The real story:
CRYING AMBER
Late Wednesday night when Hidalgo County sheriff’s deputies thought Gloria Yvette Guel’s uncle had kidnapped her, gears were quickly set in motion to issue a statewide Amber Alert for the teen.
The 9-1-1 call that sparked the alert reported a man had beaten up another man at a house northwest of Mission and then forced a girl into a Ford Explorer, prompting the sheriff’s late-night supervisor to quickly draft the paperwork to send to the state emergency center.
The beaten man, 24-year-old Orlando Gonzalez, was badly injured.
"There was a lot of blood," said Commander Daniel Garcia, who explained Gonzalez was with hit with brass knuckles and whacked in the head with a tire iron to the point of unconsciousness.
Investigators feared the same, or even worse, for the 17-year-old girl.
It turned out the teen voluntarily left Gonzalez’s home and that she had called her uncle and the other female to pick her up.
Investigators didn’t realize this until about 11 a.m. Thursday — 12 hours after the so-called kidnapping — as they watched the Pharr house that matched the Explorer’s registration records and spotted the SUV coming up to the home.
They stopped the vehicle and found Guel and her uncle, 21-year-old David Zavala, and another unidentified female inside.
Zavala was interrogated at the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office where he admitted to physically assaulting Gonzalez, who is Guel’s boyfriend. And Guel said she left with her uncle voluntarily.
