answer me. What is she doing here? Hearing something different or filling in blanks? Does she think Darlie didn't ask about somebody breathing and saying something like I thought he was dead? This is driving me nuts. Please help :banghead:

A bit of both I would say.
We've all at some point gone through the call and written down what we hear. I did it in great detail about a year ago myself but even just a cursory few listens to it will open up some doors if you are willing to listen :) Have you tried it? Should give it a go...

Yes, I am hearing something different than what the transcript says.
For instance right here:
00:09:24 COl: ...who...who did...
Right after the operators says "who, who did" Darlie replies "someone"
And right here:
00:29:13 FC: ...oh my God...my babies are dying...
00:30:12 MC: ...(unintelligible)...--Darlie actually says "they're dead"? She says it in a very high voice and questioning, imo
Where the transcript says "unintelligible" I hear Darlie say "they're dead" in the form of a question and her voice is very high. Darin obviously said something to her in response to her saying "my babies are dying" to the operator.
00:35:20 FC: ...(unintelligible) thought he was dead...oh my God...
I hear Darlie say right here "Devon OR he's only seven years old and he's dead, oh my God."
00:39:29 FC: ...I don't even know (unintelligible)
I hear Darlie say "I don't even know who did it Darin" She says that several times.
01:41:21 FC: ...what...what...what...
Right after this "what, what, what, Darlie says "Damon, Damon, Damon". On the second Damon, her voices is short, curt and sounds angry. I think but have been unable to confirm it that she tells Darin that Damon is still alive or is still breathing.
I can't get over the fact that she stayed on this call so long while her two precious boys are dead and dying in front of her. Wouldn't you just scream "send help" then go comfort your dying children. They would have had to pry Damon out of my arms.

I'm a lot more interested in this part:
0:39:29 FC: ...I don't even know (unintelligible)..."who did it Darin"
Why would Darlie think Darin had any idea who'd done this? The thing that I've always noticed about the call is that Darlie is extremely angry at Darin, like she's accusing him, but accusing him of what?
It almost feels like she's angry with him because she thinks he's involved somehow, as if she thinks whoever was there came there because of Darin and stabbed the kids because of something Darin had been involved in.
Or, as I believe, that she was considering the very real possibility that Darin was the one who had attacked her, and that someone was killing the kids while he cut her up. Remember her description: tall, long hair, black cap, jeans. That describes Darin.

Ok thank you. I don't know why that was driving me nuts, but it was. I just think the part about "who was breathing" or something like that is important in showing her guilt and the "still laying there" is too. Isn't it?
But, you're hearing something else. Not that I doubt you or anything, but didn't Darlie agree to everything in the transcript except for the "frightening/fighting" thing? Should I listen to the tape without reading the transcript?

Yes, but she knows she is being taped. She is performing for the dispatcher and the police. I don't expect many clues in that tape unless she really did discover Damon still alive while on the phone. Then she might have blurted something that turned out to be inaudible.

Once again, she is performing. In subtle ways they both point fingers at each other. I suspect that a lot of what they said and did was self serving on both their parts just in case. Better you than me, babe.

Yes, listen to the call without the transcript Ok, I did that, thanks. I downloaded it and played it on a loop several dozen times. LOL. In there somewhere I swear I can hear utensils clattering. My husband has put these giant speakers and sound card on our computer and it's so clear. By the way, I think men feel that the size of their speakers reflects their penis size, but that's just my :twocents:
I need to listen to the tape and see if I hear that sound again. I only heard it once. I get sick of listening to it after awhile. That whiny voice, sheese! I heard an ad for a security system today and it started out with "911, what is your emergency". It was funny, my stomach turned over then I realized thank goodness, it's not Darlie again. I need to take a break from the tape, don't ya think?

LOL, yeah I'd say so. I can't get over the whiny voice either. When you are playing that tape do you at any point hear Darin crying? I swear I heard it the last time they ran MDR on American Justice on Aande.

Also, the call from the outset is not made to get help but to set up her story.

You probably did, Cami. Karen Neal testified that when Darin came to their door he was screaming and crying, and tears were running down his face. That's just one of the many reasons why I believe Darin didn't have anything to do with the actual murders.
Did he lie his butt off after the fact to protect Darlie? You betcha!

No, you've interpretated that incorrectly. Darlie says, "I don't even know who did it Darin" as if she is trying to convince Darin she doesn't know, she's not asking him a question, she's telling him she doesn't know who did it. Then she gets hysterical screaming, "we've got to find out who did this" to Darin while he is screaming at her to get some help.

Yes, listen to the call without the transcript Yesterday I listened to the tape again. I wasn't reading the transcript or watching the mins which I normally do so I know when to pay attention to certain things. Since I wasn't watching, I had no idea when the "Karen/Darin" would be. When I heard her say it, only half listening, there was no question to my ears that she's screaming Darin. For a second I didn't even realize that was the spot. And you know we said calling for Karen really makes no sense. Karen wouldn't have been able to hear her unless Darlie was standing on the Neal's front porch.

I pictured the scream for Karen to be while Darin was across the street getting her. I would love to know whose blood is on the front door - anyone know? Also, the velocity drop near the front door, whose blood was that?

Also, the velocity drop near the front door, whose blood was that? No, according to both Darin and Darlie, Darin did not leave the house until the officer saw him running either out the front door or from that area, which is more than 3 mins into the call.
She screams "Karen/Darin" at about 2:40 mins into the 911 tape. They say Darin is inside the house then. He doesn't run over to the Neals until after the paramedics arrive, which is way after she screams "Karen/Darin." In fact, she's off the phone by then, about time. Hasn't Goody said the blood on the door is Darlie's?

The blood on the front door knob and floor is Darlie's, according to expert testimony as I recall.
