Actually, you have figured it out, because this one worked great.

I wonder if the young man was dressed for the weather.

I heard on Greta just now that he got wet & was told to go back to change his clothes...What I don't understand is the fact that he had to walk 1/2 mile by himself!!! To me, that's totally irresponsible of the camp counselor would send a 'child' alone in the wilderness, it's just so dangerous out there. I hope & pray they find that little boy.

Weather Hampers Search for Utah Scout
Tuesday, August 24, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY — A search resumed Tuesday for a 12-year-old Boy Scout missing in the Uinta Mountains (search), but chilly, wet weather has dimmed hopes that rescuers will find him alive, officials said.

Garrett Bardsley (search) of Elk Ridge was last seen Friday morning, when his father, Kevin, sent him back to the scout troop's camp after the boy got his shoes and pants wet while fishing, said sheriff's Capt. Joe Offret.

"The likelihood of finding a responsive individual at this point is extremely low," Summit County Sheriff Dave Edmunds said Monday.

Since Friday, the Mirror Lake-Pass Lake (search) area, about 53 miles east of Salt Lake City, has had freezing overnight temperatures, intermittent hail and daytime temperatures hovering only in the 40s.

On Monday and again Tuesday, officials limited the search to professionals out of concern for the safety of untrained volunteers in the poor weather and rugged conditions, Offret said. Volunteers had taken part over the weekend.

"We haven't given up hope. We don't want to leave Garrett on this mountain," said Kevin Bardsley, his voice breaking. "We want to bring him home."

The campsite has been described variously as 150 yards to a quarter mile from the lake on a well-established path. Bardsley said his son wanted to return to the camp and said he knew the way.

Garrett, who was wearing sweat pants, a T-shirt and a hooded sweat shirt, had no provisions or backpack, and the possibility the boy has died of hypothermia (search) is very real, officials said.

No longer assuming Garrett can hear people calling, searchers were checking under logs and rocks where he might have sought shelter.

Last September, Carole Wetherton, 58, and her daughter, Kimberly Beverly, 39, vanished in the same general area when the weather turned bad. Fragments of their remains were not found until June.

It was a happier outcome last month, when another Boy Scout, a 13-year-old, got separated from his troop during a backpacking trip and spent two days hiking alone before rescuers found him.

I pray its not too late for this little guy. This boy's father is never going to forgive himself. Unfortunately, some people think that kids need to "learn to grow up." I agree with the poster above who mentioned the "buddy system."

I have been praying for Garrett several times a day. His story has touched my heart especially b/c he reminds me a lot of my own son, or what I think my son will look like at 12 (he's almost 8 now). God be with this family and God comfort the father, who will feel the guilt for the rest of his life.

If the campsite was indeed a quarter mile away, I don't know how they can know that it's not a stranger abduction. Anything can happen in that distance. I almost hope he HAS been taken, b/c then there is a chance, however remote, that he would be released unharmed.

There is also the hope that the boy, being 12 and possibly angry if his father happened to get angry about his getting wet, is hanging out in a cave, waiting for someone to get close enough for him to yell for help. Sounds stupid, but I had this friend when I was younger, did exactly that, because he was ticked off at his father for chewing him out in front of others. He could have survived a blizzard with what he had set up.

That would only apply if the boy had any reason to want to get back at anyone, though. If he just chose to go back and get some dry clothes, that chance would be out.

Odd that staying in pairs is not required in Utah. Maybe it's an unspoken rule here.

Missing Scout search a 'recovery operation'
Wednesday, August 25, 2004 Posted: 0048 GMT (0848 HKT)

Searchers set out to look for Garrett Bardsley in the Uinta Mountains.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) -- The search for a missing 12-year-old Boy Scout in a mountainous area of Utah was officially labeled a recovery operation Tuesday as authorities all but gave up hope of finding the boy alive.

"This is a great loss for my family right now," the boy's father, Kevin Bardsley, told reporters.

Garrett Bardsley was last seen Friday morning, when his father sent him back to camp after the boy got his shoes and pants wet while fishing in a pond near a lake. The campsite has been described variously as 150 yards to a quarter mile from the lake on a well-established path.

Dozens of searchers have spent the last three days searching for Garrett, who was wearing sweat pants, a T-shirt and a black hooded sweat shirt and tennis shoes. He had no food or backpack.

The search has been hampered by cold, wet weather. Rain mixed with snow fell on searchers Monday, and the temperature plunged to 18 degrees overnight. On Tuesday, the high hovered around 50 degrees, said Sheriff Dave Edmunds.

The official search likely will tail off by the end of the week, Edmunds said, "but we're never going to stop looking."

The camp is located in the Uinta Mountains, east of Salt Lake City.

Sheriff Dave Edmunds: “There’s some reason to believe after talking to mom that he may have sheltered, maybe some type of shelter. He kind of went to some class with the scouts and really grasped the concept of getting into some shelter if bad weather occurred.”

Sounds like he called his Mom after he got lost

I hope you're right Jade but I read that too and I think that Sheriff Edmund's talked to his mom........and she then told him that her son had taken a Scout class......about getting into a shelter.

No, after talking to his mom the Sheriff says there's reason to believe he would shelter since she mentioned to him that Garrett had taken some type of class. I sure wish there was a better ending to this story! I can't even imagine what the parents are going through, and poor little Garrett being lost out there. So sad!!!!!

The trained search and rescue personnel are carrying GPS locators. At the end of the day, they plug their data into computers at the search command center near Mirror Lake, about 53 miles east of Salt Lake City. When the data are laid over a topographical map, ``it's really dramatic, because you can see just how much area has been covered,'' Edmunds said.

The official search likely will tail off by the end of the week, Edmunds said, ``but we're never going to stop looking.''

The sheriff's office has tacked up posters of Garrett near trail heads and distributed them to businesses in the area. ``We have treated this like any missing child,'' Edmunds said. ``We have spared nothing.''

But it's possible Garrett's body never will be found. Over the decades, people have been lost and not found in the Uintas.

``It's just not that unusual,'' Edmunds said. ``I've worked for a lot of agencies in the state of Utah where they have bodies they've never found.''

How dare they tell this family that they've given up hope that he's alive!!! If it were my child, I wouldn't believe he was gone until I had proof! That might be so, but at 18 degrees at night, there wouldn't be ANY hope if there wasn't some chance he found shelter, especially since he was partially wet. At this point, the searchers have to search as if Garrett is unable to answer. If he could, he would have by now.

This breaks my heart. My son is 9 and is a boy scout. He can go camping for the first time this year, in October. I don't know what the policy is for camping, but there are always two adults that are supposed to be with the children at all times when they have meetings. This policy was imposed when there were allegations of sexual abuse when one leader was alone with children. This is to protect the child and the adult. I can see if this Dad was a leader, and he just figured since it was his kid that it would be OK. But I think if it had been another child he would have sent a buddy. Very sad. I do know that Boy Scouts takes this stuff seriously and will change for the better because of this. I was a girl scout leader last year. They no longer want the girls to go door to door to sell cookies. They tell us to have them go to people they know. They don't say, but I bet this is because of Danielle VanDam.

Fox News is reporting this morning that police believe there could be a connection between Garrett's disappearance and that of the man who is missing in the same area. The man was undergoing psychiatric evaluations and apparently took a gun from his home along with him when he went to the woods. They aren't saying that they think this man may be holding Garrett or if they think another person in the area may be holding both of them....they are just saying there may be a connection. I couldn't find a news link on the Fox site to add to this, but this report was just on about 20 minutes ago. Wouldn't it be great if Garrett is alive and simply being held by this man and police can find them??

The reporter that the FNC anchor was talking to is saying that they are now not sure when exactly the man DID go missing, that is being investigated as part of the possible connection. Even if the guy did go missing a few days after Garrett, it's possible he found Garrett still-but-barely alive and got him then.

Search dogs would not have had much luck in the wet weather anyway. The unfortunate part about water is it tends to wash away the scent, making it difficult for the dogs to follow.

I don't have as much faith in search dogs as some do. But thank goodness for the finds they do make.

Hey. I'm 15 years old and from British Columbia, Canada. I am a former scout and in a scouting chat room I heard about Garrett and it made me feel so bad. Garrett's family won't give up search, but vow to help others with missing children.

Dated 9/2/04 http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,595088570,00.html

I remember when this first happened and I was reading the news about it on one of the online news agencys reports. One of the persons reporting said something to the effect that this type of thing (a scout getting lost in the Uintas) was a common occurrence and so it would probably be no big deal. I was thinking about how calloused that sounded, especially since it DID turn out to be a BIG deal. I just think it was uncalled for and very unfeeling to the parents of all the other children who have gone missing (to think that their child was not special or that it happened all the time, so don't have a cow about it, attitude). Prayers for Garrett's family!

I don't know as far as streams, etc., but the conditions have been so bad. It's been snowing, very cold, etc. With no provisions it looks grim, but what a story it would be if he were found alive. I still think about this little guy every day....bless the family and I just hope they will find him so the family can have peace. I have learned though to teach my children if they're ever lost to stay put....it's not something I would have ever thought about before hearing this sad story. I have extreme sympathy for the father....I have to admit I would have let my child at 12 walk back to camp.

:waitasec: Anybody given anythought to making "whistles on scouts" a mission in honor of Garrett?

I don't understand why every scout doesn't have an "extra" loud whistle around their neck at all times as a rule. In this case, the moment someone is disoriented, they can sit and "whistle" until help arrives.

Something good can come of something bad, perhaps this is a small thing.

Anyone know the name of the scout troop? I think my kids and I would like to mail each of them a "bear whistle", in honor of Garret.

Fran what a good idea......

There are watches for kids with GPS devices in them....I'm not sure on the price but it is good to think about when taking kids hiking/camping. My little brother was a butterfly chaser and he would get lost in the blink of an eye....one time he the police had to be called to find him.....

I have a kiddo who has "run off" for years, because he likes to run without "thinking" about it. He's a teenager now, but, we have a sort of signal with my car horn when I go looking for him.

I realize there are GPS deals, I have some objections to those, but the main one is for kiddos, the "practical" aspects. Whistles are cheap and easy to use. They don't require other technology to locate the "whistler". Whistling back and forth could be a very simple technique. For example, one of the leaders wants a head count or cant find a scout so they whistle for a response, everyone not in eyesight would respond with a "whistle back". You get the idea.

Anyway, the extra loud, plastic orange whistles that are already recommended for earthquake and other disaster supplies are around $2 bucks a pop. Very affordable, even if they are lost.

And it doesn't require any rocket science for use.

My kids all have walkie talkies, they play on the beach of the island we live on, but they often leave there radios or run the batteries down, whistles have no batteries.

Well, I'm not going to keep "selling" the idea, but again, if anyone knows how I can contact the scout troop, we'll see if we can't get "Garrett's Whistles" rolling.

Are any searches still going on for Garrett?
Does anyone know anything about the SAR dogs used in the search?
Does anyone know what if anything the boyscouts are taught about search techniques? I ask because I understand that the "tracks" were covered by volunteers before any trained searchers were on scene.
What are boyscouts taught to do when they are lost, I realize that this would very from group to group, but, I'm just curious about the basic standards.

Thanks

My daughter got a great whistle/compass necklace a few years back from the Girl Scouts for selling cookies. It is the greatest thing ever invented in my book, and she uses that when we go hiking or camping (wouldn't help on the beach because she lives in the water there) and we have always used the "stay put and whistle" rule (assuming the walkie talkie batteries may have gone dead).

I haven't found the scout troop, and started thinking it might be better to wait a bit while the family is actively searching. You can always go the the Boys Scouts of America site, and send the suggestion to them.

The latest article I read on the Utah News sites is that 200 people went out searching on Labour Day.

Searches are still being continued by volunteers and coordinated by the family. The police are basicly out of the search. They say they will do searches every once and a while as training. I dont think they should give up till they find them but hey, thats just me.

www.prayforgarrett.uni.cc (my site) has the latest news on him and is updated daily when there is news on Garrett. The last update was Labour Day but I am still searching for news. I will continue updating it atleast once a day (I am back in school today)

Please dont give up hope and pray or go to church and light a candle (If you are not religious, wish on a star for the return of Garrett or a four leaf clover or a horseshoe or whatever you want) Just please, keep on praying/wishing.

Sincerely,
Aaron P.

Fran,
The whistle idea is great. My son is in Boy Scouts and I will definately make sure his pack has whistles the next time they go camping. I also told my son about Garrett. I didn't know if I should or not. I didn't want to scare him, but I also wanted him to be aware of what could happen. I told him to always stay with a buddy. Take a buddy, blow a whistle and stay put! Once we get going again, which is just this week, I will try to find out what boy scouts has to say about getting lost. It's probably not in their manual, but the leaders should know.

I would have a "practice" session for getting lost. Pretend someone is lost and use the whistles. Maybe short whistles for I'm lost, and long ones for "where are you, we're coming". You get the idea.

When I was a kid, I would have been embarrassed to "whistle" that I was lost. But, with practice, the embarrassment seems to subside.

Also, "drills" like someone pretending on an outing that a scout is lost will help address both issues.

Look for the bright orange emergency whistles. They're not expensive but REALLY loud. Perhaps if you call them "Garrett's Whistles" to your scout troop, not only do you honor Garrett, but, hopefully the kids will better understand this is serious!

Best Wishes

"The family has continued to search for Garrett since the official search and rescue was called off Aug. 29. Since then, they decided to create a foundation and build a school in Ecuador in his name. It is a family tradition to spend Christmas in other countries helping with humanitarian aid, a trip that Garrett was looking forward to this year, Kevin Bardsley said."

Wow, that is a very special family. God bless them. I sure wish we knew exactly what happened. Did he just get lost? Did an animal get him? Did he get abducted? Too many questions and not enough answers!

did anyone see oprah yesterday?

his parents were on and so were his brothers and sister. while his father made me cry, they have an amazing attitude and strength. they told oprah that they knew the chance of him being abducted were slim and that he probably ran off and got disoreiented. they did not think he was alive. but garett's mom told oprah that instead of letting this ruin her life she was turning it into a positive - such as building the school in equador.

they have been passing out information to hunters in the area in hopes that one will notice something.

i hope that someone finds garrett soon...his family deserves it.

I would think that with it being late spring, even the mountain areas are warming up and drying out. I'm hoping some hiker or camper comes across Garrett's remains (as grisly as that sounds) and his body is returned to his family. Prayers for the Bardsleys.

Wouldn't it be great if Garrett is alive and simply being held by this man and police can find them??I think since not finding anything Garrett had with him. That he's still alive. And that the men or man with the Gun has him somewhere in Utah still. and he's not able to answer anyone cause he's not in the area for them to hear him calling back. If this is true. why not get intouch with the Sheriff Dave Edmounds and see what he and his partners can find out still. I would If I was him....

I Also Have ASP And think he'll come home within 1 to 2 weeks, Like the Smart Girl did earlier this year. Or last year. He's still alive and trying to plan his Exscape as far as I am concerned. What do you think on this? also Interested in helping on a Special Dedicated Site For Garrett???

Please email me If Interested.

I want to start a new posting and see what goes on with Helping to find Garrett Bardsley.

I would Like to Know if there is like a month old news on Garrett Bardsley. With new and old Images for him as well as News. I am also starting up a Blog Site For Him. I would like Comments and Links to all of the News Articles and Videos, For Him. If there is anything since This Past August 2005.

I have made calls to The Family One I got through to one of the Sons. Cameron Bardsley This Eveing. I asked him to see if The Father(Kevin) Was Available. He Said He was busy with Something. So I left With Cameron my Phone Number. And to call me back..

So far He's not returned my call yet. I know it's hard to believe Garrett is long gone. But I know if they didn't find anything on the last search. He's still Alive and with someone.. And that Garrett will return home soon.

I am willing to bet that Garrett will be home within 1 to 2 weeks, With the help Of Dave Edmounds and the officer Nick Wilinson and the team. Why I am saying this Is because i have ESP And Know it.

I found something on here that might work on getting Garrett back Home again. Go to search and add Garrett Bardsley into it. Then go to Page 2 of the Missing Boy Information. First posting. I think he's with them or him. So let's get on the ball again and bring Garrett Bardsley Home for good!

I pray for the family and Garrett now. And willing to post posters on him in my area too.

This is a hard feeling for me and the Family of Garrett's. I just don't want to start crying and not being able to stop it. but I am on medication for emotions I lost my Father 20 years ago this Tuesday. He went to work and Never came home. (Died of a Heartattach Age 54.... Please help in anyway you can to bring this boy home with me. All Details that are posted on this thread will be on the blog site.

Another family friend, who asked not to be named, said Kevin Bardsley saw Garrett walking the wrong way and pointed his son in the direction of the camp. "It's not like he just pointed to the woods and said, 'Find your way back, son.' It couldn't have been more than 150 paces from where they were fishing," he said.

Heidi Bardsley said Garrett is a typical boy who likes to ride dirt bikes and draw. He is not very adventurous as a rule, she said.
"I think he panicked and ran the wrong way," she said.
"Don't leave anything unturned," urged Kevin Bardsley as searchers trooped off into the woods.

The area where Bardsley disappeared has very rough terrain. The day he vanished, the temperature was near to freezing and it rained and hailed. Bardsley has passed wilderness training courses offered by the park council. Police say there is no evidence that he was abducted; they believe he became lost on the way back to the campsite and died of exposure. His parents, however, believe he was kidnapped. Bardsley's case remains unsolved.

I will continue to post in this thread as I get Information on Garrett. Please help me out here also.

Here's a link to what I think happend to Garrett Also I think It's true with the first posting that was posted on this page, that he's still alive and with these men. That is why No item has been found from Garrett so far.

After that I will close this posting If I get dead in the water from both of them. And leave the Community alone with Garrett being Dead!. I am praying that he's not and was abducted. If I am wrong then I am going to do other thing's instead of posting here. I'm Very Upset on this small news I got from AP-128 so far. So please pray he's wrong and he comes home somehow.

Thank you.

It's been nearly four years since 12-year-old Garrett Bardsley disappeared in the Uinta Mountains. Can his parents ever go there again and not catch glimpses of him in the shadows of the trees?
Bardsley is just one of 64 missing persons listed on the Utah Department of Public Safety's Web site. The longest missing is 3-year-old Jenny Klein, who disappeared from a Moab campground in 1974.
During a distracting commotion, someone picked Jenny up and walked away with her. For years her family has been forced to deal with the unknown. Is she a grown woman today or a collection of tiny bones in a nameless gully? If it were your daughter, could you look at a 30-something woman today and not wonder?
Missing and unknown are not things that time heals. Human beings are creatures of boundless hope. When it comes to love, we have to know. That's why we drive the roads and stare out the windows, why we never stop waiting for a knock, hoping that our love will come back to us.
