LOS ANGELES -- Federal officials have posted a reward for the gunman who shot to death four dolphins.

The animals' bodies washed ashore in the San Diego area between May 29 and June 5.

A spokesman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration calls the killings "horrendous."

Examinations revealed that the dolphins, which were healthy with bellies full of fish, may have been shot at the same time with the same gun. Four had between one and three bullets of the same caliber in the same part of their heads.

Federal officials said that nationwide, they normally get one report of a dolphin shooting a year. An official said it usually turns out to be a commercial fisherman.

A $2,500 reward is being offered. http://www.wsbtv.com/news/13514421/detail.html

My first post!

And I'm posting on this thread to say that I have no words on this. Wait, yes I do. I hope whoever did this gets what is coming to him. I can't even imagine the sick, evil, twisted person who could do this. No doubt, he is also killed humans in the past, or will do so in the future.

You can judge ALOT about a person by the way they treat animals.

Thanks JBean & IndyGal for the warm welcome! :)

I don't understand this WHY??? Why would anyone shoot innocent beautiful dolphins? The story said that there is usually one reported occurrence of a dolphin being shot every year, and that it is usually a fisherman who does it. Why in the world would a fisherman shoot a dolphin???

I have no tolerance for people who hurt animals.

We have a thread for this in the Pet Forum.

Eleven, welcome!

TO answer your question ...... IMO you have a vast majority of weekend boaters that are total A$$holes..
They go out and are most often drinking all day in the hot sun...
They have no regard for the boating laws or the environment.
Where I live (on an island) boating is a major hobby.
We see idiots like this all the time. We would probably see a lot more dolphin deaths if it was not for the shear number of boaters...
There would be little chance of not getting caught here..
It is rare to be the only boat out on these waters.

Do you think someone stupidly thought they were sharks? I know that sounds ridiculous, but on a recent boat ride (where we were escorted by a school of dolphins) an idiot actually yelled, "Omg, SHARKS!"
