Woman missing after leaving Vernon bar

State police seek information on Laura Zeglin

June 12, 2007

State police are searching for a 19-year-old Canastota woman who was last seen early Saturday morning after leaving a Vernon bar.

Laura Zeglin left Nothin' Fancy Café around 2 a.m. with an unknown male, troopers said, and was reported to be heading toward a party in the Rome or Utica area.
Katrina Zeglin said Tuesday evening that her daughter has never gone this long without contacting her family.

"I'm extremely worried," Zeglin said. "I certainly pray that it's different, but I just have a feeling it's really, really bad."

Zeglin lives at home with her parents and is in-between jobs, her mother said. She was a regular at Nothin' Fancy Café, her mother said.

Zeglin's family discovered she was missing Saturday morning. That's when her best friend, Danielle Cole of Canastota, called the house to ask Zeglin's whereabouts, said Katrina Zeglin, who thought her daughter had spent the night at a friend's house.

Nearly a year ago, Michelle Hutchings, 28, of Utica disappeared after last being seen on Bleecker Street. In January, the body of 30-year-old Jennifer Bennett of Utica was found near the Deerfield Firehouse. Both women had common acquaintances, but police have not said the two incidents were linked.

In Hutchings' case, the Oneida County district attorney eventually set up a joint law-enforcement task force to investigate her disappearance.

Katrina Zeglin said she does not believe her daughter ran away. It's unlike her not to stay in contact, Zeglin said.

"I hope we get the chance to yell at her, and tell her what a foolish thing she did," Zeglin said. "I hope we get that chance."

If anyone has seen Laura Zeglin or has information to her whereabouts, please call state police at 366-6000.

State Police say 19-year-old Laura Zeglin was last seen early Saturday morning leaving the Nothin' Fancy café in Vernon with an unknown man. Investigators thought she may have gone to an after-hours party in the Utica or Rome area.
