Search Continues For Missing Hancock County Woman

Brandi Laurent is a 1996 graduate of Hancock High, described as intelligent and compassionate. Friends may not know about her recent problems with drugs.
"She was determined to go out that night. And she had already been up for four days straight. She had gotten mixed in with some meth," said Brandi's husband, Leo Laurent.
He says the 29-year-old got caught up in drugs much deeper than she realized. She had left for short periods before, but always called to check on the children.
"This is not the woman I married. This is not the woman that her family knows. This is not the woman that I know," said her husband of nearly ten years.

"Brandi Laurent, age 29, was last seen on Friday, August 3, 2007 around midnight walking on Fenton-Dedeaux Road in Kiln, Mississippi and has not been seen or heard from since. Brandi was last seen wearing a green tank top with khaki shorts and black flip flops. Brandi has tattoos on both calves, fairy on lower back, and BAILEE below her neck with Oriental writing underneath."

The road she dissappeard from is(if i remember right) very dark at night, leading to a main road that is alos very dary and curvy. Why was she even walking, where was she walking to? It is a long walk to anything from that area. I wonder if someone hit her with a car and hid her body.

From what I have read-it seems she left with no clothes, money, cell phone, identification, or car. I read that at the court tv foums. Seems her sisters friend is posting there for family. Apparently this is out of character for her. She has left in the past, but ALWAYS called to check on her kids.

I don't like the circumstances of this. Leaving the middle of nowhere on foot at midnight. Anything could have happened, a looney driving along, she could have been hit by a car. She was a few miles from anywhere but also not too far from the interstate.

According to a blog that she left on her own myspace page on August 5th, she was tired of being a mother and wanted to do something for herself. She met a man and went to be with him... ( I found her myspace page off of her husband Leo's page )

People who are addicted to Meth and have been up for 4 days are already in a bad way so she may have been paranoid and delusional which could explain her leaving in the middle of the night. She could have literally gone into "hiding" and had an accident or ran into trouble out in the open somewhere.

Has the family considered calling in EquuSearch? This would be one of the first things I would do.

MissieMt

It is tragic. I'm so torn about it-considering they had marital problems. If she were leaving to go get more drugs why wouldn't she take the car, or her cell phone, or a wallet/purse? I find it hard to believe she would still just be out doing drugs and not have contactedd her family by now. Mississippi doesn't normally give much attention to missing adults and I think all of the publicity and the vigil would have brought her out of hiding by now.

Hope4Lost
09-18-2007, 02:11 AM
Could it be that a friend was picking her up? Of course, the husband could be involved, but one scenario is just as likely as the other with her drug use. I'm from MS too and people involved in the meth trade in these parts had just as soon shoot you as look at you.

I agree that not a lot of attention is given to missing adults (or children for that matter) in Mississippi. At most, you see a blurb in the paper or on the news one time and that's it. Murders most likely committed by spouses often go cold too, at least the ones that I have known about.

MissieMt
09-18-2007, 03:38 PM
It is possible that she was picked up, but when? I think if she had called someone for a ride before she left the house her husband would have mentioned it. From what I've heard-the road she would have traveled to get anywhere from her house isn't lit and is very rural.
Hope4lost-about where are you in MS, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm wondering if that note on her MySpace isn't just a bit convient. According to the people who knew her best she loved her children and wouldn't have just gone off with someone much less say that she was tired of being a mother. I could see someone writing "I'm tired of being a wife" but this gal is known to love her kids and not have that attitude.

With meth it really is hard to tell but I wouldn't cross the husband off of the suspect list. Maybe he got tired of being a husband to a meth user.

MissieMt

I agree Bobbisangel, in fact if it weren't for that blog I probably wouldn't think twice about assuming her disappearance is due to drugs and nothing more.

i'm not completely sure she was on drugs. for one the last post that she made on her myspace, that people who know her recognise as hers... wasn't ramblings of someone who had been up for days. also the only one that has really said she was on drugs and had been up for days was her hubby. she also was at work the day she disappeared and came home from work sick. from what i've read her friend called her and she was in bed sick. if she had been up for days and was still "up" she wouldn't have been in bed. another story her hubby said they were in bed when she decided she wanted to go out. again, if she was high on the type of drugs he was talking about.....she wouldn't have been in bed. she would have been up and about.

personally i believe he's the one claiming she was on drugs to make them think she left on her own.

From an unofficial source:

""November 10 12:15 P.M.
The body of Brandi Laurent has been found less than a mile from her home. According to Cindy Wisdom, the TES coordinator, she was found in 6-8 foot tall grass about 100 yards from the road and not buried. She was found by a horse mounted search team. The police have secured the area. DNA testing and dental checks will be done but police are 90% sure this is Brandi. She was found 45 minutes into the search. A very sad ending and my thoughts and prayers are with Brandi's family. Her husband Leo was notified by TES. He was at a soccer tournament."

Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandi's family.

Something fishy is going on here. if she had been dead since that night and it has been warm here, how did were they able to see her tatoos to ID her? I mean, Aug 3 to the end of Sept were ungodly hot. I wonder if she were alive until recently.

The why are they only now looking there? it seems odd that for 3 months she has been gone and the whole time she was one mile away. If hancock county LE thought she was there then why didn't they look sooner? Or did they and she was not there?

This bothers me greatly. The LE there say her disappearance was suspicious from the beginning, but yet, to my knowledge, there was no search.

Most LE is not trained on available tools and resources, such as using SAR. If the SAR is qualified and free, as many are, why not use them?

Now this family suffered the agony of not knowing for months, when they could have had an answer much sooner.

Not only that, but with time and a decomposing body, key evidence may have been lost.

It's just plain senseless.

I don't know enough about the rate of decomposition to say, but it would make sense that if they could still identify her tattoos, then not all is gone.

Good Morning guys. I'm one county away from all of this so I'm going to give my personal opinion about LE and missing person's. But first I want to say that them finding her was VERY bittersweet for me. When I heard there was a woman missing from our area and I looked into it and started posting threads everyone got caught up in the fact that she had used Meth and seemed to ignore the fact that she was in a troubled marriage. I immediately got the feeling that she had met an untimely demise due to him and not drugs, but I tried to keep it neutral. I know not every troubled marriage leads to murder, but not every Meth user is murdered either. So, I'm happy she was found to give the family peace-and to prove FINALLY that she wasn't just another Meth head who ran off (not that I condone Meth users, I just didn't get that impression from what her family was saying). But I'm also very sad for her children and all the people who loved and missed her. I really wish she were able to see how many people truly cared about her.
Now-LE and Missing Person cases...I have lived here for over 4 years, and all though plenty of people have gone missing you don't really hear about it around here. Look on the NCMEC, there are only 10 missing children in the whole state of Mississippi, one UID (sweet Delta Dawn)-and you can pretty much forget about finding info on missing adults anywhere. Brandi is the first missing person I have seen that had any real media coverage around here and that was due to her family's dogged determination. I'm not sure what the problem is, but I think it is an issue in every local organization that would be dealing with missing persons (LE, media, etc.). Someday I hope to work to try to change this, but right now I am concentrating on finding my sister-and I have no clue as to where to begin in changing all of it.

BAY ST. LOUIS --

The husband of a Kiln woman found Saturday during a volunteer search in Hancock County told the Sun Herald he is innocent of wrongdoing in the death of his wife, Brandi Hawkins Laurent.

Laurent, a mother of two, was reported missing Aug. 3 from their home off Road 528 near Kiln by her husband, Leo Laurent. He told deputies she had been using drugs for several days and left their FEMA trailer on foot at midnight after the couple had argued.

Authorities have considered Leo Laurent a person of interest in the case for weeks. He has been questioned on a number of occasions by Sheriff's Investigator Rita Blaize-Watson and others, and has taken at least two polygraph exams.

Leo Laurent has posted on Internet sites that he passed both tests, which normally are not admissible as court evidence, "100 percent."

Off the record, Sheriff's Department sources have said he failed both tests.

Anyone from that area would not take off on foot in the middle of the night. mIddle of nowhere pitch black and miles from a gas station or anything. The roads are busy and hard tosee at night so i just don't see anyone being crazy enough to walk those roads at night.

I just spoke to Ms. Anita and all things being said about Leo need stop immediately, per the police. Some things can interfere with an investigation in court. This is not something we thought up ourselves, but something that is required in a case that turns to a murder. We do not want to hinder the case for Brandi. Leo is nonexistant at this time and may Brandi forever live on our memory. I will be able to discuss more in the next few hours.

Brandi Hawkins Laurent, found murdered in a rural field last week, had lived through years of domestic turbulence with her husband, whose history includes arrests for domestic violence and embezzlement.

Leo Lucas Laurent, 30, of Hancock County, has been arrested but never convicted on at least three occasions, public records show. His latest arrest, for embezzlement, was on Aug. 6, two days after he reported his wife missing from their home near Kiln.

HANCOCK COUNTY --

Leo Laurent said the Hancock County Sheriff's Department's lackluster investigation could let his wife's killer off the hook.

The body of his 29-year-old wife, Brandi, was found buried last week in a shallow grave about a mile from their home.

"I'm hoping these forensics and things come back and not too much time has passed and they can bring out some evidence to start getting some leads and maybe get on a case they should have been on months ago," Laurent said.

Investigators have listed Laurent as a "person of interest" in the case, but he insists he's not a suspect.

"See, because they keep putting 'person of interest' by my name, people are taking that as I'm a suspect. I'm not a suspect," he said.

I wish everyone would leave this alone and let the authorities handle it. If he did it, then his day will come. Until then, he is innocent until proven guilty.

I've been given the impression that he does still have custody of the younger daughter-but I may be wrong.

Yesterday I heard he was still in Pearl River County jail for embezzelment but I guess that was wrong. info.http://zerogossip.com/2008/01/11/booked-for-murdersea-coast-echo.aspx

After looking more it seems since Katrina Hancock and PRC share the PRC jail so that's why he is still up here, this article tells a little about the embezzlement charge for anyone who is curious. http://www.picayuneitem.com/local/local_story_010145044.html

Thank you guys for keeping this up. I wanted to post the new info so badly, I was SOOO excited when he was finally arrested! But I lost my password and it took a while to get it reset. I'm so happy that Brandi will finally be able to have peace-and her family-well, I can only imagine how bittersweet this must be for them.

oh lord have mercy, so he is saying her nose started bleeding..then she just fell on the floor and died? oh and they had just had an argument and for added shock she was using drugs....then why the need to stuff her in a trashcan and hide the body??? This guy is something else entirely! And did you read the other story about him being shot at from a passing car 60 feet away??? If not..here it is..

MsPooh:

Leo went to court on the 'being shot from a passing car' case and admitted to lying. He was fined and has to pay $5000 restitution to the county in which he made up that story.

He's offered up 7 different stories about what happened to Brandi on the night she died. Obviously, he's still trying to downplay his own actions i.e. she just fell on the floor and died or she came at him with a gun and it 'accidently went off'. Strange thing that although there was evidence to support a gunshot to the chest, the actual cause of death was strangulation. What did he do - strangle her after she was shot? Doesn't make a lot of sense if the whole incident was accidental.

During the investigation, Leo corresponded with a blogger named Holliston at zerogossip.com, lying and protecting himself all the way. Holliston is currently writing his take on his discussions with Leo and is expected to publish it on Monday (for those that are interested).

ETA: Holliston has the first part already up: http://zerogossip.com/2008/02/08/brandi-laurent-through-a-bloggers-eye.aspx

There's a lot of information at this link:

http://www.sunherald.com/278/story/358707-p2.html

I like what his lawyer says:
After Friday's hearing, a reporter asked Alexander how he plans to defend a murder suspect who has given seven different versions of events to the police.

"I don't know," he said. "It's going to be interesting. That's my answer."

and here's another version he has told:

Fizer said Laurent had also given another statement in which he said his wife had produced a pistol that night and she was shot as the two tussled over the gun. The investigator said the autopsy did reveal damage to her rib cage that could have come from a gunshot.
