Niceville teen denies helping her suitor fake her kidnapping
Associated Press

NICEVILLE, Fla. - A 15-year-old girl who left home with a 23-year-old suitor says she neither ran away from home nor was kidnapped although he made it look like an abduction.

Police found Janelle Adkins unharmed Tuesday at the home of Alex Gonzalez's uncle in Troy, Ala., a day after she vanished from her bedroom. Investigators earlier had detained Gonzalez in Slocomb, Ala., and he told them where the girl was staying.

Janelle, back home with her parents, Thursday said Gonzalez was solely responsible for faking her kidnapping and did not force her to go.

"He came up with everything," Janelle said. "I would have never thought of all that, ever. I didn't even help him out, planning it."

Her disappearance triggered an Amber Alert, designed to rapidly notify law enforcement agencies and the public of a missing child under 18 who may be in danger.

The sophomore and star soccer player at Rocky Bayou Christian School left home after her parents refused to let her date Gonzalez, police said. They met while working together at a Mexican restaurant.

Gonzalez remained Friday at the Okaloosa County Jail in Crestview under a $50,000 bond. He is charged with interference with child custody and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He declined an interview request.

Adkins said Gonzalez showed up outside her bedroom window around 2:30 a.m. Monday and used a box cutter to remove the window screen and wore gloves so he wouldn't leave fingerprints.

"Right when I got in the car, I knew it was wrong," she said. "I can't say I was kidnapped because he didn't take me or force me by gun or grab me and just jerk me out, but I did not run away."

Adkins said they drove to Gonzalez's father's house in Dothan, spent the night then went to Troy. Gonzalez spoke by phone Monday to Janelle's father, Ed, who urged him to return. The girl said Gonzalez had spoken of taking her to Dothan for weeks.

"He told me he loved me and that he cared about me and he was going to take care of every thing I needed," she said. "I believed everything he told me."

I am so glad to here that this child is back home. to many times kids her age are never heard from again, these kids need to realize that when a person like the one that took her off with him, make statements that he will take care of her and take care of every need that should be a warning sign to get away from that person. its is so good to know this child is safe at home, but I feel that her parents need to keep a better eye on this one, since she said that her parents didn't want her dating this man. well YEA he is to old to be dating a 15 year old girl. I hope the parents of this child reads some of the forums here on websleuths, it sure would be a eye opener for her and her child. when I first read about the amber alert I thought that this was going to be another child lost for good. god bless this child and her parents.. :)
