(12/17/03 - LONDON) — A former school caretaker was convicted Wednesday of murdering two 10-year-old girls and sentenced to two life terms in a case that attracted huge media attention in Britain.

Ian Huntley had denied murdering the girls, claiming Holly Wells accidentally drowned in his bathtub when he was helping her stop a nosebleed and that he apparently smothered Jessica Chapman while trying to stop her screams.

No he got 2 life sentences which is mandatory in Murder cases here. the tariff will be set by a high court judge.

There are two guidlines that apply. Multiple (2 or more) killings which show a large degree of pre planning start at 30 years, the last guy sentenced under this guidline got 50 years.

the second has a child element and a sexual element in it this will draw a "Full Life" sentence which means no release ever.
There are only 20 or so prisoners in our system with full life and I believe Huntley will be one of them.
