Attorneys representing Casey Anthony invoked her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination 60 times during a deposition given in a civil suit against her, according to a transcript of the proceedings.

Asked why he was invoking Anthony's right against self-incrimination, Greene said, according to the transcript, "I need not explain our factual basis other than to tell you that it could tend to incriminate and provide a link in the chain of evidence that could be used against (Anthony)."

• If there's anything I've learned from my time answering the phones here at the Sentinel, it's that the Casey Anthony trial will never quite be over for some.

Those folks are in luck: Former assistant state attorney Jeff Ashton will be promoting his new book Imperfect Justice: Prosecuting Casey Anthony at the Orlando Public Library (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/arts-culture/libraries/orlando-public-library-PLCUL000209.topic) this month.

During the appearance, scheduled for 6 p.m. Nov. 21, Ashton will be discussing his role in the case and its effects on the justice system in general, and participating in what's likely to be a spirited Q&A afterward. The book is available Nov. 15.

Most of the resignation letters from this group — which represents 12 percent of the Orange and Osceola circuit's 65 judicial slots — are generally worded and do not give specific reasons for leaving.
But Chief Judge Belvin Perry attributes the departures, at least in part, to increasing caseloads, dwindling court resources, lack of judicial pay raises for several years and statewide policies that have effectively reduced take-home pay for judges.
"You've seen people gradually grow weary," Perry said. "They burn out and see no end in sight."

"The opening statement defense attorney José Baez delivered during Casey Anthony's criminal trial continues to shadow the lawyer and haunt his client.

Lawyers attending a recent Orange County Bar Association forum titled "Lessons in Ethics & Professionalism From the Casey Anthony Trial" asked pointed questions about the controversial opening.

Two civil lawsuits filed against 25-year-old Anthony, meanwhile, ask whether she allowed untruths to be presented on her behalf and whether Baez gave false statements in his opening to the jury, court filings show......"

But what we haven't heard is what Ashton calls the much more alarming allegation he said she created around that lie -- that George had deliberately drowned Caylee while he was molesting her in the backyard pool.

Ashton went on to write, “Casey believed that her father drowned Caylee deliberately or drowned her while he was molesting her, even though she had no evidence that George had ever molested Caylee in the past," and even though shortly after her arrest, she told Dr. Danziger that she had never been sexually abused, Ashton wrote.

Tuesday, Linda Kenney-Baden, a member of Casey Anthony's defense team for some time, offered reaction to the comments Jeff Ashton made in his book about her. In a post on twitter, Kenney-Baden said:

Jeff Ashton's comments about me show that opposing attorneys can have a respectful working relationship. I wish Jeff Ashton well in his new endeavor."

George and Cindy Anthony read Jeff Ashton's new book

Lippman said George and Cindy Anthony don't begrudge Ashton for writing the book. They said don't have a problem with it, and that Ashton is entitled to his opinions.

If the Anthonys see anything incorrect, Lippman said they will come out and correct it.

As for their communication with Casey, who remains on probation in an unknown location, Lippman said there has been none. Zero.

Lippman said he's been told Casey wants nothing to do with her father, and she has not spoken with either George or Cindy since her release from jail in July.

Police coordination, media, Internet help locate abducted children

Missing child cases have evolved from photos on milk cartons to a more instant, sprawling and connected web of information that increases the likelihood of finding children alive.
Authorities credit greater success to a more immediate police response, increased community awareness and the ability of media outlets to get the word out.

At least 17 Facebook groups have sprouted to support Jhessye's family and distribute fliers with photos of the Glendale girl. Strangers stood on street corners waving signs with her picture.
On Web forums, some have questioned whether Jhessye really is missing, while others have passed along prayers or offered to pass out fliers.

Fell also explained how the opposing attorneys saw the marathon deposition. “Her attorneys said it was absurd and just an attempt to wear her down,” Fell said. “But Casey Anthony’s civil attorneys said it shows Gonzalez’s deception.”

News 13 aired footage of Gonzalez explaining that she left a cleaning job because she didn’t want to cause problems. “I didn’t say I was fired,” she said.

U.S. man leaves Aruba jail in missing tourist case

Gary Giordano left prison in an SUV with his lawyers, entering the vehicle behind a concrete wall so he was hidden from journalists waiting outside. He made no statements as he drove off, followed by a caravan of reporters, his immediate destination unclear. It was too late to catch a direct commercial flight back to the U.S.

A long-awaited evidentiary hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning in the case of veteran death row inmate Tommy Zeigler.

Supporters of the man convicted of killing his family and a customer inside his Winter Garden furniture store on Christmas Eve 1975 say this may be Zeigler's last chance to try to prove his innocence – something he has maintained all these years.
He and his attorneys want new DNA testing conducted on bloodstained evidence from the crime scene.

An earlier round of DNA testing failed to clear Zeigler. Seven years ago this month, Zeigler's legal team and now retired prosecutor Jeff Ashton argued about DNA findings that showed some blood evidence discovered on Zeigler's shirt was originally linked to the wrong victim.bbm

In the long saga of Casey Anthony, few reports have been as brutal, gossipy or jaw-dropping as one tonight from Central Florida News 13. Can you say wow? Of course not, if your jaw is on the floor.
Anthony’s civil attorneys ripped into Zenaida Gonzalez, arguing that someone without a reputation can’t sue for defamation.

Anthony’s attorneys also plan to draw on photos from Gonzalez’s MySpace page, Fell reported. “We’re told those pictures are suggestive and show a half-naked Gonzalez,” Fell said. “They’ve since been removed, and Greene wouldn’t share them with us.”
The report’s revelation: Anthony’s attorneys play hardball. They took a bat to Gonzalez on News 13. How will Gonzalez and her team fight back?

During a recent deposition, Anthony declined to answer many questions by asserting her 5th Amendment rights. Fernandez-Gonzalez's attorneys have filed a motion to compel her to answer.

"I think the comment he made about there being an FBI report about mine and Robyn's relationship was just to scare me. Why would that have any bearing on what happened down there? It’s disgusting that he would even try to do something like that."

In the controversial interview with Geraldo Rivera, Giordano described himself as Robyn's "protector," and told the host that it was "accurate" to say she was promiscuous.

In a live interview, Gardner boyfriend Richard Forester called Giordano “a selfish coward.” He also dismissed the idea that Gardner would go into the water, saying she had hair extensions and feared the ocean.
Then Baez called in to answer Forester and warn that he was “dangerously close to defmation.” Baez also threatened to release an FBI report on the Gardner-Forester relationship.
This should be Forester’s last interview, Baez warned.

Baez would do better to tell Giordano that. Was Baez, with his threats, trying to take the attention off what Forester was saying? Forester had some interesting questions: Why did Giordano wear tennis shoes into the ocean? Why did Giordano have his three sons along for the interview?

"......There's plenty of fodder going on and plenty of nonsense and stories ... but there's absolutely nothing that indicates that Gary is guilty of anything," Giordano's attorney, Jose Baez, said today.

Defense may seek closed record presentation outside the public eye

The legal teams are scheduled to argue the issue of whether Anthony should be made to fully answer questions during a deposition. Thursday's hearing is part of the civil defamation lawsuit Gonzalez filed against Anthony.

"All of the questions posed by [Gonzalez] required some form or response that might possibly be incriminating or otherwise provide a link in the chain of evidence related to the criminal convictions currently on appeal, or other charges that might be brought," Greene wrote.

On another Casey Anthony front, the state Justice Administrative Commission confirmed that Anthony's criminal defense team billed the state $219,693.81 since she was declared indigent in March 2010. Of that amount, the state has paid $176,255.58 for her criminal defense, according to the JAC numbers.

For all of the high-minded grandeur placed on the majesty of the American legal system most people would be quite happy to never enter a courtroom, but television ratings -- demonstrated in the Casey Anthony and Conrad Murray trials -- clearly show broad interest in watching what happens inside the four walls of a trial court.
Notable cases have always generated attention from the public and in recent decades that has often included live televised or videotaped coverage from inside the courtroom. But until this summer none of those cases originated inside a federal trial court.
A new pilot program approved by the Judicial Conference, the policy making entity for the federal courts, allows for some cases to be videotaped and then posted online for all to see.

Munyon said a deposition in the civil suit would include questions that "bear directly" on one of the appealed counts. Anthony, the judge wrote, has "properly asserted" her rights.

Gonzalez's lawyers are free to revisit the issue after Anthony's appeal concludes.

The trial of Jodi Ann Arias, set to begin Feb. 1, could be the biggest court proceeding since Casey Anthony.

The 32-year-old photographer is accused of shooting her lover in the face, stabbing him 27 times, and slitting his throat from ear to ear.

The dead man, Travis Alexander, was found in the shower of his Mesa., Ariz., apartment five days later.

CNN and TruTV have both been gearing up for major coverage. Even Dr. Drew Pinsky has chimed in, recently comparing Arias to Casey Anthony.

Why does the Casey Anthony case continue to generate such interest?
We keep writing about it, because the case keeps producing stories. A prediction: You’ll hear a lot more in 2012.

But Casey Anthony isn’t saying a lot, evidently, unless she is paid. How valuable would her latest take be? Her version of events has gone through striking revisions. As Judge Stan Strickland so memorably said, “The truth and Miss Anthony are strangers.”
We can also add that responsibility and Miss Anthony are strangers. She doesn’t take responsibility, unless forced to. Remember her apology to Amy Huizenga for writing bad checks?
So what would be the point of interviewing Casey Anthony, who was convicted of lying to law enforcement? And wouldn’t she lose her mystery if she started talking?
The Caylee side of the story, however, endures. She was discarded, but she’ll never be forgotten.

In a TLC special tonight, Dr. Jan Garavaglia blasted the defense’s criticism of her work in the Casey Anthony case.
Garavaglia, the chief medical examiner for Orange and Osceola counties, ripped Dr. Werner Spitz’s complaint that she had conducted a “shoddy” autopsy on toddler Caylee Anthony.
The special, “Dr. G: Inside the Caylee Anthony Case,” noted that the child’s skull fell apart when defense expert Spitz opened it.
“He broke it. He caused a fracture and it fell it apart, and then he has the nerve to call my work shoddy?” Garavaglia asked incredulously.

During the trial, defense attorney Jose Baez complained that Garavaglia’s conclusions were not science.

“The conclusions were scientifically defensible,” Garavaglia responded to Baez in the special. “That is not a principle that I make up. It’s not because this was a high-profile case that I wanted to do a thorough job. This was a 2-year-old little girl that was found in the woods.”

From Dr. Drew episode that aired last night, 01/03/12:

“The only thing I’m an expert on is how people react to death,” Garavaglia said. “I see every accidental death. I see every child that dies suddenly and unexpectedly, and I talk to the mothers. She did not respond like any mother I’ve ever talked to. In fact, if you’re saying this was an accident, it’s an insult to every mother whose child died accidentally. She acts … as if she’s guilty.”

J. Cheney Mason said the video's release was 'unauthorized' and Anthony didn't put it online

But in lieu of the video diary surfacing, Fernandez-Gonzalez's attorneys said Thursday they will renew their motion to have Anthony testify.

"This video is a preview of everything we predicted she would do in court — speak when it's for profit. She has gamed the system," said lawyer John Morgan.

"Justice moves slowly sometimes, but we remain vigilant. I guess her objection to filing her deposition with the court for safety concerns due to the disclosure of her appearance was a sham upon the court. I don't think this well-respected and thoughtful judge will be happy or amused."

Ablow puts in his two cents.

The YouTube video released by Casey Anthony gives me additional confidence that my insights into her, psychologically, have been accurate. Most notable about Ms. Anthony’s statements is the one in which she speaks of finally owning something she need not give back to anyone—a computer, a camera and a cell phone.

These, of course, were the treasured possessions through which she interacted with others before her murder trial. Casey Anthony used MySpace and Facebook as ways to present a false self—a synthesized, sterile “profile”—to her friends and lovers.

“Give up on selling your story,” he told me today. “No legitimate organization will come out for you to pay anything. She’s toxic.”

Politan predicts the public backlash against Anthony won’t die down, as evidenced by the reaction to an Anthony video diary that spread across the Internet on Thursday.

“We’re in a new era with social media. Word spreads quickly,” Politan says. “If there’s a rumor that a legitimate news organization will give Casey Antony 50 cents, they [viewers and readers] will be all over it. It’s not worth it. If she wants to tell her story, she’ll have to do it for free.”

"If you look at a typical narcissistic personality disorder, sometimes they will run into a very victim mentality so it's these things have happened to me, these things were taken away and they kind of hyper focus on themselves and what they've lost as opposed to what they attribute to their situation," said licensed mental health counselor Janie Lacy.

Dr. Walter Afield is a practicing psychiatrist in Tampa and has seen more than 20,000 patients in his 50-year career. To read more about him, visit his practice online.

Renowned Tampa psychiatrist Dr. Walter Afield, who is a body language expert, spoke to WTSP about the video, saying the “first thing he noticed is how vain” Casey is by “showcasing” her new short, blond hair and glasses.
“She very much cares about her appearance. There's the second push-back [of the hair],” he said.
Afield also surmised that Casey is “trying to act seductive,” but is in fact “lonely.”
He added, “Well, you could say that she's being protective or sexual. This is like the diary of a teenager. She's an airhead and a killer.”

01-07-2012, 06:51 PM

Casey also begins the new video with a higher pitched baby girl like voice which is very interesting on so many levels. In essence, the little girl voice may reflect how she feels about herself subconsciously, especially now that Caylee is no longer a part of her life. Now she can be the little girl- the youngest in the family like she has always been. Now she can resume her role as the baby girl- not Caylee.

I still believe that these tapes are being released because producer Scott Sternberg’s despicable efforts at selling an interview with Casey for 3/4 of a million dollars failed. So now Plan B is in place with the release of these tapes. The timing is uncanny, especially if Casey will be released from her facility next month.

In watching these tapes it was so upsetting to see how Casey was so focused on her new piercings and to hearing the word “excited” come out of her mouth. Poor Caylee may she rest in peace, will never have the chance to experience excitement about anything.

..............Although attorney Cheney Mason says Casey did not release the video and it was illegally obtained, many, including author Aphrodite Jones believes Casey likely “doctored” the video herself or with the help of someone else and probably released it due to her narcissistic tendencies.

As Jones astutely notes on her Discovery.com blog, “...let's recall the photos of Casey that appeared last fall – those were orchestrated – with careful placement of an Ohio ball cap on Casey's head and studious glasses that allowed people to recognize her eyes.”

Anthony's Video Diaries Prompt Law Firm To Take Action

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Some lawyers said Casey Anthony's recent videos will have them back in court.

Anthony's video diaries have caused Internet frenzy. Supporters said it's good to see that Anthony is moving on with her life, but protesters are fed up, saying it was just the attention Anthony is looking for.

Members of the Morgan and Morgan law firm want Anthony to come forward and speak up in their case because they said Anthony's new videos prove she is gaming the system for profit.

The video diary seen first on WESH 2 News has prompted the law firm to take action in defense of their client, Zenaida Gonzalez. Gonzalez's legal team wants answers from Anthony about why she used Gonzalez's name in connection to the disappearance of Caylee Anthony.

"This video is a preview of everything we predicted she would do," attorney John Morgan said. "It's for profit. She has gamed the system. We will be renewing our motion to have her testify."

Anderson Cooper wants to know Dr. Jan Garavaglia’s reaction to Casey Anthony’s behavior in YouTube clips released last week.
“I really was concerned about her behavior those 31 days that that girl was missing, and I really don’t care about her behavior now,” the star of “Dr. G: Medical Examiner” says in an interview Tuesday on “Anderson.”

“Well, I can’t make things up,” Garavaglia says. “We certainly think that the duct tape probably had something to do with her death. You know, she’s in a plastic bag, there’s the question of chloroform, there’s evidence she was in the back of a trunk. So I couldn’t stay for sure that that tape was to shut her up or suffocate her if another means was used.”
Cooper asks: “It’s possible the duct tape was put on even after she died?”
Dr. G replies: “There’d be no reason to do that. We know the duct tape was there before any significant decomposition occurred.”

'My job is to see what the body can tell us and what it can't tell us.'

Mr Cooper asked: 'And what her body told you was what?'

RadarOnline.com reports: “While the big four networks have refused to pay Anthony for an interview, citing the backlash of groups across the country who are threatening to boycott anyone that gives Casey money for an interview, The Dirty apparently has no qualms about shelling out big bucks for the exclusive get.”

What do you think of that?

Depositions: Doctor became 'sick' over Casey's lies

One of the psychiatrists said he became physically ill over being used to further what he called Casey's "far-fetched" claims that her father and brother had raped her, and that her father had killed Caylee.

Maitland psychiatrist Dr. Jeffrey Danziger told prosecutors before the trial that Casey told stories that may not be true. Danziger quoted her as saying, "I think he held her underwater, maybe he was doing something to her and he tried to cover it up."

Danziger told prosecutor Jeff Ashton he was sick over being the "vector" for Casey's story, saying, "I am deeply, deeply troubled. And I have lost much sleep, lost weight, and I don't know, I want to do the right thing."

"The defense has latitude in what they choose to believe is the truth, but the state does not have that latitude, it is bound by the evidence," said WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer.

Sheaffer, who is a defense attorney and former prosecutor, said he's never seen anyone more determined or successful as Casey in getting people to believe her lies.

Sheaffer said Casey's new videos are further proof.

"I hate being on camera, but I don't know. I need to conquer that fear at some point," Casey said in her video diary.

"We have a different stage. We have the same actress," Sheaffer said.

ORLANDO - Jose Baez and Dorothy Clay Sims have withdrawn as Casey Anthony's attorneys, according to reports.

Without citing sources, the celebrity website TMZ.com reports that Baez "has decided to REMOVE HIMSELF from Anthony's legal team." Note the use of capital letters.

The Orlando Sentinel tried to contact Baez for confirmation, but he had not returned the calls.

"On Wednesday, the New York Post reported that Casey planned to fire Baez over his dealings with the media and his apparent failure to land a lucrative interview deal.

Opinion: Casey's 'defiling her daughter in death'
By Jane Velez-Mitchell

Casey Anthony says her daughter Caylee was conceived through date rape!

It's an absolute shocker as details from Casey's never-before-seen psychological evaluation are revealed for the first time. And in these hundreds of pages of depositions of psychologists taken before the trial began comes one of the most sickening details. She is once again defiling her daughter in death.

Gonzalez's attorneys seek doctors in Anthony mental evaluations
John Morgan files motion to use doctors as witnesses

Attorneys for Zenaida Gonzalez have filed a motion to talk to the psychologist and psychiatrist who gave mental evaluations of Casey Anthony prior to her murder trial.

According to court records, attorney John Morgan filed the motion on Thursday to use Dr. Jeffery Danziger and Dr. William Weitz as witnesses for Gonzalez’s civil suit. Gonzalez is suing Anthony for defamation, claiming her life was ruined after Anthony linked her to Caylee Anthony's disappearance in 2008.

Casey Anthony: ‘Body of Proof’ finds a bit of inspiration in case

The plot on “Body of Proof” sounds familiar: A young mother goes free in her child’s murder, but the public says justice hasn’t been served.

The script was “loosely inspired” by the Casey Anthony case, said Matthew Gross, executive producer of the ABC drama. ”The only similarity is a young woman accused of killing her child, and sympathy goes with the child,” Gross said.

In July, Anthony was acquitted of murder in the death of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. Anthony is serving probation for check fraud somewhere in Florida.

“We’re not condoning someone taking her out, no matter how many films she puts out on YouTube,” Gross said of Anthony. “We don’t condone that behavior. Every life is precious.”

This article breaks it down into 3 categories: Civil suits, Ashton's issue, and Anthony's marketability.

"With the release of two mental health experts' depositions this week, another full iteration of Casey Anthony's story is available for the public to ingest and dissect.

Some pieces of what Anthony told her doctors made their way into her defense at trial — such as the claims she was sexually abused by her father and that her daughter drowned. But other accounts jurors did not hear, including Anthony's claim that her father was responsible for young Caylee Marie's death.

It's true that Anthony's criminal trial is long over and many have grown weary of her story. Still, many others remain drawn to anything Casey.

So the full impact of unsealing these depositions remains uncertain: How will they affect the civil lawsuits filed against Casey Anthony? Will they negate an attempt to have retired prosecutor and State Attorney candidate Jeff Ashton held in contempt? And do they dash any hopes Anthony had of selling her story? "

... Anthony’s whereabouts, while she serves a year’s probation for check fraud, have been kept shrouded for her safety.

But there’s another issue: the public’s safety.

The drawbacks to engaging Anthony? She has a scary way of taking over whatever is happening in a community. She can go through the money of others, from relatives to acquaintances to taxpayers. She has a tendency to lie, as friends, family and law enforcement can attest. She can hurt those closest to her. She rarely takes responsibility.

If you see her, go the other way. Please.

Will depositions of Casey Anthony doctors have an impact?

By Anthony Colarossi / The Orlando Sentinel
Saturday, January 14, 2012 -

Her doctors’ depositions show "Casey Anthony would say whatever she needed to say and do to get an acquittal," Sheaffer said. "She’ll always garner interest. I just don’t think she’s marketable."

That may be, but some entrepreneurial type may well risk trying to re-sell and re-package Anthony’s story in her own words, despite her being characterized as "toxic" by some major media outfits.

As has always been the case with Anthony, when she speaks, there is seemingly no limit to the level of detail, conflict and intrigue contained in her stories. The final question: Can any of it ever be believed?

“Body of Proof,” at 10 on ABC, finds a bit of inspiration in the Casey Anthony case. But the scripted drama soon goes off a different tangent: The young mother is found dead in the first few minutes. Who did away with her? The strong guest cast includes Joanna Cassidy, Rita Wilson and Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden. Harden offers a flamboyant sendup of hard-driving TV hosts. Think Nancy Grace, and you can’t go wrong.

However, Munyon found that two Texas EquuSearch requests for admissions would not implicate Anthony, and she ordered her to provide responses within 10 days. The order was dated Tuesday, but hit the court file today.

"Because the answers to all but two of the requests could provide a link in the chain of evidence at any retrial of the conviction currently on appeal, the defendant has properly asserted her fifth amendment privilege to all but two," Munyon ruled.

We had a stunning reminder today in Orlando, when a new push was announced to find Jennifer Kesse, who vanished six years ago. A task force of 19 experts, including Chief Medical Examiner Jan Garavaglia, has been assembled to study the case.

Michelle Parker, the mother of twins, remains missing. She disappeared in November shortly after her appearance on ”The People’s Court” aired nationwide. Her family has kept the attention on Michelle through frequent TV appearances. Michelle, too, is blessed with a family with a big mouth.

AUGUSTA, Maine -- A pair of bills requiring notification of authorities when a child is missing drew support Thursday from Gov. Paul LePage, police and lawmakers who said they have been flooded with emails since the event that inspired the proposals: the acquittal of 2-year-old Caylee Anthony's mother in Florida.

In Maine, outraged citizens have demanded legislation to prevent that from happening in their state, "to send a clear message that such neglect will not be tolerated," said Rep. Joyce Maker, R-Calais, who spoke in favor of both bills Thursday.
One bill would make failing to report a missing child within 24 hours a crime, and the other would make it a crime to fail to report a missing child under 13 years old within 48 hours.
