At the press conference, LE has confirmed that Shasta is at the hospital, Steve is on his way, but Dylan is still missing. LE would not comment on a possible location. All members who had the day off have been called in and the investigation is moving ahead full speed !!!

Dylan is in huge danger right now.... because Shasta is safe. This is really a nightmare
The news correspondent on Krem was just saying that Dylan had been found but the anchor back at the station corrected her saying that the authorities are denying that he has been found.
Wolfinger says that they believe DJ is deceased!

The sheriff just said that they doubt Dylan is alive. It is kind of strange that he is relying on just one statement from the little girl that her brother is in heaven to determine that the boy is dead, isn't it? Seems like LE has no other details at all, not from Duncan and not from the child. But that one statement is enough to decide the boy is dead? They even told the family they believe Dylan is dead. It seems extremely odd that the little girl would be alive to tell the whole story, they both escaped that horrific crime scene, and yet Dylan died since then?
I think just her remark about her brother being in heaven cannot be enough to make such a declaration. There must be more they are not saying, or would they not just say, it is still under investigation?

Coeur d'Alene Press
Shasta was found in the company of 42 y/o Joseph Edward Duncan of Fargo, North Dakota.
As they were sitting at a table an alert waitress named Amber recognized Shasta and immediately informed her manager. The manager called 911. Duncan was arrested on unrelated warrants and kidnapping charges and was booked into Kootenai County Jail
Shasta has been taken to the Kootenai Medical Center for a health check up, and remains there at this hour.
It has also been reported but un-confirmed that Dylan was found at a house in the area. With this comming after the news conference, is Dylan alive? Or has his body been recovered?

Another news conference coming up on FOX ref Shasta and Dylan. One announcement was in 10 minutes, but another announcer said at the top of the hour. Supposed to be one from the kidnapper's home state also, I believe they said North Dakota.
I wonder why the kidnapper returned to Couer de Alene for this weekend when family was supposed to be gathering for a service for the spreading of Shasta's mother and brother's ashes who were murdered. I don't think the kidnapper planned on attending that. I wonder if he was planning to meet someone else who would be in town this weekend?
Good questions, Leigh.
It was reported that Steve was out of town when Shasta was found. I wonder if he was playing a gig out of town, with his band.
Forgot to tell you Leigh the press conf out of Fargo is coming up in a couple minutes at 1:30 PDT.
Next after that is 2pm PDT, from the KC Sheriff's dept.

Geraldo was on FOX earlier this morning and reported that the father was driving across Washington state to Couer de Alene to be with his daughter, so he was in Western Washington. Geraldo said "Washington is a big wide state." I could be wrong but I think Geraldo said he was in Tacoma. Interesting that the kidnapper originally was from Tacoma too and had his first arrest in Tacoma.
I still think that the kidnapper returned to the Couer de Alene area with Shasta to meet up with someone he knew was going to be in town over the long weekend. Probably someone he knew who was going to be at the services for the scattering of the ashes of the murder victims that was to take place this weekend. I don't think that kidnapper was hanging around northern Idaho that close to the crime scene all this time.
It's interesting about the first thing that Shasta said to the waitress when she was "found". She started crying and said, "I want to see my Daddy." Maybe she just recognized her own town and knew she was back at home where her Daddy lived.
I hope we get more details and information soon.

Actually it kind of fits. What if Lutner was involved with the killings. But he couldn't kill the little ones or his anger rush ran out before he killed them. So he puts them into his car/truck and takes off with them. But now he has the problem of what to do with them. What if he is related to Duncan? Or Duncan is somehow a family friend. He is aware of Duncan's sex offense problems. So he takes off for Duncan's with the kids. He drops them off and returns to Idaho, because he is aware that LE is looking for him. Duncan being the type of guy he is, with his hatred of LE- he is not going to be likely to turn Lutner in. And by taking the kids there Lutner figures that Duncan won't turn him in, because now he is involved. So Duncan hides Shasta and maybe Dylan too.
But Lutner gets arrested and doesn't get out. Duncan gets tired of keeping the kids. He has already missed his own court date, so he knows he is already in big trouble. So he drives to Idaho with the intention of dropping Shasta off where she will be found and returned to her father. With his distrust of LE and with his involvement he is not going to take her to them.
Possible he planned on leaving Shasta in Denny's, after he rested up from his drive. I am not sure what has happened to Dylan. But I feel that this is the only scenario that fits with what we know about the individuals and the situation.

More likely the kids ran into the woods like some of us originally thought and the perp was camping out there and 'rescued' them.

I don't even know who Lutner is, but Fargo, ND is over 1000 miles away from Coeur D'Alene, so he didn't just "drop them off" there. On top of that, it appears Duncan had been on the move since his court date on 4/15. This was his timeline:
4-15-05, Becker Co MN, Court appearance, bail set at $15K cash, posted it
4-15-05, St Paul MN, Rented red 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee, due back 4-20
4-18/22-05, Becker Co MN, Failed to report to probation officer during week
4-27-05, Newton Co MO, License tags stolen
5-4-05, St Paul MN, Red 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee reported stolen
5-1/15-05, Bighorn Canyon WY Natl Park, Park rangers find discarded car tag in/near dumpster
5-6-05, Fargo ND, Arrest warrant issued for Duncan--failure to report
5-13-05, website, Duncan's blog entry about turning self in, may die first, etc
5-15-05, Coeur D'Alene ID BBQ held, last day kids seen
5-16-05 Becker Co MN, Duncan missed court date
5-16-05 Coeur D'Alene ID, Bodies found
And one more piece of logic... if Duncan were just trying to drop off a child, he didn't need to go in there with her and risk someone identifying him later. He could just have dropped her off anyplace.

Cowgirl right at the beginning, LE identified a POI that they were searching for. They didn't find him for several days. They were looking for him because he had attended the BBQ that the Groene family had that Sun. And he was the last person known to have seen the Groene family. Also his truck was found in the neighbors drive. When he returned, he supposedly stated that he had been out of state and had not been aware they were looking for him. (I thought he said he was visiting family, but I am not certain of that). Lutner was arrested on other charges and has been in jail since that time. So my theory is as valid as any other theory out there by people who have been trying to follow the story from the beginning. Just theories. But based on the circumstances and history of the case (or as much of the history and circumstances as we have been able to get on the case). Your timeline for Duncan while somewhat accurate, still does not invalidate my theory. Try adding in the date that LE took Lutner into custody.

Robert Lutner was taken into custody on 05-19-05.
Deputies are waiting to find out what information Robert Roy Lutner, 33, Hayden, has on the murders and missing children. Lutner was seen at the home sometime Sunday night and is the only person of interest in the case. He contacted authorities Wednesday afternoon and was still being interviewed by authorities that night.
Earlier Wednesday, authorities said Lutner, who has been on probation for unemployment insurance fraud since December 2003, told his supervising officer in Coeur d'Alene he was "too distraught" to talk with authorities. He planned to drive to Emmett, near Boise, to visit his father, who had suffered a stroke recently.
Wolfinger said he was not sure exactly what Lutner was distraught over.
"This," Wolfinger said, pointing to the crime scene. "His dad. I don't know."
Under the conditions of his probation, authorities said Lutner is not allowed to leave the five-county area without permission.
"He had arranged a meeting last (Tuesday) night. He failed to show up last night, and that is a probation violation since he failed to show up for a meeting," said Teresa Jones, Department of Correction spokeswoman. "He has made contact with a probation officer today (Wednesday) and has been put in touch with law enforcement."
Lutner, a former neighbor characterized as a friend of the Groene family, has a criminal history ranging from petty theft to driving offenses to drug charges.

That was one of the reasons they are keeping her overnight at the medical center. They want to test her for parasites like giardia (sp?).

Poor innocent Shasta. I'm sure she will be the key to this horriffic tragedy. I hope her brother is still alive. She will need lots of support and nuturing to feel safe again.
I know. My heart just aches for what she's been through.
The outpouring of support in CDA has been wonderful though. Lot of gifts --- toys, stuffed animals, balloons were being delivered to the CDA Med Center. So many that they asked that no more be delivered as they said they had no more room. But, the sweet little kids were taking in their personal stuffed animals for her to have something to bring her some joy. Some lady that handmakes beautiful stuffed bears hand delivered two of those for Shasta to cuddle.
The lady I talked about earlier that took in the softest blanket she'd ever felt, that she was drawn to purchase a couple of days ago and didn't know why. Today she took that in for Shasta to be able to wrap herself in something brand new, soft and cuddly.
Those stories just make the tears flow freely and the heart feel good, even while crying for Dylan at the same time.
God bless all the thoughtful people, who are trying to comfort this hurting little child.
Eta: My crying for Dylan is only because I keep hearing reports that he is assumed deceased and seeing his adorable little face being shown. I still hold out hope and continue to pray for him to be found alive.

Lutner I think was visiting family or something and I thought it was still in Idaho but was five hours away. Does this make sense?
I have to wonder if Duncan was simply an acquantaince that happened to be stopping in Coeur d'Alene that weekend and met up with Lutner somehow then later ended up at the Groenes. I guess we will find out more from poor little Shasta and maybe some connection can be drawn between Lutner and Duncan.
But does anyone here think Duncan killed the family? Seems there are still some pieces missing.
Could this guy have been after Slade? He seems to have a thing for boys that age.

Yes, he told LE that he was visiting his father in Boise. And that he was too upset to return. LE stated at that time that they weren't sure if he was upset about the murders or about his father. I believe I also remember a statement later that Lutner's girlfriend said that he hadn't been aware that LE was looking for him. The murders were committed between the 05-15 and 05-16. Lutner turned himself in on 05-19. So he was out of contact for a period of about 3-4 days. Duncan at that time had already been taking measures to run from his trial.
It is possible that Duncan was there that night and participated in the killings. (He probably needed money).
But something led LE to get that search warrant for his home, and they would have had to give a judge sufficent probable cause to get him to issue the warrant.
I am also considering the fact that Shasta said that Dylan was back at the house.

See, I don't think he was in CDA, but coming through here. We'll find out but it would be hard to believe they were there the whole time. Shasta would have been recognized. Why did he steal plates from a car in MO? I think he was around Wyoming or Yellowstone or wherever they said they found that car tag. Then it's 4th of July weekend so he decides to head home to Tacoma. Arrogance gets the best of him and he wants to see if he can fool LE, which he seems to have a thing for. It's a taunting thing. If he had NOT been caught, it would have given him such huge gratification because he waltzed right in front of them where she should have been recognized. Thank God it didn't happen this way. The tag found in Wyoming was the one from the car keys, that the rental company puts on there. At least, that was my understanding at the time I read it. I think he ditched the tag after it would have been obvious that the car was stolen.

See, that's what I thought too, like the little plastic tag they write the information on. But why would someone save that if they found it? I would just toss it. On another thread they were talking about the plates, which would stand out surely. Maybe that's what they meant.

Me too...................I've already said this earlier, but I am hoping that what we heard Wolfinger say about presuming Dylan to be dead was a police tactic...perhaps to keep the accomplice in the area (?) I know, far-fetched, but one can hope.
With the way that LE has kept information to themselves in this case, it would not surprise me if this is true. Don't alarm whomever has Dylan and hope he can be apprehended quickly.

Remains have been located in Western Montana that are being tested for a match to Dylan, per FOX bulletin a few minutes ago.

I don't have a clue what the information was the made LE say they believe he is dead, but I hope these remains are not Dylan's.

Leigh, my understanding is that Steve was in Ellensberg, WA., which is a few hours west of here.
_______
Steve was in Tacoma but as soon as he heard about Shasta being found I heard him say he headed back. The main freeway across Washington State goes through Ellensburg. Steve had talked with Geraldo on his cell phone while traveling through Ellensburg enroute back to Couer de Alene.

My feeling is that this creep committed all the murders and I think he was capable of doing it alone. The reasons I believe this is that almost the first thing Shasta said when found was "I want my daddy", or "I want to see my daddy." This seems like a clue to me that she knew her Mother was dead and probably witnessed her death. Shasta would have asked to see her Mother first because she lived with her Mother and only saw her Dad on visits. She would have asked for her Mother unless she knew her Mother was dead.
This creep's methods of operation match the way the family was murdered. He tied up the first victim, the 14-yr old boy in Tacoma. He raped him at gunpoint, then burned him (with cigarette lighter I've heard). The family in Couer de Alene was tied up, (tortured, I've heard sexually mutilated), and beaten to death.

I agree, Leigh. I also think the only thing that saved Shasta's life is the fact that this creep prefers little boys.
Did anyone see Marc Klaas on CNN (could be MSNBC)? He said all we need to do to get tougher laws passed on this was contact your senator and tell them to vote on a certain law and he gave a number. I didn't write it down, and am hoping someone else saw it and remembers it. If we could all contact our law makers, we could get this thing going when they get back to Washington.

I want that information too.....ENOUGH IS ENOUGH of these monsters coming after our little kids.....
I agree with Mark Lunsford. If they can put an ankle bracelet on Martha Stewart, then they can do it with these creeps. Frankly, I'd rather see drug dealers let out of prison to make room to KEEP these child sex offenders in prison for the rest of their lives.
If anyone has information on where/who we can write to, please share. Thanks.....

I just checked Marc Klaas's website (http://www.klaaskids.org) and did not see anything about a specific piece of legislation that is in the works. If you could figure out what show you saw him on when he said this, we could search transcripts. Any idea what time of day it was? That would help narrow it down some, even if you aren't sure if it was CNN or MSNBC.

Someone on the board yesterday had a good idea. Let the white collar offenders out wearing a bracelet, to make room for keeping the sex offenders in jail.

It was on between 9am and 10am (Ak time), that would be 1pm and 2pm EST. I know because I was watching DaySide (Fox) and they were saying nothing, so I kept switching back and forth between MSNBC and CNN. I'm thinking it must have been CNN because MSNBC was talking about Natalee Holloway. (or vice-versa, I'm sorry I'm confused :) )

Thanks for the info. I looked at the listings for CNN between 1pm and 2pm EST yesterday, and the show that was on then should have been "Live From ..." I couldn't find any mention of Marc Klaas in yesterday's transcript for that show, so I tried searching some of the transcripts of other shows that aired yesterday. Nothing on Marc so far. Here's the page with all of yesterday's CNN transcripts if anyone else would like to have a go: http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/2005.07.04.html
Click "Return to transcripts main page" if you want to search transcripts for any other day.
