View Full Version : How to add a Signature Image Tutorial

Elf

Lots of people ask how to add images to their signature. I made a tutorial for this and it can be viewed here:

http://www.websleuths.com/signature_tutorial.htm

(don't mind the typos, I was rushing).

Hey Elf.. this would make a good sticky..

Also as a tip... your image needs to be hosted on the web... I use www.photobucket.com (http://www.photobucket.com) to store images. You can register for a free account and it is very simple to upload photos you save off the net.

Also ~ another tip, make sure in your User CP, Options area, you have enabled images to be displayed in your settings.

Great job with the tutorial, Elf! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_28_100.gif Cassie had already taught me how to do this, but I wanted to check out your image tutorial and I think you did a fabulous job! Kudos to you! http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_5_104.gif

ETA: I second the Sticky nomination! Often times new members want to know how to do this. Good idea, Cass!

This is the tutorial to add pictures to signatures, right. All I can see are the urls (I think that is the correct term), no images. Why is that? Help!

This may sound crazy, but I'm not using a computer, so I don't know if these images will work for you, but it's worth a try for those having trouble finding cute stuff :)

The neat thing is you don't need to have your own "server"----these are free to use.
good luck--hope it helps

Hi there.. I use Adobe - but a realy rally old version 2.0 I think!

LOL I have all the other ones... but I am happy with my old one.

Basically you start the program. then look for something like "get photo" where you can pull the image from your hard drive.... then look for 'edit' or 'crop' or 'resize' something like that.

I bet there is a help tutorial if you click it - it will let you search for what you are wanting to do and give instructions.... sorry I can't be of more help, you just have to play with it till you get the hang of it.

Good Luck!!

I just don't know enough about computers to know how to do it! I have been trying... but can't. Would it be possible for someone to do it for me? Sorry for sounding so dumb! I tried to get my daughter to help me but she keeps saying she will and never has the time. She's 18 if that tells you anything. How to add a signature image that is....

Heya Cass!
My Microsoft Picture It is ancient as well, but ya know you sortof grow to know a program so well and eventually it's hard to abandon. My little sock monkey picture was edited with MSPI.
My solution ended up being to change the photo in Photobucket. It allowed me to reduce my photo by 75/50/25%.
Thanks for all your help.
Golfmom!
GolfMom, I started with Picture-It, it's primitive compared to Photoshop. Photoshop is the "Gold Standard" for photo editing. It's worth taking the time to learn. In Photoshop, first look at your Image size under the Image dropdown menu and make it as small as you can(you only need 72dpi resolution for the web), then under the File dropdown menu, find "Save for the Web" and you can further optimize the size of it- use 4-up so you can compare which .jpg looks best without overoptimizing it. You want it to try to load in about 10 sec on a 28.8 computer, that's generally where you get the best optimization.

[QUOTE=LinasK]Good job, Tamid, you succeeded in posting a picture, now maybe you can work on sizing it a little bit smaller...[/QUOTE

Thank you... I know and I have been trying to figure out how! I will though just give me time. :p
If you have Photoshop, read my post #31 in this thread, I tried to explain how to do it there...

Does anyone know how to make the picture smaller? I saw a box around the picture that I tried to manipulate. It would move the picture around but the changes were never able to be saved. I like my picture I just want to scale down the top, where there is too much of the wall in the background.

Did you try opening the picture in your image editor program, choose crop or resize, then resave the cropped image. Upload the cropped image into your image host and then change in the signature section here on WS?

No, I haven't tried that yet. I don't really have an online page for pictures. I guess I could create one, but that was going to be my last resort.

My signature has a link to a free image hosting site you can use to host your signature picture(s). Just make sure to credit them, it's their policy. (Choose "direct link" as the URL to copy and paste in.)

Ca-Sun

I missed all that:)LOL! OK, here it is again, Dingo

Here is a quick step by step instruction guide:

User (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/usercp.php?) (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/usercp.php?)CP (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/usercp.php?)

Edit (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/profile.php?do=editsignature) (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/profile.php?do=editsignature)Signature (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/profile.php?do=editsignature)

Go to Photobucket,

Copy IMG Code (3rd one under picture you want) -looks like you are pasting the URL Link - first one.

Paste in Signature Box

Click on Preview - your avatar should be there.

Click on Save

Like the Avarar???

help hes huge:confused:Looks like you aren't copying the correct link. Under the pic on Photobucket there are 3 choices. Copy the LAST (3rd) one then paste it in your siggy window. You can preview it there.

If you want to copy the first one, the URL Link, that will work, but you can't paste it directly in siggy box - you need to click on the the square, yellow icon with a little mountain in it - then paste the link in the dialogue box. Much easier to just copy the 3rd link and paste it directly. 3rd link is Img Code.

Copy the image URL, and use the "insert image option" to put the image in, then type out the words that are supposed to show, then copy the link that should be there, (in this case the second thing is the image URL, and the first is the link URL) and put it into the word(s) it should be in, and it will display properly. Er, that's how I do it anyway.

Do you see the little icon that looks like a yellow postage stamp with a circle and 2 triangles on it? (I think it looks like mountains and the sun, myself.) It is on the same line as the Bold Italics and Underline options, the third icon from the right, directly below the "redo" icon. Click that, and put in *ONLY* the image URL to insert an image into your signature or a post. You don't need any other code but the URL. If you need to host your image online, ImageShack is a good place to go. They give a direct link to the image, and they don't seem to run out of bandwidth as I have seen other image hosting sites do. You can find a link to ImageShack in my signature.

KatK

It previewed ok? Odd... Did you accidentally delete the image somehow maybe? You have the image you want on your hard-drive? Read to upload to an image hosting site that allows you to take a direct link and put it on other sites? (Like ImageShack etc.) What I mean is, many sites won't let you "hotlink (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotlink)" because it steals their bandwidth. That's one of the things I could maybe think of that would do that, if you thought you had a site that would let you use their image elsewhere, but you didn't? It took me a bit to figure out how to upload images and put them in places too. Keep fiddling with it, you'll catch on.

Hi Kat, I have just registered with ImageShack and am awaiting their email to confirm my application. I don't know how long it will take...guess I will go and prepare dinner and maybe it will be with me on my return.:D

KatK

ImageShack allows you to take a direct link from an upload and use it on other sites, without regisering for an account. (Though having an account would be nice too, one place to go grab your pictures so you can link and share them.) I hope you got it working now.

AHA! Another thing that might be a problem, did you take out the extra http? Just copy your whole link right over the "http://" that comes up in the popup box for the image URL. I forget that myself sometimes. *THAT* might have been it!

Prickle
10-24-2007, 03:42 PM
Nope, they never got back to me to confirm my application (ImageShack), but as you mentioned it's possible upload without being a member...it doesn't matter, thought I am somewhat puzzled  why they didn't.

Are you outside the United States? I think they have seperate sections for people who don't live in the United States. Er, surely they'd have that on an FAQ or sitemap somewhere. Seems to me I read so some time ago, but I couldn't lay hands on the other site's URLs quickly. *wry*

ETA: Er, maybe not. I was sure I'd read when they began offering memberships that it was only for people in the US. Maybe they have since changed their minds though? Dunno. Maybe they also just lallygag as far as sending out the e-mail? Are you sure you typed the e-mail correctly? I still put @yahoo (When I want to use my gmail account.) on some of my e-mail addresses... :blushing:

I see the problem! This isn't the code you need at all!

[IMGhttp://www.swapmeetdave.com/Humor/Cats/Felix_thinking.gif[/IMG]

All you need to put into that yellow postage stamp is this:

http://www.swapmeetdave.com/Humor/Cats/Felix_thinking.gif

But, a far better link to use is this:

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/3591/felixthinkinggh2.gif

Just highlight the imageshack URL up there, press ctrl and c at the same time, and you can then paste the URL into the "insert image" popup box. I save the image to my hard-drive and uploaded it to ImageShack for you. ETA: Er, just click the imageshack link, then copy the URL from that page to put into the popup menu. Disregard the "ctrl + c" bit this time.

ETA2: Thank goodness you'd left your signature on long enough for me to spot that! ;)

No, we all have that. Here is a screenshot showing what you should see/do. The yellow icon on the second line above the signature/compose post area, past the icon to enter a link, the third icon from the right, is where you put in the URL/link for your image.

http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/146/editsigfm9.jpg

Copy the direct link from ImageShack, not any of the ones with code. No <img src=" , no [IMG], none of that. *Only* the link. See the image below? See what I highlighted at the very bottom of the page? That code-free URL option is what you copy for Websleuths. ;) :)

Go into your "User CP" and on the left hand side you'll see "Edit Signature" or something like that. You'll then see the box like you type in your response to a post. On the upper right corner of that area there is a box with 2 "A"s in it... click that and you'll see the "links" instead of the picture(s).

Each picture has an "address" of where your pic is stored. The address would be something like: "http://sitenname/picname.gif" - Change the address to reflect whichever pic you want. To view what it'll look like, click that box with the "A"s again...

I hope I didn't confuse you too bad!

Are the numerous pics going to take up too much bandwidth? or are there not enough members (yet)? Another board I'm a member on had to restrict them.

Plus, some people have VERY large pics and takes some scrolling just to get to the next message... and to be honest, this gets old fast when the same person posts over & over and the photo/msg has NOTHING to do with anyone missing...

Large or numerous sig pics are my pet peeve too... I hate having to scroll past overly large or multi tags just to get to the next post. But, we cannot dictate the size or count as lowly peons... only the mods can. So, we're stuck until if or when limits are placed on sigs.

I don't always put up my signature, I tried grouping most of the images side by side, but that took up more space than the way it is now. :truce: I'm sorry if I annoyed anyone, that isn't why my signature is this way.

Hello j2mirish. To get an image to show in your sig or a post click on the little square yellow icon on the posting bar. It looks like two triangles or mountains against the yellow background. (3rd icon from the end on the posting bar.)

This should give you a popup into which you paste your image url. Links to images should end in .jpg , .gif , .bmp or .png to show up, example wwwDOTsomewhereDOTcom/myimage.jpg.

Hope that helps.

I think Big Tex posted somewhere siggies were ok now, but to keep them small. I'm sure a mod can help you! :blowkiss:

Thanks, Aimee, but after I go to "edit details" I don't see "custom user title...?" Did I miss a step?
Thanks!

That area is in three "boxes" on the right side of the page. "Custom User Title" is in the second box down... in the "Optional Information - All information will be viewable by other forum members."

Hmmm...I don't have any 3 boxes or anything that says "Custom user title." Maybe because I'm new...? Oh well, thanks anyway!

Could someone let me know if they see an avatar and if so what it is?

I have tried to change my avatar several times.

Whenever I go to User CP I see the avatar that is supposed to be there, but when I post I see the first avatar I ever used, which I have deleted.

I am pretty familiar with forums software & images and I've also cleaned my
cache etc. to no avail. This happens on my work computer & my laptop at
home..

I can't see "custom user title" either, do you have to have a certain amount of posts to use it?
:)

Yes, you need to have at least 50 posts in order to do the "fancy" stuff around here... go post in the game room... you'll get 50 in a hurry! LOL!

The currency used when reporting PPP data is the "international dollar". Is that the same as the US Dollar, if not, how is it calculated.

The reason I ask is, for the GDP per capita PPP I need to convert those figures into Euros and I am uncertain if its simply a question of adjusting by the euro/dollar exchange rate or not?

Thanks.

Can someone tell me what I'm obviously missing? I'm trying to add a picture and a few words to my sig. I tried the Upload a picture for your sig feature, I've tried the photobucket link feature, and everything else I can try. The sig preview shows the sig just fine, but it will NOT show up in the forum. I have show pics and sigs and all that checked in the options, also. I see everyone elses, but not mine. Help please.

Ok, now I feel totally stupid, it just showed up without me doing anything else.

How can I add another pic to my signature? It keeps deleting the one I already have to add the new one. Thanks!

As far as I can see you can only have 1 pic in your sig, so when you are trying to add the second it is deleting the first.

Yeah, that's the problem. Can I put 2 pics up? I've done it before, but it's been a while so I forgot how. :dunno:

Yes two pics can be put into the signature... Here is an example in my siggie... I uploaded pics from my computer into my photobucket account and copied the img tags side by side.
