Mother Charged After Amber Alert
Alleged Stolen Baby Found Safe

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Deputies in North Carolina spent the night looking for a kidnapped child, but now that child's mother is facing charges.

Investigators said Jeanette Michelle Goforth told Cleveland County deputies that a man stole her car at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday with her 5-month-old baby in the back seat.

An Amber Alert was issued for the child at about 2:45 a.m. Sunday, but it was canceled just before 5:30 a.m.

Investigators said the child was safe and was not in the car when it was reported stolen.

Deputies then charged Goforth with filing a false police report.

Investigators said they are still looking for the stolen vehicle.

Why would a person report her child kidnapped if she wasn't? Was she planning ahead to do something to the child?

Is this another case where the mom just wanted her car found so she lied about a baby being inside?

God bless LE for all the crap they have to put up with.

Who dropped the baby off then? And where was the baby before it was dropped off/after the mom reported the incident?

I think that probably is the case...that the mother thought her car would be found faster if she said the baby was in the car.

I can't find anything about who brought the baby to the police. We need more information. Maybe there will be more in subsequent articles.

I'm glad the mother is facing the music. She should never have lied.

There was a case similar to this here last year, a woman went into a convienience store and left her baby in the car while it was running and someone took off with the car with the baby inside according to Mom. While it was all over the news that night her husband called LE and said he had the baby at home with him that she had went out alone. Turns out she was diabetic, her blood sugar was extremely low..she had went into the store for a coke and became very confused in a very short period of time, although someone had in fact stolen the car thank god her child wasn't in there. They tried to charge her for filing a false police report but after the medical findings, they dropped it.

KINGS MOUTAIN, N.C. -- At one point Sunday morning a Kings Mountain convenience store’s parking lot was full of police cars and crews frantically sending out an Amber Alert for a 5-month-old boy.

His mother, Jeanette Michelle Goforth, claimed he was inside her car when it was stolen from the store while she went inside late Saturday night. But now police say that story was made up.

Within hours after Goforth issued an emotional plea for the return of her baby, the child’s father had brought the him to the Kings Mountain Police Department. He told them the baby was never missing and was never inside the stolen car.

On Monday afternoon Goforth turned herself into police and was charged with making a false report to police. While she wouldn’t comment on the situation, others in Cleveland County have plenty to say. They’re angry that police had to waste their time.

“They could have been out solving a crime or stopping somebody from getting raped or murdered or anything. But instead they was out looking for a bogus call,” said Scott Rayfield, a Kings Mountain resident.
