I opened two local papers on New Years Day and found these items (paraphrased):

From the Burlington (Colorado) Record: "Eight arrested in Burlington drug sting operation." In a drug task force including 10 agencies from Colorado and Kansas 8 people were arrested on Dec. 19. They were charged with possession of marajuana, cocaine, meth and "Ice" (another version of meth). These people were distributing, manufacturing and selling near a school. The news said there would be more arrests to follow. This is our second big sting this year. One arrested is the nephew of my MIL's caretaker. Also, according to the Goodland (Kansas) Star-News, there was a major drug bust earlier in 2003. One of those arrested disappeared on Nov. 24. He was at a party and a shot was fired. He fled, and hasn't been heard from since. His aunt, a very close friend, helped in the search and she fears he is either dead or hiding in Denver. He has been placed on a wanted list, changed from missing, because of his involvement in the earlier meth lab arrests. Goodland Kansas is just across the state line from Burlington, Colorado.

The biggest shock to me was the news in the Burlington Record of a murder in nearby Kansas. She had rented a house from a good friend of mine out in the country. She worked in the County Clerk's office for 4 years. She recently married and moved over to Kansas, but still worked in Burlington, Colorado. She died in her truck of a gunshot wound. At first her husband said he was getting the gun out of the truck and it accidentally went off. The KBI and the sherrif's office investigated. After her autopsy, they arrested her husband of less than a year for murder. She was 27 and left two children 5 & 3. He is now under suspicion for murder of two of his friends in Texas who died mysteriously. I dealt with her often when I had to send paperwork for our car deals to the County Clerk for filing.

So, the big time has hit our small towns. So sad! I did see recently on MSNBC Investigative Reports that meth labs are very big in the midwest. Kansas was featured in the show. There is so much wide open space to hide in.
