Missing Silver Spring Girl Possibly Ran Away, Police Say
12-Year-Old Last Seen Monday After School

UPDATED: October 13, 2005

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Montgomery County police are asking for help locating a missing 12-year-old girl from Silver Spring.

Loren Astwood is a student at Briggs Chaney Middle School in Spencerville. She was last seen after school Monday. She took the bus and then walked a friend home.

Police think she may have run away. They said she had told several of her friends that she was moving and that Monday was going to be her last day of school.

Astwood's parents said that running away would be out of character for her. They said she has never attempted to run away in the past and they had no idea what would cause her to run away.

Authorities said they spoke to a 16-year-old boy from North Carolina who apparently met the girl on the Internet. He told police he had not seen or heard from Astwood, either.

Astwood stands 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 160 pounds.

Anyone with information about the location of Astwood should call the Family Crimes Division at (240) 773-5400 or the Montgomery County police non-emergency line at (301) 279-8000.

If it's out of character for her to run away then I would bet she met someone on the internet. That seems to be so popular now. I hope they check her computer (although it sounds as if they already have).

It's been 5 days now and no sign of this young girl? It is just scary as heck with all of the perverts walking around out there just waiting to "make friends" with young girls who are alone. The easiest prey around.

I wonder where she told her friend she was going when she left her house?
I hope she shows up soon. If one of my kids had run away and put me through the hell some parents have been put through I swear when they were found or came home they would be locked in their room with the windows nailed shut until they turned 18 yrs!! Not saying this gal ran away.
Just saying we wouldn't have cake and ice cream and "all is forgotten."

Girl Recognized At Greenbelt Mall

UPDATED: October 17, 2005
SILVER SPRING, Md. -- A missing 12-year-old girl from Silver Spring has been located, Montgomery County police said.

Loren Astwood is a student at Briggs Chaney Middle School in Spencerville. She disappeared after school Oct. 10, when she took the bus and then walked a friend home, but now she has returned home.

On Sunday, a security guard at the Greenbelt Mall recognized Astwood from media reports and contacted police. It is unclear where Astwood has been and what she has been doing for the past week.

Police said Astwood had told several of her friends that she was moving and that Oct. 10 was going to be her last day of school.

Astwood's parents said they had no plans to move and that running away would be out of character for the girl. They said she has never attempted to run away in the past and they had no idea what would cause her to run away.

Authorities said they spoke to a 16-year-old boy from North Carolina who apparently met the girl on the Internet. He told police he had not seen or heard from Astwood, either.

Nothing else on this young girl? She was spotted in a mall so it sounds like no one was holding her. Little stinker. Glad she is alright and back home safe and sound.
