Five Days with Katrina - Alvaro, 9/1/05

PROLOGUE: On Sunday August 28 I woke up at 5 in the morning to go to my morning job at the Chateu Sonesta Hotel. The night before, we had been warned that Hurricane Katrina was preying her eyes upon us. In the history of New Orleans, there has NEVER been a direct hit by a hurricane. In everyone's mind, this hurricane would follow the same path that hundreds of past storms had done before. However, because of the size of the storm and ferocity which it tore through South Florida, the citizens of the The Big Easy prepared themselves as best they could... this is my tale of the events...

One of the last pics:

I searched and searched for parking lots and broke into three cars. I was unsuccessful in hotwiring all of them (I mean, do ANY of YOU know how to? I mean c'mon, I was raised with a golden spoon and now I'm committing a minor felony). I was getting frustrated when I remembered a conversation Andy and I had with a friend a couple of days before evacuation. He said that he owned a series of trucks and that he would lock them up in his factory. If worst came to worse, he told us that we could do what we had to do. We walked another mile to the factory over by Calliope and Annunciation Street. The factory had been already been looted. They took power tools, hammers, etc. Two trucks lay there untouched.

Yes, He took lots of photos after the hurricane went through then took the same picture once the levee broke a day later day.
The pics around the Saint Louis Cathedral are amazing

"The Statue of Jesus Christ behind Saint Louis Cathedral is surrounded by about 5 or 6 100+ year old Oak Trees"
