Bumping case up. I posted this almost a year ago and there have been 86 viewings, but no comments.

Not much to go on with this case, and it would seem that she simply left home and never returned. Don't know if her disappearance was ever reported at the time.

It would be nice to hear more details of this case.

I found someone by the same name in the Social Security Death Index, but the birth date does not match:

Name: FLORA LIGON
Birthdate: 27 Dec 1909
Death date: May 1983
Last zip code: 35401 (Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa, AL)
SSN: 422-14-7644
Issuing state: Alabama

A couple of points/observations:

- It's not clear what kind of store Flora was heading for, but back in the '50s there were lots more corner/Mom & Pop stores that people tended to go to in their own neighborhoods, as opposed to jumping in the car for Stop & Shop. I'm guessing that Flora was also walking to a neighborhood store? If so, did the store owner see her arrive? Did any area residents see her on the way?

- How much money did Flora take? A dollar or two for a quick grocery trip, or more? I'm thinking that if she had money hidden in a special hiding spot, she wouldn't have bothered to do so unless she had a fairly significant stash in there. Was anything left over after she was gone?

- The only family mentioned is the little girl. Was there a man in Flora's life? Was she maybe escaping a bad marriage or relationship, or maybe that someone had reason to want to hurt her?

- Why is it believed Flora may have gone to one of the listed areas? Was she from there? Had friends or family there? etc.

On Porchlight International's message board, someone posted that Flora Ligon's (if it is in fact the same Flora Ligon) mother's name was Iowa Carter and that she died April 14, 1938.

The poster also said that Flora has ties to the Gastonia and Hayesville areas of North Carolina.
