This is the thing that baffles me. Almost three years and only one link. There is so much descrimination in the media. Your loved one literally has to go missing on a "slow" news day. ARGH

Every missing person is important!

New link for Jan, made by a friend of the family, with guest book

Praying for answers, Lanie

It sounds to me like her boyfriend may be a suspect. The article doesn't say that directly, but it seems implied.

01-26-2004, 12:10 PM
jat, I got the same impression that her boyfriend is suspected. If there was blood found and cleaning products used, then why wasn't he arrested or at least questioned? If he went to work that morning, then that doesn't leave a very large time frame for him to dispose of Jan's body. Has a search been done of the surrounding area? My opinion of this case is that LE screwed up solving it in the beginning and now we may never know.

I'm inviting two who are close to Jan to post and read here. Hopefully, soon, they will, and we will have a new printable flyer of Jan available.

I have one, from when she went missing, if anyone wants it, pls e-mail me at MissingProfiles@yahoo.com and as the title, put "Jan Stavros flyer" and thanks.

I pray soon they will have some answers.
Blessings to all, Lanie

Montel Williams did a show about missing people and did a thoughtful piece about my Mom. The show will be airing on Monday November, 29th. To find out what time the show will air in your area go to www.montelshow.com

So sorry about this mom going missing. I hate to say it, but I suspect the boyfriend unless he has been cleared. Perhaps, he was jealous of the relationship Jan had with her ex-husband. It must have been really cordial if they all had dinner together. I hope that this mystery is resolved, especially for her loved ones' sake.

I can't imagine being in the shoes of this family. I just hope and pray that Jan is found so that the family has the answers that they need.

I couldn't get the link to work that gave more info than the first link but it doesn't sound like Jan was the type of person that would just turn her back on her family and leave never to return.

Have the police in Jan's town contacted "America's Most Wanted" to see if they will do a segment on Jan's disappearance? That would get her story and picture out there nation wide. Things seem to move faster when the police make the request. Many missing people have been found through the show.

Such a sad thing to have happen and a lot of prayer is needed for the family.

That was a great show and I hope it will help to find some answers about Jan.
I have been contacting "America's Most Wanted" for the past 3 years
to do a story on her and have yet to here back from them. But I can you this, I will not stop asking them to.

Thanks to ALL

Vital Statistics at Time of Disappearance

Missing Since: January 2, 2001 from Canyon Rim, Utah
Classification: Endangered Missing
Date Of Birth: June 30, 1958
Age: 42 years old
Height and Weight: 5'2; 110 pounds
Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown hair; hazel eyes. Janis wears eyeglasses

Details of Disappearance
Janis resided in the 2900 block of East 3215 South in Canyon Rim, Utah in 2001. She lived with her boyfriend, Robert Brent Butcher Jr. Janis remained close friends with her former husband, Michael Stavros, who also resided in the area. She, Butcher and her daughter, Meghan Laudie, had dinner at Michael's home during the evening hours of January 2, 2001. Michael and Laudie said that Janis and Butcher departed at approximately 10:00 PM.
Butcher said that he departed from their home at approximately 6:00 AM on January 3 for his shift at a construction site. He claimed that Janis was asleep when he left their residence. Laudie attempted to call her mother during the afternoon hours, but Butcher told her that Janis was not at home. Laudie and Michael reported her as a missing person on January 4, two days after Janis disappeared. Authorities searched her residence and discovered that all of Janis' personal belongings were inside, including her cellular phone. Her new puppy was also inside the house and Janis' pickup truck was parked outside. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the property and discovered a canister with marijuana residue, as well as several guns and knives. Blood and bloodstains were found on several unspecified items in the home. Cleaning products had also been placed inside Janis' vehicle. Butcher, who has a criminal record, was jailed due to a parole violation on January 9, 2001. He has maintained his innocence in Janis' case and he has never been charged in connection with her disappearance. Laudie told authorities that Janis mentioned she and Butcher were having problems in their relationship in January 2001. There has not been any activity on Janis' bank accounts or credit cards since her disappearance. Her loved ones said it is extremely uncharacteristic of her to leave without warning and she did not have any travel plans. Foul play is suspected in Janis' case.

According to the Montel Website:

His show 'Vanished' which features the stories of Maura Murray, Janis Stavros, Brooke Wilburger and Jason Jolkowski will re-air on Thursday March 24.

To find the channel and time of airing in your area go to

Let us all send an email to Montel's producers thanking them for their continued efforts on the behalf of these missing persons.

As Montel stated in the first airing of the show "Someone, somewhere knows something." Perhaps, one of the airings of this show will be the lightening rod that brings that "someone" forward.

Jan has been missing for 15 years now.

Janis (Jan) Stavros was last heard from on 01-03-2001. Janice went missing under suspicious circumstances. Janice left without any of her personal items including her cell phone, new vehicle. All accounts of Janice’s actions and behavior did not lead any of her family or friends to believe there were any issues. A search of the residence did not find anything of a suspicious manner and the residence appeared as if she would be coming back. Janice has not been seen or heard from since that day.

I have read Websleuths for a long time, but this is my first post. Just thinking about Janis. I know she is endangered missing, but I am wondering if she is presumed deceased. Her DNA is not in NAMUS, but I took a look through some unidentifieds to get an idea. There are no matches in Utah leaving surrounding states, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado. https://identifyus.org/en/cases/244 could be a match. Wondering if the ex boyfriend has any ties to Nevada, or if there is any more info on this lady or case that might help her family find answers after all these years.
