Laurean possibly flees to Mexico
http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/885726.html

Laurean likely sacrificed any citizenship rights he maintained in Mexico when he joined the Marine Corps, but that's an untested question in Mexico, Ornelas said.

The FBI is feeding investigators in Mexico tips about Laurean's possible whereabouts and asking them to check on the FBI's behalf, said Newsom Summerlin, FBI special agent in Charlotte.

Laurean also faces a federal flight charge, according to FBI officials.

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (AP) -- Authorities investigating the death of a 20-year-old pregnant Marine said Thursday they may have recovered the weapon used to kill her.

A witness gave investigators an item that could have been used to kill Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, said Onslow County sheriff's Captain Rick Sutherland. He declined to say who gave police the item last weekend and what it was.

Marines Wife Waited to Report Death

The wife of the key suspect in the slaying of a 20-year-old pregnant Marine waited almost 24 hours after learning of the woman's death to go to authorities, according to court documents released Thursday.

The sheriff's affidavit, which details the account Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean's wife gave to detectives, does not provide an explanation for why she waited. Police have consistently described her as a cooperating witness, and she does not face charges.
Laurean told his wife, Christina, while driving to their attorney's office last Thursday that Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach visited the couple's home on Dec. 15, demanded money and told him she planned to leave the area, according the affidavit.

Lauterbach had accused Laurean of rape in May, a charged he denied to military investigators.

Laurean asked his wife whether she was "with him on this" as they headed to the attorney's office, according to the affidavit. She responded: "I do not know. Is there anything you have not told me?" That's when Laurean told her what had happened, the affidavit states.

He told his wife that he and Lauterbach purchased a bus ticket for her to El Paso, Texas, but that she later returned to their home and they began to argue. He claimed Lauterbach produced a knife and slit her own throat. Laurean also told his wife he then buried Lauterbach in the woods near their home, the documents state.

Jacksonville — Onslow County authorities said Friday they do not believe Christina Laurean was at her house when a pregnant Marine was killed. They believe she was at a Christmas party during that time.

Laurean’s husband, Camp Lejeune Marine Cpl. Cesar Laurean, is wanted in the death of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach.

Sheriff's officials said Thursday that investigators believe Cesar Laurean killed Lauterbach, 20, on Dec. 14. Authorities described Christina Laurean as a cooperating witness and said they have no plans to charge her.

Greta's interview w/Special Agent Kolko - 01/17/08

"KOLKO: Well, a couple things happened. As soon as we thought he was gone, the FBI got the warrant. And what we do is we notify as many of the police as we can through our notification systems. And at the same time, we start notifying the public, OK, via the posters, some press releases, 1-800-CALL-FBI line, and then we started to get some tips, which helped us track him.

Some information, intelligence, led us to believe that he may have worked his way to Texas and possibly gone into Mexico. But one of the issues there is he's already proven to us that he wants to be a fugitive. So even though we think he might have gone into Mexico, that doesn't he's staying there. So it's still critical that people in the States are on the lookout for him."

The surveillance video from December 16 shows Cpl. Laurean shopping at a Lowe's home improvement store two days after Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach is believed to have been killed, said Onslow County Sheriff's spokesman Rick Sutherland.

CNN obtained the video from the television program "America's Most Wanted" and broadcast it during Friday night's "Anderson Cooper 360."

In the video, Laurean is seen with another person described by "America's Most Wanted" as "a friend." Sutherland said that investigators believe Laurean was with someone at the store, but had no other comment.

The video shows Laurean purchasing supplies, paint, concrete blocks and a wheelbarrow.

http://www.daytondailynews.com/n/content/oh/story/news/local/2008/01/20/ddn012008maria.html

On Christmas Eve, the Laureans lit a bonfire in their backyard. The next day, the cars lined up on the street as they entertained friends and fellow Marines. They welcomed friends to their home again on New Year's Day.
Life on Meadow Trail continued to appear normal right up until the morning of Jan. 11, when police crews descended on the house just before the world learned that a pregnant Maria Lauterbach was killed and buried in Laurean's backyard fire pit, and that he was gone.
The night before, the Alanders saw their next-door neighbors sitting on their front porch. She didn't think much of it at the time, but Wanda said she noticed Cesar kept walking into the backyard.

Mother says slain lance corporal wanted to be sent to Iraq rather than be around alleged attacker

Mary Lauterbach was strolling out of Wal-Mart on May 10 when her cell phone rang. Maria again. Her oldest daughter, "strong as a bobcat," had seemed lonely and vulnerable since being stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. It was, after all, the first time away from home for the 20-year-old Marine lance corporal from Vandalia. She called three or four times a day — so often that Mary found herself guiltily screening her calls.
Maria gasped out the words between sobs: "Mom, I was attacked."

Jacksonville, N.C. — The Federal Bureau of Investigation on Friday released an altered photograph of a Camp Lejeune Marine wanted for the slaying of a pregnant comrade who had accused him of rape.

Investigators believe that Laurean has fled to Mexico. He was born in Guadalajara before moving to the U.S. and becoming an American citizen.

A Marine charged with killing a pregnant colleague who had accused him of rape was active online for months as a fugitive, according to court documents released Wednesday.
The documents offer a comprehensive look at the monthslong search for Cpl. Cesar Laurean, who is charged in the death of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, 20, of Vandalia, Ohio.
Though he fled to Mexico in January, Laurean's constant contact with his wife and family eventually led to his arrest in April.
According to motions filed by prosecutors, he frequently logged into an e-mail account belonging to his wife, Christina, and left her messages. A person using a computer in Mexico City also accessed the couple's joint bank account.

DAYTON, Ohio -- After the death of her daughter, Mary Lauterbach launched a battle to improve the security of women in the military.
She faulted the Marines for not doing enough to protect her daughter, Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, when Maria reported that she had been raped by another Marine.

In an interview with WHIOTV.COM, her mother said she convinced Maria to report the attack.

“I was the one who said you have to report that. You owe it to all of your sister Marines to do that, so you have no choice. I was the one who pushed her to report it, not knowing what I was asking her to do. I feel that I owe it now to make it safe for other women to report their attacks,” Lauterbach said.

The mother of slain pregnant Marine Maria Lauterbach said she finds it shocking that the murder suspect's fight against extradition from Mexico could delay or possibly jeopardize the North Carolina court system's ability to try him.

"It's a tragedy after all the investment in this because a lot of people worked very hard to get to that point," said Mary Lauterbach, of Vandalia, on Tuesday, Oct. 14.

The wife of Corporal Cesar Laurean has returned from Mexico after visiting her husband.
The Onslow County District Attorney's Office says Christina Laurean, herself a Camp Lejeune Marine, was back on base Tuesday morning.
Two weeks ago prosecutors were concerned after the Marine Corps gave Laurean's wife leave to visit her husband in a Mexican prison,
Cesar Laurean is being held in prison, fighting extradition back to North Carolina on charges he killed fellow Marine Maria Lauterbach.

Authorities have said Christina Laurean cooperated with investigators, but Hudson says he's not sure how this visit will impact her willingness to testify against her husband.
