Authorities continue search for Citrus girl
By JUSTIN GEORGE and JORGE SANCHEZ
Published February 24, 2005
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CRYSTAL RIVER - The disappearance of a 9-year-old girl sparked a massive search Thursday involving scores of local and state authorities, bloodhounds, a helicopter and FBI agents.
Jessica Marie Lunsford was last seen about 10 p.m. Wednesday, when her paternal grandparents put her to bed at their home in Homosassa, a semirural village just south of Crystal River. The grandparents also slept in the home Wednesday night.
Authorities say Jessica's father, Mark, also lives there. He was out with a friend Wednesday night and returned home some time before 6 a.m. Thursday to find the mobile home's front door unlocked and his daughter gone.--->>
Searchers on foot and horseback scoured 2 square miles around her family's mobile home Thursday. On F, the search team will be bolstered by a special team from the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Jessica's mother, Angie Lunsford, lives in Ohio. FBI agents were unable to locate her Thursday, the sheriff said.
Authorities do not suspect that either of the parents or grandparents were responsible for the girl's disappearance, Dawsy said. He said he wouldn't rule anything out.
"We just know that she's gone," said Kristy Kirkland, Jessica's older cousin.
Mark Lunsford and his father, Archie, spent much of the day being interviewed at the Sheriff's Office while Archie's wife, Ruth, remained at the scene.
Mark Lunsford worked as a dump truck driver, according to his brother Paul, who lives in Springfield, Ohio. Jessica was the child of Mark Lunsford's second marriage. He has three older children by his first wife.
Mark Lunsford moved to Homosassa about two years ago to be near his aging parents, Archie and Ruth, and to provide his daughter with adequate child care while he worked, his brother said.--->>
Jessica's grandmother alerted authorities that Jessica was missing at 6:30 a.m. That call triggered calls to more than 2,000 area homes as part of a targeted "reverse 911" system. Sheriff's officials issued a national Missing Child Alert, but stopped short of seeking an Amber Alert. The latter alerts require law enforcement to describe what vehicle might have been used in an abduction or provide some evidence of danger, sheriff's spokeswoman Ronda Hemminger Evan said.
The search for Jessica included vested searchers on horseback and a Sheriff's Office helicopter buzzing overhead throughout the day. A large contingency of media, which included a reporter from Good Morning America, stood just inside police tape that blocked off most of the street. Locals began passing out fliers to help. Bloodhounds howled in the distance.
Neighbor Alvin Harris even brought Buford, his own bloodhound, to help the search. "He just needs something to sniff," said Harris' friend, Bernie Smith.--->>

Family of Missing Fla. Girl Appeals for Help
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New article:
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,148719,00.html
HOMOSASSA, Fla. — Heavy fog has hampered the search for a 9-year-old girl who vanished without a trace from her bedroom, officials said Friday.
Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said Friday the fog prevented his department from using its helicopter over night during its search for Jessica Marie Lunsford (search), who was last seen when her paternal grandparents put her to bed about 10 p.m. Wednesday.
Her father, Mark Lunsford, discovered her missing about 6 a.m. Thursday when he came home. He lives in the house with Jessica and his parents.
Dawsy said the girl, who was last seen wearing a nightgown, has no history of running away and the clothes she had laid out for school were still in place when she was discovered missing.

Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said the father has been ruled out as suspicious, after police confirmed his alibi that he spent the night with a "lady friend."
Dawsy refused to call the investigation an abduction because of a lack of evidence. At the same time, he said authorities are "working something above" a missing person's case.
What do you guys think that last line means?

Federal and Warren County law enforcement officials are searching today for the mother of a 9-year-old Florida girl who disappeared from her bedroom Wednesday and has been the focus of a national hunt.
Angie Lunsford, whose age is unknown but is believed to live in the Warren County area, is the mother of Jessica Marie Lunsford. Jessica was last seen about 10 p.m. Wednesday when her grandfather put her to bed in her Homosassa, Fla., bedroom.
Jessica disappeared without a trace. Thick fog this morning made it impossible for police to search for the child by helicopter, according to media reports.
Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford, discovered her missing about 6 a.m. Thursday.
According to media reports, there are no suspects at this point.

Searchers tighten hunt for Citrus girl
The sheriff says experts will refocus their attention on an area closer to Jessica Lunsford's home.By JORGE SANCHEZ, Times Staff Writer
Published March 1, 2005
HOMOSASSA - After hundreds of people have spent five fruitless days hunting for clues to explain the disappearance of 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford from her home last week, Citrus County's sheriff said Monday that he is narrowing the search.
Jeff Dawsy said that starting today, experts search teams will scour an area covering a three-quarter mile radius around the girl's home on Sonata Avenue. The search teams are organized by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and are trained in what the Dawsy described as "clue detection." The new group of about 20 searchers will use dogs and also be be paired with Citrus
deputies.--->>
Dawsy said that Jessica's father, Mark Allan Lunsford, passed a voice stress analyzer test administered by the Sheriff's Office, and then passed a polygraph examination administered by the FBI. Dawsy said the missing girl's grandfather, Archie Lunsford, also passed a voice stress test and is scheduled to take a polygraph test from the FBI in the next couple of days.--->>

I live within 15 miles of the 9 yr. old, Jessica Lunsford's, Homosassa home.
I was in Crystal River yesterday and had stopped at the the "Circle K" for an item. Just making conversation I pointed to the missing notice that was posted there and mentioned how fast I thought they had been on getting them out. The clerk said something about "there not being very fast to respond to the stores call to them." I paid for the item, and left scratching my head. What a surprise it was yesterday morning to read the headline news:
Hope raised, then dashed
By Amy Shannon
A glimmer of hope came to the Homosassa community searching for 9-year-old Jessica "Jessie" Marie Lunsford Sunday afternoon, only to be crossed off the list of viable leads hours later.
Citrus County Sheriff's spokeswoman Ronda Hemminger Evan said authorities obtained a surveillance tape from a clerk at Circle K on Cardinal Street and U.S. 19, showing a girl that "resembles Jessica."
Jessica's father, Mark Lunsford, reported his daughter missing at 6:30 a.m. Thursday soon after he came home from his girlfriend's home and noticed Jessica was not in her bed.

The case is a lot like that of Zachary Bernhardt who disappeared on September 11, 2000. Like Jessica, the eight-year-old Clearwater boy was home at bedtime, but gone by morning. As with Jessica's disappearance there was an all-out search, still Zachary remains missing

It sounds like they're getting close to breaking this case. Prayers she's being held somewhere and is still alive -
I just can't believe the Grandmother had anything to do with this, regardless of what it looked like her polygraph appeared like. I just can't believe it.

jeanna - I'd say they are V E R Y near breaking the case, from reading the news, especially this latest story.
They are looking for a "person of interest", and they know he knows they are looking for him, and he's got 48 hours to turn himself in for an interview or they're releasing his name publicly. Sounds to me like they're knocking on the door of finding out exactly what happened to her.

I can not understand how this man was even out of prison or jail? I believe that all sex offenders that have been arrested should stay in jail. some folks say they can be rehabilitated, hogwash, these kind of people are never rehabilitated and can not be, it is a mental illness. I am very sad to learn of this news, I had a bad feeling that this was not going to be good news when I learned of this man and saw a picture of him. how horrible sad that this beautiful childs life was cut short. our prayers are certainly with this family. what a beautiful angel that has been taken from their lives.

does anyone know if the state of florida knew if this man was living across the street from this child? does not the law require them to notify the state if they move to another location within the state? I really can't understand why these folks are ever let out when they do these types of crimes against small innocent children, or anyone for that matter. the law is not tough enough on these people! they should be held in a special facility for sex offenders only. this man is no more different than joe smith that abducted and murdered carla brushia. he most certainly deserves the death sentence.

such people have no interest in the law , they should be locked up and the key should be thrown away . Why does the law let them out to walk the streets and kill small children . they should be held in cages for they are Beasts . I pray that the good lord will stand by Jessica's Dad and her family , I feel so sad for Jessica and her young life just blown out , like a candle , and her family left behind to suffer her loss :(
To my knowledge Johnny Evander Couey was staying across the street from Jessica house. He was staying there for a couple of weeks. His residence was about two miles away. Even if Jessica's father had looked at the registered sex offender list for Citrus County there was know way of him knowing that this offender was that close to home.

If he and the grandparents had looked at the registry and seen the picture, they would have recognized him as he came and went across the street and when he came to Jessie's yard sale after Christmas. This might not have been enough to keep her safe, but a few words of warning from her dad when he showed up at the yard sale might have been enough to keep him away. Maybe not, but we will never know now and a beautiful young child is gone.

I'm really concerned about how this body was missed during the search.
From AOL News:
http://aolsvc.news.aol.com/news/article.adp?id=20050316012409990001&ncid=NWS00010000000001
Citrus County Sheriff Jeff Dawsy said Jessica's body was found during an overnight search in a densely wooded area, only about 150 yards from the home the girl shared with her father and grandparents.
150 yards - OK. So my first question, since I haven't followed this case closely, was did they use search dogs? Yes! But did they use cadavaver dogs? Again - it is unclear. Why does this keep happening. 150 is really close to where she disappeared, and here is the description of the search:
More than 100 police and volunteers, with help from bloodhounds and helicopters, searched the area about 60 miles north of Tampa for days following her disappearance. Jessica's family made emotional appeals on national television for her safe return.
I'm glad the family has her back, but this is such as truly senseless and horrible crime - OMG! Here is what the sheriff said in the same article:
Dawsy said Couey's half-sister and two other people were charged with obstruction for failing to notify police when Couey allegedly told them he had committed a crime. A fourth, the sheriff said, was picked up for questioning in the case but was charged only with failure to pay child support in an unrelated matter.
Dawsy called the four ''a bunch of druggies'' and said he would urge prosecutors not to allow them to plea-bargain for reduced sentences.
The three charged with obstruction were identified as Dorothy Dixon, 47, Couey's half-sister; Madie Secord, 27; and Matthew Dittrich, 31. All apparently lived in the home near the site where the little girl's body was found.
The sheriff declined to describe their exact relationship with Couey, but he has previously said that a relative paid for a bus ticket for Couey to leave Florida and that the suspect had told other people he expected the police would be looking for him.

You always think that when these things happen there is nothing that you can do to help...and there really isn't very much that can be done by us. The family is of modest means and they will have expenses......funeral, travel, probably be out of work to attend the trial.
On their official website there is a fund set up to help them..........and I see absolutely nothing at all wrong with this. She was everyone's "little girl" while we hoped and prayed for her safe return. I know I will contribute to this fund.

I posted my feelings about this on a different thread but I didn't want your post to go unanswered. I'm going to just copy & paste what I wrote:
I just can't stop thinking about how scared she must have been, and how much pain she might have endured. I wish I could get it out of my mind. I hope that Couey, (and anyone else that had even the slightest inkling of what he had done while lying for him), gets what he deserves. What that is ... there's nothing I can come up with that's enough punishment for what he's done. And then the dirty bastard goes to another state where he's in a bar smoking, boozing, & laughing it up. Forget everything I've ever said about being wishy-washy or on the fence. I think that the DP is necessary as long as evil like this exists. I have no degree of forgiveness for him, and I no longer feel guilty about it.

I am heart and soul sick to know what this innocent child went through before she died. What is wrong with people today? These horrific acts against our children seem to be spreading like a cancer out of control. Countless, nameless victims before the ones with faces like Polly,Danielle, Samantha, Elizabeth, Jessica and now Sarah to name a few. Our soceity should not suffer these fiends to live among us. Rehabilitation does not seem to work and there is no punishment harsh enough. What is the answer and how many mother's children have to suffer before we all take a stand and demand that this be stopped?!?

My husband can't even deal with listening to stories like this so it's a bit tough sometimes - not having someone here to vent to. That's one of the reasons that I like this site so much. At least we can talk through things, and try to find ways to cope & make changes.
I don't think that starvation is harsh enough for Couey. I don't even know what I would like to do to someone like him. I know we're supposed to look for forgiveness but I just can't. I don't know how these poor families deal with this, knowing that it was their beautiful child that had to suffer these fates that make us gasp when reading about them.
