RALEIGH - A young pregnant mother found dead in her home on Friday afternoon was the victim of homicide, according to sheriff's investigators.
A family member discovered the body of Michelle Marie Young, 29, on Friday just before 1:30 p.m. in her two-story brick home at 5108 Birchleaf Drive. Her husband was out of town, and their 2-year-old daughter was in the house but unharmed.

Write up in newsobserver re; pregnancy, statistics of deaths. (Mentions Michelle and others)

[quote]The news that Michelle Fisher Young had been beaten to death at her home in a quiet subdivision south of Raleigh was shocking enough. That Young was four months pregnant only made it worse. But it's not all that unusual.

Homicide is the leading cause of death among pregnant women, according to some studies. Others have found it is a leading cause of death among pregnant women and mothers of newborns. Young, who expected to deliver a boy in the spring, was just the latest in a long list of women whose lives were cut short as they tried to bring a new life into the world. [quote]

While the discovery of the tooth was coming to light, another source tells eyewitness news that wake investigators looking into young's death are in the mountain town of Brevard today.

The Transylvania county sheriff says his office has been contacted to assist with fingerprinting relatives and friends of Jason Young, who sources say is back home in the Brevard area with his two year-old daughter.

Wake's sheriff confirms his investigators are in the mountains. "We have a lot of leads, over 65 that we're following up on," says Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison. "We go wherever that takes us. And that's probably what they're doing today," he continued.

"But a piece of evidence that was missed were tests to determine whether Young was sexually assaulted.

According to the autopsy report, the North Carolina medical examiner never performed any, which means investigators cannot rule out sexual assault as a motive for the crime.

North Carolina medical examiner John Butts said such tests are only performed when there is obvious evidence at the scene or on the victim's body of sexual assault or when law enforcement officers request it.
"Collection of such (rape) kits is not routine for female homicide victims, unless they fall into these categories," Butts said.

Still no arrest in Michelle Young murder

05/03/2007 08:50 PM

By: Ann Forte

RALEIGH -- Work men were installing new carpet inside 5108 Birchleaf Dr., Thursday afternoon. The workers say no one is living there right now, six months after Michelle Young was found beaten to death inside.
Her killer has not been caught.

"We'd like to solve it, of course, quickly, but it's such a complex case, we have to make sure we get our information correct," explained Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison.

A pregnant 29-year-old Young was found dead inside her home on Nov. 3, 2006. Her two-year-old daughter, Cassidy, was also found in the home, unhurt. Young’s family pleaded for help in solving the case.

In November, Linda Fisher, Michelle’s mother, told reporters, "I'm asking for anyone who has seen or heard anything -- as trivial as you might think it is, anything -- to please come forward and help find the person who murdered my daughter."

Attention has centered on Young’s husband, Jason Young. Previously released court documents show the couple was having financial problems before Michelle died, and Jason Young stood to benefit financially from his wife's death.

snipped...

A similar case in Durham is still unsolved. It has been two years, and police still do not know who murdered a pregnant mother in Durham. Janet Abaroa was found dead in her home in April 2005.

Michelle Young's family and friends want to know why justice hasn't yet been served. The Youngs' neighbors in the Enchanted Oaks subdivision south of Raleigh want to know when the frenzy that has inundated their quiet neighborhood will go away.

The grief won't go away

Ruth Sheehan, Staff Writer

I had barely identified myself on the phone when Linda Fisher began to sob.
She knew why I was calling before I said another word.

Fisher of Sayville, N.Y., is the mother of Michelle Young, who -- like Nancy Cooper of Cary -- was a young vivacious mother, killed in her prime.

Young, 29, was found beaten to death in her home in Raleigh's Enchanted Oaks subdivision on Nov. 3, 2006. She was five months pregnant.

I know I'm not the only person who has wondered about Young's family as we've watched Cooper's loved ones mourn in recent weeks.

As it turns out, Fisher was in Raleigh, visiting her younger daughter Meredith in mid-July when Cooper's body was discovered at a construction site near her Lochmere home.

...........................snip................... ......

Fisher met with Wake County investigators during her July visit.

She repeated what the investigators say: "They're working on the case, and they're making progress."

Beyond that, she is sworn to silence. "There's so much I can't talk about, but there's so much I want to say."

Michelle Young probe focuses on husband

............snip.....................
Investigators found two footprints in blood on a pillow in the Youngs' bedroom. One of the impressions was similar to the design of a pair of Hush Puppies that Young owned, according to the affidavit. The other footprint was from an athletic shoe. The affidavit noted that Young bought Hush Puppies and two pairs of athletic shoes in July 2005 from a store in Cary.

They also found a blood splatter that might have been a print on the bedroom wall near Young's body. The State Bureau of Investigation found that DNA from the spot matched Jason Young's DNA, according to the affidavit.

The night before Michelle Young's body was found, Jason Young checked into a Hampton Inn in Hillsville, Va., about 170 miles from Raleigh, according to the affidavit. A hotel security camera captured an image of Young, wearing a dark pullover, heading to a a hotel exit about midnight.

The exit door had a rock in the door jam that kept the door from locking automatically and allowed people to enter without using a keycard, according to the affidavit. Young's keycard was not used to re-enter the hotel.

Investigators suspect that Young's vehicle was at his home in Enchanted Oaks between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. the next morning, when a newspaper delivery person saw a light-colored SUV at the Young residence. The SUV, which was similar to Jason Young's white Ford Explorer, was "parked in such a manner that it appeared to have been unloading or loading something," the investigator said in the affidavit.

In the affidavit, the investigator also noted that Young was not wearing the dark pullover when he arrived at his mother's home in Brevard in the late afternoon of Nov. 3. Instead, he was wearing a white shirt and tie.

Attorney: Detectives building case around Jason Young

RALEIGH, N.C. — A former federal prosecutor says that newly released search warrants in the 2006 murder case of Michelle Young show investigators seem to be building a case around her husband, Jason Young.

"Reading between the lines of the search warrant, he's their primary suspect," Kieran Shanahan said Tuesday.

Husband's DNA found at fatal beating scene

A mother waits, prays for justice
Michelle Young was killed in her home

RALEIGH - After nearly two years, Linda Fisher still prays daily that the person responsible for the death of her daughter, Michelle Young, will be brought to justice.
Young, 29, was found dead in the home she shared with her husband, Jason Young, in the Enchanted Oaks subdivision south of Raleigh. As with the Nancy Cooper case this summer, investigators have focused on Young's husband but have not identified him as a suspect.

The pregnant young mother was lying on her bed in a pool of blood on Nov. 3, 2006. Bloody footprints from their 2-year-old daughter, Cassidy, who was unharmed, trailed across the carpet.

A search warrant unsealed last month indicated Wake County deputies found DNA and bloody footprints that linked Jason Young to the crime scene. Sheriff's deputies have been investigating whether he checked into a Virginia hotel and then drove back to Raleigh that night.

Amanda, I read your book "Deadly Dose" and thought it was well written. Do you plan to write a book about the Michelle Young case after the trial? – Carol Padgett, Creedmoor

I am currently in the process of deciding the topic of my next book. There are clearly a lot of interesting local cases to choose from. I keep good notes on all of the cases I cover. But I did learn from my "Deadly Dose" publisher that crimes must be solved before you can write a book about them. This is for two reasons – one, legal liability, two, the reader needs some satisfaction, some closure to the story.

Michelle Young's slaying remains unsolved

CARY - Those who loved Michelle Young gathered Sunday around the two granite hearts that mark her grave -- a large one inscribed for the young mother who died two years ago today, a small one tucked inside and marked "Rylan" for the son she was carrying.

.....................snip.......................

The somber anniversary comes just days after the arrest of Brad Cooper on murder charges in the slaying of his wife, Nancy -- the case of another suburban couple with young children and a seemingly bright future shattered by sudden violence.

Cooper was found dead in an empty cul-de-sac near her Cary home July 14. Attention quickly focused on Brad Cooper, who was arrested Oct. 27.

Carol Nelson, a friend and co-worker of Young's at Progress Energy, said she was heartened by the arrest in the Cooper case. Nelson has developed a keen sense in the past two years of how an unsolved murder can weigh on a victim's loved ones.

But she is frustrated that while Brad Cooper faces murder charges, Michelle Young's case remains unsolved.

...............snip...........................

Sheriff Donnie Harrison said there are no new suspects in the case, but he hopes to make an arrest "in the near future."

"We talk about this case nearly every day," Harrison said in an interview last week. "It's something that's still fresh."

Wake sheriff weighs in on Jason Young lawsuit

Raleigh, N.C. — Wake County Sheriff Donnie Harrison says he is not surprised by a wrongful death lawsuit filed against the husband of a slain Wake County mother found dead inside her home two years ago this week.

"It's something I felt was coming," Harrison said Wednesday. "And my reaction is I think it was due and the right thing to do."

Michelle Young's mother, Linda Fisher, filed the lawsuit last Wednesday against her son-in-law, Jason Young, saying "he brutally murdered" her daughter.

Among them: real estate searches and owner listing information for their home at the time, 5108 Birchleaf Drive; the term "ischemia," which is a decrease in the blood supply caused by constriction or obstruction to blood vessels; "head trauma knockout" and "anatomy of a knockout."

According to an affidavit accompanying the warrant, investigators also searched Jason Young's phone records from Oct. 4, 2006 to Nov. 3, 2006. On the day Michelle Young died, he made 28 calls – more than any other day during the time period of the records.

Young's computer used to research 'knockout'

...................snip........................

Among investigators' statements in the 15-page document made public Thursday:

* Jason Young hung up on a Wake County sheriff's detective who called him the day Michelle Young's body was found. Young refused to come to the house and "did not inquire as to his daughter's wellbeing or the nature and/or cause of his wife's death."

* Jason Young and the woman with whom he was having an affair exchanged about 980 phone calls and text messages between Oct. 4 and Nov. 3, 2006.

* Young's computer was used to search the Internet on topics including "anatomy of a knockout," "head trauma knockout," and "divorce" before his wife was found dead.

* In e-mail, Young wrote to his sister about the investigation and his attorney: "His ONLY concern is for me and that hopefully there will NEVER be an arrest."
