Ok from what I gather, but I'm just putting pieces together here, they recognized her, called the police, when the police came and questioned the man who was with her, the waitress asked her what her name was, and she said it was Shasta Groene and started crying and said she wanted her daddy. This is what I just heard. It may not have been the waitress who asked her. Still waiting for more information.

Duncan had taken Shasta into the Denny's at 2:30 in the morning and that is probably why the waitress keyed on her. The waitress thought she recognized the child, checked the poster they had there, and called 911. When the cops came in, they asked the little girl who she is and she told them her name and that she wanted her Daddy...poor little kids.

The man was arrested and when they asked about her brother she said that he was "at the house" and he has also been found alive.

I am so happy that they found Shasta and Dylan. I really have all along felt that they were alive, however, I am in disbelief -- never thought that this would be yet another case involving a monster who preys on children.

How many children are going to have to be preyed upon, before WE do something or pressure our elected officals to protect our babies -- instead of the rights of a sex offender -- I truly believe that this is a mental illness, not something that you can habilitate (sp) for. Once they choose to commit a sexual offense (against our children) -- they need to not ever be put back on our streets. I can't imagine the hell that they babies saw -- and then endured. :furious:

Dylan has not been found - likely LE is trying to determine the home's location from Shasta. IMO, LE will then get warrant and go get him. I just hope he is still there.I am sure the FBI has already talked to her and if she could give them directions, they would already have him. It has been about six hours since she was discovered in Denny's and I am sure they didn't let the public know before they tried to locate the boy...if he is with someone else, that person would have notice to flee if he heard this on the news.

Kootenai County Sheriff's Department spokesman Capt. Ben Wolfinger said Shasta was found in the company of a North Dakota man, who was taken into custody.

Shasta's brother, 9-year-old Dylan, has not been located, but her great aunt, Sue Torres, told CNN that "Shasta's probably going to take us to him."

"The only thing I really know is that a waitress at a Denny's restaurant in Coeur d'Alene recognized her."

Offense Background: On January 24, 1980, in the City of Tacoma, Washington, Joseph E. Duncan, age 16, committed a burglary of a neighbor's home. Duncan stole four handguns and ammunition. September 1994: Duncan was released on parole after serving 14 years in prison.



April 1997: Duncan was returned to prison for violating his parole.



July 14, 2000: Duncan was released from prison after completing his sentence. Duncan was released without parole or probation.



July 21, 2000: Duncan arrived in Fargo.



July 24, 2000: Duncan registered at the Fargo Police Department as a sex offender. The Fargo Police Department evaluated Duncan. Based on the history, profile, and the Minnesota Sex Offender Screening Tool-Revised score, Duncan was classified as a Level III sex offender.

Probably what he is referring to is psychological shock. It could take days weeks or years for her to recover. It will take time for her to realize and accept that she is safe. And she won't be able to deal what happened to her until she feels she is safe.

I know, LTU. After the initial elation, I am now going thru the emotional thoughts about what she has had to endure. Thinking about that is totally heartbreaking. Thinking about how she probably was frightened into submission of walking in there and NOT screaming out, "HELP ME I've been kidnapped".

I am finding it hard to believe he could have committed that crime all by himself.

I wonder if Duncan is a "friend of a friend" of Brenda & Mark & may have just been passing through Cd'A on his way back to the Tacoma area? Went to the bbq with this other person & found he liked Shasta & Dylan. Maybe this other person had something against Brenda & Mark & Duncan wanted the kids. I think the other murderer has Dylan nearby. I think they've been hiding in plain sight.

They said the perp was calm and cool, and he and Shasta split an appetizer dish. They also went to the restroom, with Shasta going into the women's restroom by herself. The waitress and manager couldn't find the flyer, so they called police anyways. The manager instructed the staff not to let them out, and the waitstaff stalled them until police arrived. They also said that Shasta was crying in the car for her daddy, and she was also talking about Slade.

Just found out that a five year old girl went missing from Chisholm MN on June 14, 2003 (this year). I did not even know until today that this happened. So, I tried to figure out what I was doing that day, since I'm always afraid of getting accused when something like this happens. According to my Quicken entries that was the day that I went to watch a couple of my co-workers jump out of an airplane (tandem jumps). I had purchased a package of depends (adult diapers) as a joke, and some 8mm tapes for my camcorder that morning. I also Went shopping that day at Cashwise and bought over a $100 worth of food, (a major grocery shopping trip) but when I checked my file for these receipts to see what time I was at Cash Wise (the grocery store) I discovered the receipts were missing. Makes me wonder. I'm going to have to look for them some more. You might say that finding out about the girl missing is the proverbial last straw. Because of all the other recent incidents in the news lately, especially regarding missing people and the resulting intensification of the persecution of sex offenders, I've decided to start this blog as a sort of check and balance of where I am. This is for my own safety. I figure it is just a matter of time before I am falsely accused of some crime or another. I already had the police at my door telling me some women down town were waving my picture around (that they printed from the internet) accusing me of harassing them for a date (a part of town I’ve never been to and women I never heard of, but the police acted as if they knew it was me). The visit was very intimidating and not friendly. I was "warned" that I was being watched as a known sex offender. The visit made me consult an attorney for advice; he told me there was nothing I could do unless charges were filed. Today (yesterday actually, right now it is 1:23 am Sunday) I stayed home mostly, played Delta Force on-line and dinked around. I went to Hornbaucker’s and bought a few groceries and some B-day cards for some friends (Dave and Dee). I got a call from my boss at 4:40. He wanted to tell me about a new technology he'd been playing around with that could make several of the projects I've been involved with simpler to implement (MS ISA). I had a chef salad for lunch and cheese and summer sausage later for a snack in leu of dinner.
Then did a search on the girl he is referring to -- she has not been found -- I hope they are checking this out!!!! This guy is sick!!!

I could be wrong, but I don't think sex offenders who are loners form bonds with other sex offenders when they "meet up." If he met up with someone, it was more likely online than in the physical sense.

It makes sense, I think he was passing through and I think he was at that BBQ. Maybe Lutner can shine some light on that, maybe he saw him.

The times make sense too, if he's in school, or works for a University, THAT week was the week most schools started summer session. So if he was hanging around CDA that weekend, it would have been when he was heading home after going on the summer break. Makes total sense.

Chris Donlan, a teen who was at the Denny's restaurant on 4th Avenue off Interstate 90 shortly before 2 a.m. with four friends, spotted a girl with Forty-two-year-old Joseph Edward Duncan III of Fargo, North Dakota, getting out of a vehicle and remarked that the girl looked like Shasta Groene to his friend Nick. The two young men walked past the two inside the restaurant and then looked at a picture of Shasta in a trade magazine and confirmed it was Shasta.

Chris and Nick took down the vehicle's license plate number, confirmed her identity with the wait staff and then called police to alert them. A few minutes later police officers arrived on the scene and asked Duncan outside to speak with him while another officer spoke to Shasta. Authorities subsequently arrested Duncan and took Shasta Groene to the Kootenai Medical Center for treatment and observation. Shasta's family all went to KMC to be with her with the exception of her father Steve, who was in Ellensburg when he got the word that Shasta had been found. He is currently heading home to Coeur d'Alene to see her.

I am not sure if this is the same court date, but earlier on Fox they said that he had missed a court date May 16th, and that was the same day the bodies were found.

I could be wrong, but I don't think sex offenders who are loners form bonds with other sex offenders when they "meet up." If he met up with someone, it was more likely online than in the physical sense.

Dean Swartzmiller was living with another sex offender named Evert. They met in prison and after getting together, presented themselves to others as father and son. They both liked the same age group of boys. Family and other sex offenders are about the only ones who will associate with these guys, unless they have a really smooth line.

On his blog, Duncan mentioned he checked the police logs and found a missing boy. He related that to a paranoid feeling he had when he thought a police officer paid too much attention to him. A later entry he said there was nothing was in the news about the boy, so they must have found him.
I don't know of anywhere that you can check the police logs.

Most people who have been in prison for sex offenses keep it secret when they meet new people outside the joint. Since this guy discharged his sentence and had no parole, then he could have associated with guys from prison, but most parolees cannot associate with their prison buddies. This guy was a loner from most of the reports though.

I pray to God that this child is not put into further trauma by being placed with the state instead of into the loving arms of her father that she is asking for!

They would have to have reason to feel that Shasta would be harmed if she was given to her father, and so far I haven't heard anything that against the father that would indicate any possibility of harm coming to her.

He is saying how traumatized the little girl is so they have to proceed slowly, etc. So now the Fox anchors are asking him the same questions we are asking, how is he driving a stolen vehicle, getting out on bond, and walking into a Denny's like Joe Citizen in the company of a little girl everyone is looking for? The waitress is actually the person who heard that remark from her about her brother, not Wolfinger. By the way, Duncan is now 42 and not 37. Can they get anything right? Even now Adam Housely is reporting that the statement about the brother being in heaven is the reason they are presuming the child dead, when all these months they have not been willing to say that despite the two children last being seen at that horrendous crime scene.

It just seems extremely odd that he is willing to say they presume Dylan is dead from this same traumatized little girl's remark, and if she is alive and seemingly unharmed, how come? This is indeed a strange situation, I have to say! I have a feeling they got more info from Duncan than they are saying, but then again, a savvy criminal would lawyer up and not say a word.

There is also a telephone conversation with Chris Donlan describing the suspect and Shasta at the Denny's in CDA. A reporter at the hospital also says Vance Groene stated that Shasta was sedated. Another report that LE stated that the suspect was NOT KNOWN to them during the investigation, and his connection to the Groene family was unclear.

If the guy's involved in LeeAnna Warner's disappearance, I hope it would come out during questioning. He's suddenly become the number one suspect in my eyes.

Wayne, what I wonder- many serial rapists/killers keep suveniors and/or written or photographic records of their deeds. My thought was- is Duncan recording attacks he has made in a way that he thinks will not incriminate him. And possibly also setting up a defense for himself in case he is caught. I know someone is going to say that he could have turned her over to LE in N.D. but this is a man who does not like or trust LE. Chris Donlan, a teen who was at the Denny's restaurant on 4th Avenue off Interstate 90 shortly before 2 a.m. with four friends, spotted a girl with Forty-two-year-old Joseph Edward Duncan III of Fargo, North Dakota, getting out of a vehicle and remarked that the girl looked like Shasta Groene to his friend Nick. The two young men walked past the two inside the restaurant and then looked at a picture of Shasta in a trade magazine and confirmed it was Shasta.

Chris and Nick took down the vehicle's license plate number, confirmed her identity with the wait staff and then called police to alert them. A few minutes later police officers arrived on the scene and asked Duncan outside to speak with him while another officer spoke to Shasta. Authorities subsequently arrested Duncan and took Shasta Groene to the Kootenai Medical Center for treatment and observation. Shasta's family all went to KMC to be with her with the exception of her father Steve, who was in Ellensburg when he got the word that Shasta had been found. He is currently heading home to Coeur d'Alene to see her.

Isn't it wonderful, JerseyGirl? I am ecstatic one moment and crying the next, everytime I hear that DJ may no longer be alive. I pray to God that he is alive. I feel that Shasta and Dylan had this bond, akin to twins, as they were so close to one another. Oh God, please let him be found alive!I haven't read enough yet to know what might be the scenario regarding Dylan but I am keeping my fingers crossed. Right now, I am so baffled about what poor little Shasta might have seen and experienced over the past six weeks. I hope that by some miracle, she will be able to become whole someday, and put all of this behind her. Needless to say, it will be a long, long road but hopefully time will help her to heal.

I was just sitting here and thinking about this. What if Duncan did not commit the murders/kidnapings. What if the Shasta was given/sold/handed over to him and he was taking her home? I know someone is going to say that he could have turned her over to LE in N.D. but this is a man who does not like or trust LE. What if he just thought he would take her to the area and turn her loose, as Steve had asked in his broadcast? Why else would he have taken the chance of going back there so close to her home? Unless he was taking her to where he was sure she would be recognised.

I am just theorizing (guessing) but I can think of no other reason for him to go there. He has been somewhere safe for over a month, but he goes to Coeur d'Alene for some reason. The one place in the world where Shasta would be most likely to be recognized.

Has anyone heard anything concrete about whether Duncan was just passing through, or whether he was staying somewhere in Coeur d'Alene?

Yeah, not to be "downer" in this time of great joy that the child has been found BUT I think the most that can be said is that they aren't dead - and that they may be young enough that with sufficient support and alot of therapy they may have a chance at living someday......
