A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Gary Miller, R-Brea, said Tuesday the congressman and his wife are concerned about their missing grandchildren.

"This is a very private matter," said the spokesman Kevin McKee. "An investigation is underway and they are very concerned about what's happening to their grandkids. They are not going to get in the middle of this while their grandkids are unaccounted."

Meanwhile, the father of a woman suspected of abducting the the three children said Tuesday he has not spoken to his daughter for two days.

Jude Lopez, of Diamond Bar, said his daughter, Jennifer DeJongh, 30, is embroiled in a custody dispute with the congressman's son, Brian, and the congressman.

Three grandchildren of Southern California Rep. Gary Miller who were reported missing are with their mother, possibly in Nevada, and are believed to be safe, authorities said Tuesday.

Jennifer Dejongh was supposed to drop her three sons off at Miller's house Sunday for an "extended visit," according to court papers. Dejongh's father, Jude Lopez, said his daughter is in a custody dispute with the children's father, the congressman's son Brian Miller. The two were never married, he said.

Investigators were called because Dejongh "was supposed to show up with the kids at an agreed-upon location and she did not," said Steve Whitmore, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"This is known as a child abduction. They're with their mother," said Whitmore. The children were not believed to be in immediate danger. No Amber Alert was issued, he said.

Sheriff's Deputy Bill Brauberger said the children may have been taken to Las Vegas or elsewhere in Nevada.
Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Tony Moore said he did not know if a warrant had been issued for Dejongh's arrest. Even if one hasn't, she is still subject to arrest by any law enforcement officer, Moore said, because she is in violation of a court order.

Lopez said his daughter told him Sunday she would not be bringing the children to the congressman. He said his daughter had friends in Nevada, but he did not know where she was.

Dejongh, who was recently married and also goes by her maiden name, Jennifer Lopez, was apparently upset by a court notice she received Saturday that said the congressman was seeking increased custodial rights, her father said.

(I'd love to know why a congressman is trying to gain more custody of his grandchildren. Hoppy)

According to news reports on the radio, and to the best of my recollection, mom accused dad of horrible sexual abuse of the children, among other things. This was part of protracted custody litigation between the parents and led to apparently three different court appointed psychological custody evaluations. These children were at some point even hospitalized for mental issues. Mom said it was due to the abuse. However, the court determined as a result of the evaluations and as a result of minor's counsel's recommendations that the abuse allegations were false and that instead, the children had been severly brainwashed and completely alienated from their father, by their mother. Due to this, minor's counsel recommended, as did at least one of the experts, that the children be immediately removed from their mother's custody and given to thier father. But, since the children had been so alienated, the kids would be placed in their grandfather (the congressman)'s custody for 90 days as a transition. Mother and her family claim there was undue influence on the judges by the congressman. Both of the children's grandfathers were on the radio stating the family's different sides. As a family law attorney here in Calif., I know the courts are not always fair but the custody evaluators are usually from a panel of independent, impartial evaluators. I have never known of one to be in the pocket of the judges. They can make mistakes but are usually thinking only of the children's best interests. Mom ran because she did not want to relinquish the children. KFI AM 640 may have more info on this case on thier website. Strange case but not unheard of.

....claim there was undue influence on the judges by the congressman....

That's what I was wondering about, but I trust what you're saying in your post about the independent recommendations. Thanks!

A sheriff's official said there was no update on the whereabouts of a Diamond Bar woman and her husband who fled with the woman's three sons instead of giving them to their grandfather, Rep. Gary Miller, who has custody of them.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Bob Skudlarski said Tuesday there was no new information about the case.

In a letter postmarked from New Hampshire, the mother of three missing grandsons of a local congressman says the boys are safe and justifies her actions as necessary to save the boys from an abusive father.

"I am a mother trying to protect her children," Jennifer Lopez Dejongh wrote toward the end of the 16-page letter, written in long hand and postmarked Feb. 2 in Manchester, N.H., without a return address. "If you speak to my father, tell him we're safe and happy."

Dejongh, 30, and her children, Brian, 8, and twins Christian and Evan, 6, disappeared Nov. 19 in defiance of a court order to turn over the children to Rep. Gary Miller, R-Diamond Bar, and his wife Cathy. Her husband George Dejongh is also missing. The couple wed in July.

On Friday, Jude Lopez, Jennifer's father, reviewed the letter and confirmed the writing as that of his daughter. Lopez said he has had no contact with her since the disappearance.
