I turned the news on in the car yesterday and they were talking about Cecilia and how distraught her parents are. Then they had her father on and he talked for a long time but I had difficulty understanding him because of his accent. I kept hearing him say "her biological mother" and I am wondering if this is a custody dispute. Was Cecilia adopted or is her father remarried? has anybody heard anything about this?

I heard a report a few days ago where the question had been raised as to Cecilia's biological mother. The report stated that apparently Sherry is the biological mother. There is also a reference to this question in today's Toronto Sun paper.

hmmm. I wonder why it was even a question that Sherry was the mother. It is strange how they just throw that out there and don't offer any explanation.

It could just be that the father's english isn't very good, and he is using the wrong word to describe the mother. A lot of countries don't have the wife take the husband's last name, and that seems to confuse many Americans.

In one of the early articles, they made a comment over the house belonging to people with two different names (Weimin Zhang and Wen Xu). It was just the parents given names as opposed to their "Americanized" first names.

Cypros

That could certainly be it, Ghostwheel. Westerners have a difficult time with Asian names as it is.

CTV Newsnet: Interpol recruited to hunt for Cecilia Zhang*0:32

Interpol called to widen hunt for Cecilia Zhang

CTV.ca News Staff

As the search for a missing nine-year-old Toronto girl stretches past the one-month mark, investigators have asked police agencies from around the world to join the hunt for Cecilia Zhang.

Toronto police Sgt. Jim Muscat says a call has gone out to Interpol, which has notified its 181 member police agencies of the overnight events of Oct. 20, when the girl went missing from her bedroom in a northeast Toronto home.

"We have advised Interpol of information on the abducted child," Muscat told The Toronto Sun. "Interpol disperses the information to police agencies worldwide."

Police in Hong Kong, Britain and the U.S., are conducting background checks on a vareity of boarders who lived in the the Zhang family home, in case Cecilia was smuggled out of Canada.

According to Sgt. Muscat, the task of fidning everyone who lived at the suburban home is proving difficult.

"We are still trying to identify some of these people," Muscat said. "There were dozens of boarders and we haven't been able to track down some of them."

Alerts have also been issued to Canada Customs and Immigration, the RCMP and the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

In the meantime, Toronto task force officers are trying to obtain the licence plates from traffic on a toll highway north of Cecilia's home around 8 a.m. the morning she went missing. Police believe the route may be linked to a phone call made from a pay phone to Cecilia's parents, Raymond Zhang and Sherry Xu around that time.

Other than that phone call, Cecilia's parents and the police say they haven't had any communication with her abductors.

The task force has received about 1,100 tips from the public and the case has been featured on the popular U.S. TV crime program, America's Most Wanted. Anyone with information is still urged to call the Cecilia Toronto police task force at (416) 808-8390, or the Chinese hotline at (416) 808-3681.

A reward for Cecilia's safe return stands at $115,000.

Cecilia's family increases reward for abducted girl
Last Updated Fri, 23 Jan 2004 7:58:36

TORONTO - The parents of a girl kidnapped three months ago from her Toronto home say they're willing to remortgage their house to pay for a tip leading to her safe return.

Cecilia Zhang, 9, was taken from her bed in the middle of the night.

Police aren't certain what the motive was, but they now doubt it was money. No ransom demands have been made.

* BACKGROUNDER: Cecilia's abduction
Sgt. Jim Muscat

"This particular investigation right now is that of a classic mystery," said Toronto police Sgt. Jim Muscat. Since Cecilia's disappearance in October, investigators have received more than 2,000 calls. But they have no fresh leads, he said.

Until Thursday, the reward was $165,000. But several large donations totalling $100,000 were withdrawn at midnight Wednesday, as the Chinese New Year began.

Officials say those donations had always been pegged to expire Jan. 22 – largely as a way to encourage people to come forward with information as soon as possible.

* FROM DEC. 23, 2003: Police urge Cecilia's captors to deliver ransom demands

Right now, about $65,000 remains in a bank account ready to be paid to tipsters. But on Thursday, the girl's father was handing out new posters offering $200,000. Raymond Zhang said he's willing to refinance his mortgage to pay for the new reward himself.

Human remains found in Mississauga ravine; Police investigating

Presse Canadienne/Canadian Press/Broadcast News

TORONTO -- Police are refusing to comment on the possibility that the body of a young girl found in a ravine on Saturday, might be that of Cecelia Zhang, who has been missing for five months.

The nine-year-old girl was kidnapped at her home in October. Police searched for her both in Canada and in Asia without success.

Peel Regional Police are investigating after human remains were found in a wooded Mississauga ravine on Saturday.

Police say a hiker came upon the remains Saturday, behind a church.

Constable Craig Platt says they are working to figure out who the young girl is -- and how she died.

Sources say it appears the remains had been in the ravine for a long time.

Homicide detectives are working with the coroner's office to identify the body and the circumstances of the death.

No other details were immediately released.

TORONTO -- Police are working with a coroner today to identify the remains of a young girl found in a wooded ravine in Mississauga, west of Toronto.

Peel Regional Police say a hiker came upon the remains yesterday behind a church.

Constable Craig Platt says they are working to figure out who the young girl is -- and how she died.

Sources say it appears the remains had been in the ravine for a long time.

Police wouldn't comment on the possibility that the remains could be those of nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang.

She was taken from her parents' Toronto home in October.

The Toronto Police Service forensics unit has been called in to assist Peel police.

I must say I am very impressed with the detectives handling Cecilia's case. They have had quite a bit of information from the get go and not released it, for fear of jeapordizing this investigation.

This is something we speak of all the time, too much information being released too soon can jeapordize getting someone back, or in the case someone has done harm to them, getting justice.

It has now come to light that two calls were made to the family from phone booths. Fingerprints were lifted.

The family rented rooms to students. Took some time, but they eventually checked all former tenants....till they got a match, two matches it seems.

I pray their silence will mean a strong and sure case.
I doubt they would have arrested anyone, without solid proof.
Bless the LE in this case for a job well done!!

With HOPE and prayers for the family and for justice, Lanie

I am severely confused here.

March 27, 2004: A hiker tramping through a remote area of Mississauga comes across human skeletal remains

And police are still trying to track down where Cecilia was during those long months that she was missing. But they now believe she had only been dead a few days, prior to being found in a field behind a Mississauga church on March 27th.

snip...

“We don't have an exact determination of the amount of time that she would be alive after she was taken,” Catney concludes. “We know definitively that her eventual resting place, there was a period of at least 72 hours that we haven't accounted for yet, and we're working aggressively to try and determine her whereabouts during that period.”

Does this mean these people kept this poor girl ALIVE until they decided to finally kill her? If her remains were skeletal, wouldn't she have been decomposing for at least a couple of weeks? This was March when her body was dumped so it would have been very cold so wouldn't that have slowed down the process? I'm just notunderstanding how she was already reduced to justa skeleton if she had been alive up until a few days before her body was discovered.

If she wasn't killed right away, why would they keep her for so long, away from her family, if they weren't going after a ransom... why keep her alive for months and months if they intended to kill her? Sick sick sick. :(

My heart just aches for Cecilia and her parents. :(

I have no idea how long cecilia was alive after her abduction. I heard Skeletal remains - so I assumed she was in the park a long time. I guess we will have to wait for more details.

The hardest thing for me is hearing a woman was involved too. You would hope a woman would have compassion for a little girl.. but more and more we hear of these woman like 'wanda' from Elizabeth Smart's case and Karla Homolka etc.. etc...

Her killer has pled guilty. Apparently he did it for money so he could get married and remain in Canada, as his visa was about to expire. The comments from her parents are just heartbreaking. A truly senseless and terrible crime. She was such a beautiful little girl, with a bright future ahead of her.

He kidnapped the little girl to use her for ransom but he never did ask for ransom money did he?

I hate it when they give a murderer a plea bargain. This guy planned the kidnapping and he should have been charged with kidnapping and 1st degree murder. Instead he pleas and gets 2nd degree murder with a life sentence which doesn't mean life so he'll be out in a few years. Wonder what he will do then. If he couldn't go back to China because of the shame of not graduating from college then it would be impossible for him to go back after he has brought the shame of murdering a child on the heads of his family. Maybe he will commit suicide. To bad he didn't think of that when he was so shamed for failing in college.

So does LE still think that she was kept alive for months? Where would he have kept her and how would he have provided for her and himself. He wouldn't have been able to get a job if his visa had run out. He would have had to live somewhere. If he had decided not to ask for ransom money I can't think of any reason for him to have kept her alive.

Her poor parents are so broken that they couldn't even come to court for the sentencing. Breaks my heart. I hope that some day her dad will be able to forgive himself for not locking the window or having a security system on. The guilt will kill you if you can't work through it. Poor guy. Glad they got the killer anyway. This family deserved justice.

Police confirmed Sunday that the human remains found in a wooded ravine west of Toronto are those of nine-year-old Cecilia Zhang, who went missing last October.
The remains were spotted purely by chance by a hiker behind Mississauga's Church of the Croatian Martyrs at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, police said.

He can be out of prison in 15 yrs and then deported back to China for another trial...good. Fifteen years isn't nearly long enough for murdering that little girl.
