Florida is riveted to the sensational trial of a Tampa man accused of plying gay men with the date rape drug GHB and then sexually assaulting them amid further allegations he is implicated in a series of gay murders.
The trial of Steven Lorenzo, 46, has been shown pictures of S&M gay sex, videos, samples of the drug, and teased with speculation about the killings of two other victims for which he is not charged.
Lorenzo is on trial for the date rapes of seven young gay men.
The evidence shown to jurors in federal court was seized from Lorenzo’s Tampa home in June of 2004. It includes graphic pictures and videos of Lorenzo having sex with several of the victims. The men are shown tied up on Lorenzo's bed and were taken at various times.
The prosecution says it will present testimony from an associate of Lorenzo, Scott Schweickert, who also is facing trial on date rape charges. Schweickert has implicated Lorenzo in the murders of two other gay men.
Police say that authorities in several other states where gay men have disappeared and where Schweickert have lived or visited have expressed interest in the case.
Police say they are continuing to investigate Lorenzo in connection with the murders and charges could be filed soon.
