Missing Texas Student Found After 7 Years
A Texas A&M University student who had been feared murdered after disappearing nearly seven years ago has been found alive and working in Kentucky, according to authorities.
Brandi Stahr went missing in October 1998, and police spent hours searching for her body in wooded areas. They questioned a serial rapist and murderer about her just hours before he was executed last year.
But a telephone tip led investigators to Florence, Ky., where Stahr has been working for the last five years at a Sam's Club, said Texas Ranger Frank Malinak.
"We thought we were dealing with a missing persons case," Malinak said. "But, in actuality, we were dealing with a person who did not want to be found and was in hiding."
Stahr, 27, hid from her family after she and her mother, Ann Dickenson, got into an argument over bad grades she received during her sophomore year and her family stopped paying for school.
For the last five years, Stahr worked under her real name, using her Social Security number. But police said they were unable to locate her that way because they don't have access to IRS records.
Dickenson and Stahr haven't reunited yet, but have talked on the phone. Stahr told her sister the family should not bother visiting, but her mother said nothing will stop her.
"We're going. I'm going. Even if I have to sit out in a (Sam's Club) parking lot to see her," Dickenson said.
Although Stahr committed no crime in her disappearance, investigators spent a lot of money and time looking for her, Malinak said.
"The responsible thing to do would have been to let someone know you're OK," Malinak said. "There are going to be people expending man-hours and effort, trying to find a missing person."

Makes me wonder how many cases could be solved if LE could track the use of their SS numbers? Seems like a basic tool that should be available in these cases. Glad she's safe! :)

I'm not sure what to say. I am glad that she is safe and sorry that the family had to suffer for 7 years, and that authorities had to waste time/energy/money looking for somebody who didn't want to be found. However, Brandi was an adult and had the right to disappear if she wanted. For that reason, I am glad that the LE are unable to access the IRS data. An adult should not HAVE to change their identity just to cut off ties with family.

I'm a little confused about this. My daughter is missing and LE tells me that her social security number has not been used. How do they know this, if they do not have access?
I'm so glad that this young lady is alive and well (?). I only pray that we have the same outcome in my daughters case. This is the outcome that all parents of missing children hope they will receive. It is so sad that she made the comment for her family not to bother coming to see her. I don't blame her Mom, I would see her no matter what. But she better hurry, she might bolt again. I would have already been there, probably the day they told me they found her. Oh, what I would give just to see my baby's beautiful face again!
Best of luck to Brandi and her family, it is time for healing to begin.

kholloway, I am sorry to hear about your daughter. I hope that you do get a result like this. How old is your daughter? What are the circumstances in which she disappeared? Are you actively involved in a search for her? Was any foul play suspected? Have you considered posting her here at WS, to help get her story out?

kholloway - sorry about your daughter and grand daughter. I was wondering did your granddaughter belong to the boyfriend your daughter was living with?
I am thinking that she did and that is why she was with him. Since that is basically the last place she is actually known to have been besides what her boyfriend saids, why can't they get a search warrant? They probably wouldn't find anything a year later. But if he did hurt them they might could use luminal (sp). I am sorry to bring that up and don't want to hurt you but I was just wondering.
Praying for your daughter and grand daughter for a safe return.

I'm not sure what to say either! You are correct in saying an adulst has the right to cut off ties with family, but at what expense. One phone call to a friend of a friend saying she was ok, but never going to contact the family again would have saved hours and hours of searching. This type of case doesn't help the ones that are actually missing! IMO, this adult woman acted very childish and selfish.
kholloway: I feel for you. I can't even imagine what you are going through. Keep up the hope as we all pray for a safe return for your daughter and grandchild!

It doesn't make sense that LE can't track with a SS number. Heck, we are known throughout the whole system by our social security number instead of our name. I think LE messed up on that particular case and didn't try and track Brandi by her SS number. That is just my little ole opinion.

Selfish is the word for this young lady's behavior. She did have the right to move where she wanted and not speak to her parents again but I don't think she had the right to put her parents through hell for 7 years plus the cost and time to LE.
She got mad at her parents because they got on her about her grades and weren't going to keep paying her college tution??!! If that is the only reason this gal decided to cut her parents off then she sounds like a spoiled brat.
