View Full Version : David Bowie - Happy 65th Birthday Sunday 08 January

Alex Petridis's Guardian piece:
David Bowie: myth-maker turns 65 away from limelight (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/jan/06/david-bowie-turns-65)
It's a cliche when a rock star reaches 65 to mention the time when it didn't look like they'd make pensionable age, but with David Bowie who marks the milestone on Sunday, it's almost unavoidable. Look at a picture of him in the mid-70s, when he was ravaged by cocaine, living off a diet of red peppers and milk and so paranoid that he apparently kept his own urine in a fridge lest persons unknown steal it: this is not a man destined to make old bones.

From today's Daily Mirror:
Desperate to knock Mick Jagger off his pedestal as Britain’s Baddest Bad Boy at the time, Bowie declared archly: “I think Jagger would be astounded and amazed if he realised that to many people he is not a sex symbol but a mother image.” Miaow.

David Bowie:' Inspirational Bowie'.Radio2.Mark Radcliffe Show 2012. - YouTube
BBC Radio 2
Broadcast 2 January 2012.
As David Bowie's 65th birthday approaches [Sunday 8 January], Radio 2 revisits this celebration of the iconic popstar.
Mark Radcliffe hears from performers who have been inspired by Bowie and his music, including Boy George, Peter Hook, Marc Almond, Annie Lennox, Debbie Harry, Guy Garvey, Jarvis Cocker and Ricky Gervais.
Throughout his impressive career Bowie has embraced new ideas, changing visually and musically. The programme begins with Ziggy Stardust's explosion onto the pop landscape; before covering Bowie's relocation to California and the transformation which led to his Young Americans album.
It also considers how Bowie ignored the punk movement and created his own twilight world with three impressive albums in Berlin; and time is devoted to Bowie's move into acting, including The Man Who Fell To Earth and Ricky Gervais' Extras.
Inspirational Bowie first broadcast in January 2007 and has been updated to reflect the singer's latest milestone.

Swoon worthy thread. Brilliance in so many, many ways. Even my 9 year old daughter gets extra sparkles in her eyes when I, as is inevitable, throw a concert vid or Ziggy vid or anything with the Thin White Duke on the screen. I wish she could see him perform live, but alas...
I raise my glass to him and the many gifts he's given. Happy birthday and here's to many more trips round the sun.

Bowie (in the Mail):
Mike Garson's piano opens with the most ridiculous and spot-on re-creation of a 19th Century music hall 'exotic' number. I can see now the 'poses plastiques' as if through a smoke-filled bar. Fans, castanets and lots of Spanish black lace and little else. Sexy, mmm? And for you, Madam?
This was written for a wonderful young girl whom I've not seen for more than 30 years. When I hear this song she's still in her 20s, of course.
A song will put you tantalisingly close to the past, so close that you can almost reach out and touch it. The sound of ghosts again.

David Bowie- 01 & 02 Intro & Hang on to Yourself - YouTube
Ziggy and the Spiders had played around 50 UK shows total, and this Santa Monica performance, from October 20, 1972, would be our 12th in America.
Although of only bootleg quality and despite the drums and bass being casually miked, I hope you can feel our real thrill here of presenting the band to a radio audience for the first time. I necessarily took the most centre-stage position as easily as an old ham from Bromley Repertory would, though in reality I was deadly nervous.
This was our first live American radio broadcast, so it was a big deal. We fluffed a lot of stuff that night, but the enthusiasm and pride stand 10ft tall.
One astounding thing about Mainman, my management at the time, is that for the 18 months of the Spiders' life-cycle (and after, actually) they never arranged for us to play anywhere in Europe where Ziggy was a proverbial monster. No tours, no shows, not even Paris.
I never understood that and was pretty miserable about it at the time, but now realise how naive and unprepared my management was for the serious job of actually managing.

AWESOME!
I'm a rock and roll junkie. I loooove to go on adventures on the internet between youtube, wiki and in the last couple of days here watching, listening and learning about the artists, in influence they've has on one another, the way the art has influenced us normies :) etc.
Maybe I'm more of a rock and roll geek as much time as I spend explore, thinking about and captivated by it. :) You all don't even know how cool it is to see what is the most significant to people that were there.... its like with the "All The Young Dudes" stuff, I'd never heard of that and learning about it added to my appreciation of Bowie, rock and roll etc.

David Bowie 65th birthday: Why glam rock legend is content to have retired from the limelight
snip-
It is thought Bowie – real name David Robert Jones – has not written a new song in nine years.
“He’s no longer interested,” says a friend. “His days are very sedate. He reads a lot, he watches movies, he paints. He picks up his daughter from school most days and has a great air of contentment.
“He has nothing to prove and living a normal, functioning life for the first time is – to him – very exotic and attractive.
“Nobody worked and played harder than David. He feels he’s earned the right to do exactly as he pleases.” Last month lost footage of Bowie performing The Jean Genie on Top Of The Pops resurfaced after 38 years.
While he champions new bands like Arcade Fire and TV On The Radio and enjoys classical concerts at New York’s Lincoln Center, music is no longer a critical part of his life. His first public piece of creative activity in a decade will be in October when he publishes Bowie Object, a typically quirky project.
He has chosen 100 significant objects from his life which will be photographed and accompanied by his text on why there were an influence. A Bowiesque twist on the autobiography concept.

Here's Bowie with Iggy on the Dinah Shore show. Its the second part of the interview and DS asked Iggy if he has influenced anyone and he says that he "helped wiped out the sixties." :)
But the cool part of this clip is when Bowie talks about what drew him to Iggy. I could be wrong, but it doesn't seem like many artists these days collaborate for the purpose creative exploration.

Piece of another interview with DS-- totally different David Bowie. Bowie talks about how he is inspired by other artists and his environment and what inspired him to be a musician.
At about 4:50 he talks about being a "self invented man", its interesting it really impressed upon me what he goes through continuously destructing and building himself up again.
He also talks about love.

Where are we now? David Bowie breaks decade of silence with new single on his 66th birthday
Music idol David Bowie broke years of silence and speculation today to release his first new single in a decade - with an album to follow.
His voice touches me more now than it has ever done. I guess because I'm now 51 and I can hear the wistfulness in his voice that only comes when we've reached a point in our life where we pause and reflect on what has passed and how little time there is left in comparison.

Still have my vinyl LPs....saw Bowie the summer of '74 on the Diamond Dogs tour....Jai lai(sp) fronton in Altamonte Springs...got tickets the day they went on sale. David Bowie to release new song 'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)' on February 26? (http://www.nme.com/news/david-bowie/68748) (nme.com)
David Bowie is seemingly set to release a brand new track titled 'The Stars (Are Out Tonight)' later this month.
The singer, who will release his first new album in 10 years in March, posted a message on his official Facebook page at midnight today (February 17). The post did not include any concrete release details, but instead simply listed the date '02.26.13' and the title of the song along with a new picture, which you can see at the top of the page.
