Police baffled by Texas I-45 murders

Police baffled by Texas I-45 murders

The murders beside a Texas highway of several young women remain unsolved

By the BBC's Brian Barron in Texas
In Texas, the FBI have been called in to investigate nearly 30 murders - all of them schoolgirls or young women - along an 80km (50 mile) stretch of motorway between Houston and the Gulf Coast.

Watch Brian Barron's report from I-45
The killings span 28 years but none has been solved. Local police forces have been criticised for failing to help each other.

As dusk falls on Interstate 45 or I-45 as it is known, there is one question lurking in the minds of many: Is this the most dangerous road in America?

The 11 police forces whose precints cover the length of I-45 failed to realise that there was a deadly pattern.

Tim Miller is frustrated by the inability of the Texas police authorities to solve his daughter's murder
For one father, Tim Miller, the past 15 years have been a living hell.

"We've got no suspects, no closure and we've still got a serial killer walking around some place," he says.

Tim Miller's 16 year-old daughter was murdered and dumped within earshot of I-45 - and the bodies of at least three other female victims were found nearby at different times.

Police frustration

Stung by criticism of their failure to find and convict even one of the murderers who have prowled I-45, local police forces have turned to the FBI.

But, as Detective Carla Costello of the Texas City Police Department put it, no one is optimistic about a breakthrough.

"It's very frustrating. You feel like you're not doing your job. There's somebody out there who's been waiting 28 years for a phone call - from us - to say that we know who murdered their child," she says.

Arguably the muddled investigations over the years left families moving into the new housing developments along I-45 vulnerable.

They had no warning that serial killers were literally getting away with murder. So parents like Gail Smither didn't take precautions.

Twelve-year old Laura Smither left her home to go jogging two years ago. Three weeks later her headless body was dumped in a pond.

" We thought we lived in a really safe town," her mother says. "And that at nine o'clock in the morning, to go for a run on a little private road, that she would be fine."

The day that death came calling at Friendswood
DAVID USBORNE IN FRIENDSWOOD, TEXAS

ABOUT 20 miles south of Houston, the dormitory town of Friendswood was once named the safest community in America - a place where people routinely left their doors unlocked. Even today, its police headquarters, with noticeboards advertising lost pets, has an almost cosy air. Chief Jarred Stout sits in a windowless office with a microwave and coffee maker crowding his desk. But appearances deceive.

Everything changed here two years ago when a local 12-year-old girl named Laura Smither went jogging close to her parent's home and did not return. Three weeks later, on 3 April 1997, a game hunter and his dog found her decomposed body in a drainage pond in a south Houston suburb. Laura, who weeks earlier had been accepted into ballet academy, had been abducted and savagely murdered

ELUSIVE ANSWERS / The searches for Laura Smither and Jessica Cain serve as a reminder that numerous cases of missing or murdered young women and girls have yet to be solved

SINCE THE MID 1980s, a scrubby pasture crisscrossed with horse trails in Galveston County has been called the "killing fields".
Four bodies were found there from 1984 to 1991. Today, the person using the "killing fields" as his personal graveyard remains unidentified.

In the 1970s, a $10,000 reward was offered for the killer of a 13-year-old girl in Brazoria County. Today, unclaimed, it is being used to fund scholarships in her name. Meanwhile, her murder is listed among at least eight unsolved cases believed to be linked.

More recently, in Harris County, an anonymous man telephoned a TV tip line in 1995 to report a "serial killer on the loose." Implying he was that killer, he gave directions to the body of a 16-year-old girl who had been strangled. He never called again. He is considered a suspect not only in her death but also in several others.

Memories of these and similar cases - all involving young women and girls and all unsolved, some for decades - resurfaced recently as news stories focused on massive searches for two girls who disappeared in Galveston County. Various authorities have indicated at least three serial killers are responsible for some of the deaths.

An unidentified female body was found in a field in the 3000 block of Calder Rd, the same field where the bodies of other young, female homicide victims were found in previous years.

"Janet Doe" had been beaten and strangled. It is estimated she was dead for one to six weeks before her skeletal remains were discovered in the "Killing Field".

The victims whose bodies were found near Janet Doe:

04/04/1984 -- Heidi Villareal Fye, 23, beaten in the head with a club
09/10/1984 -- Laura Lynn Miller, 16, shot in the head
02/02/1986 -- Jane Doe, 15-20, died of a gunshot wound

From the Doe Network Case File 52UFTX

"The victim was discovered in a field located in the 3000 block of Calder Road of League City, outside Galveston, Texas.
She was the second of four bodies that would be found in the area, dubbed by the press "the Killing Fields." Heide Fye's body was discovered on April 1984. Laura Miller's remains were also found on February 2, 1986. The skeletal remains of another unidentified woman, Janet Doe was found in the same field in September of 1991. Authorities theorize that the four women were all killed by the same person. Police say all the women were similar in age, height and hair color and all were found in similar ways: nude, lying face up. The women were not buried, just hidden from view.
The League City Jane Doe case is included along with 26 other women in the area that have been murdered or missing since 1971. Authorities believe there may be several serial killers responsible for some of the deaths and disappearances."

Tests were conducted on hair fibers and guns removed from the home of Robert Abel in November, League City police Detective Pat Bittner said.
"The FBI couldn't connect any of that stuff to Abel," said Bittner, who sent the hair fibers vacuumed from Abel's home to FBI headquarters in Quantico, Va., for testing. "None of the hair matched the victims."

LEAGUE CITY - Searchers found what appeared to be a woman's blouse Wednesday in their second - and final - day of sifting through a pond for evidence in four murders.
The item will be tested, police said, but they were doubtful it is connected to four young women whose nude bodies were found in an area off Calder Road between 1984 and 1991.

LEAGUE CITY - A Texas prison inmate has confessed to killing as many as six women in Fort Bend and Galveston counties, including some at the infamous site here known as the "killing field," authorities said Friday.
Mark Roland Stallings, 34, has not yet been charged with any of the murders, however.
League City police Capt. Chris Reed said DNA tests will confirm whether Stallings was involved in any of the slayings of four women whose bodies were dumped in a field off Calder Road just west of Interstate 45 from 1983 to 1991.
"He confessed to multiple homicides. We don't know which ones at this time," Reed said. "We have an idea but we're not real sure because we haven't corroborated what he said."

Although Stallings confessed, he was never charged. Janet Doe remains unidentified, and the four murders are still unsolved.

Accused Serial Killer 'Ready' For Death Penalty

Convicted Murder Faces Life In Prison Or Death
POSTED: Friday, October 22, 2004
UPDATED: 5:44 pm CDT October 22, 2004

The former tow truck driver was found guilty of a capital murder charge in the April 1992 death of Maria Del Carmen Estrada, 21. He also is charged with killing two teenage girls and a 9-year-old girl over a nine-year span.
Prosecutors say Shore kidnapped Estrada and sexually assaulted her before leaving her body in a restaurant's drive-through lane.
Shore's attorneys have admitted that their client killed Estrada. But they said he should have been convicted only of murder, rather than capital murder, because he did not kidnap or sexually assault her. They were asking for a life sentence.

This man was a known sex offender and here's the kicker:

Houston Man Now Held In Serial Killings
When accused serial killer Anthony Allen Shore was placed on probation five years ago for sexually molesting two young girls in his family, he faced standard restrictions: Don't live or go within 100 yards of any place -- a school, a playground, a video arcade, a day care center, public swimming pool -- where children gather.
But for at least two, possibly three, years after his January 1998 trial, Shore lived openly, and with official blessing, in plain view of an elementary school. (More)

Shore was charged with Diana's murder. She had been strangled with a tourniquet when her body was discovered in August, 1984. She was abducted on her way to a convenience store on Main around the 6600 block of Main in the Heights area of Houston.

October 19, 2003

One day in August 1995, Piedra wanted to make agua de sandia - watermelon juice - but realized she didn't have sugar.

"My daughter told me she would run to the store and get it," Piedra recalls. Diana never came back.

Virginia Piedra always hoped police might someday capture the man who raped and killed her 9-year-old daughter in 1964 so she could finally end the years of lingering uncertainty.

"I'd like to talk to (the suspect), to ask him what he was thinking when he killed my daughter - my little girl," Piedra said in Spanish during a sometimes tearful interview in her northeast Houston home Tuesday. "But I know he couldn't answer."

Dana Sanchez went missing on July 8, 1995. One week later, Anthony Allen Shore called KPRC radio station KPRC in Houston with the location of the field where her body lay. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled. A toothbrush was used to make a tourniquet.

Her murder in 1995 was the type of case that haunted even a seasoned homicide investigator like him: Just 16 years old, Sanchez had been sexually assaulted and strangled, the noose cinched with a toothbrush.

More than 10 years later, Glenda Whitson recalls each second of the 8 minutes that changed her family's life.

It began with a visit from her grandchildren, Amber Hagerman, 9, and brother Ricky, 5.

Jimmie Whitson kept two bicycles at the house for the grandkids, and Amber and Ricky asked if they could go for a quick ride on the sunny winter day.

"My husband and my daughter said, 'OK, but just go once around the block,'" Glenda Whitson told Crime Library.

They peddled around two corners to the parking lot of a Winn-Dixie grocery store that had been closed for some time. Neighborhood kids enjoyed riding on a ramp there...

"They rode over there and went down the ramp," Mrs. Whitson said. "Ricky told his sister, 'I'm going back home because mama told us to just ride around the block.' So he rode back here, and my husband asked him, 'Where's Sissy?' He said she stayed for one more ride on the ramp, so they sent him back for her."

Ricky Hagerman left but returned a minute or two later and said, "I can't find Sissy."

Four days after the abduction, a man walking his dog spotted Amber's naked body in a creek bed near an apartment complex in north Arlington. The girl's throat had been slit.

I remember commenting on amber's case in cold cases. Before i knew anything or very little about the killing fields or Amber herself. When i seen this posted just now it kinda shocked me. To think she may had been murdered by one of the serial killers. It never dawn on me to look for a connection to other children whom may-have met a similar fate as Amber.

I would like to post what i believe may be victims killed by the same person/persons based upon physical similarities only without any details but will provide a link to where the photo came from and includes the details that I did-not include. You and the other moderators here can alter, delete move or do whatever you like with them at your discretion at anytime.
Would that be OK to do?

You and ikoihil and the others are doing phenomenal work in putting this
together. Its hard for me to explain what i mean by that, but your making things more calm and orderly and not so vast and confusing where one would be lost without your help.

Your visual aids, such as old newspaper articles from the time the crimes occurred are absolutely priceless.

Both girls were shot. Fisher was fully clothed, but Bibbs was wearing only a blouse and sandals. The rest of her clothes were missing. When there bodies were found, the lack of scratches and bruises led investigators to believe they had not been sexually assaulted. They were last seen a couple of days earlier when they went to a nightclub with a 22 year-old acquaintance. He took them to a motel on Old Spanish Trail afterward, and claims he left them alive Friday morning, but returned later to find them gone.

Bibbs' mother, Verlina Bibbs, was murdered about ten years earlier. Her throat was cut, and her body left in a field in La Porte.

LIBERTY - Because different types of bullets were found at the wooded Liberty County area where two La Porte girls were killed, investigators believe two assailants were involved.
Liberty County sheriff's detectives would divulge little information Tuesday, but Justice of the Peace Fred Dishongh Jr. said two men are wanted for questioning in the shooting deaths of Lynette Bibbs, 14, and her best friend, Tamara Fisher, 15.
The men's names have not been released.
The girls left their homes in La Porte Thursday night with a friend. Their bodies were found Saturday in an isolated area near Cleveland.

On March 5, 1996, Krystal Jean Baker left her grandmother's house at approximately 1:20 p.m. With no word from her by that evening, her grandmother reported her missing. Two weeks later her body was found under the I-10 bridge over the Trinity River is Texas City. She had been strangled.

DNA linked a Louisiana man, Kevin Edison Smith, 45, to Krystal's murder. He was arrested and charged in September, 2010.

TEXAS CITY — The mother of a girl found slain under a Chambers County bridge in 1996 said Friday a suspect’s arrest and murder charge in the cold case was a miracle. Kevin Edison Smith, 45, of Louisiana, was arrested Wednesday at his refinery job in Groves on a Chambers County Sheriff’s Office warrant, charging him with murder in the killing of Krystal Jean Baker, Texas City Police Chief Robert Burby said. DNA gathered from the case and processed through the Texas Department of Public Safety led to an arrest, Burby said.

She said, "I wish I could wake up out of this nightmare and hold my little girl in my arms."
Adding to her grief was the fact that her daughter's killer was never brought to justice. On the run all these years -- until now. DNA evidence led authorities to arrest 45-year-old Kevin Edison Smith of Louisiana. He was taken into custody at a job site in Chambers County where he'd been working as a welder.

February 7 ,1996

So sad and for Lynette's mother to have been murdered too. God bless that family. I hope they find the person(s) responsible for Lynette's and Tamara's murders.

I wonder if they found the person who murdered Lynette's mother? So sad.

Case Type: Endangered Missing
DOB: Aug 28, 1979
Sex: Female
Missing Date: Aug 17, 1997
Race: White
Age Now: 32
Height: 5'4" (163 cm)
Missing City: LA MARQUE
Weight: 140 lbs (64 kg)
Missing State : TX
Hair Color: Brown
Missing Country: United States
Eye Color: Blue
Case Number: NCMC836647
Circumstances: Jessica's photo is shown aged to 29 years. She was last seen by friends at a local restaurant on the evening of August 17, 1997. Her vehicle was later found abandoned on the shoulder of I-45 South, near Highland Bayou Park, but Jessica's whereabouts are unknown.

Cain's truck was discovered locked and abandoned near the location her friend last saw her on Interstate 45 southbound at 5:00 a.m. that same day. Her wallet was on the driver's seat of the vehicle but her keys were missing. There was no sign of Cain at the scene and no damage to the truck, but the vehicle's camper appeared to have been tampered with.

Authorities are also searching for the driver of a mid-to-full-size white pickup truck who may have been a witness during the time Cain disappeared on the interstate. Witnesses reported seeing the car pursuing Cain's vehicle at a high rate of speed. The driver's truck is described as having a white toolbox mounted near the cab and a light bar with rotating yellow/orange lights. In addition, another possible witness is also being sought in connection with Cain's disappearance. He is described as an African-American male, approximately 25 to 32 years old with a short Afro-style haircut. The witness was driving a purple Dodge or Plymouth Neon at the time he may have seen Cain. Authorities believe the possible witness may be involved in the music industry.

A private investigator claimed that there was a possible link between Cain's disappearance and Jonathan David Drew. Drew was charged with the murder of Tina Michelle Flood in December 1998. He was employed as an automobile mechanic at the time Cain disappeared. The investigator said that Drew had access to a red Isuzu Amigo in August 1997. The Amigo was in the possession of a used car dealership where Drew occasionally worked. It is not known if Drew was the driver of the vehicle spotted behind Cain's truck on the day she disappeared. Cain's case is also being investigated along with the murders or disappearances of numerous other women from the Galveston County, Texas area since the 1970s. It is not known if any of the cases are connected to one another, but the Federal Bureau Of Investigation (FBI) and Texas law enforcement have formed Operation HALT (Homicide/Abduction Liason Team) to look into the possibilities. The disappearances of Sondra Ramber in 1983, Michelle Thomas in 1985 and Suzanne Richerson in 1988 are among the cases being investigated by Operation HALT.

Cain is described as a model teenager who had no enemies and would not run away from home. She had recently graduated from O'Connell High School and was due to start her freshman year at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas the week after her disappearance. She planned to major in criminology and drama. Cain's case remains unsolved.

Maria Del Carmen Estrada - Age 21, Hispanic, brunette. One of Anthony Allen Shore's strangulation victims, killed in April 1992. Estrada was last seen when she left her home to walk to work. Her body was found hours later in the drive through lane of a Dairy Queen restaurant. One breast had a mark similar to a bite. A ligature and garrote composed of a small piece of wooden dowel had been twisted so tightly that it was embedded in Maria’s neck.

Shore once reportedly lived in League City, the Galveston city where the infamous "Killing Fields" are located. Where 4 other victims have were discovered between 1983 and 1991.

Shore told police Estrada got into his car after he offered her a ride to work. He said he parked behind a Dairy Queen and kissed her and she got violent when he tried to have sex with her. "I opened her blouse and she resisted," he told a detective in October 2003. "There were voices in my head that I was going to have her, regardless, to possess her in some way." He said he did not set out to kill her, but the situation got out of hand. He said he did not have sex with her, although he tried to.

The state of Texas will execute an admitted serial killer. A jury in Houston has convicted and sentenced Anthony Shore for strangling Maria del Carmen Estrada as well as two teenagers and a 9-year-old girl between 1986 and 1995. All of his victims were strangled and assaulted.

July 6, 1995, 16-year-old Dana Sanchez disappeared while hitchhiking to see her boyfriend. Eight days later, an anonymous caller contacted a local TV station’s TIPS line and reported that a serial killer was on the loose and that there was a body in the field of a commercial property development. The reporter who took the call was convinced that it was made by someone tapping the telephone line. Dana’s body was so badly decomposed when it was found that the medical examiner said that without the garrote of a toothbrush and the yellow nylon rope left around her neck, he would not have been able to determine the cause of death. (Shore later confessed to making the phone calls while he was working for a phone company).

Dana Sanchez, 16, was talking on a payphone at West Cavalcade at Airline. On July 14, her body was found on North View Park. Shore confessed to the murder of Sanchez. As he detailed each murder, he provided “excuses” for why he had to kill each.

Anthony Allen Shore Confessed to the Murder of Diana Rebollar. "Too young. Not developed. That was an opportunity, a freaky thing that I don't know why I did that. I remember seeing this girl walking alone. North Main somewhere around 21st to 26th. I know there is a parking lot and I pulled in and I talked to her and... I just picked her up, put her in the van. I just threw her in initially and I told her to be quiet and that it was a kidnapping and that she wasn't gonna get hurt, this and that. She fought and fought and I don't recall what type of cord or strand, a piece of wire or something. And the same thing. I knew I was f****d and I don't know why the s**t kept happening. I couldn't stop it."

October 19, 1993 - A girl, 14, was sexually assaulted in her home in the 1900 block of Portsmouth. She had come home from school to find the suspect in the kitchen. After assaulting her, the suspect fled and the girl survived.

He duct-taped her eyes and mouth, tied her hands with wire behind her back, and sexually assaulted her after threatening her with a knife. This victim was unable to identify anyone because her assailant wore a t-shirt over his head; her only descriptors were that he was a white male with no accent. Shore named the address where this offense occurred, and HPD records were pulled up concerning that case. Later DNA analysis of this victim’s sexual assault kit matched Shore’s DNA profile. Shore bragged that he “did this one” to prove to himself that he didn’t have to kill after he raped.

That's what I was thinking, especially if we have a mobile SK running around. I started with a list of missing people that were ruled out as Princess Blue, since she was found so close to League City. Then, going by proximity & description of victim and disappearance, I decided to post specific cases... I think someone here can recognize similarities with our existing information, hopefully.

Maria Socorro Kimbrell
Missing since June 19, 1991 from Huntsville, Walker County, Texas
Classification: Missing

Date Of Birth: May 13, 1963
Age at Time of Disappearance: 28 years old
Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'5"; 190 lbs.
Distinguishing Characteristics: White/Hispanic female. Red hair; possibly dyed brown. Brown eyes.
Dentals: Gold-filled window crown on #7 front tooth.
AKA: Maria uses her maiden name (Bobadilla) sometimes.

Circumstances of Disappearance
Kimbrell is missing from her home in Huntsville, Texas since mid-June 1991. Three weeks after the alleged date of her disappearance,
Maria's husband told other family members that she had gone to Honduras for a visit on June 19, 1991.
There is no evidence that she made the trip. All of her personal belongings were in her home at the time of her disappearance. She has not been seen since.

I wonder what her husband has been up to these past 20 years.
And how long after, did he remain in the area.
Perhaps he still does.

Unidentified White/Hispanic Female

•The victim was discovered on September 10, 1990 in Brazoria County, Texas.
•Estimated Date of Death: 1-5 years prior
•Skeletal Remains

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vital Statistics

•Estimated age: 15 - 25 years old
•Approximate Height and Weight: 4'11" - 5'3"; with a slight to medium build.
•Distinguishing Characteristics: Originally thought to be Hispanic, the new analysis indicates the young woman was White, with the probability of some Black traits. According to the forensic analysis, it is likely one parent or one grandparent was Black.
•Skeletal Findings: Two fractured ribs; and a defect on a bone beneath her left knee. The victim possibly had a tumor on her knee.
•Jewelry: One pearl, beaded bracelet. Six rings. One gold band ring with six clear stones; one silver band with a scroll design; two thin silver bands; one silver-colored ring with a turquoise horse or unicorn. One 1975, size 9 1/2, Robert E. Lee, Houston, TX, High School ring. This ring has a blue stone with a silver colored, inexpensive metal band. It is unknown whether or not there were ever engravings on the inner side of the ring's band. The ring was up sized twice, which would have removed evidence of previous engravings. However, it does have an inlaid, "L" which many students chose as an option that year that stands for the school mascot, Robert E. Lee himself.

•Dentals: Available. There were several teeth with untreated carries, and two amalgam fillings. Tooth #10, an upper left, lateral incisor, which is right next to her two front most teeth was surgically removed prior to death and the corresponding space was partially obliterated by mature bone

Langwell's 1994 Nissan Altima, found in Eckerd's Pharmacy parking lot with belongings inside

Name: Kimberly Ann Langwell
AKA: Kim Langwell, Kimberly Ann Clark
Case Number: M9908010
Case Type: Endangered - Foul Play Possible
Last Seen in: Beaumont (Jefferson County)
Last Seen on: 7/9/1999
Height: 5' 4 "
Weight: 135 lbs.
Age Missing: 34
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Blonde
Date of Birth: 2/14/1965
Race: White
Sex: Female
State Missing From: Texas
Country Missing From: USA
NCIC Number: M-9908010

Circumstances: Ms. Langwell has a scar under her chin, and a reddish purple birthmark on her mid to lower back. She was last seen wearing a white T-shirt, blue jeans, and white tennis shoes. Ms. Langwell wears a Seiko watch with glowing numbers (silver in color), a silver necklace with a "Angel" medallion, silver hoop earrings, and a gold wedding band on her left hand. Her car was found parked and secure with personal items inside. She has made no attempt to contact her 15 year old daughter since the date of her disappearance. According to those who know Kimberly, this is highly unusual.

Langwell called her teenage daughter at about 5:30 in the afternoon of July 9, 1999 in their hometown of Beaumont, TX. Langwell reminded her about dinner plans they had for that evening and said she would return home at 6:30 p.m. after visiting a friend. Langwell's boyfriend began searching for her when she did not arrive at her residence later that night.

He discovered her silver 1994 Nissan Altima abandoned in the parking lot of the Eckerd Pharmacy at a shopping center on Dowlen Road and Phelan Boulevard or Phelan Avenue at approximately 10:30 p.m. A photograph of the vehicle is posted above this case summary. Langwell's purse and car keys were missing, but her cellular phone, cosmetics and other personal items were inside the car. There was no other sign of her at the scene and an extensive search of the area produced no clues as to her whereabouts. Langwell has never been heard from again.

Langwell's family members believe that she departed from the pharmacy with someone she trusted. They say it would be highly uncharacteristic of her not to make contact with her daughter for so long. Her loved ones believe Langwell's ex-boyfriend was responsible for her disappearance; the individual had reportedly threatened her and frightened her so badly that she told her sister where to look for her remains if she were to disappear. Foul play is suspected in Langwell's disappearance. She was employed at the Mobil Oil refinery in Beaumont in 1999.

Hi Bessie,

Looks great! Very organized.

I was just wondering why you have chosen to omit some victim names... or was it unintentional?

Thanks,

Ikoihil

PS - Can you believe we have 110+ on those, and the estimates given by LE have steadily hovered around 30??

It's unintentional Ikoihil. I'm still filling in names as I find them or as you guys post them. But y'all are fast! And my time is really limited. I'll catch up with ya soon though. ;). I thought the spreadsheet would be a good tool because I can sort by date, county, etc. I have to break it up to post here. Otherwise the file is too large to upload.

Missing Woman: Tara Suzette Breckenridge--TX--08/04/1992
Gender: Female
DOB: 9/30/68
Height: 5’5”
Weight: 115-120 lbs.
Eyes:Brown
Hair: Brown
The Doe Network: Case File 603DFTX
Defining Characteristics: Has a small scar under the left side of her lower lip, a scar under her left arm, and a scar on her left side. She was known to keep her fingernails long and painted red. She wears contacts or glasses.
Clothing: She was wearing blue shorts, a light-colored top and sandals.
Jewelry: A Del Rio High School ring engraved with Class of 1981
Dentals: Her two upper front teeth are discolored in the middle.

The Men's Club in Houston, is an upscale adult night spot. Tara Breckenridge waited tables there from 1989 to 1992. Tara grew up in Del Rio, TX, and was the third of five children in a devoutly religious family. After high school, she arrived in Houston to pursue a career in photography. It wasn't long before the cost of big city living forced her to find another job. As a waitress at The Men's Club, Tara found the cash she needed.

In 1992, she vanished without a trace. The police and her parents believed Tara was murdered. And high on the list of possible suspects was Tara's boyfriend at the time, a young man named Wayne Hecker. Wayne and Tara had met two years after Tara arrived in Houston. Even though Tara never danced at The Men's Club, Wayne was less than thrilled with her job. Despite Wayne's concerns, he and Tara moved in together. At first, they seemed happy. But according to Tara's mother, Betty, the romance did not last.

Tara's job at The Men's Club distracted her from the problems with Wayne. But on the night of August 3, 1992, Tara did something that remains unexplained. It was a slow night and the management decided to send two waitresses home early. When the manager asked for volunteers to end their shift early, Tara volunteered to leave. According to Hal Naumann, the former manager of The Men's Club, it was strangely out of character, since she would usually stay until 2am, to make as much tip money as possible.

The security guard at the club told police that he walked Tara to her car and that she drove off without incident. Wayne Hecker later told the police that, at the moment Tara was leaving The Men's Club, he was in a pool hall fifteen minutes away. Wayne said he called Tara earlier that evening, but never spoke to her:
"I didn't really think anything at that time and they told me that she was on the floor. I probably got home around five and I expected to see Tara either lying on the sofa or in bed and she wasn't there. So at that point... I went to find her."

At 7:00 the next morning, Wayne found Tara's car abandoned on a busy freeway. According to Wayne, the car was locked and a can of mace was inside and the car's flashers weren't on.
http://www.unsolved.com/ajaxfiles/images/cases/mis_tara_breckenridge6.jpg

Police feared that Tara was a victim of foul play. It wasn't long before suspicion began to center on Wayne Hecker. Sergeant Brad Rudolph of the Houston Police Department, interrogated Wayne and was especially curious about his activities the night Tara disappeared:
"We have employees of the club that indicated that he left the club at approximately midnight and was next seen at approximately 1:45 in the morning."

The pool hall is located fifteen minutes from The Men's Club. Tara's car was found about three miles from the club. According to witnesses, Wayne was gone from the pool hall for a full hour and forty-five minutes. But with no concrete evidence of foul play, Tara was officially listed as missing.

When police obtained a series of love notes indicating there was another man in Tara's life, they thought there might be a break in the case. According to co-workers at the club, Tara's admirer was a frequent visitor who lavished her with hundred dollar tips. He apparently had intimate knowledge of her difficulties with Wayne. But according to Sergeant Rudolph, the notes seemed to indicate that Tara rejected the man's advances:
"There was nothing threatening in those notes. We interviewed the individual. Our opinion at this point is he was just an individual that had an attraction toward Tara and nothing more."

Bessie, this is great. A lot of work. Thanks so much for doing this! You're right, we're adding daily....Ikoihil is anyway. She's doing a great job too!

Hope you don't mind, I added a Killing Fields UID Thread. It's a NO DISCUSSION THREAD. Just for referrence. Trying to get them all in there for folks to go to one place for the Unidentified Victims. Hopefully, some of our Great Sleuthers will be able to make matches and send some of these victims home.

Maybe you could edit my first post and give some direction to anyone who thinks they might have a match. "Please"....pretty please.

It would be great to send them all back to their families....... Hey, I'm an optimistic dreamer.........

Thanks so much for all your help and for caring as much about these victims as we do! We appreciate you so much!

I have read so many missing, located, and UID's and like you I keep running across things that I'm sure I have read previously. I have thought about doing a items (clothing, jewelry, scars, etc) list on victims and one on UID's. If you have any ideas on this please feel free to speak up. Anything that simplifies the process.....

It gets confusing! Maybe I can do that when I finish the UID Listings.

Hey Jeannie,

I think the idea about what was missing/found on UIDs (jewelry, clothes, etc) is a good one - from now on, when I'm posting these profiles, I'll highlight that in red so it's easier to find, rather than dredging all the info for it. Maybe an additional column could go in the spreadsheet made by Bessie? I don't know about having several sources of information, since it will be confusing to just about everyone but us... Let me know what y'all think.

Now, in regard to the UID thread... I have questions. Okay, should I replicate the information in both places (like if a victim is found in Montgomery County, should I post it in "Montgomery Co - North Killing Fields" and also place the same one in the UID thread?) Since the UID thread is no discussion, it should be in both the UID thread and the regional thread, right? Correct me if I'm wrong... Just trying to figure out how best to move forward.

Thanks

Jennifer Lynn Coibion
Missing since May 22, 1994 from Houston, Harris County, Texas.
Classification: Endangered Missing

* Date Of Birth: May 14, 1974
* Age at Time of Disappearance: 20 years old
* Height and Weight at Time of Disappearance: 5'9"; 115 lbs.
* Distinguishing Characteristics: White female. Blonde hair; blue eyes. She wears contacts and seldom wears glasses.
* Clothing: White shorts and a white shirt.
* Dentals: Available
* Other: Addicted to crack cocaine.

Coibion was last seen at the 9200 block of Interstate 45 on the service road near Mount Houston Road, in Houston on May 22, 1994.
She was seen at about 02.00 getting into a yellow station wagon after an argument with her boyfriend. Jennifer bolted from the confrontation to seek refuge in a yellow station wagon driven by a strange man. As the vehicle sped away, her boyfriend copied its license plate number and called police.

When Coibion was a senior in high school, she became addicted to crack cocaine. For about 18 months, Jennifer's disappearance was treated solely as a missing-person case. By the time the yellow station wagon was located at a wrecker storage lot, it had been purchased by another individual and thoroughly cleaned. There were no blood stains, no indication a crime might have occurred in it.

Police suspect foul play.

Yes, the UID should be in both. Anyone wanting to find only the UID info for matching purposes can use the UID thread for reference purposes.

It eliminates having to go through all the threads by year when you search for a UID. Since we don't always know what "year" the UID went missing having them in one place might make it easier for everyone to do lookups.

Make sense?

Please feel free to post anything you find. We all benefit from everyone's posts!

Name: Angela Abbrederis
AKA: Angela Kim Marie Abbrederis, Nagela Kimmarie Ng, Mei Ling, Audra Abbrederis, and/or Vanessa Abbrederis.
Case Number: M9610009
Case Type: Endangered - Foul Play Possible
Last Seen in: Dallas (Dallas County)
Last Seen on: 4/2/1996
Height: 5' 8 "
Weight: 115-120 lbs.
Age Missing: 27
Eye Color: Brown
Hair Color: Brown
Date of Birth: 10/25/1968
Race: White/Asian - although she is listed as White/Hispanic on some sites
Sex: Female
State Missing From: Texas
Country Missing From: USA

Circumstances: Angela has a tattoo of a butterfly on her right hip, a scar on her hip and has had breast augmentation. She was known to work in various men's clubs as a dancer. The day of her disappearance she didn't take her vehicle or any clothing. Her dog was also left behind in her apartment. Dental and x-rays are available.

Abbrederis was last seen in Dallas, Texas on April 2, 1996. She left her vehicle behind and did not take any of her personal belongings from her residence, including her clothes, luggage and car keys. Abbrederis also left her dog unattended inside her apartment. There was laundry left in the washing machine and piled on the bed, which Abbrederis's mother says is uncharacteristic of her daughter. There were also what appeared to be bloody fingerprints near the front door, but the "blood" turned out to be paint. Abbrederis has never been heard from again.

Abbrederis' boyfriend emptied their joint checking account after her disappearance, signed one of her cars over to himself, and withdrew money from her savings account. He told police that he jointly owned all of what he took. Investigators say the boyfriend's actions do not necessarily mean he was involved in Abbrederis's disappearance.

Abbrederis worked in various Dallas clubs as an exotic dancer at the time of her 1996 disappearance. She also has a history of prostitution. Her mother believes she was the victim of foul play. Abbrederis has family members living in Michigan and Hong Kong. She is an Army veteran. Her case remains unsolved.

Cause of Death: Unknown

Vital Statistics

Estimated age: 20-33 years old.
Approximate Height and Weight: Unknown.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Unknown.

Case History
On June 11, 1998, a man was walking in a wooded area behind his home in the 600 block of Airline Drive when he observed what appeared to be the top portion of a skull protruding from the ground.

Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputies investigated and recovered additional skeletal remains. The additional bones were determined not to be of human origin.

What appears to be a mounting hole was drilled into the cranium. The remains resemble other skulls that have been determined to be skull war trophies collected during Asian military action.

The remains were originally believed to be those of a male, however, DNA analysis in September 2010, has confirmed that they are those of a female.

The location and age of the victim and the UID are appropriate... I've been looking for an Asian Doe with breast implants (as for a match to Abbrederis), but this works because only the skull was recovered.

Also, Abbrederis' facial bone structure/jawline is a bit square, which might explain why they were under the impression Doe was an Asian male for a while.

LE estimates that Doe was deceased for 3+ years, but I question that because if there was a hole drilled/bored into the skull for mounting purposes, it was probably cleaned and prepared for such (like a hunter with a trophy mount?), thus leaving little to no residual soft tissue in the skull or on the bone.

Please provide feedback if you have any.

Judge sets January trial date for suspect in 'Killing Fields' murder

Lindsey Kovacevich

CHAMBERS COUNTY - KFDM News has learned a judge set a January 7 trial date for a man charged with capital murder in the 1996 beating, sexual assault and strangulation of 13-year-old Krystal Jean Baker in Chambers County.

Investigators say Kevin Edison Smith, 46, is a person of interest in several murders of young girls and women in the Houston to Galveston I-45 corridor, an area known as the "Killing Fields."

The families of the girls and young women later would learn the fate of their loved ones. Three had been sexually assaulted and all were strangled. On Monday, police charged Anthony Allen Shore with four counts of capital murder in connection with the deaths, the mysteries apparently solved by a Dallas lab the Houston Police Department contracts for evidence testing.

Shore, who has held several jobs over the years, including as a musician playing guitar and keyboard with a band, has had a number of addresses, but has remained in Houston most of his life, Swaim said.

The caller said, correctly, that the dead girl's birthday was May 11 and, incorrectly, that her name was Ruby. However, police said, Sanchez had a friend named Ruby and may have given her abductor that name.

Swaim said police believe Shore made that call.

Sanchez had been sexually assaulted.

The manner of Rebollar's strangulation was identical to that of Estrada, and uncommon enough that police were certain the two were victims of the same killer.

"I wish I could share with you ... what he told us, but it's unspeakable," Swaim said. "What he did is unspeakable.

"The tug of evil and good in this city is alive. Finally, good triumphed."

CHAMBERS COUNTY SHERIFF: LOUISIANA MAN CONFESSES TO KILLING 13-YEAR-OLD TEXAS CITY GIRL 14 YEARS AGO

By SCOTT REESE WILLEY

Hometown Press

A Louisiana man has confessed to killing a 13-year-old Texas City girl 14 years ago, Chambers County Sheriff Joe LaRive announced Thursday.

Kevin Edison Smith, 45, confessed on Oct. 19 to the slaying of Krystal Jean Baker in June 1996, LaRive told the media via email.

A state medical lab has confirmed earlier this month that Smith's DNA matched the DNA found on the dress of Baker, whose body was found beneath a Chambers County bridge in 1996, LaRive reported Friday.

Laura's Legacy

By Alex Tresniowski

Heartbroken by Their Daughter's Kidnapping, Bob and Gay Smither Found a Way to Help Other Parents Caught in a Crisis

Twelve-year-old Laura Smither was only a little late for breakfast, but she wasn't the type of girl to be late at all, much less for pancakes, her favorite meal. Everybody always remarked how Laura was so mature for her age, and if she said she was going to take a quick run and be back in time for pancakes, well, then, something had to be wrong. "We were out in the fields screaming her name," says her mother, Gay, now 42, of that awful April morning five years ago. "We thought maybe she had been run over and couldn't get up."

I didn't find any news stories to commemorate the 16th anniversary of Jessica Cain's disappearance, so I'll re-post this article published on the 15th anniversary last year.

Fifteen years later, Jessica Cain’s disappearance still a mystery (http://www.khou.com/news/Fifteen-years-later-Jessica-Cains-disappearance-still-a-mystery-166601086.html)

A young woman named Jessica Cain, just days away from her high school graduation, had spent the evening performing in a musical gala. A few of her drama club friends celebrated their performance at a Bennigan’s restaurant in the Clear Lake area. Then, she drove away in her pickup truck and simply vanished.

“You know all the time that she’s out there somewhere, and that the right person coming forward, the right person being brave even after all this time, and just giving us the information we need,” O’Neill said. “All we want to do is just know where she is.”continued with video at the link

This woman is my sister. I reported her missing on March 21, 1990. Her remains were actually found 18 months after she disappeared by hunters. Montgomery County had her listed as a Jane Doe until we came across her in 2001. This should never happen to a family, I mean THEY had her as a Jane Doe but didn't let other agency's know about her. For 11 years I searched and searched for her. We had a funereal in 2001, we never got a death certificate for Beverly, and here we are another 12 years later and nobody will give us one. She came up missing from Harris Co, but was found in Montgomery Co. Anybody got any ideas how to get a death certificate?

Welcome, KKsRoost. I'm so sorry about Beverly. It's awful to think she was right there in MC all that time and her family didn't know. Such a shame!

In Montgomery County, you can apply online to receive a certified copy of a death certificate. The fee is $20 for the first copy, and $3 for each additional copy. You, and you must be a relative, and I believe you have to submit a copy of a driver's license. Here is the link with the information you need. I hope this will help you.

I am appalled that people nor investigators give off the impression They care about some of theses cases now. One thing that I thought of was a girl being kidnapped by a man and raped with her throat cut and left for dead. She was left near a school and found alive. Years later DNA coughs the perp and he hanged himself in Dickinson jail. Could he have been a suspect in others?

Hard to believe, isn't it?

Are you talking about Jennifer Schuett? Dennis Bradford was the perp who attacked her, and I certainly do believe he could be responsible for more crimes. We might have a thread on him already in this forum. If not, I'll start one.

Because Schuett survived and was able to talk, despite her would be killer's intentions when he slit her throat, we've heard a first hand account of the vicious, cruel and inhuman acts waged by Dennis Bradford. Her voicebox was damaged by the blade he used, and doctors said she'd never speak again. Yet she went on to become a loud voice for the thousands of victims who didn't live to tell their tales. Such courage. May God bless her.

That's correct. Debbie Ackerman and Maria Johnson were friends. The White girl was a separate incident, and thankfully, she escaped.

Sutherlin's date might be off by a day. For the most part, they're accurate. It's surprising how many pairs of friends are on these lists. I have to upload the revised worksheets. And I just saw where my photos are missing on the other thread. Darn photobucket! I moved some images into folders and the links are all messed up. Anyway, here's the thread.
