Police over the weekend were looking for a man who allegedly tried to abduct the same 11-year-old girl twice -- on Friday and in February.

This one has a lot of nerve! I hope they catch him soon.

Call me crazy, but why would this mom allow her 11 year old to walk home from school by herself? And, "if" she knew this had happened once (and she may not have), would you not be extremely cautious and not allow anyone to have the opportunity to do this again? I hope that they catch this guy and give the mom a good lecture about watching her children!

I don't know what its like where you live, but 11 year olds are allowed to walk down the street alone, in my community.
I agree though her mom is probably terrified now.
Seems to me, the way the article was written that perhaps he's confusing this girl with a girl he knows? He yells at her but then doesn't try to force her into the car.
Perhaps he is just "scaring" her? Some people have a very odd sense of humor.
No matter what, I think we would all breath easier if he is found because he's either dangerous or whacked.

Believe me, I know that I am an overprotective mom. But, I still don't let my 13 year old walk down the street without me watching her. In my opinion, no matter where you live, you never know when you might run into some sicko. As I said, I am overprotective, but my theory is "better safe, than sorry".
I know I sure miss the days when you didn't have to worry about letting your children go out to play by themselves!

I'm overprotective too, but so must be every other parent where I live because NO ONE's 11 year old is allowed to walk around by herself. Mine never will either.

I am overprotective also. I have three kids and I cant imagine letting them go someplace alone. The world is way to dangerous nowadays.

I just would like to make something clear. I never said ANYONE was over protective. I simply mentioned that in my community (a city) an 11 yr old walking down the street, alone, especially from school, is not unusual.
Is it a different world today? YES... but then some children have been snatched from their own back yards... even in days gone by.

And remarks about being overprotective began elsewhere (and even then they weren't meant as downgrading anyone) but I wouldn't let it bother you. This is just the sort of case that makes people wonder if we are being overprotective or underprotective with our children so when someone says they know of a place where children walk alone some of us automatically question whether we are being overprotective. Warm smile to you.

Thanks Doc for your post.
I understand the worries - its a tough world out there.
Where I live, 11 yr olds do walk down the street - currently though we are all still in shock as a "family friend" recently gave a lift to a 12 yr old, raped and killed her.
