It's been six months since seven-year-old Dalton Mesarchik was abducted from in front of his home, fatally bludgeoned with a sledgehammer and dumped in the Vermilion River. His mother renewed her plea yesterday for help in the unsolved case.
http://news.onemissingperson.org/IL-SEP-25-2003-No-arrests-six-months-after-childs-abduction-and-murder.html

Although investigators have fielded more than 750 telephone calls in connection to the abduction-murder of 7-year-old Dalton Mesarchik, police do not have enough evidence to make an arrest.

Something about this case seems a bit more of a "getting back at" or an anger problem. Maybe someone was either mad at one of the parents, felt the boy was standing between something or going to report them.

We had a case more than maybe thirty years ago where a man did this same thing to two little girls and dumped them in the Duck River....turns out they said he was mentally retarded. The girls were playing in a junk yard and he tired to tough them and they told him they were going to tell and he killed them, in the same manner as Dalton.

After reading that article my biggest suspect is Dalton's father. It was 2 weeks after he was served with 2 child support cases. That would be overwhelming for many people.

Dalton doesn't have his last name so I am assuming that Dalton's father never married Dalton's mother and that he didn't give him his last name either.

I wonder if Dalton's father was close with Dalton at all? Did he visit often or take Dalton places?

Would Dalton have gone with him that night....probably he would have.

Very strange that the man who found Dalton is married to another woman who has 2 children by Dalton's father. Could the murderer have been trying to frame this man?

Very strange case....something about it doesn't seem right...

Here is the basic set of hammers which HTI suggests for the beginning handyperson

A three pound hand drilling hammer -- for use with metal striking tool – cold chisels, brick chisels, star drills – and for hardened masonry nails.

HTI reminds the user that there are many other types and sizes of hammers, and other struck tools, to fit various jobs and individuals. It stresses that the individual should take care to fit the hammer to himself as well as the job to be tackled.

An Annotated Checklist for Fossil Collecting

CRACK/SLEDGE HAMMERS - Crack hammers are small to medium size sledge hammers, 2 to 4 pounds with various lengths of handles but usually short. These hammers are useful when you are doing some serious excavation in hard rock or you need to drive large chisels. I keep a three-pound crack hammer in the trunk of the car but seldom actually carry it with me.

This is the home town of my boss, and she was in Streator this past weekend. At least 50 LE came to town Thursday evening, staying at the Super 8 and are in high investigative mode. You can imagine the impact that many state police and other LE personnel are having on a town of 14,000! They are using both marked and unmarked cars to stop traffic, issuing all types of traffic tickets - from not using turn signals, to the more usual speeding violations, etc. Asking LOTS of questions. The following article is from the Bloomington, IL Pantagraph paper. I'm still searching for a transcript of the news conference that was held yesterday in Streator - but I doubt I'll have any luck. Sounds like there may be closure on this case soon.

This is great. I have to think they've got something or they wouldn't be handling this the way they are. A person or "certain type" of person? Race? Skin condition? Medication? What are the possibilities they're talking about here? What type of evidence can point to a "type" of person?

I was thinking more along the lines of gang member, pedophile, serial killer, sex offender?

Maybe they are hoping to pull someone over who will make a run for it and tip the cops off?

Maybe they are looking for a certain drunk driver? Maybe they think Dalton was hit by a vehicle and the driver killed him rather than be charged with drunken driving?

Also, I noticed they said "suspect or suspects" do they suspect more than one person? or a gang?

The FBI surely did a profile on the type of person. Probably based upon facts such as how far was he carried (size age and strength of person or persons) three pound hammer found with blood on it plus only sold at Kmart. Time of day found and possible time it happended. The area he was found in and what persons and types would know of this area and have access. Then any evidence found in the area such as hair clothing. was a vehicle needed to access the area or to get away. Where did the murder take place and was it where he was found or was he transported more than once?

They are very confident that they have the person cornered in the town and while they might not have his name they know a lot about him.

YOU CAN HIDE BUT WE'RE NOT GOING TO LET YOU RUN!!!!!!!!

Maybe So, I was thinking the same thing at first. But, look at what they're doing with this task force. They have completely drenched this town in cops and are pulling people over for "safety checks" (it's a thing they do in ILL I guess). This Dalton task force is not behaving the way a task force would normally. Some people are followed from their home all the way to their workplace in the morning. Some people are being stopped for these "safety checks" two and three times in the same day. They're giving people tickets for following too closely while pulling into parking lots for cripes sake! I think they're looking for something specific about this suspect that they'll know when they see it and that's why they are getting as much face time as possible with the residents of Streator. Maybe it's a genetic disorder tipped off by DNA testing. A rare eye color? I'm racking my brain trying to figure out what's going on here...

Seems like they might just scare the person right out of town if they are not carefull.

Genetic disorder....downs syndrome? dwarfism? someone who suffers from MS or MD,

a cancer or aids patient?

Rare blood type? do IL driver's liscenses have blood type on them...some do if they have donar stickers.

Or maybe just someone who will be carrying tools of their trade?

I wish they would give out just a little info.

Perhaps they are trying to flush the guy out? Scare everyone, watch who runs? Or possibly, by harrassing everyone, they can search his vehicle or home without him complaining that he was illegally singled out.

That's how they found Holly Jones murderer, went door to door, and saw evidence inside the house that made them think they needed to stake the place out and grab a soda can to get DNA saliva.

Sometimes it's shake the tree and see what falls out.

P.S. They do "Safety Checks" all the time here. It's a great fund raiser. They'll get you for a burned out bulb, even if you have a replacement in your hand, you still get a $10.00 ticket; they'll get you if your bumber is 1/2" too low; your seat belt isn't on; whatever.

Task force halfway through leads
By CRAIG WIECZORKIEWICZ — News Reporter

The Dalton Mesarchik Homicide Task Force is more than halfway through following up on an estimated 600 leads obtained since it began operation March 26.

Investigators have looked into approximately 350 leads so far, said media liaison Illinois State Police Trooper Jeff Darko.

There still has been nobody arrested or charged in connection to the 7-year-old Streator boy’s murder, although the task force announced 12 days ago that there is a suspect or suspect type in the homicide case.

“As I have said before, this is a slow process,” Darko said. “We will gather all the information in a way which provides the best case for an arrest and the best case for a state’s attorney to charge and convict in front of a judge or jury beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Some recent actions by the task force include a truck-weighing roadside safety check Thursday on Route 23 just north of Route 17, and seizure of a stolen car that was found parked in the driveway of a rental home in the 1500 block of East Main Street.

“A state trooper received a report there was a possible stolen vehicle that was in plain sight at that location,” Darko said.

Responding troopers checked the vehicle identification number of the brown 1991 Mercury car that was parked at the residence. They learned the car was reported stolen from Chicago, so they seized the car and had it towed from the scene, Darko said.

Investigators received owner permission to check the property for anything suspicious. The property renter has not been living there for the past couple weeks, said Tim Mehalic, who owns the rental property.

In addition to the stolen car, police removed two motor scooters and a toolbox from the property.

The task force also continues to conduct roving roadside safety checks throughout Streator. Between Monday and Wednesday, the task force issued 112 citations (including 71 for safety belt violations and three for alcohol-related violations) and 95 warnings and made 14 criminal arrests. Statistics were not available this morning for safety checks conducted after Wednesday.

The Illinois Department of Corrections assisted the task force in making a parolee compliance check sometime last week, said IDOC spokesman Sergio Molina.

Molina said it was a standard parolee check, which includes drug testing. The parolee was not taken into custody.

The multijurisdictional task force is comprised of about 60 law enforcement officers from various agencies including Illinois State Police and the Streator Police Department.

Anyone with information about the Mesarchik case is encouraged to contact the task force by calling 1-877-DALTONM (1-877-325-8666) or e-mailing daltonm@isp.state.il.us , or by sending standard mail to Dalton Mesarchik Homicide Task Force, P.O. Box 406, Streator, IL 61364.

Livingston County Board member George Knudsen hopes that significantly increasing the reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Dalton Mesarchik’s killer will lead to a swifter solving of the 13-month-old case.

“Maybe this will be that little more incentive that someone needs to comes forward,” Knudsen said.

Investigator: Have suspect, need more proof

By DAN CHURNEY — For The Times-Press

There is a suspect in the murder of Dalton Mesarchik of Streator, according to Sgt. Greg Lindemulder of State Police District 6 in Pontiac, which is overseeing the murder investigation.

Lindemulder, however, will not provide more details nor would he verify observations on the case by retired detective Jim Conover. (See related article.)

“We have evidence that points us to a suspect, but the one link is missing that would tie everything together,” Lindemulder said. “There have been people eliminated as suspects.”

Lindemulder added that depending on the need, as many as two detectives each from District 6, Streator Police and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office work the investigation.

In March 2004, around the first anniversary of the murder, State Police formed the Dalton Mesarchik Homicide Task Force, which was comprised of 45 troopers and support staff, with help from other agencies, including the La Salle and Livingston County sheriff’s offices and Streator Police.

Investigators were headquartered at the Army National Guard armory in Streator and billboard posters publicizing the case were displayed in Streator, but the task force was disbanded by early June.

La Salle County State’s Attorney Joseph P. Hettel noted he has extensively used the investigative function of the grand jury to probe the Mesarchik case. Besides indicting suspects, the grand jury can investigate by issuing subpoenas to compel people to appear and answer questions, as well as to obtain documents. He would not comment further about the grand jury proceedings.

Tip Doesn't Pan out
Posted May 6, 2005 2:14pm

Hope for some closure in the murder of a seven-year-old Streator boy took a step backwards Friday as officials say a promising tip isn't panning out.

An Illinois State Police official said another agency had suggested investigators last week talk to a ''person of interest'' in the murder of Dalton Mesarchik. The person was in custody in another case.

Authorities now say that person isn't a suspect and nothing connects him to the Streator case, although authorities are still looking into it.

The boy was taken from his front porch on March 26, 2003, while he was waiting for a church van to take him to Bible study. His body was found the next day.

Police know what kind of a murder weapon was used, but haven't arrested anyone to date.

The person who runs "The Cellar" website, a site focusing on murderer Joseph Duncan III, has a timeline map:

It *alludes* to the possibility that Duncan may have been involved in Dalton's murder. There's no evidence yet showing that Duncan was involved, but as you wrote, Maybe So, it's possible that Duncan was in the area or moving through the area when Dalton was killed.

If we could only access Duncan's encrypted files!!!

I saw Dalton's mother on Nancy Grace. Such a sad situation. He was waiting for the church bus to come and pick him up. It was running late...his sister had called the church when the bus didn't come on time...so when his mom checked a little later and Dalton was gone she thought the church bus had gotten there and he was on it. Later she discovered that he had never been on the bus.

I'm wondering if someone that he knew stopped by and said that they would give him a ride to church as the bus was running late. He was on his porch and it seems to me someone would have had to coax him out to the street. It doesn't sound like a stranger abduction to me.

I know that they are looking at the kidnapper of Shawn and Ben to see if he may have had something to do with Dalton's disappearance. I hope that LE finds out what happened to this little boy. This has to just be hell for his family.

Taking action: Mesarchik marking anniversary of son's death as advocate

It's been seven years since seven-year-old Dalton Mesarchik of Streator was found murdered.

[snip]

To honor Dalton's memory, his mother, Michelle Mesarchik, who has moved out of the area, has dedicated her life to advocating on a local and national level for families of missing and exploited children. Mesarchik says she deals with her son's death by educating children and assisting with children's identification and DNA clinics to help prevent a similar situation from happening to other families.
