Thanks for sharing that update. Once again, the POI refuses to cooperate and avoids being asked the vital questions. I hate the way the law allows them to hide from the truth.

Got the willies when I clicked on the news article. I lived in Columbia about 20 odd years ago, and went to high school with a family of Shockeys. Talk about wack-a-doos! I wonder if her boyfriend is any relation?

Sorry, just the random weirdness of a small world . . . when I was in high school I went with a Samantha Smith, Jones or Johnson. . . can't remember. She was found dead under a bridge not long after graduation. The name plus South Carolina caught my eye.

Are there any animals in those woods that may have attacked her???

Wouldn't they have found evidence of remains in that case?

She didn't die there. She had to have been abducted. Was she so depressed that she would commit suicide over the argument? What about her asthma? I wonder if it was very bad where she needed her medication all the time. I know people who have minor asthma and don't need treatment on a daily basis.

Clues scarce after discovery of human remains in Florence
Posted: Jan 29, 2010 12:15 PM EST Updated: Feb 03, 2010 10:34 AM EST

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Florence Police continue to search for clues after human remains were found inside a vacant home on Jan. 29.

Florence Police Chief Anson Shells says demolition workers were getting ready to demolish the home at 520 Charles St. when they knocked over a tub containing human remains. The remains, according to investigators, were found around 11 a.m.

Florence County Coroner Bubba Matthews says he and investigators have reason to believe the remains are that of a female. Matthews estimates the remains are two to three years old.

By searching public records I see that Samantha's boyfriend seems to be living in the same place as he was when she went missing. I wonder if LE has ever done any searches around there?

Skeletal remains found near Clinton gun range

Crime scene investigators are currently on the scene. Clinton Department of Public Safety Director Robin Morse said they are working to I.D. the remains and believe the body could be related to a missing persons report filed with the City of Clinton back in 2006.

That's awfully close to where Samantha lived with her boyfriend. Since the article above mentions a case from 2006 when Samantha went missing, her family might have some answers finally.

This article has a little more information about the original search, but not much:
http://www.clintonchronicle.com/articles/2014/03/26/news/doc533303665e744259024582.txt

"At the time of Smith’s disappearance, Thomas said law enforcement was not focusing on the boyfriend.

“Right now, our attention is not on him,” Thomas is quoted as saying, “it’s on finding her.”"

Article with some pictures, from before she was identified:

http://www.clintonchronicle.com/articles/2014/03/26/news/doc533220d332cf5167707878.txt

"The remains were found about 200 yards from the highway shoulder, and investigators had to descend a 45 degree embankment and cross a muddy ditch just to get to the edge of the woods."

Her poor mother was on the news tonight and said she asked the police if the remains had braces on the teeth. They said yes and she knew this was her daughter. She sobbed, and it was heart breaking. I hope this mother can get the answers she needs.

I hope it brings some comfort to her loved ones to have her back so she can be laid to rest. Now I hope there is something that can lead to who ever did this to her. They say 5 to miles away is usually where you will find victims.Shame she was not found sooner.Hope DNA or some clues were found with her.

RIP Samantha

RIP Samantha. My heart broke reading when she went missing with her mom and step dad's words. Just heartbreaking. Now that she's been found, it's just as heartbreaking to read how her mom feels, it's horrible after so many years.

RIP Samantha & many prayers for the family to heal somehow.

For whatever it's worth - I read a quote from a Clinton public safety officer that stated W.S. has been ruled out as a suspect, but is still considered a person of interest.

I have no idea, either...

But... Could it mean he has a good alibi... But that he may know what happened?

and may be involved in some way?

"it doesn’t appear any foul play was involved"

I am sure there was no evidence that foul play wasn't involved...

With a body exposed to the elements since 2006, I can only assume that means nothing except there was no perfect round hole (gunshot wound) to her skull.

I think the response should've been "At this point in the investigation, it's too early to tell if foul play was involved.

(All my opinion only)

Usually, a person of interest is someone who has information LE needs, so they are interested in talking with them. Since he was the one she had the argument with, and she left his house (the one they shared), LE would want to find out exactly which way she went, what time she left, etc. it is possible someone else saw her leave the house, so LE says W.S. has been ruled out. To my mind that would only be ruled out for that particular time frame. It doesn't mean she didn't come home when no one saw her and something else happened.
