Son, mom lost in Yosemite
Last call from park hotel came late Thursday

Xiaodong Yuan's mother was visiting him from China and wanted to see two iconic American tourist spots: Yosemite National Park and Las Vegas.

Yuan, a 34-year-old computer analyst who lives in Stockbridge, and Zhaohui Wang, who had just turned 60, flew to Las Vegas last Tuesday and then drove a rented car to Yosemite. That's where their trail went cold. The two called from their hotel in Yosemite Thursday night and have been missing since Friday. A group of Yuan's friends, an alumni club of a Bejing university, are trying to organize search parties and are pressing for authorities to do more.

"We are coordinating the rescue efforts; it's a big network of alumni working together to help," said Yale Xiao, a fellow graduate from Tsinghua University who now lives in the Atlanta area. "We are really frustrated. Nobody knows if they really left the hotel. They were in contact everyday until Thursday night. Then nothing."

Xiao said three alumni members from the San Francisco area have accompanied Yuan's wife to Yosemite to conduct their own searches. He said the group has been talking about renting a helicopter to perform a search.

Scott Gediman, a park ranger who is Yosemite's spokesman, said officials planned to conduct a helicopter search Monday afternoon if the clouds broke. He said Yuan and his mother planned to drive the well-travelled Tioga Road route from their hotel through the park, a route of about 70 miles. The mountain road reaches nearly 10,000 feet and it's possible the couple's car ran off the road, Gediman said.

The two had planned to drive about 200 miles to Death Valley and then to Las Vegas before returning to Atlanta.

"We've canvassed the roads, we've talked to the people of [the hotel]," said Gediman. "We conduct a lot of search-and-rescue missions but mostly for hikers. Looking for two people in a car is pretty unique.

"There's no indications of foul play," he said. "That's the puzzling thing."

Yosemite made the news in February 1999, when vacationers Carole Sund, her daughter Juli, 15 and friend Silvina Pelosso, 16, disappeared from a hotel located within Yosemite. Their rental car was missing and investigators suspected they were victims of an accident. A month later, a hiker found the burned car, with two bodies in the trunk. A week later, Juli Sund was found, her throat slashed. Four months later, a Yosemite naturalist, Joie Armstrong, was found murdered.

Cary Stayner, a handyman at a hotel, later was convicted of the four murders.

In the 1999 case, was there any indication of foul play until the bodies were found? I can't remember.

I really hope they are just lost and that they turn up soon. The mom, especially, must be frightened half to death. Prayers for their safe return!

Most people have a perception that our national parks are safe places. Well, they USED to be.

Breathtaking landscapes. Exquisite waterways. Majestic mountains.
These are the images most of us have when we think of our vast National Park system. It appears, sadly, that smugglers, poachers and other criminal thugs have invaded our pristine national treasures.

It could also just be that they are hopelessly lost. It doesn't sound as though they are seasoned adventurers. I'll bet the Parks Services Dept. has to find people all of the time, but it doesn't usually take this long and they don't usually have family members looking this quickly.

I am praying that this is the case and that they turn up thirsty and tired at daybreak.

Edited to add: I should have read ahead to the end of the thread. Some of the roads outside of Yosemite are very dangerous. Sorry to hear of their deaths.

that way of thinking changed when Cary Stayner went on his murder spree. He is even from my town and grew up with a lot of my friends..They weren't suprised to find that he had murdered the 4 women. Yosemite is magnificent, you just need to remember that the 4 legged animals may not be the only ones stalking you...sad but true.

http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/clayton/0905/30missing.htmlThe article said Highway 150, which I didn't know of, so I looked it up; it should be Highway 120, which I am familiar with. There are some very deep, and steep canyons--if you go over the side, it's sayonara.

Like so many of our parks, there is a lot of theft, so you have to be very careful to keep a close eye on your belongings--we were in the tent cabins in Curry Village, and some of our group didn't arrive until after midnight, and their tent cabin, was right next to the tent cabin I was in, and I was sleeping against that side of the tent. I awoke momentarily when they arrived, and they put their stuff in the tent, and went to the bathrooms to wash up, and such, before turning in. In the 15 minutes that they were gone, someone cut through the side of their tent, and rifled their purses, getting about $450 in cash, and stole other valuables, cameras and such. All this happened not more than 4 feet from where my head was.

Good grief that is really scary. I wonder if there is anywhere that is safe in this day and age?

Darn. I didn't want that kind of an ending for this story :furious: Mom and her boy go on vacation together. Mom comes all the way from China. They had probably really looked forward to spending time together and him showing his mother the sights. Weren't there just two things that she wanted to see...the park and Vegas? How blasted sad.
