I think that's a HORRIBLE story!

Ok, I can see putting her in a state institution given what they were told. But she went to a foster home after that? In other words, she could have been cared for at home.

State run institutions allow family to visit. The parents asked for reports and got them. Well goody. They could have received them in person when they went to visit their daughter. Lost touch. That fries my fritters. :furious:

Donya isn't severely retarded. Looks pretty normal to me.

i agree..... there's a big hole in this story here.. something the writer- or the family-- is not telling us.

i was touched by this story because of the timeframe..

back in 1966-68, there are so many horror stories of misdiagnosis--like what i see as Donya being labeled as severley retarded and put into a state institution..visits by family were discouraged..kids were heavily drugged, locked up--horror stories that these institutes did not want parents or families to see.

Donya was perhaps never told of her family because she became a ward of the state.

....similar thing happened to my mom's relative in early 60's

you're right, none of this comes out in the article.

i was just touched that there was a happy ending
