COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Police said a girl found slain at an apartment complex early Friday morning was a homicide victim.

Police were called to the 400 block of North Mapleton Street just after 3 a.m., where they found the girl, identified as Chelsea Porter, 14, had been fatally stabbed in an apartment.

Officials said they do not think the girl's killing was a random incident but they asked anyone with information to call Columbus police at 812-376-2600.

The girl did not live at the apartment. A family friend, who lived two doors away from the apartment, said Porter was staying with a family friend when she was killed.

Porter had been living in Alabama for the past year but had returned to Columbus for a family member's funeral.

Somebody stabbed a teenage girl to death at a home in Columbus and Friday the girl's neighbors said they're very concerned and hope police make an arrest soon.
Police say the young victim, 14-year-old Chelsea Porter, grew up Columbus but had been living out of state for the past year.

Investigators received a 911 call to come to the apartment just after 3:00 a.m. Once inside, police found the 14-year-old dead.
The coroner ruled the cause of death as a stabbing. The young victim, 14-year-old Chelsea Porter, suffered multiple stab wounds. She'd been spending the night with a family friend.
Police say the apartment did not appear broken into and they don t believe the teen's death was a random act of violence but still no suspects.

Where were the parents of the friend, where was the friend?

There was a 911 call that alerted police to the scene. They are not releasing that 911 call, however, say that the call did come from outside the apartment.

I wonder who called?

I wonder if the apartment owner's ex-husband mistook Chelsea (Chel-see, or Ches-lee?) for his ex-wife? :waitasec:

It does seem strange that she had been gone for a year and just returned for a relative's funeral and then she ends up murdered. If she let someone in it sounds like she knew them or maybe she just opened the door when they knocked and they pushed their way in. I wonder why she was there alone.
Seems like it would be had to mistake one person for another unless it was pitch dark in the apartment. Wonder if someone had it in for her before she moved and then they heard that she was in town and where she was staying?
How would they know that she would be alone though. I guess if she thought that the person was a friend that person could have called her and then gone over. Hope they catch whoever it is right away.

Okay so I have always hated living here. This state only cares about politics and nothing else. Me I am not a political person. Our Crime rate is the highest it has been and we are like 6 murders away from toppling last years rates. Now granted this crime isnt in my city, it is in my state and it is a horrible crime. But nothing is being reported of it. What is top news is A man was shot for breaking up a pit bull fight with another dog. No yes that is a bad story but in any other city wouldnt get first spot on news. Here it is top news because our mayor is hell bent on banning pit bulls. Sorry end rant

Now this is the only freakin new news I could find today.

Family members said Chelsea was staying with in the apartment building a family friend to help prepare for a birthday party when she was killed.
"They heard a commotion, went down and found her on the floor," said the girl's grandmother, Cecilia Means.

ETA good photo of her here... This is so sd she was 14 years old..

Indy Gal, yes it is a shame what happens in our state. The city you live in has so many things going for it that attract new business. Besides the Colts, Pacers, and Indy track, it would be great if the Governor would concentrate on being the toughest state on fighting crime. Extra taxes charged to support the sports venues could be better spent (JMHO). Columbus use to be known for being the home of some of the wealthiest people, now they are getting a different reputation. I put more blame on the Governor than the mayor of Indy, but I am not local to Indianapolis so could very well be wrong...

I heard on the first few minutes of our 11:00 news that an arrest has been made. I just checked the 6news website and nothing is up yet. Hopefully there will be a full story about the arrest by morning.
If I remember correctly they have been looking at this person since the beginning.
He is being held for felony murder and burglary, I think.
SHould have a link by morning.

found one at another stations website

:furious: So, she woke up and confronted him while he was robbing the place and he killed her, eh? :behindbar

Sad, if that is his page. It seems he has a child? Am I mistaken, or are the colors on that page Blood (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloods) gang colors? They wear the colors of blood, not just red, but also brown, orange and the like. (Pink for the girls.)

Taximom
07-02-2007, 11:42 AM
Wow, good catch with the gang colors. I wouldn't know if they are or not though.

Most of his pictures are of him and others high, drunk or both. (That's what the captions indicate anyway.) Did you see the one with the real little girls? :( :( Those always scare me because you wonder what else might be happening.

Where the heck are his parents?! I wonder why he's travelling between States? Indiana, Michigan....

I bet he and maybe some of his posse are responsible for many other crimes in those States.

I'm so sorry for Chelsea and her family.

*goes back to look over that slideshow again* What a willful waste of a life! I can't feel too sorry for him in a way, yet I can, sort of. He fell into that trap early enough he got firmly enmeshed and doesn't see any way out. Still, he chose the path of least resistance.

Just heard a clip on tonights 10:00 news that Twenty-year-old Demetrick Shepherd confessed.
ALso something about him comming into the apartment to look for keys to steal a car. Chelsea was sleeping on the couch and woke up and he went into the kitchen, got a knife, and stabbed her several times in the neck. Then he left and it seems he has stated that he came back to the apartment and she was still alive, barely I guess, and then he left again.
I will post a link as soon as they update their website.
