LaQuanta is now on the Adopt a Missing Person program. For more information please see: http://www.projectjason.org/adopt.html

I will share a sample from her personal bio, written by family members. Part of the process of adopting a missing person is to get to know them on a more personal basis. They're not just a face or a statistic, they're a real person who is loved and missed.

From LaQuanta's bio:

"In 1998, she received the award of Valedictorian of her 9th grade class. The speech she delivered was very moving. She spoke of how blessed she was to have a host of mothers—her birth mother, her aunt, and her cousin—who had been her “God sent” mothers. LaQuanta is a firm believer in God and was raised in a Godly home. At an early age, she learned the benefits of prayer and she believes in prayer."

If you want to learn more about LaQuanta, you'll have to adopt her. :-)

Thank you.

Well I have my own suspicions as to why we don't hear about some people, but I don't want to be ugly on this young woman's thread. I'm glad that Lanie is there to bring these cases to our attention.

Finally Some Attention for an Ignored Case!
Black and Missing: Laws Make Search for Adults Difficult
Date: Monday, July 26, 2004
By: Associated Press

Their images on the Internet bulletin boards are haunting. Blacks, in the prime of life, who just disappeared, leaving behind family, friends and so many questions, without a trace.

Shelton Sanders, 26, often traveled between his parent’s home in Rempert, S.C. and Columbia where he attend the University of South Carolina. In June of 2001 Shelton called his father, a local judge, to say that he was headed home, but he never arrived.

Laquanta Riley, 20, was last seen getting into a green Ford Taurus or Chevy Caprice late on the night of Dec. 7, 2002. Riley’s photograph displays a woman with a calm spirit. Montgomery, Ala. police officials said Riley was last seen wearing a green and yellow shirt, blue jeans and yellow Reeboks.

The Kansas City police said that Jonathan Williams was married on June 4 1994. Williams worked as a correctional officer in the Leeds County jail. Two days after his wedding, he left home and was never seen again.

The stories of these black missing people have rarely made it to the front pages of newspapers across the country. Their loved ones haven't been interviewed on the television networks' morning talk shows.
Yet, while these blacks remain missing, the nation has become quite familiar with a number of high profile cases like those of Chandra Levy, a Capitol Hill intern and love interest of a Congressman, whose bones were found in Washington D.C. Rock Creek Park ; Laci Peterson, a pregnant Modesto, Calif. woman who was allegedly killed by her husband Scott Peterson, after her body and the fetus washed up in San Francisco Bay ; and now Lori Kay Hacking, a pregnant Salt Lake City woman, whose disappearance last week has sparked another national search.

Is it a double standard? Is it racism? Why do young, white women who go missing get so much media attention while blacks who disappear do not? And why aren't black leaders talking about the seemingly disparate treatment?

“The issue of Laci Peterson is a lot different because it was clear that she was killed,” Brian K. Jordan, deputy chief of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C., told BlackAmericaWeb.com. “In the case of Chandra Levy what made the story was her relationship with a member of Congress. This is not to minimize any other cases, but that is what made that a story.” Peterson was missing about four months before her decomposed body was found.

According to the FBI National Crime Information Center, 840,279 adults and juveniles were reported missing in 2001. The FBI also estimates that 85 to 90 percent of these cases were juveniles.

In 1990 Congress passed the National Child Search Act that was eventually signed into law. While the country is familiar with the Amber Alert system, family and friends often face a tougher challenge tracking down and finding adults when they disappear, according to a law enforcement official.

“One of the things that makes it difficult is with adults it is not the same as a juvenile,” said Jordan. “A juvenile should be answering to somebody, but with an adult, they can move to another city, no one hears from them, and even if you find them, you can’t tell another person where they are.”

Sheriff Department officials in Sumpter County, S.C. said that they couldn’t talk about Shelton Sanders case.

Sanders parents were not available, but someone who answered the phone at the family’s home said that every day they hope for a break in the case.

There was a body found under a bridge on the northern bypass in Montgomery last week. There was a short blurb on the news but that was all. The bridge the remains were under is inspected every two years so that would limit the time frame and Laquanta was my first thought. They haven't indicated whether the person was male or female and there have been no further reports. There are so few bodies ever found in the Montgomery area. I'll let you know if/when anything else comes out.

I heard it on the radio and then there was nothing else about it. I asked an engineer in the maintenance bureau of the department of transportation and he said that they hadn't heard any additional information about it. That's how things go around Montgomery I'm afraid, not much news unless there's lots of drama.

I'll give him a call back and see if they've been told anything. I also emailed the news editor to see where the article might be. I'm too curiuos.

Bump! Is there any news on this yet? I am bumping for Laquanta anyway because her family has suffered enough- they have already lost their other daughter in tragic circumstances.........

Please visit laquantas site and sign the guestbook so her family know you are there..............

I saw it had only 1342 hits- which is so little ..........

War Eagle to y'all too. There is absolutely no news except for the very brief info I heard on the radio. I'm thinking it might have been a transient or someone quickly identified. Dunno, wierd huh? I'm not thinking it is her because I think there would have been some news.

Personally, I don't think she went far. I keep listening though.

LaQuanta Riley has been missing since 12/7/03. We've had a website up for her for more than 2 years.

In that time, only 5 people have signed her guestbook.

I wonder what her family must feel when they look at that. It would appear that Laquanta is forgotten by everyone other than her immediate family.

No one passes around emails about LaQuanta, either.

Can you take just 1-2 minutes to sign her guestbook?

Actually, it's a moderated guestbook to keep out Spam. I think what is happening is that the webmaster is not around to approve the messages, so you won't see what you posted until she approves the messages. You think it didn't work, so you try again and it gives you the double post message.

Thanks for doing that!

Kelly, thank you :blowkiss:
So many of us do care and it really hurts my heart to even think about these cases and what the families are going through. I honestly don't remember seeing Laquanta's case at the time of her disappearance possibly because there was a lot going on with Laci's case at the time. Sometimes they get pushed back also when there are a lot of them going on all around the same time. It's great when someone is able to review the older ones and bump them up for others attention. I know I appreciate that.

Good find Doc, I looked on intellius and there is a Laquanta Riley that lived in Gwinnett Ga at some point with a Pamela Riley. I wonder when that post was made to that site about the dress. There was also a Jeffrey Riley in the house, and a Antoinette Riley in the same household.

Thanks. The first name used on a profile of a music.com site was "LaQuanta." I think only an init (or letter) was used on the last name (which was not an "R") but the statement on that page was that her friends called her "Quan". That made me wonder if our missing LaQuanta used the same nickname and if so then when running websearches I should include and watch out for that nickname.

About the dress company webpage: I hope L.E. is tracking to see if she ever orders any more dresses from them.

Honestly it sort of sounds like this may be a case of an adult(over 18 yrs old) runaway. At least I do not see evidence of a crime so far. If she stays alive it is possible that the SS#'s will show activity, perhaps in a few years if none is already showing. While there is life there is hope.

Candles of Hope for LaQuanta

December 7th, 2007 will mark 4 years since the family of then 19 year-old LaQuanta Riley saw or spoke to her.

LaQuanta disappeared from Montgomery, AL, and was last seen by relatives at approximately 11:30pm getting into a green car, either a Taurus or Caprice. She was wearing a yellow and green Ecko shirt, stone-washed blue jeans, and green and yellow Reebok tennis shoes. There are no leads in LaQuanta's case and the family clings to the hope that someday she will be found.

To honor and remember LaQuanta, her family will be hosting a vigil of hope for LaQuanta. The vigil will be held on 5:30pm on December 7th, 2007 at the Hayneville Road Community Center, 3315 Hayneville Road, Montgomery, AL 36108. The public is invited to attend.

At the vigil of hope, LaQuanta's family and friends will place candles, one per week since LaQuanta's disappearance, for a total of 208 candles. Her family is a simple one, and LaQuanta's case never generated much interest with the media or the public, so Project Jason is asking for your help.

To show this grieving, but yet hopeful family that we do care, we are asking for you to help the family reach their goal of acquiring 208 candles for use at the vigil, with at least one from each state in the US.

Would you consider purchasing a candle to send to the family? If everyone helps, it should be easy to reach our goal.

If you'd like to help, here's all you'd need to do:

Purchase a candle which is free-standing and will not allow wax to drip down the sides or out the bottom while lit.

Attach a message of hope for LaQuanta's family and note your state on the card.

Mail your candle, allowing enough shipping time to reach Montgomery AL by December 3rd, 2007.

Indicate on the note if you prefer to remain anonymous.

If you'd like to purchase a themed candle, LaQuanta's favorite color is blue, she likes music, cooking, and has a great love of the Bible and God.

Mail your candle to:

Candles of Hope for LaQuanta
244 Cornell Rd.
Montgomery AL 36109

Updates on the candle campaign will be published here, along with any media stories about LaQuanta:
http://www.projectjason.org/forums/index.php?topic=450

LaQuanta also has a website, which you can find at http://www.findlaquanta.com/ Please sign the guestbook as another way to show your support, and forward this message so that we can meet our Candles of Hope for LaQuanta campaign goal.

Thank you.

I've only heard from 2 people about this. That doesn't mean that no one else is going to do it. I sure hope we will have a good response, as I encouraged the family to do it, trusting that surely we could find 208 kind people in the US.

I have to wonder if this was for Natalee Holloway, also from AL, if this thread would be filled with responses.

Thanks to those who already have a candle purchase on their shopping list!

Candles of Hope for LaQuanta is a campaign to find 208 different people from all over the country to mail one candle to the family in time for their prayer vigil on December 7th. This prayer vigil marks 4 years since LaQuanta Riley disappeared from her home in Montgomery, AL. 208 candles will give the family one per week since they last saw their LaQuanta.

To my knowledge, we only have about 12 people participating, so we still need 196 more.

Jar candles are the best choice and you can get one for less than $5. Check your dollar stores. Get your co-workers to buy one too, and then pitch in on mailing the candles together in one box.

Post my blog entry about the campaign on community bulletin boards online and email it to your friends. There are many ways you can help this family feel like they (and LaQuanta) haven't been forgotten.

Thank you!

Here are a couple of links where you can purchase a candle online:

Ambient Aromas (http://www.dardar.scent-team.com/) - the owner of Ambient Aromas has pledged to donate all proceeds - from candles sold from now until November 7th - to LaQuanta's family.
http://www.dardar.scent-team.com/

Flameless Candles (http://www.flamelesscandles.net/) - battery operated candles, reasonably priced (batteries included). A great alternative to flame candles.
http://www.flamelesscandles.net/

I bought mine at White Barn (http://www.bathandbodyworks.com/category/index.jsp?categoryId=2488627&cp=2484529&cm_re_o=ZBkbpzYGG%20Z2CjClA_n_.vCjCmgwEfwp%202zEpk wl) (owned by Bath and Body Works) and they also have online ordering. They have a lot of different types of candles too!

I hope these options will encourage others to help LaQuanta's family by sending a candle!

Thank you, both!

I'm doing a candle drive at work, and will be shipping the candles to the family next week. I am footing the bill for the shipping so the givers just need to supply the candle and their personal note.

So far, the family has only received two candles out of a goal of 208. There are two weeks left to go until the vigil, and less than two weeks shipping time. Please consider helping.

This update is not a final one and is from candles received by Thursday. 29 states were represented and 56 candles received. If you count tealights individually, the goal of 208 candles was surpassed. As the vigil was last night, I will give the family some time to let us know the final update and how the vigil went. Thank you to all who participated. May God bless you and yours abundantly.

From the Family:

“I would like to thank each and every person who sent a candle or said a prayer during our prayer vigil. It was because of your thoughtfulness that we were able to accomplish the prayer vigil.

It gives us hope and strength to know that so many people care about LaQuanta and are helping to bring her home. I would like to give a special thanks to Kelly Jolkowski and all those at Project Jason, without whose help none of this would have been possible. I will continue to pray for all those who are missing as I pray for my daughter and all those who are praying. I ask that you continue to pray, because I am convinced that God does and will answer prayers.

Forever grateful,
Pam”
