Matel Zachery Sanchez was last seen at 3 p.m., Wednesday in his family's home at 6912 SE Daphne Court. The search began a few hours later, after family members realized no one knew where he was.
Thursday morning, investigators put out a call for help finding a 2000 or newer green compact car that was seen on the street near Matel's home, around the time he disappeared. Milwaukie police officer Kevin Krebs said the car may be similar to a Ford Escort and investigators want to question the driver.
“We’re looking at all avenues, all leads, and exploring those fully... we don't know exactly what the vehicle's relationship is to this particular case,” Krebs said. “Time is always a factor that works against us. So time is of the essence.”

Car Towed From Scene Of Massive Search
June 30, 2005
- By KATU Web Staff
MILWAUKIE, Ore. - A new development has surfaced in the search for a missing 4-year-old boy, raising more questions about what might have happened to the child.
Zachary Sanchez Matel disappeared around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday from his home on Southeast 69th and Daphne, prompting a massive search effort.
On Thursday, an older model Nissan Sentra was towed away with a crime scene investigation van following behind.
Investigators have not revealed why they decided to take a closer look at the car, which the missing boy's grandmother had been driving on Wednesday.
As for the search for the young boy, an Army National Guard helicopter was being used to try to spot Matel from the air and the FBI was called in to help as well.
The Milwaukie Police Department has established a tip line for anyone with information concerning the boy's disappearance. The number is (503) 786-7492.
Matel was wearing black jeans, a short sleeve black and gray t-shirt and brown sandals. He is about 3 feet tall and weighs about 45 pounds.
Investigators are also asking anyone who may have seen a 2000-model year or newer green compact car in the area of the disappearance to call the tip line. The car may be similar to a Ford Escort.
All residents within a two-mile radius are encouraged to check their homes, vehicles and property for any sign of Matel.

Prayers are asked for a little 4 yr old boy that went missing in Milwaukee, OR on Wed. June 29th at 3:00pm. His mom took a shower and when she got out he was gone. The grandmother lives with them too and the mom thought he'd gone with his grandmother somewhere. But when the grandmother arrived at 6:30pm the boy was NOT with her.
A big search has been going on since then and is still going on. (My son is a Search & Rescue Explorer and was called to this search.... he is out of town though and did not go).
His name is Matel Zachery Sanchez and he is only 4 yrs old.
Please pray for his safe return. Time is of the essence!
They have no suspects at this time although they have not ruled anyone out.
They impounded the grandmother's car today. Although they said this is routine. (?)
They also said that a green car - model 2000 or newer - possibly a Ford Escort - was seen in the cul-de-sac around the time of the disappearance. They do not know if this car is involved or not.

Not to me either, Sharon. Grandparents used to be a child's security but now some grandparents are the druggies of the 60's who never gave it up and are totally OFF to start with. Prayers for the little boy.
We added Zachery to our front page. It took me a few minutes to change the database for the best way to include him. If anyone has additional info for contact information please let me know so I can update.

His first Name is Matel, they are not sure as to his middle name, and last name is Sanchez so the poster at NCMEC is correct.

Police getting tips in case of missing Milwaukie boy
7/1/2005
The Associated Press
MILWAUKIE, Ore. (AP) — Police said Friday they have received some 125 tips into the disappearance of a 4-year-old boy who vanished from his home and that those are the basis for many areas now being searched.
Matel Zachery Sanchez was last seen about 3 p.m. Wednesday, said Officer Kevin Krebs, spokesman for the Milwaukie Police Department.
Krebs asked for the public's help in tracking the car of Sanchez' grandmother, which was towed from the boy's house on Thursday. He said investigators are especially interested in where the car was Wednesday afternoon.
The tan 1992 Nissan Sentra was removed as a normal part of the investigation, he said.
Krebs declined to go into specifics of the investigation. "We haven't closed any doors. All avenues are open," he said.
Krebs said police have talked to all family members and that they are being cooperative.
There is a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the boy's location, he said.
From 60-70 people searched a 2-mile radius from the boy's home on Thursday. Krebs said he did not know for sure how many people were searching on Friday.
An Oregon Army National Guard helicopter in the search is equipped with microwave gear that can transmit what it sees to crews on the ground.
The boy, who lives with his mother and grandmother, was reported missing at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police initially thought Matel might be with the grandmother, who had gone on an errand, but the boy was not with her when she returned home at about 6:30 p.m.
His mother was in another room in the house when the grandmother went on the errand.
Krebs said an Amber Alert has not been issued because authorities lack some required information, such as details about a possible suspect.
Police said they would like to contact the owner of a small, green late-model sedan seen in the area.
"There is no one under suspicion," Krebs said. He added, however, that nothing is being ruled out.
The boy's parents have not released a statement.
A grid search was started at the home Wednesday and expanded outward to areas of forest and heavy underbrush near the boy's home.
Krebs said there had been no reports of suspicious characters in the neighborhood. The boy's father does not live in the home, but he went there Wednesday after being alerted to his son's disappearance.
Krebs said he was not aware of any custody issues involving the family.
Matel, who has a 1-year-old sister, was last seen wearing black jeans, a black-and-gray T-shirt and brown sandals. He's 3 feet tall and weighs 45 pounds.

We live in the Portland area here and this is a top news story.
(In fact, our son is a Search & Rescue Explorer and was called in to this search. He is out of town and was not abvailable to go. He'll go Sunday if they are still searching.) I may go and help search myself soon.
One of the news clips showed the grandmother arriving at the home getting out of her car and her shirt had what appeared to be blood all over the front of it. The t.v. news camera pointed this out and zoomed in on her shirt and said "take a look at that." But my husband noticed she had a cotton ball with tape on her arm as if she'd given blood and she'd bled from it. I haven't heard any more regarding this since. They have towed her car and CSI are analyzing it.
The police have said that they do not have any suspects at this time.
They are still looking for a green compact car - newer model - similar to a Ford Escort that was seen in the area around the time he went missing. Might be nothing - might be connected. They just don't know at this time.
Let's keep praying for this little guy. It breaks my heart.

They have now towed 2 additional family vehicles for analysis in this case - in addition to the grandmother's car they towed yesterday.
This is starting to smell of a familial crime.
The father gave a heartfelt plea in a press conference this afternoon. First time the family has spoken.
They have not released the name of the grandmother but I heard on our local news yesterday that she is 42 yrs old.
Also, one of the 2 additional family cars they towed today resembles the green car of interest they've been mentioning the past 3 days. Interesting.
They are still searching for little Matel. I pray they find him.

Additional Reward Offered To Find Missing Boy
By KATU Web Staff
MILWAUKIE, Ore. - With the search for a 4-year-old Milwaukie boy stretching into the holiday weekend, an additional reward is being offered to help find the missing child.
The Carole Sund/Carrington Memorial Reward Foundation is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the safe return of 4-year-old Matal Zachary Sanchez, who disappeared Wednesday afternoon.
The new reward is in addition to a $1,000 reward being offered by Crime Stoppers. Anyone with information on the boy's disappearance is urged to call the tip line at (503) 786-7492.
Earlier on Friday, the boy's mother and stepfather issued a tearful plea for help finding the young boy.
Meanwhile, police are focusing their investigation on a car driven by the child's step-grandmother and are also asking the public to come forward if they have information about the whereabouts of the vehicle on the day the boy disappeared.
Matal Zachary Sanchez disappeared around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday from his home on Southeast 69th and Daphne, prompting a massive search effort that has so far not turned up any signs of the boy.
However, new developments over the course of the investigation raise questions about what might have happened to the boy.
On Thursday, an older model Nissan Sentra was towed away with a crime scene investigation van following behind.
"The grandmother took the car that afternoon and was gone in the car for a short period of time, a two hour time frame, and then came home," said Officer Kevin Krebs with the Milwaukie Police Department. "So we are trying to find out if the public can help us out in trying to determine the whereabouts of that car or the activity of that car during that time frame."
KATU has learned that the woman being referred to as Matal's "grandmother" is actually his step-grandmother, not his biological grandmother.
Police have interviewed the step-grandmother, who they say is being cooperative, but they are not commenting on red stains that were clearly visible on her shirt when she returned to the family home on Wednesday.
She is not considered a suspect, but police say they do want to know where her car was between 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday when the boy disappeared.
The car is described as a grey 1992 Nissan Sentra with Oregon license plate SNN 281. Anyone with information is urged to call the tip line at (503) 786-7492.
Also on Friday, a state police forensics team arrived at the boy's home and started to photograph the outside of the house, the yard and other vehicles. They also appeared to be taking measurements and doing other tests. Police would not comment on what exactly investigators were looking for.
Matal was wearing black jeans, a short sleeve black and gray t-shirt and brown sandals when he was last seen. He is about 3 feet tall and weighs about 45 pounds.

Nancy Grace focused on this case tonight for quite awhile.
This afternoon a park in a neighboring city of Gladstone was cordoned off and Search & Rescue Explorers searched that park for hours. Some were seen carrying shovels. They have now opened the park back up and are not saying why they chose that park to close off and search other than they have been "following up on a lot of tips" in this case.
I also just heard on our local news here in Oregon that the step-grandmother (her name is Chris Kauffman - not sure of exact spelling at this time) was reported to have been suicidal with the break-up of her marriage sometime ago. Didn't say exactly how long ago that was but seemed to imply it wasn't that long ago.
They truly seem to be focusing on the step-grandmother as time goes by.
They have returned the other 2 family vehicles they towed away earlier today - but have NOT returned the step-grandmother's car which was towed away yesterday.
They said that tomorrow the "Search & Rescue" effort may turn into a criminal investigation. Whatever that means. Usually they say it will be a "recovery" effort.
We'll see.
Wish my son was home to fill me in on the inside info (as much as he can) of the case! His team is out there in the thick of it. If the search is still on after the weekend he'll be involved.

Neighbors, volunteers and police searched into the evening Thursday for a 4-year-old boy who disappeared from his home Wednesday afternoon.
Aided by the FBI and a helicopter from the Oregon Army National Guard, teams performed a grid search Thursday, starting from the boy's house, said Officer Kevin Krebs, Milwaukie Police Department spokesman.
The search began Wednesday night. As the search progressed Thursday, the zone was expanded to a 2-mile radius, based on estimates of how far the boy might have wandered. "This is a very active boy," Krebs said. "He likes to get out. He likes to run around."
In a news conference held 24 hours after the boy disappeared, Krebs noted that "time is a very critical factor in this type of case."
At midday, police took custody of a tan 1991 Nissan Sentra the boy's grandmother had driven the day before, but Krebs said that was a normal part of the investigation.
Asked if the grandmother or other members of family were under suspicion, Krebs said: "We're not ruling out anything at this time." He added, "There is no one under suspicion."
Krebs said he was not aware of custody issues involving the family but confirmed that the father "is not in the home."
All family members have been interviewed, he said.

The tan, Nissan Sentra has remained parked near the home since Wednesday night and police decided to tow it from the scene Thursday to take a closer look, Krebs said.
“The grandmother is not at this time a suspect and the car removal was a normal part of the investigation,” he explained.
Reporters asked if they could talk to the boy's family during a news briefing Thursday morning, but Krebs said no, because it could interfere with the investigation. Names of Matel's mother, father and grandmother have not been released.
Also during that briefing, Krebs called on the public to help police find a second vehicle -- a 2000 or newer, green, compact car, possibly a Ford Escort -- that was also seen on the street near Matel's home around the time he disappeared.

I don't like the sound of this. Blood on the step-grandmother's shirt, still investigating her car when the other two have been released, and asking the public to let LE know if they saw her when she was out- it sure sounds like they suspect her of harming Matal. Prayers for him and the family.

The grandmother is 42 years old? OK, was her son and his wife and her children living with grandmother at her house or was grandmother living with her son, his wife and her children at their house? I can't imagine a 42 year old having to live with her child. That would be weird!

Sensitive issue here Lady E. She could have bi polar-disorder, schizophrenia, depression, paranoid delusions or any number of mental health problems. Or the medication they referred to could be for high B/P and she could now be having problems due to missing her meds and the stress. One of the articles did mention she suffered from depression after the divorce, but that is a fairly common problem esp. with middle aged women who find themselves divorced.
It is interesting that she had the stains on her blouse and a cotton ball on her arm. If she had had a Doctor's appt or have gone to a lab or hospital, that would be difficult for LE to confirm because they would probably need to get a warrant. It would be unusual for a person who is giving blood for a donation or blood tests to have very much blood on them after the blood draw, unless the person was on some type of blood thinners or had a medical condition which interfered with the bodys ability to clot. So possible, but not likely. And it could be difficult for the LE to verify a medical reason for this, cause they would need a warrant for the medical info.
lady-eowyn

So it could be antidepressants she was on...I just don't see why mentioning medication would have any bearing on the case unless the grandmother was missing too and needed medication to survive. The grandmother isn't missing is she? Did I miss something?
Sensitive issue here Lady E
I sure didn't mean to offend anyone by mentioning it...just wondering how the grandmother missing her medication could relate to the missing child
mysteriew

It could be that she has mental health issues.
Or the statement could have been in reference to a question about the step grandmother and whether she would talk to the media. Family could have replied something in relation to her health being worse and that she didn't take some of her meds. That type of thing.
Without knowing the context of the question and statement it is hard to determine what is meant by it.

When asked how investigators believe Matal Zachary Sanchez died, officer Kevin Krebs with the Milwaukie Police Department would only say "his cause of death was homicidal violence, an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow."
Matal has been missing since Wednesday. His mother said the last time she saw him was around 3 p.m. at their home in Milwaukie, some 25 miles away from where police found the body four days later.
“His body was found in a densely forested area on BLM land, approximately three or four miles southeast of Estacada... approximately 75 feet off a roadway," Krebs said.
"She will be charged with his death and she'll have an initial court appearance on Tuesday," Krebs said.

As the sun struggled against the clouds Saturday morning, people scattered throughout the garden rototilled and yanked weeds.
Loni Manley, breaking from her gladiolas and roses, expressed disbelief that Coffman could have had anything to do with the boy's disappearance.
Manley, who has had plots at the garden for eight years, said Coffman was a fixture at the community garden, and that Coffman frequently brought Matal with her to work on plots.
As Manley put it: "I remember the first time she brought him, and I said, 'You've got a big helper,' and she said, 'This is my grandson, Matal. He's going to help us in the garden today.' "
Coffman brought the boy to the garden often, Manley said, and even bought child-size garden tools for him. Manley said Coffman -- who had served as the garden association's president for about eight years -- seemed to dote on the boy, feeding him pieces of fresh fruit and vegetables.
"The only way I'm going to believe she did something harmful to him is if they have absolute proof," Manley said, just a few hours before the discovery of Matal's body was made public.

Coffman is the mother of the boy's stepfather. She had been living with the family in their Milwaukie home -- about 25 miles from where she then led police to the body.
Saturday, a medical examiner made a preliminary determination that the cause of the boy's death was "homicidal violence." But NO details have been released pending the results of today's autopsy.

The step-grandmother of a 4-year-old boy who had been missing for three days was charged with murder Saturday after leading police to his body in the wooded foothills of the Cascades.
"Naturally, people thought maybe he's with grandma," Krebs said. When Coffman returned without the child, police began to question her, Krebs said. He said Coffman's shirt was stained but declined to say if the substance was blood.
Police did not immediately say how the boy died but a medical investigator determined the cause of death was homicide.
"There is no indication that this was an accident," Krebs said.

What a horrible thing to have happen. What in the heck is wrong with that step grandmother. She lived with her son and daughter-in-law!!! I sincerely hope that her son wasn't a part of this. It wouldn't surprise me though. Poor little guy. I just wonder why she did that.
Well,Granny won't have to worry about having a place to live from now on. She'll have a permnant bed at Purdy...WA state woman's Correctional Center.

Ya Bobbie, she will. She's on suicide watch in jail. No wonder, as the coroner says now cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head.
They said she had health problems and was under stress. She was in charge of a community garden where everyone in the immediate area can rent a spot and grow what they want - flowers or food. She got caught pilfering approz $12,000 from their fund, which must have been on her mind.
She always took him with to work in the garden, and the man who was there tending his crop said the little boy used to run and skip up and down the pathways. A light hearted little guy.
He probably didn't want to go home and she snapped or something. Thank God they found him. She took him way out and put his body in a wooded forrest area several miles from the garden towards Estacada {in the country on the way up to Mt Hood}. It would have taken a hiker or forrest ranger to find him eventually if they had not convinced her to show him where he was.
I think he was full of beans - and a lot of fun to be around from looking at his photo.
Oh, Bobbie, Purdy is the Women'Correctional Facility up by Bremerton I think in Washington State. I think this gal will be sitting around, spending her days at Coffee Creek in Sherwood Or, right close to Portland. Actually a relatively new facility

A 4-year-old boy who police say was killed by his step-grandmother and left along a rural road in the foothills of the Cascade Range died from a blow to the head, authorities said Sunday.
An autopsy conducted a day after Christine Coffman led police to her step-grandson's body determined the cause of death to be blunt force head trauma, said Officer Kevin Krebs, a spokesman for the Milwaukie Police Department.
Krebs did not reveal how authorities believe the child was killed or how many times he had been struck. He also wouldn't say whether the boy was already dead when he was left in the woods, though he said the autopsy showed the child died from his injuries.

SAMMAMISH - The parents of a murdered Oregon boy thanked the public Wednesday for helping them through what they called, "a very, very difficult time."
And KOMO 4 News has learned Matal Sanchez's short life included time here in our area.
Susi Strom saw the pictures of 4-yearold Matal on the news, and she recognized him right away.
"He had these beautiful big chubby cheeks and a little droopy eye and beautiful big brown eyes," she describes.
Matal died in Oregon from a blow to the head.
His step-grandmother, Christine Coffman, is charged in his murder.
She appeared aloof in court at her arraignment Tuesday, where she was ordered held without bail.
It's the first Strom has seen or heard of Matal since 2001.
But that year, in his infancy, Matal spent weeks at a time with her family in their Sammamish home.
She says Matal's mother would leave the baby with a friend. And that friend brought Matal here.
"He'd come to us in diapers that hadn't been changed in three or four days, just full, just falling off of him. He had such terrible diaper rash, I took him to the doctor," Strom says.
Matal was just a year younger than Strom's youngest son, Jeremy. She would dress Matal in Jeremy's clothes and let him sleep in Jeremy's crib.
"Once you fed him and cleaned him up and got the diaper rash cleared up, he was such a happy, happy, healthy child," Strom says.
Strom says she tried to get the state to intervene, but Matal eventually wound up with his family in Oregon, and she never saw him again.
Wednesday, Matal's parents thanked searchers through a spokesman but otherwise are in seclusion.
Strom doesn't know how Matal spent the last three years, and she never met his step-grandmother.
But she's grieving for the boy who lived too short a life.
"He obviously wasn't appreciated," she says.

The Probable Cause affidavit explains why police arrested Christine Coffman, 43, who is charged with aggravated murder. It says she admitted killing Matal Sanchez on June 29 after driving him to a remote area in the woods outside Estacada.
The document says Coffman told police she took the boy from the home they shared with his mother and step-dad in Milwaukie and tried to strangle him three times.
Then, the affidavit says Coffman drove to a heavily wooded stretch of road about 25 miles away from Milwaukie "where she struck him with a rock, killing him," according to the Clackamas County sergeant who took her confession.
Laura Acevedo, and her husband, Daniel Acevedo, who is Coffman's son, have not spoken to the media since Coffman was arrested. Both were among six witness who testified before the grand jury that indicted Coffman, court records showed.

Acevedo told police that Coffman, her mother-in-law, brought Acevedo's 1-year-old daughter into the bathroom about 3 p.m. June 29 as Acevedo was getting ready to take a shower and said she was leaving to run errands. When Acevedo got out of the shower, Matal was missing, and a massive search was launched.
The boy's mother did not think Matal was with Coffman because his car seat was still at their Milwaukie home.
When Coffman arrived home about 6:20 p.m., she had red stains -- later determined to be blood -- and bark dust on her shirt. She told investigators she left home without Matal and took a five-mile walk in Gladstone, picking blackberries along the way. She said she later went to Willamette Falls Hospital to have blood drawn, bought raspberries at a fruit and vegetable store, bought gas and was pulled over by a police officer.
