Orlando police searching for missing 11-year-oldApril Hunt | Sentinel Staff Writer 6:36 PM EDT, August 12, 2007 Orlando police are looking for an 11-year-old girl who took out the family trash this morning in the Richmond Heights/Carver Shores area.

Gizette St. Charles was last seen when she went outside at about 11:30 a.m. to put the garbage out at her house at 4200 Nimons Street. Her family waited a few hours, trying to find her themselves, before notifying police.

"They say she has never run away before, and there was no fight or anything that would precipitate a problem," said Orlando Police Sgt. Barbara Jones.

Detectives set up a command center in the neighborhood and began posting fliers of Gizette. They also used a bloodhound to attempt to track the girl but had not found her as of 6:30 p.m.

Gizette was last seen wearing a gray tank-top nightgown with a pink bra and white bedroom slippers.

Anyone with information about her is asked to call Orlando Police or Crimeline at 1-800-423-8477.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Police in Orlando are searching for an 11-year-old who vanished while she was taking out the trash Sunday.
Detectives said Gizette St. Charles was last seen early Sunday outside of her home located on Nimons Street in Washington Shores.
Officers with a scent-tracking bloodhound used a toy Gizette played with and a piece of her clothing and walked the streets of the neighborhood after she was reported missing. Officers were seen knocking on doors and questioning neighbors.
Friends and family members have also posted photos of Gizette around the area in hopes of generating leads in the case.
Orlando police were treating the girl's disappearance as a possible runaway case earlier in the day, the WKMG-TV report said.
Officers said they will search the area of her disappearance late Sunday and early Monday. If there is still no sign of Gizette, they will set up a command post and consider launching an Amber Alert.
The girl's family said she was last seen wearing a gray tank-top style nightgown and white slippers.
Anyone with information concerning the whereabouts of the girl is urged to call Orlando police.

An all-out search is on for a missing 11-year-old girl in Orlando.

Investigators said Sunday morning, Ginette St. Charles went to take out the trash at her home on the 4200 block of Nimons Street, but then never came back inside.
Orlando Police later set up a command center.
Officers also handed out flyers and used bloodhounds to try and find the girl's scent, but so far have come up empty handed.

Her family waited a few hours, trying to find the girl themselves before calling police. Family members said, at first, they thought St. Charles was just hiding.
"She figured she thought maybe she's hiding, because sometimes when they're doing chores, she don't want to do chores, so she hides,” Clonise St. Charles said through translation. “So she didn't believe she was really missing."
St. Charles is 4-foot-10-inches tall and weighs 110 pounds.
She was last seen wearing a tank top-style nightgown and white bedroom slippers.

If you have seen her, call Orlando Police.

"waited a few hours" WTH??!! I hope she's found alive and well soon. :(

I think it's weird that she was still in her nightgown etc. Who runs away in their nightgown? Granted, she may have been sleeping in since it's summertime...but still. This one sounds odd to me.

This certainly doesn't sound like a runaway, especially since she didn't change clothes.

I hope this isn't one of those "parents did it" reports of a missing child.

Yay- the one thing that got me was the local 6 article that stated "Officers said they will search the area of her disappearance late Sunday and early Monday. If there is still no sign of Gizette, they will set up a command post and consider launching an Amber Alert. "..... aren't the first 48 hours crucial?

I'm glad this turned out the way it did. They better lay down the law or something before this becomes routine!

:woohoo:

"hen police found her, however, with an acquaintance, the girl said she was afraid to go home because of what would happen to her, said Orlando Police Lt. Isiah White."

LOL, she SHOULD be afraid. My mother would have killed me.

". . . Family members said the girl - who was wearing a nightgown and slippers when she disappeared, had never run away before. They also told police that there had been no fight or problem before she disappeared.

When police found her, however, with an acquaintance, the girl said she was afraid to go home because of what would happen to her, . . ."

This is another example of why I am so hesitant to assume foul play in these cases. This person was not dressed for running away and yet managed to do so even at the young age of 11 so I can see older people being able to do it more easily. This person had no history of running away until she suddenly did (although her prior times of "hiding" to avoid chores should have been a red flag indicating possible runaway in this case.) There was no fight to give a warning that she might want to run away. And after running away she stayed gone instead of just returning.

These are all the sorts of things that makes people think foul play when a case comes up and sometimes people get adamant about it, refusing to look at any other possibility with an open mind. In the case of an 11 year old I agree that one must err on the side of caution and make sure the case is vigorously pursued but when L.E. repeatedly see such cases I can well understand why and how they can easily fall into assuming a case is only another runaway.

I'm glad she's home safely, but I agree- my parents would've killed me if I did something like that.

Oh, yeah, she should be VERY afraid. What she did takes dodging out on chores to a whole new level......
