The northwest Houston (Spring, Tx) boy who was brutally beaten and left for dead by two other teens in what many felt was a racially motivated attack leaped to death from a cruise ship. Here's the story so far:

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4936066.html

He had already undergone 30 surgeries and two trials. This is such a tragic ending.

Oh that is sooo sad. What a heavy load for such a young man :( Very tragic ending.

My heart breaks for this boy. He survived a brutal physical attack, but perhaps what he went through combined with the surgeries and two trials was just too much for him. This is beyond sad to me.

I will never forget what he went through. I'm so sorry he killed himself. It must have been difficult dealing with all he had on his plate. :(

RIP, David.

This is so sad. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

The family is being very tightlipped right now. He was definitely into a partying lifestyle as a younger teen, so it's hard to tell if he just continued that and was inebriated or otherwise impaired, or if he was depressed and purposefully (even if impaired at the time) meant to kill himself.

I was so amazed he managed to survive that brutal attack. I am just so sad about the ending to this story.

This poor teen had suffered enough. I prayed he would heal and live a normal life. No one knows what he was going through.
May God bless his soul.

The Houston Chronicle story mentioned that he had refused psychiatric care
after the attack. I feel certain that was a terrible mistake for him.

I agree, and that is another tragedy. I do not know if there are laws concerning this or not, but the two slimes that beat him, left him for dead, and caused that boy to need 30 surgeries should be held and charged as accomplices in his death.

I couldn't help but think the same thing. He may have physically recovered, but this also damaged him in so many other ways.

I am just sick that young people are so cruel to each other.

I remember when so many , including many here, were praying for this poor kid to survive. It almost didn't seem possible that he could.

Now this.

It's just so sad.

Me too, Taximom. I recall hearing a recent report on the news(sorry, I cannot recall where), that people(kids!) are becoming more violent at a younger age. I think this is true, and I think we need to take a hard look at it, determine the cause(s) and change it. This poor boy's senseless attack and resulting suicide hurts deeply.

I think they received life or close to life sentences for the original assault.

I agree. He really needed therapy to get through this.

OMG.

I have followed this from when the news of the attack first broke. I am just sickened by this. Literally nauseated. That poor, poor boy. If he did jump on purpose, in a way, those bastards that did that to him, murdered him. JMHO.

:(

There is a lengthy thread in the Crimes forum. The info about his death is updated there too.

Perhaps the Mods can combine the two threads.

Well, here's hoping that these two thugs are sodomized by a thousand demons with fiery stallagtites for all eternity before being handed over to Satan!

What a real shame.

Prayers for this young man and his family. I cannot imagine having to live with the memories of that day and always wondering (knowing) if people were whispering and pointing behind your back. The attack he survived was so horrific.

I hope he finally has peace.

The original attack made me SICK  when I heard about it. IMO, The two attackers killed him the day they did this - it just took him 2 years to die. I am sure living with a colostomy and heaven knows what else at his young age was a living hell - especially since it was not due to an illness, but because of pure hate from two burgeoning sociopaths. They ruined his life in the most sensitive and personal ways at an age when he barely knew what he had lost. Evidently that realization came a little later. Without counseling - for both him and his family, the poor young man was almost certainly doomed from the day he was released from the hospital. I know his family loved him, but sadly, there isn't enough love on earth to make him whole again without some professional support.

The ONLY solace I can gain by his death is that now, he is whole and perfect and filled with divine love for eternity. Fly HIGH now!

I hope he haunts the two criminals who did this every day of their sorry lives. I do not wish for THEM to be victimized (that does no good and lowering myself the their level isn't "justice") but I do hope that they live in constant fear of the same treatment they gave him and that they see that boy's face in their dreams at night and hear his cries in their heads all day every day. I am personally not sure that young men who could perpetrate this horror on someone else and then not call for help and leave him to die, can EVER be rehabilitated. It's like they compounded the worst, most dysfunctional, cruel, nasty traits in each other - they were more than the sum of 2 when they were together , they were EVIL. :furious:

And I want to say WHERE WERE THEIR PARENTS???? Just as guilty, IMO. :banghead:

My Opinion, Really

I am SO sad to hear this. Those guys didn't physically murder him, but they might as well have.

I remember reading a thread about his attack here when it happened but could not find it....

HOUSTON (AP) As horrific and painful as the past year had been for David Ritcheson, his future seemed brighter -- a chance to attend college for free, to devote his life to public service and to leave behind a troubled past.
The past 15 months of Ritcheson's life were focused on recovering physically and emotionally from a brutal attack in which he was beaten unconscious and sodomized with a plastic pole by a man shouting "White Power!"
He leaped to his death in the Gulf of Mexico from an upper deck of a Carnival Cruise ship on Sunday morning, according to several witnesses. Although his family has declined to speak publicly about the death, the family's attorney scheduled a news conference for Tuesday.
Ritcheson had endured more than two dozen painful surgeries and relied on a colostomy bag. Perhaps worse, virtually everyone he met knew who he was and what had happened to him that terrifying night in April 2006.
But many who knew him say he appeared to have emerged from that time with a newfound clarity. Thanks to the Anti-Defamation League, he had a full scholarship to the college of his choice. Like many 18-year-olds, he hadn't yet decided on a career path, but thought he wanted to help prevent attacks like the one he had endured.
Story continues (http://www.courttv.com/news/2007/0703/suicide_ap.html#storycont)

I just saw this on fox news. Unbelievable. I remember clearly the attack this boy survived. How horrible that he felt he had no other choice to end his pain. Friggin losers need to die in jail.

I can't get this young man out of my head. I haven't been inside a church in over 25 years. Today I went to St. Josephs, to light candles for him and SeahorseLadyDi's son. Both losses touched me deeply. I just didn't know what else to do. :(

He was with the family of friends, he was 18, he was not CHILD - legally an adult - just graduated from HS. His family could not be everywhere with him forever. He had repeatedly refused counseling and had undergone his like 47th surgery 3 mos ago. He covered up and hid his pain, pretended nothing was wrong. Obviously, there was a lot wrong. So sad.....

"Ritcheson had paid for the cruise trip himself, joining two friends and one of the young men's parents on the vessel."

I know. But he was 18, not 28. He had been through so much the past two years--30 surgeries to date. He didn't have any psychiatric care after such a horrific experience (think of the self-blame that any rape victim goes through, the anger, and for him, the permanent physical issues) and he was so much more fragile emotionally than he let on to anyone else, obviously.

I'm sure his family thought it would be a fun experience for him.

I just wish we could re-write the ending of this story for him. He deserved more than this.

Apparently he was talking about it the day before with his companions and a ten year old girl overheard them. She told her mother who thought the boys were just kidding around.
