I think LE found out about the source of the photo after they went public with it. I think they cleaned it up because they thought the unretouched photo would be too graphic for the general population. Don't forget that people like us here at WS's are somewhat more conditioned to the horrors of the world, but a lot of people are really upset by pictures like this. For instance, I saved the picture in a Word document and emailed it to myself at work. I then showed it to some of my co-workers and shared it with a Pathologist I work with; who didn't add any information that you guys hadn't already noticed, by the way. One of the guys I showed it to, considers himself pretty tough. He had been in my office talking about other stuff and I told him about the case. I opened the Word document with the picture and asked him to come around to my side of the desk and look at it. He immediately sort of straightened up and said "I don't know", and walked out of my office! I was like, WTF? He was obviously upset by the picture, and I think LE thought they would get a lot of complaints if they had posted the unretouched photo for the general public. Also, can you imagine how the family of someone who was local would have felt if the victim had been local, and the family had recognized her? I truly think LE can learn from this case, and use resources like the people here at Websleuths with future cases like this.

Ok, friends. I got the pm (thanks Indy!) and this really sounds as though IF it is an ongoing case, it is in Iraq.....I'm guessing it's "case closed" here in USA.

God is good, and hopefully the Iraqis/American investigative forces in Iraq will not drop the ball....praying that justice is obtained for our girl.

I am still in awe at how a young woman in Iraq brought so many of us together, and how she has impacted my life.

Really enjoyed sleuthing with y'all, and I'll join y'all next go round.

God bless.

You're welcome. I figured I'd go to the source and ask the Sheriff. I found it odd that the press release was retracted. I really think that they pulled it because the person came forward after it was released to the media.

This young woman really brought us all together. This is a wonderful community with some brilliant minds and I am so glad to be a part of it. Now if we can just figure out who Princess Blue is, then I'll be a happy camper. ;)

I just wanted to say, I read these threads, couldn't add anything, but interest and concern.

You guys and gals rock rock rock! All that worked so hard, you were on it. This thread was unfortunately fascinating and intriguing. It was good from the beginning to the last drop.

This thread should be a national Best Seller. It's awesome. That's what this forum is all about. This thread ought to be used as a forerunner, introduction to anyone that's searching the internet for true real crime, crime solving, etc... It just doesn't get any better than this.

If someone wants to know what websleuths is all about, this should pop up.

Congratulations, sleuthers, may this girl be in Paradise, Bless you all.

One of the posters immediately jumped on the fact that it looked like the girl's eyebrows had been threaded. Can you tell me what is it about her eyebrows that made you think that? I just thought they had been really tweezed.

Reannan, thank you so much for thinking of me.

I have been out of town and was actually in Purcell this afternoon. I just got back to Texas tonight. My mom did not have the newspaper with the original story, however, I looked through the last one (she got it yesterday I think) and there was nothing about this poor lady. There has also not been anything else on the news. I am frustrated that WE know more than the local people. Like the rest of you, this case has haunted me. I have loved reading all the theories and I agree, this has been a great learning experience.

My concern now is who is this guy who printed out this horrible picture and carried it out to Woody's? I think it freaks me out because my parents are older and live soooo close to where it was found.....

You are welcome OxieTexan! Thank YOU for having taken the time to go on-site and interview the staff in the gas station where the photo was left! JanetElaine, I sent you the PM. Lizzybeth, I think the reason the eyebrows were so noticeable was because they were so very sculpted and so neatly done. Here is a link to what I learned about threading: http://www.hotashes.com.au/wp/?p=18
I had another thought while discussing the case with some friends over dinner. Perhaps she was a victim of torture for politcal purposes. I don't really think it would have been the Hussein regime because she looks to have been in a residence, and I believe Sadaam had people taken to torture houses designed for that purpose....and I don't think they would have been provided cool looking royal blue throbes. I can totally see her having been tortured and killed by one of the many existing factions in Iraq if they thought she was a spy. I can also go along with the KISS method and believe that she is one of many, many, women who have been murdered by their family because they were simply ACCUSED (they don't even have to be guilty) of some atrocious crime like falling in love with someone who wasn't signed, sealed, and delivered by dear old Papa. I am a bit amazed at the spirit of solidarity I feel towards this woman. The fact that she was in Iraq when she was murdered is not helping me with the need to see someone brought to justice....or at least be informed that justice HAS taken place. There is just something in her face that seems kind, and as another poster had said, she looks....resigned. Perhaps, I am to the point of romanticizing her, but I also see a hint of defiance in her look. I will NEVER feel resigned to anyone being victimized like she obviously was. I wish there was a way for an artist to paint her face-on as she would have looked while still alive. I think I would have liked her as a person.

For anyone who still needs a PM , I will be online for a little while tonight. I can't figure out who has it and who doesn't because more than one is sending it out and we are duplicating. So if anyone needs a PM please PM me and let me know. If you post it here on the public board you may get several!:p

Also Jaded is expecting to hear back from the sheriff again on Monday about whether or not this is still an open investigation. If he says no I think she may have more info for us but I'm not sure. But at least if he says no then we can talk openly about what was in the PM, oh but not until then tho! If it is still open we are stuck with what we've got until he gives Jaded more facts. OK, that's all I know for now! Have a great Saturday eve everyone!

Jacobean was the first to notice, what a good catch that was! The minute she said that, I thought "OH, YEAH."

Threaded eyebrows are so beautifully sculpted, the arch is almost always perfect. It does not damage the skin the way plucking and waxing do....when you save this picture to your computer and zoom in on her eyebrows, the skin around them looks as smooth as a baby's.

I don't know what jacobean first noticed, but once she said it, for me it was the beautiful shape of her eyebrow.

The similar picture I found was identified as a "silk velvet thobe" "Thobe" seems to be more commonly used to identify the robe that Islamic/Arabic men wear as an outergarment, but it is sometimes used in reference to women's clothing. VERY similar garments are called abyahs.....there are several names, really.

It is interesting to note that we here in USA are assuming her garment was meant for indoor use, hanging around the house use, but that is not necessarily the case. These garments are advertised for outdoor use, party wear, hostess dresses, etc. So our girl may not have been in her jammies ready for bed.

My husband has mentioned to me that this may be a case of Suni/****e violence. Something totally unrelated to "sex crime" or family violence. He just might be right, although I STILL feel like there is something about her pose........

I think you are right. The far reaching aspects of this case doesn't preclude the fact it traveled halfway around the world and ended up on some gas station driveway in Oklahoma. (Which makes me question if LE has all the facts on this one yet.)

I'd like a PM too.

I took one look at the picture when this thread began and I haven't been able to come back. The woman's face has haunted me, and I feel so sad for her. I see her when I close my eyes sometimes. :(

If the mystery has been solved, I'd like to know what happened.

I'm so proud of the people here that get involved in cases like this. Your hearts are bigger than the universe. :blowkiss:

I've just been amazed at what everyone could come up with with that one picture. Maybe some of you guys have missed your calling. LE could probably use you.

I think there might have been more to the pose than what we saw also. Not necessarily a sex crime but a crime where they wanted to humiliate or degrade the person. I think whoever did this is pure evil. If it is one of our military I certainly hope they're able to trace this back to them and get them out of Iraq and out of society. If you take a picture of something like this it would suggest to me that you enjoyed it and more than likely just looking at the picture isn't going to be enough and you'll have to kill again. Maybe I've been watching too many crime shows.

Once again though I'd like to compliment everyone on their ability to spot the most minute things and come up with something that most of us would never notice.

I'm sticking around and maybe I can learn something here.

I'm with your husband on this !! Knowing the circumstances in which this photo made its way to smalltown USA I think she may have been a victim of her environment. It's so tragic, but that part of the world is so prone to violence and to think LE in Iraq would investigate every instance would be impossible (heck, LE there has a hard time just keeping themselves alive!!!)

I'd love a PM too when someone has time. It's been so hectic the last few days I haven't had a chance to check in and would love to know what's happening with this young lady. I've thought about her often this week.

I think a lot of us are more confused than ever now! I just this minute got off the phone with the sheriff's secretary and the only information that she gave me was that the CASE IS CLOSED. So, does that mean we can talk about it now???

I don't know why she didn't tell me anything else. I actually told her what I knew (from my friendly WSers!) and she claimed to not even know that much!

She said that the girl was from out of the country (which we know), and that the photo fell from a man's truck out at Woody's gas station (which we also know). I asked her if the man had been identified, which I would assume or how else would she know it fell from a TRUCK? She said she did not know! Basically, I had many more details from this board then she did......maybe she just isn't telling all she knows.

I told her that my concern was that my elderly parents live nearby where the picture was found and I want to know the details for their safety. UGH!!! Maybe I will try to get the sheriff himself on the phone!

The last I heard she was.

Hiya, For me, it was the cleanliness, the neatness. I go to a pakistani lady in London when im at home and the results are always fantastic, plucking is just never that clean!

Would really appreciate if someone could pm me the information from LE - Is driving me nuts!!! Cheers!

Well, if the Sheriff says that the case is closed then I will post the email. Here's what I received.

Thanks for asking about the photo. The photo is a crime scene of a homicide victim that occurred in Irag, date unkown. A military man stationed in Irag who is from McClain County e-mailed it to his dad who then made a copy of it along with other different types of photo's from his son. If you have any further questions, please contact me. Thanks, Don

I know (appalling as it may be) that some people think of people of other races as a completely different species. Almost like you would take pictures of a 3 pt buck you shot, these guys think war-dead is "cool".

I wonder if he meant the case was closed as far as his jurisdiction. If something happened involving the military, the mps would investigate.

I sure hope they would. Because what was a U.S. soldier doing in the bedroom of / with a murdered Iraqi woman?

I don't see how they can close it even if the military took it over. Wouldn't it remain open here until the woman is properly identified and the perp is tried for the crime? I am not up on military and their laws etc., but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me and perhaps that is why.

I think we may be looking more into this solider having this photo then necessary....It could be a picture circulating; soliders could have been going through a bombed village and found her; we need to remember that death can/does run crazy in these middle eastern countries. I have posted several times my experience with viewing similar photos in the middle east....
The truth may be some solider thinks "death" is cool...kinda like Anita mentioned above. It's sick, twisted, disgusting, whatever you want to call it....but that is just how some people are.

He may not have been in the room with the murdered woman. One of the other posters has been to the Middle East (was it you czechmate7?..sorry I have a horrible memory) and they said that pictures like this are sold. I guess like you buy a postcard here. Then again, if he e-mailed and not snail mailed it then that would mean he either did take the picture with his camera (or someone else did) or he scanned a picture that was bought and sent it. It just all seems to strange and creepy if this guy is e-mailing pictures like this to his dad.
My only thought is maybe he sent it because he's sickened by some of the things he's seen and to help his dad better understand what he was going through he sent the picture (I'm stretching here aren't I?).

I believe, and I could be wrong, that if there are two possible jurisdictions, when one jurisdiction "claims" a case, the other jurisdiction closes it's investigation.

It's hard to let go, isn't it? But after thinking about it, I can come up with many reasons why the investigation is closed here. A couple of reasons: Why would it remain open here? No crime took place in USA. There isn't any jurisdiction for LE in Oklahoma, also, how could OSBI possibly solve an Iraqi on Iraqi crime? Or a military crime? It would just be an impossibility.

Also, we do not know that she is unidentified, in fact I'd bet that she was never unidentified, except to us! The fact that a military man took a photo---gotta wonder about the motivation to send it to his pop---leads me to believe that an ongoing investigation is taking place in Iraq. I don't know if it's being investigated by military forces or Iraqi police, but Iraq is where the investigation belongs. I hope she gets justice.

It probably won't help anything, but the bedspread she is on can be purchased from Wal-Mart. I know, because I stared at it almost a million times this last February when my wife and I were purchasing new bedding and trying to make our minds up...

We went with something else.

Really? Would you happen to have a link to it on-line somewhere?

I'm still not completely buying the story that this woman was in Iraq. I can't explain it. I just have a gut feeling this woman is really dead on American soil somewhere. I have no reasoning for this other than a feeling.

No, unfortunately not. I had already scoured both Wal-Mart's and Target's websites before I posted to see if I could find it again. The last time that I was shopping and noticed it again, I believe it was on clearance. That was about two months ago probably.

It's the same one though...I'm 100%.

The green area that you see right under her hand is the leaf of a plant. It's a jungle type themed comforter like others that have been popular over the last year, except this one has that really unmistakable tropical red color on it as well.

It caught my eye in the store...just like it caught my eye in the photo.

I dont understand what all the commotion about any of these photos are. First of all, the girl in the photo, as far as most of us are concerned, isnt Tara, in fact, the "staged" photo isnt Tara or Michael Henley. Tara was most likely murdered the same day she disappeared. And Michael Henely, probably died of exposure several days after disappearing.

Now, if we were to say the photos are Tara and Michael, then Tara's remains are up in those mountains somewhere, and they havent been found there, so I would tend to go with my theory...much ado about nothing

Mistagee, This is the old thread on what turned out to be a homicide scene involving the Iraqi girl in the pic. Another thread was started and some really good websleuthers had it pretty much all figured out by looking at the girls threaded eyebrows, her style of dress, etc.

This was one of the first threads that I followed on WS, it was very interesting. I found it after you guys figured it out but as I was reading before you figured it out, I wanted to post because I knew she was middle eastern. I'll try to summarize and hope I don't mess it up due to memory and being a long time ago. A pic was found laying outside a gas station in Oklahoma. Police were concerned for the woman and asked the public to help identify the woman or where the pic came from, no other facts were given. After first comparing the woman to Tara Calico and discussing that, posters began to realize that the woman was deceased, had been injured, and was most likely in another country. I'm not sure if I remember exactly, but I believe posters told each other the outcome in IM's for some reason. The pic was identified as a girl in Iraq who had been murdered, but I don't remember who came forward or claimed to have left the pic.

An American GI emailed it to his father with a series of other pictures-the GI's dad printed out this particular photo and dropped it at the gas station.

While I love the dialog it started here among strangers who were working so hard to figure it out, the idea that this woman became a "side show" and an object of curiosity probably for the second time is a little shocking...kind of an odd souvenir to send home to your father, isn't it?
