Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks
From correspondents in New Orleans
05sep05
EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.
Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.
When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.
Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."
With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"
And this man makes how much money????? What was it a 12' boat??? Geez!

He wasnt trying to help. You don't bring your very own personal photographer when all you want to do is help. He was unprepared to help but he was prepared enough to have his photographer to make sure the world saw what a great caring helping guy he is. Not buying it. He was there for personal gain.

The guy is in movies. Movie stars and directors always have cameras with them. It is possible he is sincere. Why not give him the benefit of the doubt?
He does give lots of money. He is an artist, a director, a film producer, if he takes his own boat and camera, perhaps he has the intention of offering something in addition to the rescue effort through his art that will benefit others later on.
Unless you are omniscient, (and few of us are) it is impossible to know what is in someone else's heart, especially if you do not know them personally or hang out with them over time.

People who try to help and are unprepared, then need to be rescued themselves.
I vote for good intentions, but not from the heart, you don't bring photographer with you if your intentions are really what you say they are.
The guy is not that bright, he could have done a bit more by comforting victims, instead of almost becoming one himself.

I'm usually not one to criticize any efforts - but this was pure publicity seeking, not help. Going there on an empty boat, or one loaded with supplies is helping (even with a single photographer). Going there on a full boat is just an obnoxious publicity stunt, since they can't really rescue much of anyone at all - no room on the boat (even if it did stop leaking). That's really pretty low, using a situation like this for your own benefit, without helping anyone.
I love that instead of getting his desired photo-op, he gets laughed at for being so incompetent he can't even manage the photo-op.

Exactly! It was the full boat that sealed it for me, lol! You cannot rescue people in a boat full of your people, duh! It was PR, and probably another chance to attack Bush (for his lack of response) only to barely be able to save himself. And the personal photog, of course. I thought maybe he wanted pics of the scene, but he could have taken his own camera for that.

I dont really give a rats *ss what his motivation was, IF he would have been successful and taken just ONE child out of that h*ll hole, I would be very gratefull. Do you think the people in need of rescue really give a crap who is doing the rescuing and what their motivation is?

If he had saved a child, that would have been great. I have the same question about all this glorifying of the reporters who cried beside dying people. I just can't imagine a grown man with a van or boat or motorcoach or satellite truck crying over a dying baby and NOT picking it up and putting it into whatever means of transportation he had and getting out of there to somewhere he could find a doctor to help it. People were outraged that a national guardsman was dragging a dog by a leash - nobody was outraged that Geraldo or whoever else reported on but didn't take a dying person into their own able and capable transportation and try to get them somewhere where there was a doctor. I'm hoping someone can explain that to me.

NOW THIS DELIGHTED & SATISFIED ME! If a businessman can do this, why couldn't Bad Boy Sean with his bucks have done this? For that matter, how come a lot of people with bucks haven't done this?
<DIV> NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 5, 2005 — Fed up with what he says is the government's slow response in rescuing residents along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, a California businessman is taking action.
Over the weekend, David Perez launched an effort to evacuate New Orleans — on his own. Using $200,000, Perez chartered a Boeing 737. Upon landing in Louisiana, he unloaded much-needed supplies he had purchased at a local Costco and later reloaded the plane with 86 weary hurricane victims. if (navigator.userAgent.indexOf("MSIE") != -1) { document.write("<div style=\"float:left;\">"); } else if (navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Mozilla") > -1) { document.write(""); }
SNIP:
"These people need to have their kids in school and get their feet back on the ground," Perez said. "They have gone through devastation."
The group headed to San Diego, where Perez has organized a contingent of local families to open up their hearts and homes as temporary shelters.
Perez was there for every step of the journey, handing out boarding passes and helping with luggage. When the plane touched down in San Diego, tears of devastation finally turned to tears of joy.

If he wanted to help, he'd go in there with room to take people out, or supplies in. He wasn't there to help. It's not a question of motivations, it's a question of actions. He wasn't there to help - a full boat of people into New Orleans proves that.

How did the idea come that he was there to rescue people? Did he make it known he was going to be rescuing people? Or was that the assumption by whomever took the photos and such? Because my first thought was he was probably there to do a documentary since he's a movie director.

I saw the television interview on CNN and he was there with a resident of New Orleans who was a historian. That person was going along with Sean Penn to take photos and notes and whatever else it is that historians do. Not sure if that was the same person that the Drudge Report was labeling as Sean Penn's personal photographer.
The interview also showed that Sean Penn was able to help a fair number of people get to safety because his boat could get to areas that the helicopters weren't able to reach, if that matters to anyone.

He wasn't in the boat during the interview so I'm not sure. He didn't talk much other than to keep repeating the name of a local hospital where people should go if they need help. The historian did most of the talking and the reporter said that the group spent all day yesterday ferrying people from their homes to safety. I don't remember the exact wording but that's the gist of it.

Yada, yada. He had a photographer with him. That is not a humanitarian effort unless you are hoping to use these pics. Alpaugh is circling and sharing with all news agencies and pinpointing where the victims are. Penn doesn't have a clue, he is exploitive. I feel like Gen. Honore right now, no BS. Here, I'll help ya here:
Sean Penn (born August 17 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/August_17), 1960 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960) in Santa Monica, California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Monica,_California)) is an American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States) film (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film) actor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Actor). Penn is the son of the late Jewish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish) director Leo Penn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Penn) (who was blacklisted (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blacklist) during McCarthyism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism) for refusing to testify) and Irish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish)-Italian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian) Catholic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic) actress, Eileen Ryan. He has two brothers: actor Chris Penn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Penn) and musician Michael Penn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Penn).
Penn launched his career in the film Fast Times at Ridgemont High (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_Times_at_Ridgemont_High) in the role of Jeff Spicoli, and has since starred in over 40 movies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Film) and won an Oscar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Award) for Mystic River (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mystic_River_(movie)). He has also been nominated for three other Academy Awards for his roles in the films I Am Sam (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_Sam), Sweet and Lowdown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweet_and_Lowdown) and Dead Man Walking (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dead_Man_Walking).
In 1991 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991), Penn made his directorial debut with The Indian Runner (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=The_Indian_Runner&action=edit), a film based on Bruce Springsteen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Springsteen)'s song Highway Patrolman (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Highway_Patrolman&action=edit) from the Nebraska (album) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebraska_(album)). He has since directed two more films, both starring Jack Nicholson (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Nicholson), The Crossing Guard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crossing_Guard) in 1995 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995) and The Pledge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pledge) in 2001 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001).
Penn's personal life has been a volatile one. He married pop star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pop_music) Madonna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_(entertainer)) in 1985 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985), a relationship marred by violent outbursts against the press intrusion into his life, including one incident for which he was arrested. After a divorce in 1989 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1989), Penn started a relationship with Robin Wright (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robin_Wright_Penn), with whom he had two children before marrying her in 1996.
On October 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/October_18), 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002), Penn placed a $56,000 advertisement in the Washington Post (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Post) asking President (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/President_of_the_United_States) George W. Bush (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush) to end a cycle of violence. It was written as an open letter and referred to the planned attack on Iraq (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_invasion_of_Iraq) and the War on Terror (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_on_Terror). In the letter, Penn also criticized the Bush administration for its "deconstruction of civil liberties" and its "simplistic and inflammatory view of good and evil." Penn visited Iraq briefly in December (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/December) 2002 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002), largely eschewing meetings with the press.
On April 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_10), 2003 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003), Penn's limited-edition 1987 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1987) Buick (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick) Grand National (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_Regal), with two firearms in the trunk, was stolen in Berkeley, California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley,_California). Penn came under criticism that his gas-guzzling car and gun ownership did not jibe with his advocacy of liberal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_liberalism) causes.
On June 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_10), 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005), Penn made an unexpected visit to Iran (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran) and attended Friday praying (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Friday_prayer) ceremony in Tehran University (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tehran_University), acting as a journalist on an assignment for the San Francisco Chronicle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Chronicle). Perhaps Mr. Penn was taking rescue lessons from President Bush.
Uh, pardon me, but maybe the photographer was along to document the terrible conditions. If it weren't for photographers, the people of NO would still be waiting for GWB to finish playing his guitar.
Sean Penn has not been one to invite idle publicity. In general, his has been an under-the-radar career relative to what he might have had. In fact, Penn is rather well known for his avoidance of "photo ops" and paparazzi.
Too bad his relief effort wasn't successful. Perhaps his seamanship could be improved. [Edited to add I now see reports that say he was successful to some extent - so there's even less reason to criticize him.]
The rest of the attacks on Penn here are nonsense, prompted by God only knows what. (It can't be that folks resent Penn's criticism of the War in Iraq. Because he was right about that.)

The rest of the attacks on Penn here are nonsense, prompted by God only knows what. In my case they are prompted by the fact the city is under manditory evacuation and the rescue workers are in there getting people out.
I don't think civilians are supposed to be going in - in little rickety boats (with personal phtographers) incase they become victims themselves and hamper the rescue efforts.

Don't forget the guy who was driving the little rickety boat, along with the photographer........wonder which one of them was going to do the rescuing if none of them could remember to put the plug in the boat :bang:

Casshew, if your argument was that Sean Penn was foolish, I can't really argue. But there has been a lot of coverage of government ineptitude and the relatively better results of private citizens pitching in to help. (In fact, some here have been arguing bitterly that citizens should "do something" rather than criticize government efforts.)
I was responding to the numerous characterizations of Penn as "dark" and self-serving. That he was unsuccessful is unfortunate, but it doesn't make him ignoble.

If Mr. Penn succeeded in rescuing anyone, or if that photog wasn't his personal photog but a journalist (and not used for political propaganda then I apologize for calling Mr. Penn a "tool" based on that one report. But I see nothing wrong with discussing anyone using this disaster for the wrong reasons, including Bush, etc. FWIW-I think Penn is a brilliant actor, without question.

Because then there wouldn't be a story. Think how many sick and dying could have been put in each van. Times that by the number of news agencies, then times that by the number of days, and you get a few hundred that could have been saved, or saved sooner.
But then there wouldn't be a story.
Sean Penn is a :loser: :loser: .

.
There would have been "no story" if the news media had saved a fraction of the people who were suffering?
So, now it's the news media's fault. I think you need to call and tell Chertoff that. He left them off his ever-growing list.

Over the weekend, David Perez launched an effort to evacuate New Orleans — on his own. Using $200,000, Perez chartered a Boeing 737. Upon landing in Louisiana, he unloaded much-needed supplies he had purchased at a local Costco and later reloaded the plane with 86 weary hurricane victims. if (navigator.userAgent.indexOf("MSIE") != -1) { document.write("<div style=\"float:left;\">"); } else if (navigator.userAgent.indexOf("Mozilla") > -1) { document.write(""); }

How did the idea come that he was there to rescue people? Did he make it known he was going to be rescuing people? Or was that the assumption by whomever took the photos and such? Because my first thought was he was probably there to do a documentary since he's a movie director. He was probably getting a scope of the scene for his next movie.
I can just see him making a movie over it too.

Everyone has the right to the own opinion of course, and I'm certainly not going to say what everyone is thinking is wrong.
My own personal opinion is that I'm not going to speak poorly of someone who maybe was honestly trying to help. Obviously, he isn't a trained rescuer and probably hadn't a clue what he was doing out there and that's why it ended the way it did. If he's anything like a lot of people watching this horror go down on TV, he probably wanted to go down there and do something, do anything to help, whether or not he was truly prepared or not. Some people have their heart in the right place, but just don't have enough sense to carry through, and that's what I choose to believe happened with Sean Penn.

I'd like to see the guy head to Gulfport or Biloxi. We are still seeing just how horrible that was. Many people died there that thought they were back far enough from the Gulf to survive the storm surge, only to find out they weren't.

Honest efforts to help:
1. Walmart and the Walton family (say what you will about Walmart.) $23 million to kick off Bush-Clinton Katrina fund.
2. $5 million donated by author John Grisham and his wife to set up a foundation to rebuild coastal Mississipi. The author normally gives anonymously, but publicized this donation in hopes that others would step up to the plate. That note appeared in the Rocky Mountain News.
3. Frontier Airlines offered free airfare from Houston to Denver plus 2 months living expenses and help with jobs and school for the children. Not too many took them up on the offer, too cold here for many.
4. And finally, our little town of Burlington, CO has sent two big truckloads of water, food and other suggested supplies, such as diapers, towels, soap, books, etc. These items were collected from residents from a list as well as money donated to buy what was needed. They're on their way to LA and Miss with permission and a location to drop the supplies.

Jackson will record the single, "From the Bottom of My Heart," within two weeks, and he plans to enlist other entertainers for the project, spokeswoman Raymone Bain said. "It pains me to watch the human suffering taking place in the Gulf region of my country," Jackson, 47, said in a written statement. "My heart and prayers go out to every individual who has had to endure the pain and suffering caused by this tragedy."
And what are the first three words of his statement, "It pains me." ME ME ME. The name of the song? "From the Bottom of My Heart." MY MY MY.

Ok forget about Sean Penn. I watched a short documentary this evening, and here are the stars who are "getting down and dirty" in New orleans and the South:
Harry Connick Jr. - totally involved, I saw him go into the water and carry an elderly black man off his porch to get aid.
Sean Penn!
Faith Hill - in Alabama, right down with 'em and singing "Amazing Grace" to those sitting in the outdoor shelters
John Travolta! Flew in and visited and comforted those in shelters; hugged them
Celine Dionne! Crying on Larry King, outraged, giving another million but she didn't want to discuss that - he kept trying.
Chris Rock - helping the little children, saying they "reminded him of his own"
George Clooney - giving 1 million, has his own foundation.
I believe Harry Connick's home is New Orleans. Great musician.
There are more I'm sure, I only caught part of the show.
Bless you these generous stars! May many others follow you.

May many others follow you.The donations are really flying in too. I think it's so wonderful.
And even some of the young people are coming forward. They (radio station here) were reading off names and there were several, but the only one I can remember now is Hillary Duff. Other than her name I can't even think of any of the others. Another senior moment brought to me courtesy of Father Time....
Actually, we were having more fun with Michael Jackson. LOL!
KK, I'm pretty sure even you and I are in complete agreement on the subject of Michael Jackson. :truce:

Well, gee, he has no money to give. We are begging people to use their "talents" if they don't have cash.
Look, the Pedo :loser: said he'd write a song! What more do you people want? You think this is the one he wrote for the tsunami victims? He went on Geraldo talking about it, but we've never seen it. I can't see him coming out of his usual stupor to write anything in a week.
Why didn't he make good on his promise to the tsunami victims?

Oh, gosh, I just remembered this. During his trial, his fans posted about his "anti-war" song. It was some drivel with "baby" in there a bunch of times that was obviously not about war. But entertainers were getting attention for anti-war efforts so he trotted it out and didn't bother to rewrite.

It was? Is it still? Every time he has work done on his mouth/teeth, his speech patterns change (I'm serious). Though some of the slurring is chemical, I believe.

I think he has it copyrighted, actually, as such. Seems someone sued him claiming that he stole the "sha-mon" from them, so it must be an actual phrase.

This was interesting last night. Speaking of Michael Jackson and someone else I just can't stomach - Geraldo:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9247152/
OLBERMANN: One last note on the blame business. We can all agree, probably, that this is the worst possible time for grandstanding. Yet, they are out there, celebrities and commentators and others, for whom this is just another opportunity to open their mouths and swallow whole their feet.
Thus, we gently resume one of our nightly features from happier times, COUNTDOWN‘s list of today‘s nominees for the title of worst person in the world.
At the bronze level, Rush Limbaugh again. Amazingly, he was calling the storm on the air Hurricane Katrina Vanden Heuvel, after the liberal commentator of that name. I think Mr. Limbaugh has found a new doctor, if you know what I mean.
Also nominated, Michael Jackson, a news release today announcing—quote—“In response to the widespread devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina, recording superstar Michael Jackson has been moved to pen a song with the working title ‘From the Bottom of My Heart.‘” He says he wants to make it into a new version of “We are the World.”
Gosh. Thanks, Michael. New Orleans, of course, doesn‘t have any songs of its own already or anything.
But the winner, the incomparable Geraldo Rivera. He went out and rescued a 71-year-old woman on Sunday, escorting her and her dog to a heliport near the Convention Center, to great acclaim. Stephen Elliott in New Orleans, writing for Salon.com, reports that, after the woman was medevaced, a doctor took him aside—Elliott, that is—and told him—quote—“That‘s the second time he brought her in here.” They did two takes. Geraldo made that poor woman walk from the FOX News van to the heliport twice, both times carrying her dog.
I‘m guessing the second take was required, because, in the first one, Rivera had given away U.S. troop positions again. Geraldo Rivera, today‘s worst person in the world.

Indeed, Martha.
And even if - for argument's sake - some of these celebrities ARE looking for publicity, shouldn't we be grateful they are doing so in a way that provides help - and, yes, publicity - where help is needed?
nothing much to add to your post, except to remind it's all about getting up from the keyboard and doing something to try and help those victims of Katrina...no matter how insignificant it might be.
I saw Sean Penn tonight on Larry King Live and I would hope some of those of those carping about him before have second thoughts now. I doubt Matt Drudge will ever be shamed, tho...

Yeah, I saw him...... I don't have second thoughts. He's an idiot. He even said that Veteran's benefits could be used for the hurricane disaster. The man doesn't have a clue. Oh, the hell with all the veterans, let's just take what little funding they have for health care and rehabilitation and retirement and artificial limbs and such.

Didn't change my mind, not after I saw that the boat he was hauling around had 4 or 5 other guys taking up space who were obviously not victims of the hurricaine. He said that between his boat and 2 others they rescued 40 people. I wonder how many he himself actually saved.
