The mother of a Jackson man who was killed Sunday morning said today she's upset that police have not pressed charges against the man who shot her son.
"They aren't trying to look for anybody," said Vonda Rawls, who identified herself as the mother of 23-year-old Marcus Rawls.
Jackson police found Marcus Rawls dead on the porch of a house at 464 Willaman St. at 4:36 a.m. Sunday. He died from a gunshot wound to the head, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said.
Detective Brendon Bell said Marcus Rawls likely was trying to break into the home because he was wearing a ski mask and gloves when he was found.
Bell would not release the name of the man who shot Rawls, but said he was "an occupant" of the house who heard noises and shot through the door.

Police say Rawls was attempting to burglarize the home, when the unidentified resident there fired one shot at the door. The bullet went through the door and killed Rawls.
Police say the victim had partially kicked the door in when he was shot.
Neighbors say while authorities examined the scene early Sunday, they also found a gun on the victim.
At this time no charges have been filed against the shooter. The victim's family didn't want to discuss the incident, but said they want police to investigate this as homicide. Friends did say the family has set up a trust fund.

Well, I think they should hunt this guy down...
And, give him a medal of honor and the key to the city. Good job, shooter!!
If more of this stuff could happen (safely for the TRUE victims) some of these idiots and druggies might think twice and, if not, at least get weeded out of our society!!

Police: Homeowner Who Shot, Killed Alleged Burglar May Not Face Charges
POSTED: 9:19 am CST November 29, 2005
UPDATED: 9:30 am CST November 29, 2005
Jackson police said a homeowner who killed a man on his porch probably won't face any charges.
Officers found 23-year-old Marcus Rawls shot in the head at a Willa-man Street home Sunday morning.
The homeowner, Cedric Marshall, told police he fired one shot through the door to "scare" the burglar off.
Rawls was released from prison in September, after serving four years for another house burglary in 2001.

Victim pleaded guilty to burglary in 2004; mother says he wasn't breaking in.
Although Marcus Rawls has a criminal history, including burglary, his mother said Monday she does not believe he was trying to break into a house when he was fatally shot early Sunday morning.
Rawls pleaded guilty in October 2004 to charges of burglary of an occupied dwelling, receiving stolen property and cocaine possession dating to 2000, according to Hinds County Circuit Court records. He was sentenced to serve four years in prison and, with time served, was released last month, according to Mississippi Department of Corrections records.
Police found Rawls dead on the porch at 464 Willaman St. at 4:36 a.m. Sunday wearing a ski mask and gloves. He died from a gunshot wound to the head, Hinds County Coroner Sharon Grisham-Stewart said.
Rawls had died shortly before his body was found by police, Grisham-Stewart said.
Willis said Marshall told him Sunday he thought two men were trying to break into his home at 2 a.m. and shot through the door to scare the intruders away.
"He was trying to protect himself," Willis said. "He wasn't trying to kill anybody."
Bell would not say if Rawls was accompanied by anyone else at the time of the shooting.
Willis said his brother did not realize he had hit anyone until a few hours later and called the police.
Bell would not identify the person who made the 911 call to authorities.

Well, let's pretend we think its possible that he could be innocent. What does mom propose that he was doing on someone's porch at 2:00 a.m. wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun?

I don't know. Things are starting to smell funny.
Timeline is coming out.
2:00 AM Two persons are trying to break down the door, occupant shoots through the door. Doesn't check outside for damage, or anything.
At sometime around 4:36 AM police arrive and find that the guy has not been dead long.
I haven't seen anything to say when LE was called, but that is a large gap, if I was scared enough to shoot through my door, I think I would also be calling LE. Then when LE does finally arrive, the man hasn't been dead long. Hmmm.
Case is going to Grand Jury.

I can see that in order pacify mom, the case being presented to a grand jury. However, before someone can be charged with a crime, intent must be shown. They may come up with some sort of neligence charge or firing off a firearm, but I don't see how they're going to be able to prove the guy intentionally killed the guy.

Okay..........it is 2:00 a.m. and I hear something suspcious at the front door. I get my gun, just in case. It sounds like 2 people are trying to break into my house! I am mad and scared as hell............so I aim at the door and start shooting. All of a sudden, everything is quiet. What do I do............just go back to bed? :waitasec:

No, you wait two hours, then go look outside! If he has quit breathing, then you call LE.

As far as I have seen, they haven't id'd the person who called 911, they haven't said what time they got the call, and they haven't officially said who the shooter was. The shooter's brother is the one who id'd the shooter.

I think it depends on the neighborhood you live in. In my neighborhood, someone would recommend that I drag the guy into my house, but there are three cops and an FBI agent on my block. In this person's neighborhood, maybe someone making noise on the porch isn't all that strange, the guy panicked and shot, thought he scared the guy away and went to bed. I could buy it, especially when the dead guy is wearing a ski mask, has a gun and a long record.

This area is ummm...shall we say "the hood" of Jackson, if I lived near there and heard someone scrounging around on my porch at 2 a.m. I would probably shoot first then ask questions later.
Just found this..he had a gun, so there is the intent...IMO

Detectives, the mayor, and the police chief were on scene Sunday as the property's owner stopped by. He said the shooter had lived in the home about six months.
Neighbors say while authorities examined the scene early Sunday, they also found a gun on the victim.
